Not necessarily - it's a blast to drive and I still love it but I'm finding myself looking more and more for a "grown up" car lately. I also want something the is already relatively fast so I can tastefully mod it to be faster without killing it's driveability. I constantly find myself looking at MS6's, Legacy GT's, 335i's and G35/37 sedans. I'd love to stay with Mazda and get a MS6. Just do full bolt-ons, wheels and a drop and call it a day. No boost increases, tuning, turbo upgrades or whatever. Oddly enough, I'm also trying to replace my '86 Toyota pickup. I really need something that doesn't require me to take 10 minutes to warm up in the morning when it's cold outside.

ive had a squeeky rattle noise coming from the hood latch area ever since i got the hood put on. it sounds like the latch is rubbing against the hook. does anyone know how i might be able to fix this without compromising the safety of the hood?

Drove home and had a few things happen
Oil pressure drops in a right hand corner and bounces all over the place. Normally, it was at 100 psi at startup unti lthe oil warmed, now it is at 60, and 10 at idle. Oil level is good. I am still 500 miles shy of my 3000K mile change, plus, i have added a quart a week or so ago, it was low.
Oil temp spikes at 250 as well
Second, sitting at a light and i see my engine temp spike up to 250, and then teh stock coolant temp gauge starts to rise, then stops and comes back down (no fans or anything kicked on) and coolant temp peaked at 250.
Then, i accelerated away and i now hear a metal on metal noise on the higher rpms, and, now that I am home, i have a VERY definite ticking.

Both my AEM oil pressure and temperature gauges are fitted into a sandwich plate under the oil filter. Under normal driving conditions I'll see a maximum of around 200 deg F for a temperature and I idle between 22-24 psi with the oil topped off. If I'm driving 60+ mph for an extended period of time I've seen oil temps upwards of 240 deg F but once I slow down they quickly drop to ~230 deg F. Also, after I've burned off a fair amount of oil the pressure at idle is typically around 20 psi. Oil pressure while cruising varies greatly. When I'm above 3000 RPM my oil pressure is typically oscillating around 60 psi.
On another note, I'm getting some vibration from my steering wheel. I'm pretty certain one or more of my wheels are bent and I know I need an alignment badly. I just really want to know what this scraping/rubbing sound is!

no oil temp guage here...my oil psi at cold start is 60psi+, running at 65mph cruising along 50psi, at idle 20psi

Hmm, that definitely sounds like a low oil issue. When this happened to me I was halfway into a 5 hour drive before I noticed it. I limped slowly to my destination and found that the dipstick was bare! When are you checking the oil level - left the car sit for a few minutes before checking it. I believe the FSM states that proper oil-checking procedure is to bring the car to operating temperature and then shut it off and let it cool for 5 minutes before checking. I suppose worst-case scenarios are a clogged oil pickup or faulty oil pump. I'd check the connection on your pressure gauge as well.
mx-p5
12-09-2008, 10:32 AM
I'll check teh connection, but, that wouldn't also cause oil temp and coolant temp gauges to go faulty too. Something is up.

LOL, as for gauges, I already have 5: oil pressure, oil temperature, boost, wideband O2 and voltmeter. I want to ditch/hide the voltmeter as it really isn't necessary for everyday (would be neat to hide it in the glovebox). Sounds like what my old Autometer did. When I first installed it, it always read 50 psi at 3000 RPM and above and always hung around 10 psi at idle. Over time it started getting lower and lower until it was pretty much reading 0 psi at idle and never went above 35 psi while driving. Only on cold starts did it ever get up to 50 psi. no its runs but the because the thermostat is messed up, coolant isnt being ran into the engine. and all the hot coolant just goes back and forth from the engine top hose to the reservoir...and the engine overheats. so i cant run it because it could cause damage to other parts, and lead to damaging the actual engine itself.

Yeah I know how a thermostat works.
What I meant was if you had a cooling problem and the engine didn't run, it means you probably seriously overheated it, warped the head and did god knows what else.
But if it will run for a bit (running it for a couple minutes is fine, the thermostat wouldn't even open regularly with that cool) then you're likely in good shape.

