nothing to the car yet, but the header went from useless totally stripped threads on the EGR nipple, well, to hopefully something usefull.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y13/cbrjeeper/DSC01287.jpgMachined out a stainless insert slightly smaller than the threads to fill in where I hacked off the useless threads.
letting the car cool down after my trip home and hopefully gonna attempt the swap tonight

Didn't get to putting the header in lastnight. Engine didn't cool down enough by the time i had to leave to run errands, so, Saturday AM will be the test day to see if our "fix" works
Today:
checked my airpressure at home wiht my little pump i got for the bikes, i had 20 when i started, had 9 when it finished.
Stupid thing sucked air OUT of my tires, so, had to hit up teh gas station on ma way in
Gonna try to put the header on tomorrow AM, then, tomorrow PM I go pickup my MSP lip!!
Probably going to put it on the car while black, so i can remove the fogs and sell to use towards paint for the bumper and lip
OH! and, i sourced a full stock MSP turbo. Everything that comes stock on teh MSP
"other memmber" is going to fully upgrade everything on his car from manifold to oil lines, so , i'll hopefully be boosting at the end of the year, long as teh bonus is decent and he isn't asking too much
Still deciding if I should jump in on Turbolife's FMIC deal going on.. . .. . .

yeah, $650 with all piping.
Only downside i see so far is no option for MAF relocation and BOV. Just a nipple for a BPV
evilmonkeyMSP
10-31-2008, 08:58 AM
you have to cut it yourself for MAF relocate just as you would with any other pipes and have the BOV flange welded on after the fact. the BPV line you just put a rubber cover over.

3000K is good for fogs
Sliver5
10-31-2008, 11:19 AM
I already have a kit. When I hit the deer back in July it blew the bulbs out so I'm getting new bulbs. I'm asking if I should get the 5k like I had before or should I go for 3k I know the 3k is yellow and most people put it in their fogs but I like the yellow and am thinking about putting it in the low beams.. just seeing if anyone else would think it looks good.

10-31-2008, 11:21 AM
Ah! I gotcha.
yellow headlights aren't my cup O' tea, but it's your car.
There is an FC RX7 runnin around here with a 3000K HID kit in his headlights and foglights. Doesn't look quite right to me.
But if you like, go for it!!

I was just throwing the idea out there haha I know the LeMans cars and GT cup cars sometimes have 3k headlights so I guess I'm kinda going after that look...? IDK it was just an idea. I'm not worried about light output, anything is better than the stock headlights. What I'm worried about is how much attention I'll get from the (five-0)
aMaff
10-31-2008, 11:32 AM
No, they have really friggin bright white headlights with yellow overlays. Apparently the overlays don't dull the light output as much as a really low temp HID would.

I'd personally go with the 4X00 K bulbs. I have the 5000's and tho I like them, I would have rather had the more white color. I just didn't pay much attention when I ordered them. But, since I have the 55w capsules (they're not bulbs damn it) it kinda just overpowers everything anyway.

And I've got 4300K in my car and 4000K in Callie's.

You have no idea what kinda snags Chico has run into with these things.
We switched shrouds mid project, he tried fiberglassing for the first time, one of the projector solinoids decided to burn up and start smoking, which he has fixed, the housing i sent him was useless, so, he had to cut up 2 of his own spares to make mine,
and now it is time to put it all back together and see if it seals up.
They aren't done cause i'm lazy. Chico has been doing what he can, this project has entailed twice or more the amount of work either of us expected.
So, i'm just excited he is still doing em for me!

Aftermarket warranty company decided they are going to pay for one hour of the 4 it took to install the rear mount, so, since the mechanic did the install before calling teh warranty company for approval,he is only gonig to charge me the deductable and he is gonna eat the other 3 hours labor.

dumb protege question
Can i run with the ractive header w/o the CEL eliminator? Will it cause it to run like poo? Or cause any other issues?
I failed yet again
I had the 02 bung welded in where I "Thought" the OEM spot was, turns out it leaves me about 2" of space to the oil pan.
I could have it rewelded in the header at an angle, but then it will be hanging down ready to catch on the next racoon i hit
Sooooo......if I can run without the CEL eliminator, i will through the weekend until i can have a new 02 bung welded into the midpipe.
On a good note, the EGR nipple is fixed
Scratch all that. second 02 sensor doesn't even fit in even if installed BEFORe putting on the car.
I'm gonna have to cap that off the newly welded in 02 bung, and just have a new 02 bung welded into the midpipe.

