Hmm, 5000k might be a good number to go with. But do they have these for all the different lights: low, hi and fog? Also I noticed he has a 35W and a 50W option - what's the difference?

I went with the 5k because I am not a fan of the blueish/purpleish light as well. Not to mention the higher you go the less lighting they actually provide.

You would be fine with the 35w....supposedly the 50w is for off-road use and you will get flashed a lot more...ask Satimko.

I would advise you to only get the lo beam and fog light bulbs. Since our cars run with both hi and lo beams on, everytime you turn on the hi beams you would get the 'flicker' when they fire up.

And as for the fogs, double check with him to see if he can get the bulbs....IIRC the part number is H3-C.

Hmm, I forgot that the lowbeams stayed on <- shows you how much I use my hi's. How are the foglight upgrades in comparison to these? For instance I see some people get Catz or PIAA fogs.

Yeah, I have the 55w Apexcone 5000k kit. It's...umm...stupid bright? I have the beams focused about 10' in front of the car to not get flashed by every other car on the street.

Other goodies:

Slim Ballast......$105.00 (NOTE: Ignitors are placed outside the ballast)
50W kit...........$129.00
BiXenon..........$149.00
D2R/S/C bulbs..$105.00

Ya, I have Silverstars currently for hi beams, so those in addition to he lo beam HID kit should be bright enough. lol

Sorry...no comparison concerning the fogs. IIRC njamerka is running an HID kit with his fogs, so you may want to check with him.

just ordered a set of AWR front endlinks from PG.

Called the dealership to see how much the bushing would cost for the strut mount. Not a bad price. I'll try the bushing and if that doesn't solve my problem, I'll switch out the whole damn mount.

BTW HID's are the shit. I believe mine are either the 5000 or 6000 and they give a million times better visibility and look much better.

Slim kit provides you with slim ballasts that are easier to 'hide'. I have seen people mount them under the headlights behind the bumper. But the igniters are a separate piece so then you would need to find a spot to mount them.

50w kit - see Phen's pic above

Bixenon are for the sedan guys with the lo/hi beam bulbs integrated

D2R/S/C bulbs I believe are for the guys who have projectors or doing a retrofit project.

I have stock fogs with bluebatmobile overlays. i also put in some yellow bulbs that I got off ebay. I believe they were Nokya's which IMO are really good bulbs that few ppl seemingly know about. The light output is pretty good and they look really nice matched up with the HID's.

This is what I'm trying to find out because the output on the stock fogs is lame, IMO. I'm trying to boost my visibility at night because lately it seems to be very low. So you have the stock fogs but with overlays and different bulbs? They're H3 bulbs right?

Yea they are H3 bulbs. What greatly increased my visibility was the low beam HID's. Compared to the regular halogens, I'd say the visibility increases by a factor of ten without exaggeration.

You should really go HID lows and if you really need more output from your fogs, go HID fogs. Like everyone else said though, no need for HID highs.

Hmm, do they make yellow-tinted H3 bulbs in HID? That with a yellow overlay would probably be quite nice. I guess for the fogs I should go with the lowest intensity (like a 4000k or something)? Only part that is going to suck is mounting four separate ballasts - seems like it's going to be a hell of a drain on my car's electric system.

HID's use less electricity than halogens

and if you want a yellow light from the HID your going to want 3k

So today I thought the end of mechanical stuff would be in sight, but then, CEL with rough idle.

Oh well, back to that later, Go by a couple of salvage yards and pick up a rear door vent window to replace the duct taped piece of card board, a jack to replace the rusted one, a space saver spare to replace the one showing cord and a power mirror switch. The vent window goes in fairly easily, and every thing else is really easy, except the power mirror switch, which doesn't work. I take it apart and after two shots at cleaning the contacts, it works. Get the front sway bar links on, replace the plug wires, reset the CEL, 25 miles later it is back. Gonna have to go after the EGR and IAC next week. There is also a jingling/clunking sound coming the right rear over bumps which disappears when the brakes are applied, which hopefully will get sorted next week too.

