If you were in the market for a new sport compact which of these two would you consider?

Speculation is hard...I'd have to test drive both of them. I think the potential to make the GTi faster for cheaper is there, those motors are stout. I'll take the VW R34 anyway.

I could never have a Civic. I see so many and in a few more months the new body style will be everywhere. It makes it hard to make your car stand out if everyone else has one. That's what drew me into the P5. Honda's are awesome cars but aparently everyone is aware of it.

On the other hand the GTI looks like it has a lift kit on it with all that under-carriage clearance.

If I had to choose I would say Civic, it does look pretty mean and reliability is without need of mentioning. Just don't put an ugly Rice wing on it.

Yeah, I'd probably go with the Civic.
I'm not a big fan of the hatchbacks anymore. They used to be fun and had utility, but chassis flex sucks. I know a few braces and strut bars would take care of the issue, but still...I'd go with the Civic.

Shane - I think the reason the GTI looks like it's a 4-wheeler is because of the camera angle. The Camera is on the ground, so clearance looks much higher than if you were standing up. The wheel-fender gap doesn't look too bad.

You're probably right, I was just noticing the wheel gap being fairly small in comparison to the enormous looking undercarriage gap.

Based on looks alone, I'd go with the civic. But I'd have to drive each to determine my final decision though. Don't know a whole lot about the MkV GTI

The GTI will most like be closer to 30K.

Civic with the ground effects kit and 18" wheels.

That vw is ugly

Although i got to say, I can't get used to the mini van type slope of the hood on the civic

I like the new Si, but I voted for the GTI as I frequently need a little space in back. Should have gotten the P5......
