LOL don't temp me! Actually, if I could find a buyer for the P5 as-is then I'd actually consider doing something like that. As much as I love the P5 it's been giving me so much grief lately. I'll never sell it unless someone would buy it as-is but until then I'm going to continue working on it. No point in just stopping halfway. Seriously though, I caught myself looking at 3 Series last weekend. I guess people really do mature...

I'm undecided. Somewhere between $10k and $12k and then extra if the buyer would want any extra parts I have lying around that aren't installed. I know it's unlikely but I'm prepared to hold onto it. I'm just saying though, if someone were to offer $10k I'd probably agree and then just sell the remaining parts here for some extra money.

mx-p5
09-23-2008, 10:11 AM
Dang, if I had the extra cash, i'd snag it, strip it back to stock, and build my car! lol

Damn, I should have asked for more, LOL! No seriously, I bought the car for $13k with 34k miles on it back in June of '05 so there's really no hope of getting anything near that now. But seriously, $10k would be very tempting to me (actually may go closer to $11k because a lot of work is going to be done soon). I might actually put up a F/S thread in the Vehicles for Sale forum just for the hell of it but I'll be sure to wait around come January (2thumbs). Still, like I've said before, if it sells, it sells, if not, I keep it. It's kind of weird but I'm impartial both ways.

mx-p5
09-23-2008, 10:23 AM
Even if I picked the car up off you for $11000, strip it to stock with all my current parts, sell it for $6-7K and then build my car, i'd be more than happy!

And it'd still be a savings for me as I'd get everything you've got into it so far.

Very true and I hope you keep that in mind come January :D

But Florida is a hell of a long ways away...

In all honesty, that would be the best approach though. I mean, I try to do the best work I can but there are numerous places I wish I could go back and do again. There were times I got hurried and frustrated and didn't do the best of jobs, some things were cut in haste that may not have needed to be cut and it's definitely missing a lot of components needed to be returned to stock!

mx-p5
09-23-2008, 10:30 AM
I still have all my stock stuff in a pile in the garage, so, no worries there.

What would need to be added to get my car running right? And, any way you can PM me all you've got on the car? Or a link to a build thread or something?

Oh, there will never be a part out. It's just that lately the P5 has been giving my headaches and although I love working on it I only see more mods compounding the unresolved issues I currently have. I'm just kind of impartial to owning it now. Sure when everything is working correctly I love it but those times are getting more and more infrequent lately. So, if someone is willing to take my asking price (which is significantly higher than KBB) then they can have it. If nobody wants it then I will keep it and keep working on it until I deem it complete and then drive it until the day I die :)

LOL, gotta get married first (~10 months to go) and then I've got to finish this development program I'm in through my employer (~3-6 years from 30 June '08) before I start talking kids! Actually, that's part of the reason I'm considering selling. My fiance' hates my P5 with a passion so I don't know how keen she would be to letting our future children ride in it.

See, it's the fumes. I should have made this into all one post but I keep forgetting so my other thought was...

Since people have the 150k club on here and I know people have more miles than that on their p5, it would take me until approx 2018 to get that many miles on my car. Can I expect my car to last that long or does time play more of a factor in killing cars, our cars?

magnumP5

Mileage isn't a really good indicator of how often a car has been driven or the abuse it has endured. For example 100k miles all highway is easily comparable to like 30k miles all city as the total driving time is about the same. I think I recall that some auto manufacturers are considering switching from mileage-based odometers to time-based ones.

So, I'm going to be picking up a Corksport radiator and a dead pedal on Friday. For all this talk of selling my car I'm sure as hell still spending money on it...

I'm waiting until I get this next round of mods installed. Friday is the next big step as it's going into a shop to get some fab work done. A radiator is hardly a time-consuming install. Painted the rear valence on the P5 last night - first time I've painted anything, really.

Hey, Tylor, I know you've done both your and your wife's P5, so I had some questions:

1.) Did you paint that inner groove at the top of the valence?
2.) Did you experience any run? If so, do you think I should just re-spray or should I sand down with something and then add one more coat?
3.) I ended up using Krylon Fusion Black Gloss -- did you use BBQ Paint or Flat black paint?

I'd love to hear from anyone else who's painted their rear valence.

2. I did not, but when it chips (did two small times) I have just sprayed a bit of paint
3. BBQ (turned out flat black)

I'm a total n00b when it comes to painting (as you can tell), but would green Scotch Brite suffice, or would I really need the red pads?
I wish applying one more coat would cover up runs.

yeah, you don't actually need to remove any of the old paint. All you're doing with the pad is scuffing it up so the new paint has something to grip ahold of

And, if it does run, yeah, you'll need to buff that out and respray

Hrm, well with the job on it now, it already did run on two spots.
Would a re-spray fix it, or would I absolutely have to buff it?
Looks like I might just have to try (someone stop me if I'm going to just ruin it more) and see.

just buff it with the scotch bright where the runs are to smooth them out and then give the whole thing a once over. and do 2-3 light coats this time to make sure it has a solid coat and keep the paint even so it doesn't run. The more time you spend on it the better it will come out.

