We are looking into making a turbo kit for the Mazda5. We have had our kits for the MZ3, MZ6 and now want to expand the line into the MZ5. We already looked at the car, which by the way I like very much and now know that the Mazda 3 turbo kit will be very simple to retrofit into this car. I am trying to look for interest in the turbo kit and we can garantee 220 whp out of this engine at 7 psi of boost. Here is a graph comparing stock vs turbo in a 2.0 Mazda3

Hmmm...this could prove interesting. A speedy 5 (naughty)
What is the compatability with autos? Do they hold up worth a crap?

Well, the Mazda3 and Mazda6 trannies have taken the power really good up to 12 psi of boost. I do not see why the mazda5 tranny wouldn't hold 7 or 8 psi of boost. This motor really wakes up with the turbo.

I'd probably be interested, but not just yet - probably in a year or so - next year is suspension mods first.

Sweet...Do it! I love the Mazda 5. I was waiting at a Mazda dealer to fix my MSP and I sat in the rear seat of a 5 while I waited. I thought to myself 'this isn't too bad'. I must be getting old but comfy seats are finding their way to my heart.
But more power is always welcome. I don't really have the children to warrant a mini-van, but with a turbo kit out that may not matter. Take out the rear seats, and I'd just have the most comfortable 'sedan' around. Kinda like a Matrix.
How much do you think the kit would cost? Good work guys!

I am kinda worried about the auto trans in the 5. Even if the 3s auto can handle it the extra weight of the 5 could cause it to die faster. Could you make an option for a low boost setup. 5psi without an intercooler, etc. Id like to give my wife a few more hp but not run up a huge bill/cut reliablity to bad. Temps should stay under control to not need a heat exhanger.

I agree with this sentiment. A low boost option suits the character of this car much better, as it is primarily a utilitarian purchase. The suspension and brakes could easily handle another 50 to 75 wheel horsepower, though. (thumb)

Yes another 50 hp, without reliabilty loss would be the way to go. (thumb)
Looking forward to seeing the results.

I also like the idea of a lower boost turbo setup with about 40 or 50 more horsepower. Midrange emphasis, not top end power.

Ballpark, about what would this kit cost? What kind of skill level to install, or should it be professionally done?

Most kits that are setup for low boost tend to run 1500-2000. Depending on how complete the kit is it could be done with basic hand tools and general mechanical knowledge. If it's lacking alot of stuff to keep prices in check it might need to be installed by someone who really knows what they are doing. That should be at the very most 500 bux.

Any updates on this? I am really getting the urge to boost the 5. Juan let me know if you need a 5 for testing, I am available.

I'm in man, that would be awesome power, that is needed for lugging more passengers up hills while blasting the AC in a hot summer day :)
Any idea what the price range would be? Would this be a bolt on kit or will it require tuner installation? Would the kit come pre-tuned? Would the kit use a standalone ECU or a piggyback system? Can you design a valve body upgrade to handle the added power?
Sorry for all the questions, but you've got my attention...awesome

I am still interested. When can we do this? I would take 4 to 5 days to do it.

well I'm certainly watching this. While I probably wont be an early adopter, I'd love an extra 50hp out of the thing. That would make it even more fantastic a little car!
I'm not really interested in drag racing it, but a mid range or low level option would be really nice. Course, I want more gages installed in the cabin too :)