I checked the oil yesterday, it was dry. Just checked 2 days earlier and I "Thought" it was ok, but i hadn't let the car set long enough I guess before i checked.
Also, added about a gallon of water to the radiator. Oil temps are still at 220 after a little while of driving, and coolant temps at 180 cruising but still creeps up to 220 at idle, but i am due for an oil change, as well as coolant flush.
I'm also planning to get a new thermostat while i got the coolant out.
magnumP5
12-10-2008, 11:34 AM
^^^ Probably not a bad idea at all. At least the coolant temps seem better. How's the oil pressure? Sucks about the oil being dry though. I guess it's welcome to the oil burning club for you.
mx-p5
12-10-2008, 11:36 AM
Oil pressure is back to what I consider normal. 100psi on cold startup, 20 +/- 5 at idle, 40-60 cruising
Engine temps are normal at cruising speeds, but at idle they still creep up, but only to 220 tops instead of 240-250
Coolant is doo doo brown and smells like rust, so, i am sure that has something to do with it. I didn't see any oil in the overflow tank, and didn't notice any coolant on the oil dipstick (didn't notice ANYTHING on the dipstick actually)
So, oil change and coolant flush with thermostat swap is in the works for tomorrow after work
Also, would seafoaming it be a bad idea? Since I am doing an oil change, i figure why not.

To flush coolant,
drain, fill with water, warm up car to operating temps, drain again, and continue till I get clear water, right?
Then add my antifreeze/water?
Something else i noticed is i have slight corrosion around my Prosport Temp adapter block. The clamps are tight and there isn't a leak, but just slight corrosion lookin stuff

evilmonkeyMSP
12-10-2008, 12:02 PM
seafoam how to:
-pull off brake booster line.
-fill a cup w/ 1/3 of the seafoam can
-insert end of brake booster line into cup
-have someone turn on car and feather throttle to keep revs up and from stalling
-once all is sucked up, shut off car, reconnect brake booster line
-let sit for 10-20 mins
-start car and go for drive until you no longer have a James Bond smoke screen.

And once smoke screen is gone, do oil change?

evilmonkeyMSP

I find it easier to start the car w/ the brake booster line off (it will run, just not well) then use 1 hand to rev the car using the throttle under the hood and the other to hold the seafoam cup (or Jen will help sometimes and hold the cup while I rev it under the hood)

You shouldn't have to change the oil if your only doing throught the bb line to the intake and/or adding it to the tank to clean the fuel system only if you do the crankcase. You will also have to sip a little at a time while blipping the throttle or it can bog and die.

He immediately told me it is a headgasket. My oil is VERY watery. The coolant, while not oily, said it is brown from the oil, not as much the rust
So, i'm gonna leave it with him tomorrow and he is gonna run a leak test to see if it's confirmed. Then, hopefully the warranty company doesn't pitch a fit.

I was on a road bike on the cement, and, well, there is NO comparison. I feel like i'm slushing along. My new tire is more knobby than they old one was, after melting it with the exhaust. lol
And, i would root it up, but, 12 of the 13 miles is all on main roadways, so, nothing to root up. It really is a boring ride. i go for about 9 miles totally straight, i make a right, go 3 miles perfectly straight, then, make another right and 2 lefts. The roads dont' curve or anything.
But, yeah, it SHOULD all be covered under warranty. 2 year warranty purchased last year with the car.