Rear speakers, arrived, still haven't bought the fronts yet, probably get to that next week when I move on to getting the front bumper cover repaired, some of the door dings taken out and getting a small patch of rust on the hood taken care. Once all that's done it will be time to detail the thing, and then hopefully put a fork in it for a bit.

Can't wait till this car is squared away like the rest of my cars so there isn't a list of stuff to take care of. The battery in my daughter's Subaru kicked the bucket yesterday after 75 months on a 60 month battery. Took care of that problem first thing in the AM. Oh well, I suppose I was asking for it when I bought a car with a blown up motor...

Did some realistic thinking today and came up with the conclusion that I shouldn't turbo the P5.

The mod bug has bit me a million times and I've been so close to starting to order parts but I've decided that I oughta be smart about it and just wait.

I'm in college so once I'm out and settled down, I should be able to eventually get a toy. Due to the lack of potential without spending big bucks on the P5, I have decided that I should just hold on to my money, save it so that I have a head start after college, and once it's time, buy an EVO VIII. I know, I know what you're thinking. "Blasphemy!" but honestly, I have always been in love with the car and I know that once it's time for me to look for a new car, it will probably be just that. For the money, I don't see anything with more of a presence, speed and handling than the EVO.

The P5 will never be traded in or sold unless someone decided to fork over a lot of cash. I know what the car could sell for right now, and even if I got lucky, it would still be too low after all the work I've put into it.

The P5 will be my little DD and I mean what would be better than having an EVO as the car you drive everywhere and a P5 you've had since you were 17 waiting to take its place if it's grounded for a few days?

Anyway, sorry about the rant, I just thought I should share.

Tandem mount R4. Unlike other RockyMounts products, you don't have a choice of colors, so it's a BIG SILVER THING on top of our little black wagon, but it seems to work.

Cleaned the EGR and the CEL is gone. Replaced the plugs. Back to running great. Installed the rear speakers. Bought the front speakers. Hopefully they'll be here by the end of the week.

Still can't figure out what is causing the clinking/clunking from the rear right. Happens when the car goes over any road imperfection and goes away if you apply the brakes. (uhm)

(bang)...could have been me! hey andrew, you ever worry about oil starvation?

yep... that's one of the reasons it was the 1st time in 3 years I'd autoxed it. But, I check it, top it off plus a little bit, then let it rip and hope for the best. There's a 99% chance everything will go fine.. there's also a 1% chance it'll blow up. Just like there's that tiny chance that I do something incredibly stupid and hit something that breaks / bends something, be it a light pole or hitting a big bump just the right way that the landing hurts something.

I've (almost) always followed this philosophy: never race a car you can't afford to total at any second.

Of course, that's mostly a road racing cliche`, but I think it works for pretty much any form of motorsports.

ya, i hear you...i had just changed the oil and had a full 4 quarts in there with the 626 filter....i thought about it a couple of times before sat. ya, there wouldn't be a whole lot of racers out there if they thought they wouldn't be driving their car home after the race!! it's the price you have to be willing to pay i guess?

pretty much. But 1 of the reasons that autocross is so popular is that it IS very low risk. The reason I got the miata is so that I don't have to worry about it. What's the worse that happens? 100% worst case? 1 of the drivers has a VERY large off and wraps it around a poll. Sounds kinda shitty doesn't it? Of course, it would be aweful, however I'd be able to borrow a trailer, tow it home, and drive the protege to work on Monday. A miata roller chassis can be had for $500 or so, and I've got the knowledge and tools to swap everything from the old chassis to the new. So... in honesty, I could write off that car as a total loss if it came down to it and, while it would suck royally, I'd be ok.

I actually did have the car break at a pro-solo this year. Lower ball joint failure. It sucked ass and totally ruined a wheel, but after sourcing a part from a friend whose brother runs Spec Miata, we had it back in shape by 11:30 that night and ready to run on Sunday, so it could have been worse.

