(loser)

No, not really. I've been carefully looking over everything since I installed my new fuel rail and started getting idle issues and CELs. Today I was feeling around the fuel rail and after I had been feeling around the fuel line/fuel rail connection I had a small line of fuel on my finger (from where I had gripped it). I did the same thing again and there was a lot less fuel. It's not a very big leak at all but it's there nonetheless. I just don't know if that is what's causing the odd idle sometimes. I primed the fuel rail and checked again and sure enough, after a few minutes, little line of fuel on my hand. It isn't spraying anywhere but it's there. When I primed the rail, fuel pressure was an even 40 psi. Does that seem right with the car not on and just the fuel pump running?

BTW, it sucks looking for small fuel leaks because everything evaporates so damned quickly!
40 is right if i remember correctly...i have a mam fuel rail ( actually 2, the first one had the threaded hole for the mounting bracket drilled right into the void of the rail(boom06)) anyway, my second rail leaks every 10k miles...i came to understand that it wasn't threaded properly it should have had a thread that tightened as you screwed in the fitting, but no, it just threads forever so it never really tightens down and after some engine vibration it starts to back off the gasket and leak! what a pain!

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? How's your idle? For now I don't have a CEL bubt I've only driven the car maybe 50 miles since it was cleared. I'm just trying to figure out why my idle is so screwed up. If it isn't because of this leak than I have no idea what's causing it.

Just checked again. 40 psi at prime and after 5 minutes the pressure had only dropped to 30 psi. Both of those numbers are within spec but I just checked again and yep, more fuel around that connection. I also just made sure all te fuel rail bolts and bits were all torqued to spec. I usually have a tendency to over-torque things. Either way, looks like I'm going to have to try to fix that connection just to see if it'll solve anything.

i have my backseats out of the car... the cars pretty loud with the CAI 421Header Back... but i like it... it seems louder inside the car... and when i was taking the back seats out... there were bolts where if you remove them, you see the concrete on the ground.... i was like wtf.... so the car doesnt have much sound deadening material...

and on that note... INjen's HydroShield.... i highly reccomend it to anyone with a CAI and hassnt done it yet... and since i have no front bumper either... the intake is sticking out of the car... mind you it sounds louder and gets more air... its also hurricane season down here in florida..... i checked my filter and its dry everytime before i start the car...

Here ya go:

I was in the garage looking in the cars for Taylor's iPod when I heard a weird noise. I'd just gotten out of the back seat of the blue car and I heard this weird creaking sound. I thought it was the car.

I opened the driver's side door of the yellow car, and just as I climbed in, I heard this weird crash sound that sounded like glass breaking.

I looked up to see the ceiling fan in the garage spinning wildly over the cars, just hanging by its wires. Luckily, Taylor was coming back from his bike ride and was able to take it down before it fell on one of the cars.

It was REALLY odd that it happened as I was standing out there. Probably b/c the fan turns on by the light switch so it was running when I was out there.

I was freaking out like "OMG, what if it falls on one of the cars." I was scared for my babies! (nailbyt)

This a great thread but today I'm just posting about doing a timing belt service on my P5. I have about 150,000 miles on it and am looking to do a timing belt. I know I'm lucky to have gone for 150k...

Anyway, I'm getting varying prices on the job from dealers and shops regarding exactly which parts to replace. I'll definitely do the belt itself and the water pump and the drive belts are new. But what about the tensioners? The dealers say they aren't necessary unless they are making noise. I've heard there is a spring that should be replaced though.

Any info and/or advice is welcome and thanks in advance? So far, this car has been fantastically reliable with virtually no repair costs (except for brakes and tires and one O2 sensor).

Got the 02 bung welded in place, drilled out the no-fouler, rec'd all the new gaskets, but, forgot to order springbolts, so, header waits till they show up next week.

All the local auto parts stores have OEM ones but none of them will fit with the new header. So, ordered aftermarket ones I used on the OBX

I have got the same conflicting results....I guess you are better off changing them while you have it apart, especially at your mileage. And yes there is a spring. Here is a compilation of parts I put together for the job.

Timing Belt
Idler
Tensioner
Tensioner Spring
Water Pump
Water Pump Gasket
Thermostat
Thermostat Gasket
Upper Rad Hose
Lower Rad Hose
Camshaft Seal
Crankshaft Seal
AC/PS Belt
Alt Belt

$3.32 !!! WHAT THE HELL !! Pennsylvania sucks.......

