View Full Version : So how fast have you driven your MAZDA5

Mazda5rocks

I was booting down the highway with 4 or board, and I look down at the speedometer and ...... 180 KM per hour (111 mph).... I quickly slowed down before I could check the revs........ but I think it still had some room to go...
So how fast have you gone in your Mazda 5?

AbsoluteSwed

you might want to break in the engine first instead of keeping it at constent high revs all the time

The Mazda3 has the fuel cut off set at 118 mph. I wonder if it is the same for the 5.

I'm like an old fart driving mine. But then again, I didn't buy my 5 to go racing.

I personally really like the way the front end of the Mazda5 looks, it's great. Interior is nice, and the cars are so damn functional. Now if only they weren't so tall and heavy.

It's basically a heavy Mazda 3 with big doors. So it probably has a similar top speed...

Awesome, glad you like it. I would get one if I ever had more than 2 people in my car (myself included). I'd get it in white and get the JDM tail lights for it (the all-red ones) and get the hiboost turbo kit for the Mazda3 to fit on the 5 :D

Id put the topspeed without a limiter around 130mph. Math puts my elantra with a top speed of 137 (Redline in 5th with stock tire diameter). I dont know if it could push thru the air with stock power levels. Its limited at 115 and the tires I have on it right now are rated up to 115. No reason to go any faster, heh. The rpms in the 5 and the elantra in top gear around 80mph are close within 100-200rpms of each other. Thats just a guess...the fastest I have had hers is 85.

Yeah, I noticed that Consumer Reports have quoted it to bea 17 something second car. I lost some faith in my 5 at that point (at least for performance). Then it made me consider an intake and such.

Wytchdctr
12-19-2005, 08:32 PM
I think I can get our auto into the upper 16s in the 1/4 if someone makes a good intake and I get some custom exhaust work done. Very ballzy for its power/weight.

ok but hopfully you guys did not get it for performance. its a minivan, yes good looking but your not going to autox or drag it. well actually if you are going to do either of those please inform everyone becasue that would be hilarious seeing the look on eveyone elses faces. flim it so eveyone who couldnt make it out can see. also seem all legit when you roll up to, it would be genius.

It's 205km/solid. Not much room after that. did it yesterday on the autobahn got to 180 pretty fast with lots of pull left. After that it creeps to 200 then the last 5 is a real push. This was on the straight-a-way, flat spot about 5 km long. Not really somthing I want to do again. More like flying than driving ;o)

This was with TD not Benzin. Not sure what unleaded/benzin would do.

I'm finding it very hard to drive the speed limit in this car!!

Yesterday, suddenly realized that I was at 95 mph! - I took it easier after that and just cruised at 80mph. I'm also finding that when passing, even when in 5th gear, there's still some get up and go!

I'm thinking that the tires make a huge difference in the "feel" of stability. Even with my snows on, though, the car felt solid. Can't wait for the summer to test out the summer wheels. Thinking about a strut tower brace....

I put strut tower braces in my old 1980 GTI. WOW what an improvement!!! And the thing already had been lowered w/ Bilstien spings and Koni adj shocks. way lighter streering and the whole front end tightened up beautifully. One of the best bang for buck improvements you can make imo.

I have an Automatic and the 5 will do 120 given enough roadway. I only had about 2 1/2 miles of road on regular unleaded (87 octane), with one 175 lb passenger, 40 lbs of tire pressure. There is a slight chance there is 1 or 2 mph left in it, but I doubt it.

Cruising out of town, I knew I was driving faster than normal but was surprised at how easily 90+mph snuck up on me. Yeah, it's revving it's little heart out, but it's a sweet, smooth song and doesn't sound all that stressed. I was completely comfortable with the speed and didn't realize how fast I was travelling. There's surprisingly little body roll from a wagon this height.

Hey, it must be spring; the starlings are in the throes of passion on my front lawn.

We hit 115 on that same stretch of road, I believe - possibly the same weekend. We were amazed at how easily we could maintain speeds of 90-100 mph on our recent road trip from CO to CA and back. It handled the mountain passes quite well too.

