View Full Version : What have you done to your P5 today?

actually the ES protege, Protege5 and the mazdaspeed protege all use the same struts. the springs, however, are different between all three because if you took sedan springs and put them on a P5, then the rear is going to sag. So the struts are the same, but the springs are car specific.
what ever springs u use its gona sag the p5 anyway the rear is gona have a bigger drop no matter what, cause of the rear hatch.
i have the tokico hp struts with their tokico springs and its made specifically for the p5 only, and it still sags.
fyi
msp has tokico tuned (HP) struts...
Or is it that you mean they are interchangeable?
Chicoloco is correct.

IIRC, the MSPs have a different strut setup in the rear - the spring perch or whatever it's called is in a different position. Because of this, the stock rear springs on an MSP are shorter and that's what causes the rear to sag when installed on anything else. This is also the same reason that MSPs get a serious raked look when they go to aftermarket springs and do not change struts (NOT the same as the Tokico HPs you can buy). The same might be true for the MP3s as the MSP is essentially a MP3 with a turbo kit I believe. The P5 and the sedans ES have the same suspension setup and depending on the year and/or options the DX/LX models could be similar as well.

to run MSP setup, you are right magnum, you need ALL the MSP perches and goodies.
Can't just throw on the springs/struts, you need abuncha other stuff.
Easier to get p5 specific, while not nessecarily cheaper

yea that's kind of what i was getting at was that any springs outside of p5 specific were going to cause the rear to sag more. the reasoning behind it was unknown to me, I just know from research that p5 specific springs lower the rear less than the sedan version, therefore counteracting the sagging that would happen. and I forgot that the MSP had differently tuned struts from the normal HPs.

Yeah, P5 specific springs will have less of a drop in the rear to compensate for the sag, thus having the car sit evenly.
Eibachs are like 1.4F / 1.2R, Teins are 1.8F/ 1.5R, and so on...

The maxspeed springs I have on the car now are all 1.4 & the car sits with just the slightest barely noticeable rake toward the front. Has no sag in rear at all. Running tokico illuminas. Have box of espelirs that'll be going on at some point. Hope those sit the same. Car also sat the same way with the maxspeed springs on the oem struts before I got the illuminas.

I was under the impression that most, if not all aftermarket springs were the same for the Protege. The only time you will run into rake issues is when using MP3 or MSP rear springs because they have different spring perches. If you were to swap out the struts on a MP3 or MSP to regular Tokico HPs I would think that the same spring set could be used on a MP3/MSP, sedan or P5.

I ripped the moldings off by hand. I was able to scrub the goo off the front doors with soap and water. For the back doors I had to use a card to scrape the foam off and solvent to clean up the rest of the adhesive. I then washed the car to be sure no solvent stuck around.

Seems easy enough. I notice you have an '02 - any fading? Well, your car is white so maybe not...

I want to. I'm just afraid of paint fade and permanent marks. Hell, I removed my sunroof visor like two months after I bought the car and the marks are still there, three years later, even after several waxings and polishings. I'm afraid the same will happen with the side mouldings.

No fading, and it is an 02. If you are gentle, you may be able to lift a bit on the molding on the back door and check the color. I did this to see and it popped right back in place.

it'll show fade usually on our colors.
did mine, and well paint attached itself to the actual body, and i have lil chip spots outlining the moldings, as well as fading.
mine is 03 1 year newer but shows fading, not so much on black or white tho cause it wont be so obvious but on our colors (blue/red) it'll show.
i regret doing the moldings, because of those chips and fade showing, shoulda just kept the moldings as is.
btw. i used 3M all purpose remover as well as goo gone, and this other stuff.

Well from what it looked like im gona guess that, over time the paint just decided to cover up the crack between the molding and door, and bond to the door itself. and when i removed the moldings it like like tearing off paint from the door while peeling off the molding with the paint bonded to the door.
let me snap a couple photo's later and u can see. but right now u can only see it up close but from a distance u cant see it.

I need to wash mine but it didn't break 50 degrees today...
Back to my original tire/wheel discussion I think I may have come to a solution. I kind of split the difference, instead of 16x7 GramLites 57c's or 18x7.5 Volk CE28N's why not go for 16x7 Volk CE28N's? They're still quite a bit more expensive than the GramLites but they're about $150 cheaper per wheel than the 18x7.5 size. They also only weigh 11.9 lbs per wheel! Paired with 21 lb Hankook RS-2's or 20 lb Kumho Ecsta XS's and you get a wheel/tire combo that wheels roughly 32-33 lbs! That's nearly 10 lbs lighter per wheel/tire than my current MSP Racing Hart's and Kumho Ecsta SPT's. For reference, I've attached pictures of the exact wheel/tire size and color combination I want to get (unfortunately they're on an Integra). What do y'all think?
Oh yeah, if anyone wants to try, photoshop the 'Teg classic red to give me a better idea how the brone will look :D

So today I checked out why the fogs on my recently aquired P5 don't work.
Neither of them works so I assumed a bad fuse. Guess what - fuses ok.
So next is the relay. That's ok too tested with ohmeter.
So down I go, take the right mud shield off the front fender, disconnect the switch to bumper lights and guess what - there was voltage on the connector so that's ok.
So then I took the actual right projector out of the bumper and there it was - a burned up bulb. I assume the same is on the left side since anything else looks ok.
I can't belive it, what are the odds of 2 fog bulb failures? Anyway... that was today for me :)

If you get a chance, check out Catz brand foglights. they offer clear or yellow in driving or fog beam

Thanks,

Last night I had no tension on my handle, like the brakes are still engaged... the e-brake light stays on, and stayed on my my 20 mile trip home last night. don't really want to be driving it if I can't get my e-brake to release all the way.