QFT....I did fill up for $3.53 today though.

353.8 miles/11.585 gallons = 30.53mpg. Other than a couple of long highway trips this is the best mileage I have recorded in my ownership. Could have driven some more as the idiot light had yet to come on.

Also returned a cargo box to a friend before taking the kids to the mall for some back-to-school shopping.

Pulled apart the fuel system AGAIN! I took everything apart (including the braided steel line - that sucked) and then put it all back together using a liquid thread sealant rather than teflon tape. I was told you shouldn't use teflon tape on fuel system components. Anyway, the main objective was to seal the braided steel line connection so hopefully this will fix it. If it's still leaking I'll know where it's coming from though - it'll have to be the connection of the line and the fitting that connects to the fuel rail. I also started prepping the car for my gauge install tomorrow. Going to install new oil pressure and temperature gauges, yay!

There is a sigificant increase with a header. It's one of the best NA mods you can do. Combine that with an aftermarket exhaust, intake, mp3 ecu, highflow midpipe, COMBINE all those it makes a good 10-15 hp. And with a 99hp motor to start, It's a big gain.

Well today I was just going to install some new gauges buuut when I got out to the garage I pretty much decided I was going to tear her all apart (laugh). I'm going to be installing my MAM exhaust manifold, AWR oil pan and new oil feed and return lines and possibly some other things if I decide to or not. Currently she is sitting in the garage without the radiator, exhaust manifold/turbo/downpipe, intake, half my current FMIC and any oil lines remaining. I managed to install the sandwich plate and sensors (little bit of a pain in the ass) and fitted the gauges where I wanted them. The gauge wires are a little tight because I don't want to extent the wires and possibly degrade signal but I think everything will work out in the end. All that is left for the gauges is to finish the wiring and tuck everything neatly under the dash (it's a mess right now!). I'll probably finish the wiring tomorrow but she'll still be down for a while...

I'm currently waiting on: new exhaust gaskets, exhaust manifold studs, oil pan and for a lot of liquid teflon to cure.

Today was busy and I can't wait for everything to get finished because it's going to be badass. MOTM, here I come...

Very true, but I'm on my way.

I think my turbo is dying though and that's the ultimate cause of my oil burning. I had always checked the elbow right off the turbo and found o evidence of oil but today I removed that entire pipe and down at the bottom there was some slickness and oil residue. Nothing puddling but then again there is still a lower point. I'm going to check out that pipe tomorrow. Guess I'd better start saving for a new turbo now too...

Hey what kind of header is the one in this thread?

http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123716941

mx-p5
08-18-2008, 10:20 AM
The one you link'd is an OBX. Had one before. The one I'm going to be installing is a Ractive.

And, no the thread is goober'd up. Gonna take it to a metal shop tomorrow to see if we can't either rethread it, or weld on a new threaded nipple

The OBX is a good header. It's bout the most widely available. There are better headers out there, but cost more, and all basically do the same thing. Plus save over 15 lbs of weight off the nose of the car while increasing airflow

I snagged a vid of my current setup without the header, and as soon as I get the header in, i'll post up new vid for comparison

And, you got pics of cargo tray? I might take it from joo. It's just the truck tray liner thing right??

And yes, B/O'd headlights will be for sale as well as stock foggys. I SHOULD have new lights by then

its the tray that's under the mat in the trunk... it holds the key of the car jack and such in place... i think every P5 has that... someone told me it was a cargo tray and may have confused me (o.0)

So far, as far as performance goes, I have ebay SRI with K&N, Mazdaspeed Sport Axleback, Tokico HP's with Sprint lowering springs, rear strut bar. I also am waiting for finals to be over this week so that I can install AWR front and rear mount and the SLS side mount. Oh and I'm getting that header. SO what are your suggestions?

stupid question, but, whatcha got on it already?

You wanna stay All show and No go??

Or add a tiny bit of go?

well i didnt do shit to my p5 today, or for the last week, because ive been waiting for my FUCKIN HEADER!!! protege garage will never see my business again period, i would rather go to speedcircuit or street unit anyday

it would have been ok if i would have known the header was out of stock, but on the website it clearly said LOTS IN STOCK, so i said ok ill order

been a week and he told me there on backorder, UPDATE YOUR FUCKING SITE THEN

blame OBX, not ken.

same thing happened to me last year.

its easier for a site to leave it the way it is, and keep peopls business than it is to say its out of stock, and turn business away if its only a short period of waiting time...

i guarantee the OBX warehouse is out them, because last year when i called taht was the exact situation.