Tomorrow she goes to the shop for some fab work and then hopefully back to me sometime next week. I'm going to be out-of-town next weekend so I guess I'm going to have to wait a while to install the CS radiator and Medieval dead pedal I'm picking up tomorrow. I've also learned some new things about the SS AFC that I want to try out to see if it fixes any of my driveability issues. After tomorrow all that's left to be installed is the CS radiator, dead pedal, DG front lip (I've had this for a while now) and some twiggy cams and an adjustable intake cam gear. After all this I should be good for a while or at least until I start my engine build. I'm seriously going to need to start tuning this thing!

Negative. When I did mine, I used mazdaspeed upper perches and bump stops because they're better (shorter stiffer bumpstops, stiffer rubber in the top hats), but you can easily do this with stock equipment.

If you're running the stock P5 ECU is will make you run very lean. The stock supermap pulls fuel because the base MSP maps are very rich.

Where does he have the "switch" set for the AFC to go from closed to open loop? On the supermap I believe it's 1.1 psi or something similar. This way, with the MSP ECU (or even the P5 ECU) the car drives just the same in vacuum. If you want to keep the P5 ECU I'd set the "over pressure" setting to like 1.1 psi as with the supermap. The only difference is that here you will have to add fuel (values greater than 10) rather than pull fuel (less than 10). Just remember you can't run too much boost with the P5 ECU because it will require you to try to add too much fuel (increasing the MAF signal voltage to the ECU) and will cause the ECU to fuel cut and throw the "MAF voltage too high" CEL.

Now if it is broken what should I get? Another ssafc or the one with timing control? Or the AEM one? I'm thinking ssafc again the one without the timing.

Are you making sure you're actually connecting to the ECU and not just plugging in the cable? It seems there's a lot you don't really know about the AFC. Check out one of the AFC install/map threads and you'll learn a lot. Also, stop asking for maps. Chances are, no one out there has a map that will work correctly with your setup so you're going to have to make your own. I started with the supermap and went from there. Because you can't really do that and you say your current map is rich I would just keep that for now and modify it where needed. Which version do you have? If you have a V1 it's going to be very hard to tune...

How long have you had the shifter installed? I've had my TWM for almost three years now and it isn't stiff at all. Make sure you didn't overtighten that lower bolt or else it will make things very stiff. I tightened mine until there was no play in the shifter and left it like that.

It wouldn't be night and day but it would help. It's all about the amount of torque you can apply to the shifter. Think about it this way: torque is equal to force multiplied by some moment arm. Therefore, you can increase torque in one of two way: increase the force applied or increase the moment arm. The latter is why people use large breaker bars when trying to remove stubborn nuts and bolts. With a heavier shift knob you are increasing the force applied because with the same amount of input from you, more mass equals more force.

Apparently my tourque converter as well as the main drum on the tranny are both shot and there are metal shavings everywhere. So I'm getting charged for both of those, new filter, new seals, new clutch packs.... basically everything new except for the gears themselves, the housing, and the valve body they also said they needed to do something to. Basically it all came down to the fact that a new tranny from Mazda and him re-building mine came out to the same price but if he re-builds it he can give me a lifetime warranty with free service every 12k miles and also install a tranny cooler. So the damage, with 12 hours of labor, is just shy of $3k and I have no choice but to bend over and take it since they already have the work half done.

Get it fixed and it'll be good as new. This is still cheaper than getting another car, which is probably what most dummies would do.

I just ordered an MX-6 rear strut bar off ebay. I am now dreading the install only because of the part where I cut the holes in the panels. I think I might get it powdercoated yellow first.

Just gut the hatch area and leave the privacy cover in place. No cutting or drilling and you've saved a little weight in the process. I doubt whatever you'd be carrying back there cares if the plastic trim is there or not and with the privacy cover everything will be hidden from view inside the car.

When I was test driving the car after a spring install with the hatch gutted, the noise was incredible! Not sure if I could live with that.

Well hopefully I'll find out in a few weeks. I plan on leaving the privacy cover and the mat back there but everything else will go. It's more of a matter that I don't want to have to trim to trim everything to make my GTSpec cage fit than a weight reduction really.

so i have a 4-2-1 header for sale for you mid-power guys out there.... prolly sell it for $45 shipping... there is some custom work you might have to do...
also decided to sell the skunk2 coil overs i never put on....

now... to install these pullies.... hmm.....

also... i had a helper yesterday, gavin, he's in 4th grade and it definately got the attention of the chicks in my apartment complex... girls luv the kids.... now i have him around a lot when i'm working on my car... he knows a lot about cars for his age and i answer his questions about life, college and hopefully girls soon...