(did any of that rambling make any sense? lol)

Got her back up and running! It appears as all the injector parts just might have done the trick because the idle is more stable now (no more intermittant stumbling). The CEL is still on only because I'm hoping it will clear itself (will it?) and that way I'll know the problem is resolved. I just don't want to reset the battery because the car runs wonky for the first 20 miles or so afterwards and the possibility of throwing another CEL as a result is likely. Now all she needs is one serious bath!

Too bad it's raining today...

Thanks! The idle is still a little shaky and that'll probably be the case from now on with the fuel rail (no more pulsation damper) but at least there is no more stumbling and lean spurts. I'm just hoping now the CEL will clear itself - so far about 20 miles of stumble-free idle but the CEL is still there. I've had P0171 clear itself before but it's very random. It'll be there when I turn the car off but be gone when I start it next or it'll come on when I start it and be gone the next time I notice. Weird.

Welcome to Ohio...

Question for you guys.

Anyone ever compare teh Reactive header to an OBX?

I had and sold my OBX due to drone issues. Now i have the opertunity to pickup a Reactive for an uber good deal.

Might there be less drone with Reactive? Either way, i'm going to buy it, if not for my car, for Callies

Thanks in advance

I know some of the Ractive's had some fitment issues but I think later versions were fine. IIRC, they also only have one O2 sensor bung so you'd either have to get one welded in somewhere (preferrably behind the cat in you midpipe if you have that option). As for drone, unfortunately I have no idea but the Ractive, IIRC while still a 4-1 header, has much longer runners than the OBX. Not sure if that does anything for sound though. My instinct tells me it's still going to drone.

So I had my OEM exedy replacement clutch and the fidanza flywheel installed yesterday.

Im still breaking in the clutch, ive put about 30 or so miles on it so far.

From what i can feel, the car definetly revs up faster, and first gear isnt as much of a pain to get going in like it used to with this exhaust setup. its not that there is gobs more torque in the low end, it just feels like my car isnt trying as hard.

the clutch pedal def feels softer than it did before, but it engages way more smoothly than it did before, which is a def plus. but i wish there was a bit more pedal feel? Maybe after it breaks in?

i havent floored the pedal in gear yet, although i did rev it up to hear how fast it revs now. Ill wait a couple hundred miles before i go zooming around =)

Go driving in stop and go traffic for to break in the clutch before gassing it hard. Your pedal feel will increase with time.

Can I ask who installed it? I have the same clutch in my garage waiting to be installed on my P5.

Ahhh figured out and fixed the noise from the right rear suspension. Turned out to be the e-brake adjuster jingling. Figured it out by smacking the rear tire with a mallet and hearing the jingle. Lightly applied the e-brake and it disappeared. Re-adjusted the e-brake cable and no more jingle.

Cleaned the wheels which were more brown with brake dust than silver and voila, back to silver. I'm surprised and thankful that Scotch Brite and wheel cleaner did the trick. The wheels were so brown I figured the finish would be ruined.

Drove the car about 100 miles today. the first real miles I've put on it.

Front bumper cover repair, ding removal, fix spot of rust, install new front speakers and clean and detail the car and it should be good for a while.

i had a local place i trust install it. They are called allens wrench (pun intended) I know all the mechs there, and they know me. I trust them to do the work on my car, and if something goes wrong theyll fix it.

They charged me 425 for the install, and it was done within the day.

how long should the break in be? i really wanna feel how the flywheel affects my acceleration?

thats a pretty good price. I may see if I can get an appointment for my car.

This is taken from exedy's site:

"We recommend breaking in the clutch for 150-200 miles with mild engagement such as stop and go city driving prior to racing or spirited driving. Do not overheat the clutch during the break in period."