I think his gripe is legitimate. If a website says its in stock then it better be. Its bad customer service to mislead the customer is the point he's making.

Today i removed the driver side fender side molding and then got the driver door and rear driver side door's off. and while i waited that 1min for the solvent to kick into the adhesive, rain comes pouring down. so im driving with 2 strips on my driver side and moldings still on, on the passenger side. :) pretty cool

Gah, got caught up at work until about 7 PM and then just decided to take my work home with me. I just finished not too long ago so obviously no progress on the P5. Man, I still didn't get a chance to order my oil pan today either. Argh, seems the P5 is going to be down longer than I thought.

On another note I read something interesting how some PCV check valves might actually cause smoking turbos. Hmm, whenever I get my car running again I might try removing those Krank Vents to see what happens...

Lol I hate getting caught in the rain while I'm doing something to the car. I sure do love some pina colada tho! lol anyway,

I've been thinking about upgrading some suspension parts and I'm real interested in the three point strut brace from CP that I've seen more than a few P5's have on here. Anyone know where I can get one of those? Also, what other suspension mods are best? I don't feel like going through the hassle of the front swaybar so that's outta the question but everything else is fair game.

The CP Racing STB isn't made or sold anymore so you'd have to find one in the F/S Section like I did. A few members have talked about getting some replicas made but nothing has really come from them. IMO, I'd just stick with some other bar (preferrably not one of those universal adjustable ones) like the GT Spec (although I've heard it isn't as good as stock). Don't worry about the front swaybar either - it'll just make you understeer even more. I upgraded to the Progress rear bar and my steering under extreme conditions is almost neutral (depends on the conditions). You could always go for the GT Spec bracing lineup.

What did you get yours for? I guess I'll just have to set up a WTB thread or something then... damn it. Did you feel a big difference when you installed the CP?

I don't remember exactly as it's been a while now. I think somewhere between $120 and $150 is about right. TBH, the thing is a royal PITA. The install was immensely difficult because of all the compromises and now everytime I want to remove the IM or battery I have to remove the STB which involves removing all the cowling first. I keep telling myself I need to get a smaller battery and just make my own tie down.

Eh, AWR if you like the sound. I currently have their endlinks and cannot keep them quiet. I've tried everything to keep them from binding and I make sure they're super-tight. Even so, after about 5 days of driving the noise is back in full force. I've got some stock endlinks that I'll be installing shortly.

Oh, i live in california, were not supposed to have anything on the fronts.

the reason i went and did it was because my interior gets incredibly hot, and my shift knob gets hot enough to liquify gold.

I have an '02 P5, 154k miles and am considering doing two things in the near future to it. As of now, the car is bone stock except for a K&N drop in filter element. As for the two things I'm considering-

Since buying the car, I've always used Castrol 5w-30 oil and I regularly change my oil and filter. I'm considering using synthetic oil if there was a REAL benefit in horsepower or mileage, or protection. A salesman (!) at the local dealership said he gets big mileage gains in his perosonal Corvette by using Mobil 1.

The other thing I'm considering is chipping my P5. I saw an ad for SLR chips and they make some huge claims about horsepower and mileage gains and the chips cost somewhere about $60-70. I'm pretty skeptical of any huge gains, but what can I reasonably expect and which chip should I consider and what do they cost?

Mainly, I'm looking for mileage, reliability, and a few extra horses never hurt anybody...

evilmonkeyMSP
08-19-2008, 11:07 AM
there is no "chip" for the P5

bri
08-19-2008, 12:12 PM
Ok, I guess "chip" is the wrong word, but is there an ecu mod or something along those lines that can help out? I'm the first to admit I don't know it all and I saw the SLR ad and it intruiged me.
Cheers and thanks.

Alright so I did a little bit of research but I still am a bit clueless. I was looking on PG for a good performance upgrade and ran across the SLS midpipe. Now will that just bolt directly on in place of the stock one? Since I'm getting the OBX header, and I have the SRI and the MS axleback, will the midpipe be a smart choice? Or is it different size piping or something and will therefore make no sense?

Oh and should I go catless or will it be waaaaaay too loud with the header and axleback?