This car really likes to go fast and the speed sneaks up on you...We were on the stretch of the 5 freeway here in California where it is a straight shot with nothing but hundreds of miles of open road...While on the trip, I tested it out to see how far I could take it, but I let off the gas at 120mph as the engine sounded like it was working a bit too hard and the RPM's were resting in the 5,500 range...While driving, I got our 5 up to 110mph without noticing a couple of times...

Same here, the wife and I were driving on I-5 late at night here in California and even without another car in sight and all of that open road, our 5 seemed to top out at 120mph...

The funny thing is, the engine didn't seem to sound like it was laboring at all...The rpm's were up there, and I'd definitely try to avoid making it a habit of cruising that high for any extended length of time, but damn this minivan can zoom!!!

As for my regular driving...I like to keep it around 75-80mph on the freeways...It seems to really like that speed and cruises perfectly with 37PSI (cold) per tire :D

My 5 cut off the gas at 120mph on the nose. Took less time to get there than I thought it would, and I had another 1000 revs before redline. Without the limiter I bet it would hit 130 easy.

I’ll contribute to this now… I had a fun commute in today :)

There’s this long 90* bend in the Interstate where it ends and merges into a perpendicular Interstate. I stay in the passing lane and blast past two cars around the curve I’m guessing at about 75-80 (the 5 completely keeps it’s composure the entire turn), then I get to a straight away and open ‘er up. I can honestly say it’s the first time I’ve ever redlined a car in 4th gear, eek! I think I got to 103. God bless the brakes for a great job and the next exit ramp then too, double eek!

I was kind of shocked when I glanced at the spedo and saw the needle past triple digits. I honestly thought I was going, maybe 80-something? The little 2.3 is quite the worker bee, it got up there seemingly effortlessly.

I love my 5 :D

Some people are just insecure in their manhood. That's why SUV's are popular when a station wagon would be much more practical for 99% of SUV owners.

And I agree it's not a minivan. It's a segmant busting "sport wagon".

I've traveled that fast in quite a few cars. Some were made for it, others weren't. This car is amazingly stable at those speeds, but the road I was on was fairly straight, wide and EMPTY. I had lots of space to stretch the legs, but that little 4 banger did it very smoothly and without protest.

I can take this one at 40mph and I'm glued to the driver's side door. I think at 45 I'd start losing grip and 55-60 I'd prob flip. Funny thing though is the typical speed for most drivers around it is like 25-30... a lot of people will be rush hour pricks and get up my ass coming down from the North. They slow down entering the sudden turn, I keep on it and at the top of the ramp they're almost always 100 yards back (loser)

The 6.5" height difference wouldn't make a Mazda5 any more prone to rolling over than the Mazda3 in a hairpin.

What would make a difference is if the additional 403lb of weight raised it's center of gravity.

Since most of this weight comes from below the belt line, I think any slight rise in it's center of gravity is offset by it's improved front to rear weight distribution.

Mazda5 = .79

My Mazda has only been to about 91. I couldn't feel any drift.

My recent high speed experience tells me the car is too high (catches wind gusts really easy) and the suspension is too soft (small dips become potential launch ramps).

If I were to make driving like this a habit (and I probably will), I'd tune the suspension to handle these conditions (and I probably will).

My new tires don't like grooves on the freeway. Add the wind and it felt like I was like driving on ice.

Interesting that you complain that the 5 felt like it was driving on ice. My high speed hijinks was on an alpine road in November with slight trace of snow. It felt totally stable and other than the limitation caused by the governor, was ready and willing to go faster.

I've driven on some California highways that feel like corduroy. Concrete lasts longer, but is much rougher to drive on.

Even at normal speeds the grooves on our highways make it feel like a tire has gone flat.

I'll tell you what, my 5 flies. It doesn't feel top-heavy at all, and corners like it's on rails.

I've had mine to 100mph quite a bit on the highway. I have a 5spd manual though and it has plenty of power. I love the functionality of it too!

However, it does NOT handle like it is on rails (laugh) It's like a dry sponge. My Mazdaspeed3 handles like it is on rails but the 5 is absolutely cushy by comparison.

yeah Its all in your reference I spose. your MS3 is a cadillac compared to my shifter kart, and the MZ5 is a sports car compared to my Tundra... lol

Oh, BTW, I hope that video camera was tied/glued to the steering wheel or something :D :D

Is that yellow flashing light for traction control?