What are the springrates? Either a) the springs are too stiff for the struts, or b) you have the shocks set up too stiff. Knowing JIC, prolly the latter. Ricer.

Do you have a forgetful old person that you could take advantage of? Old people usually have antiques and shit that you could convince them that they need to give you, then sell it on Ebay. When they forget that they gave it to you, you won't have to explain where it went.

Better design. The AWR is a 4-2-1 whereas both the Ractive and the OBX are 4-1. The Ractive is a decent design but I think AWR put more R&D into their design. The 4-2-1 is suppose to have a smoother powerband.

So I'm curious about something my car has been doing for a while now. While making hard turns to the right (wheel almost locked) I hear a grinding noise from what I think it the driver's side, front wheel-well. It almost sounds like a tire/wheel is rubbing but I am running the MSP Racing Harts and from what I can see, nothing makes contact so I don't think that's it. It doesn't happen all the time nor does it happen when I turn sharply to the left. I'm just curious if this could be something else...

I rub inner fenderwell with the RH's. I even rubbed a hole in the one in the rear at stock ride height. Explain that one...

Yeah, I get the rubbing in the rear, but only when heavily loaded down. This sounds like it's from the front but who knows.

i get rubbing but i'm not sure if it's the wheel well or the fender, but only under full load
and i'm also on RH's

Wheel well you may not hear much. Fender you'll feel in your teeth because it's a blood curtling noise.

How is your car rubbing w/ MSP wheels? are you not running any bump stops?? The RHs shouldn't rub on the lip unless something's way out of whack

i don't know how my car is rubbing! Phen is stumped too!

no, no allignment, and yes stock suspension
but, mine only rubs when i've got the tail end loaded down and i hit a bump
Callie's just has crappy wheel offset and needs fenders rolled
THE Phen
11-13-2008, 03:37 PM
Callie's we understand. The offset is a tad incorrect.
Yours puzzles me like no other. You may have said it before, but do you see where it's rubbing at?

Think maybe the struts in the rear could be going south, and with the added weight it hits inner fender well?
mx-p5
11-13-2008, 03:39 PM
havn't checked the wheels or tires to see where it rubs.
But, i do think it could just be the struts going. Hmm.....i need to check my warranty paperwork. New stuts for free? hmmm
i doubt it since it's wear and tear item, but i still gonna looK!
If anything, i HAVE to get new suspension now! lol

I'd have to take one apart to make sure, but I'm 95% certain you'd hit the bumpstops on the struts before the tire ever hit the fender liner.

i like the "struts going out" idea better
I'll pull a wheel and see if I can see anything though.

Good point. I rubbed drivers side rear towards the back of the wheel well on the plastic. Pics can be provided. This was at stock ride height. I haven't rubbed since doing the suspension.

ive got a wheel question since we're kinda on the topic of rubbing. if i got those 18x8s i posted earlier wrapped in yokohama 215/40/18s, do you think id rub with a 1.4" drop? i know nothing about wheel measurements and number crunching.

I just know for a fact the MSP Racing Harts rub in the rear when there's a lot of weight back there. It's due to the rediculously high offset (+55 mm). I'm just trying to figure out what this noise apparently coming from the front is.

Still, is there anything in the front that would cause a grinding noise when turning?

Last night on the commute home, I got stuck in some stoopid traffic. I guess NJDOT was doing some emergency road work in addition to normal road work during the Friday night rush....so 20 miles door to door took me just over an hour.
I did get to admire my HID's shining back at me from the trunk of the Camry in front of me. lol Sadly when I drove to work this morning, around 3amish, I noticed I had no PS light. Just swapped ballasts and sure enought the ballast on that side is shot. I have a pm in now to Gary to get a replacement under warranty.
Instead of being a tri-clops, I'll swap in the Osram Silverstar for now. :(

Sucks to hear your balalst went out already. Callie's been running the Techone kit for a year now and no issues at all.
Sorry to hear that bud!
But, about her car, she is complaining about the gap between the lip and the car on the sides.
I didn't heat or doublesided tape it down as i am planning to paint next month.

Added just shy of a half quart of oil and I'm certain even now it still isn't topped off. I know I've got a few oil leaks (my feed and return lines leak a little and for some reason I have a small leak at the oil pan drain plug) I just don't have the time to replace the lines and/or fix them. That and I've noticed my Corksport radiator leaks at the drain. I really hate the design they've used there. I need to come up with some sort of plug. Aside all that the car still runs at least, LOL!

Hopefully the Silverstar lasts long enough for your ballast to arrive. Should only be a couple days, but we know how reliable Silverstars are.
Same thing happened to me a while back, one ballast down, but Gary took care of me too... (alright)

One can hope. The other Osram blew out in 6mos...so I'm sure this one wont last much longer.