(simons my name lol) and i look up and the fuckin car is stopped in the middle of the fuckin road....so i slam on the brakes....i saw that i wouldnt stop in time so i swerve incredibly hard, car doesnt react to the steering wheel and then it turns and im passed the car

problem is, the bung i had welded in points directly into the oil pan, leaving me not even enough room for the 02 sensor to be screwd in, so, i gotta have a new one welded into the midpipe.
Midas wants $80-100 to weld in a new 02 bung into the midpipe.
I will drive the weekend with out the 02 sensor in.
Cost me $25 to do it at my previous jeep mechanic.

i have the nut that actually caps that off already in there. So that hole is sealed.
The 02 bung i welded in came with a cap nut as well.
The exhaust leak is at the donut gasket.
The spring bolts i have came with 2 different bolts. i think i have teh longer ones in now, i am gonna try to switch to the shorter later and see if that helps, but till i get the 02 bung welded in, i'm in no rush
I will say this header is MUCH quieter than the OBX.

Magnaflow probably won't get much louder than it is. That's the beauty of it. If you want it to get louder, throw an OBX header on there and it REALLY comes to life.
But, so comes drone as well at highway speeds.
I just swapped to a Ractive longtube header, and, i must say, the exhaust is not that much louder, when compared to the OBX.

I've done a couple of things this weekend. Installed a couple of blue led's in the little pocket below the cig lighter and ashtray. Hated the fact in the dark couldn't see the cup holders and such. Installed a reactive shift knob and boot. Rezton Short ram intake (cheap ebay one) seems to work ok great sound and much better throttle response don't know about the 12hp the product stated but i didn't expect that. Painted the circles around my gauges silver looks pretty sharp IMO. I'll take/post some pics when i go out to the car to put the gauge cluster back in.
Not sure if i'm allowed and if it's not mods feel free to remove the link. Ordered the intake from cartoka.com Canadian store out of BC. Ordered it on Oct. 24th which was a Friday and got the product at my door on Oct. 27. Even the Canada post guy was amazed that a package made it from BC to NS in such a short time. total cost was $100 Canadian shipped.

I run 205/45/17's and they just barely tuck under the rears. I put 3 people in my back seat and the whole wheel disapears inside the wheel well. The guy that matched tires to my rims definately gets props! I told him give me something that wont rub when I lower and he did just that. BUT the lip on my rims stick out further than my sidewalls which means curb rash really easy. I would like to go to a 215 but im sure I'll need atleast the rears rolled for that.

Magnaflow probably won't get much louder than it is. That's the beauty of it. If you want it to get louder, throw an OBX header on there and it REALLY comes to life.
with the obx headers, does it keep that nice low grumble?
mx-p5
11-02-2008, 09:41 PM
It keeps a VERY nice low grumble.
My car sounded like a little monster with the OBX and Magnaflow combo (still had stock midpipe too)
OXB/Magnaflow combo is not ricey or raspy.
But, do you do highway travel with a female companion? Or companion of any sorts that won't let you put down the windows?
Cause between 65-80, i'm sure you have read, it will drone. My wife and I spent 45 minutes at 75 and both got home with serious headaches, but, she wouldn't let me put down the windows (it'da messed up her hair). lol
Yeah, i do warn people about the drone. LOTS

Gonna check that on my lunch breakThat seems like it would be noisy if that bung fell out. I was wonderin if it runs hotter due to nearing oil change time. I know you don't let it get low, that's the only other thing off the top of head I could think would do that without other craziness going on............Finally got around to draggin my ass down to Loew's to get hardware to mount the wind splitter yesterday. Nope, no pics yet, was knockin out other non-car projects too. It even fits inside the oem bra for commuting purposes. Yeah, spare me, I know...but it keeps the freckle face away so the bra stays. It only comes off to style around the area without any highway cruisin after a wash/wax or for long weekends with no road trips. Grill trim / eyelid painting are next.

it's already got an exhaust leak. Midpipe doesn't seal up to the header.
i gotta shim the bolts so it can actually tighten down. Right now, the nut is as far as it'll go on the springbolt and it doesn't seal up. Gonna probably machine out 2 little stainless spacers, or add some washers

it's supposed to have some give to it, they're not supposed to be super tight. Hell, that's probably why you have a leak. The spring bolts take the place of a flex pipe that we don't have...
mx-p5
11-03-2008, 11:31 AM