I can't understand why traction control system is not available in Canada where we have snowy/icy driving condition half of the year. Often times in the winter I had to switch to manual and start in 2nd gear to get the car moving. To have TCS in this otherwise perfect family car would be really nice.

Bo, is traction control available in all trim levels of MZ5 in Denmark?

Hopefully it's coming in the not-so-distant future to Canada. With 2 youngs kids I can see us driving a MZ5 for another 5 years. Will be glad to trade up for the DSC when it becomes available.

(laugh)If my 5 would do 135 mph at 3500 rpm I would glue the gas pedal to the floor! What is the final drive ratio on the diesel anybody know? That is one of the best sounding diesel engines out there I think, not trucky at all. Now all it needs is a baby-swallowing turbo from a Peterbilt and about 90 lbs of boost........

My recent high speed experience tells me the car is too high (catches wind gusts really easy) and the suspension is too soft (small dips become potential launch ramps).

If I were to make driving like this a habit (and I probably will), I'd tune the suspension to handle these conditions (and I probably will).

Update: My Mazda5 is now equipped with JDM Mazdaspeed springs and Mazdaspeed dampers. It also has a Mazdaspeed intake.

The vehicle feels much more stable at high speeds and it seems to be able to reach it's top speed much sooner.

The fastest I have driven my US-spec Mazda5 that I shipped to Germany was 124mph here in the photo, and then later the same day 128 was the absolute max on German Autobahn A7 by Bremerhaven. I had the vehicle at top speed for about half an hour. Dry, with three passengers (2 kids), and heavy sidewind.

I just did 105 tonight (when I was playing with my HID aiming). While actually noticing the road right in front of me, those dashed lines flash by pretty quick north of 100MPH :D I think my max was 110 a few weeks ago.

128 MPH in a 5 for 30min is f'ing insanity (boom01). Then again I suppose the US definition of insanity doesn't apply on the Autobahn.

I'm getting too old to drive fast! Too bad the 'ol Montana Autobahn isn't still going strong. I think I'd still keep her under 100 MPH. I did just lean one vaulable piece of info. The $35 I save getting H-Rated snow tires instead of V rated was money well saved! (H rating is 130 MPH)

128mph = approximately 192 feet per second(freak)

I the Kumho Ecsta Platinum LX tires I just installed are ZR rated, but I doubt if I'll ever test them....

It's basically a heavy Mazda 3 with big doors. So it probably has a similar top speed...

My sister's Mazda3 GT in Canada hits the limiter at 190kph. My Mazda5...the same. They felt very similar at speed, but the 3 was a little less dramatic. I'm very, very impressed with both of these cars for high-speed stability. Not scary at all.

Our roads in the US and Canada are nothing like they are in Germany. People don't just drive fast there because they have no speed limit, but the autobahn is actually engineered for high-speed motorcar travel. The maintenance standards of the roads are generally much higher than they are here, and consistency and grade of the pavement is simply leagues better than it is here. You could safely travel much, much faster on autobahn motorways than N. American highways, even Interstates.

95 on a sweeping curve in downstate Illinois (over Thanksgiving weekend). I've had the car 3 weeks, give me time and I'll stretch the legs again. As it is, I've got the '06 with AT, so I've only got 4 gears to work with, getting hit with a bit of a gas penalty at that speed...so I only held 80 for an hour ;)

I've barely ever gone 100 in anything I own, because I know the first time I crack it open, a cop will be there to let me know how 'good' I did, and I can't afford that ticket.

I was really impressed with how solid the car felt at speed, much more planted than I expected given the taller height than a standard car.

thats right, i am driving 100mph eveyday to work and i am by far not the fastest on my way to work (second). sometimes it seems thats this is just the everage speed on the left lane, some go 120 or more.

I have had mine to 127 on I-540 through the mountains in Arkansas. Was running with a Mote Carlo SS at the time. I hit the limiter, but am pretty certain it was at 127mph? or so. I read reviews on the 5 before I bought it, and they posted the governed top speed at 127 as well. That is my story and I am sticking to it (glare)