Hmm... today I woke up early and decided to check my cam gear timing. To my surpirsed it was all jacked up. So jacked up that I'm surprised my motor has been even running for the past year since the shop put it in.
I spun the crank twice and lined it up TDC and the Intake cam was in the position the Exhaust cam was supposed to be in. And the Exhuast cam was just way off. I figured give the crank another spin and check the cam gear timing again. Now neither of them lined up. Gave it another spin and it was back to where it was prior.
After confirming that the cam gear timing was all screwed. I proceded to the shop that put the motor in my car. Told them about the cam gear timing and they said they would fix it at no charge since they are responsible for it. Unfortunantly I wasn't able to do it today because of work and school.
They did ask me how it was supposed to line up. I had an extra set of stock cam gears that I keep in my trunk just incase I need to jack up the car. Yea I roll the front tires on top of them so it lifts the front up so I can fit a jack. And yes my car is low enough to where a low rider jack can't even get under there.
Well since I had the stock cam gears at hand I showed them how they are supposed to look when it's aligned properly (crank@TDC, Intake Mark Lined up with Head, Exhaust Mark Lined up with Head, and Intake and Exhaust Mark Facing each other). They were questionable of my knowledge since the stock cam gears have three marks on them. So I busted out my Macbook Pro and opened up the service manual that I downloaded from flotopical.net and showed them how it was supposed to be.
All in all I'm very surprised the car even runs, and runs as well as it does. What also suprises me is that having the cam gears so off that I didn't bend any valves or cause any serious damage(that I know of). Well been running the car like this for almost a year now. Car runs strong except at high RPM's it starts to bog a little(sometimes) and the dreaded P0300 code that never goes away. I'm taking it in tommorrow after school and there going to fix it for me. Now I'm debating if I should have them put the stock cam gears back in and take out my SR cam gears cuz I need some cash.

Manual states either 5W30 or 10W30 depending on the climate. 5W30 is less viscous at cold startups so it is recommended for colder climates. I know a lot of people will switch between both depending on the time of the year. Once warm, they both have the same viscosity however. I didn't even know they made a 10W40. I only really burn through oil at startup and that's with a 10W so 10W40 wouldn't really help me too much. Do they make a 20W40 or something? Might be too thick in the cold weather but it should help my consumption a little in the warmer months.

Yeah, the thinner, less viscous oil at startup just shoots right by the valve or turbo seals (haven't determined which yet). I can hold a paper towel behind my tailpipe on cold startups and it will have little oil spots all over it.

i had a ?. a while back there was talk of alternatives to a big brake kit. i know you can swap to the msp brake set up: getting new calipers and rotors and pads, but i also thought i heard something about maybe the 6 cause they would bolt up the same and those rotors are even bigger... is any of this true cause i am tired of looking at these elf size brakes through my wheels
6 brakes = MSP brakes in the front.

All CAIs work the same. They're just a metal tube that directs air to the throttle body.

6 brakes = MSP brakes in the front.
I thought the MSP rears were the same as the 6's? Either way, you can "upgrade" to any year Mazda6 front brakes with the exception of the newest model I believe. You can even swap the MS6 fronts just fine but you need at least 17 in wheels I believe. They're still only single piston calipers but it's something like a 12.2 inch rotor. The regular 6 front brakes were also increased in size for the 06-07 model years (or is it 07-08?) and they will fit under 16 inch wheels. I'm considering the latter when I get my 16" Volks as I'm pretty sure they're larger than the MSP fronts.

I wasn't absolutely sure about the rears, so I didn't confirm it.
yeah i want to allow my stocks to be able to fit when i swap them out occasionally. the bigger ones would look alot better with the 18's though. so i just need the calipers, rotors and pads and change out the brake fluids...
how big... or small... is the stock proty rotors anyway??

Just talked to the mechanic. I am leaking coolant inbtween 1 and 2 cylinders, but he won't get to tear it down till monday, so, he says i should be ok to drive, but i need to get it to him Monday.
Also, he recomends putting my stock header back on so i can plug in my 2nd 02 sensor, so there is one less thing for them to pick out, considering i've already used up the cost of my warranty.
I paid $1800 for it and have used it for about $1800 total so far, so they are going to start lookin for reasons to deny me

Put the stock header back lastnight on before the warranty adjuster checks the car today.
Ran around the block. No more exhaust leak, and the Magnaflow sounds mean again instead of ricey/raspy
He's gonna reinstall the Ractive today with the proper spring bolts, cause the ones i had didn't tighten down enough on the midpiipe causing the exhaust leak, so, hopefully when i get the car back, it'll be exhaust leak free
And would the exhaust leak be the reason with the Ractive the car sounds so raspy/ricey?
And, before you guys start raggin on me, i am NOT thinking on keeping the stock header on, Ractive WILL go back on. I'm just curious why the Ractive sounds like it does