Sounds like you're doing it wrong. W/o pics, it's hard to tell.
mx-p5
11-03-2008, 11:42 AM
I know how to put on spring bolts. lol
The springbolt kit came with two diffent size bolts, short and long
The shorter have a much wider head that prevents the springs from going over them
but the longer ones have a much smaller head, and one of the springs has a slightly larger ID so it pops over the head of the bolt.
I'll be bringing home some washers to use as a bigger head on the bolt and also use as a spacer so i can actually use the spring part. Cause the spring is fully compressed and the nut is fully all the way on teh bolt and it isn't all the way sealed up.
If the washers don't cure it, i may just say "F" it till i go get the second 02 bung welded in and have em fix the leak while it's up in the air, or just hold off till I get a new midpipe
aMaff
11-03-2008, 11:46 AM

it's straight forward. Mask off what you don't want painted with blue painters tape, then tape down some newspaper.
BUT MAKE SURE YOU USE THE SUNDAY PAPER! Saturdays ink is strange. (beer)
then, i took a scotchbrite pad just to scuff up the stock paint so the new paint has something to grab hold off
then, throw dowm some coats of whatever finish you choose, just make sure it is BBQ grille paint so it can withstand the heat from teh exhaust

And the Espeliers are just as stiff as the H&R's, the espeliers just have progressive rear springs. If you're going with springs, you're gonna be stiffer than stock anyway, so it's easier to just accept it.

Ask Derek about 3 wheeling with 3 people in my car at stock ride height. I think I scared them.
To be honest, once you lower the car, I don't think you're going to tell much of a difference between those two regarding ride quality. You'd notice more in the twisties. The rear end of the espeliers has the potential to be unpredicatble due to the progressive spring rate. And I'm not just picking on the Espeliers when I say that. I'll say the same about any Eibach kit that's progressive too. I drove a Protege on Sportlines and I couldn't stand it.

yep that sounds about right better late then never!!! I always say at least. lolEspecially with a girlfriend's period.
Today she received a wash; one that was needed badly. I was searching a few online sites for floor mats for my 02 P5 and am apprehensive they might be of poor quality. Anyone bought their floor mats and been pleased with their purchase? Additionally, what I really want is the stock cargo cover and cannot find one anywhere. Anyone have a resource? (No, I haven't tried the Mazda stealership.)I have the Mazdaspeed floormats and they're decent.
They're of good quality, match perfectly with the interior and it does its job.
It's also held up pretty well since I've bought them.
I've attached pictures of mine.

Stock.
I've been happily driving my P5 with no issues for the past two weeks :) Of course, now that I say that something is likely to break on the way home today (hand)
Anyhow, I caught myself looking a wheels again. I'm back to my toss-up between 16x7 +46 mm GramLites 57c's (discontinued, so may be hard to find) or 18x7.5 +50 mm Volk CE28N's (easier to get, much more expensive). I already know what tire I will be using (Hankook RS-2) so it's pretty much a matter of how much do I want to spend and if I want to get the lightest wheel possible. Oddly enough, the 18" Volks are like 1.5 lbs lighter than the 16" GramLites, but then again the total price is like $800 more. I want as light as possible, but I also like the beefy tire look. Either way, the wheels will be bronze...

Hmmmm that's a hard choice. I say go with the 16's with a meaty tire. I like that look as well. Here's an idea of what it would look like, 16x7 +48 with a 205/50/16 tire

This is actually very close to what the 57c's look like. The only difference is I'd be running a 215/46R16 tire for the extra width and the wheels would be bronze. Man, now I'm leaning that way again, LOL!
not to mention a smoother ride then with rubber bands for tires!
Ride roughness and noise doesn't really bother me. I have AWR mounts and inserts all around, am lowered on S-Tech's and HP's, have a full Corksport exhaust and a completely gutted hatch. I also plan on switching over to some BC coilovers someday.
The GramLites route is definitely appealing because it's cheaper so I could probably get the wheels, tires and a set of coilovers for the price of the Volks and tires - the problem is just finding them. However, it's the rail-like handling and 4+ lb weight decrease of the larger Volks that I'm liking. I could always stick with 17's and go with either wheel but I was looking at my Racing Hart's the other day and decided either the wheels or tires need to go bigger.

Well do a search for lowering springs and see if the p5 has a different set then the reg pros. If so then the struts should be the same. I think the struts are the same and the sprign rates are different in the rear of the p5 due to the weight now that im thinking about it.

actually the ES protege, Protege5 and the mazdaspeed protege all use the same struts. the springs, however, are different between all three because if you took sedan springs and put them on a P5, then the rear is going to sag. So the struts are the same, but the springs are car specific.