NCZ13
08-06-2008, 08:43 PM
huh. so not that long of a break in period i guess.

i drive mostly stop and go. The pedal feels good, just not as firm as i was expecting with a new clutch, but i guess if what your saying is true it should feel normal after a week or two.

pat do you have the fidanza flywheel?

808MP5
08-06-2008, 09:34 PM
the pedal shouldn't get that much harder/stiffer with an OEM replacement...
when i did mine i got the exedy street disc and ACT Stage 1 pressure plate and SS clutch line... the pedal itself really didn't feel that much stiffer but when i quickly release the clutch it bites hella hard... with the flywheel i did notice it revs up faster (in neutral that is)

o.g.sk8er
08-06-2008, 09:58 PM
oh, the clutch shouldnt feel any stiffer as 808 said. Only the higher performance ones will have a high pedal feel...like a 4 puck. lol
I bet your old clutch was super stiff because is was thrashed. This new one will naturally feel lighter. Should have a very nice, non chattering feel to it after break in.

I dont have a fidenza, but I do have whatever comes on the JDM cars. I guess its like 4 or 5 pounds lighter than the stock P5 flywheel. I noticed an improvement in my revs as well.

i might head down to a mission valley meet this thursday, and this will be the true test to see if the new clutch fixes my issue.

if the engine still feels like its flopping around after a long drive than my mounts will need to be replaced. I would get terrible chatter(?) after a 20 mile drive or so. the clutch wouldnt catch until 2k rpms, and doing starts the car felt like it was going to fall apart.

so i took my p5 to the dealership today to get an oil changed, the brakes checked, along checking that coolant leak smell.

i wanted synthetic to be put in but come to find out they claim they "didnt" have any at the time so they put conventional. my friend's dad is the parts manager and he said they have for my car so i was wondering if they "forgot" to put it in...

apparently my fronts were a bit umm "junk" so they resurfaced my rotors and put in new brake pads. heh they were 2mm? lol..so now they feel much better

they supposedly changed my thermostat wit some other radiator things. my dad is a bit skeptical cause it looked like they didnt touch anything cause my engine is a bit dirty and it still is dirty. so tonight we're gonna look to see if the thermostat was changed and what not. we still smell a coolant leak.

labor was a bit steep i guess cause of the brakes and stuffs but parts was good. hehe on the receipt, it looks like theres a discount. i think my friend's dad did that xD

i think i should go to automotive school heh so labor wouldnt be a problem. my dad used to be a mechanic but he doesnt really touch our sophisticated "ecu" driven cars lol. he's more of a carburetor muscle car type of guy hehe.

yea, mine chatters like mad. I usually just dump the clutch from a stop and gas it to avoid the chatter. lol You should get at least the front mount and maybe the side inserts. This will help a lot.

They're not just sedan headlights they're sedan headlights from '99-'00 which are different from the '01-'03 models like we have. Your current headlight will not work with that bumper cover. To use that bumper cover without cutting you would need: '99-'00 headlights (both pieces), '99-'00 front fenders (both sides) and a '99-'00 hood. I think that's it. It would be a neat swap as I'm not really sure anyone here has retrofitted their front end (using it's the '99-'00 people swapping to the newer front end).

And the following pic is NOT MY CAR! So don't rag on me for having an interfooler! It's Kansei's car and HE IS BOOSTED! lol

No, that is a intercooler. That's not my car, it's Kansei's. He is clearing out his garage of parts before he moves to Arizona

He is boosted, so, it's the real deal, no interfoolers. And you will NEVER see rice like that on my car. If I got an intercooler, it's cause i gots a snail attached to my motor

Alright guys so I finally figured out what my clunking probably is in the front.

I took the wheel off to find gobbs of oil the end of my tie rod right where the rubber covering is. The rubber covering is about shot to shit too and it looks like the bearing or whatever is in there is busted. Here's the pic of the part circled. Is there any aftermarket sets of these that I can buy or should I just go the aftermarket OEM solution (autozone and shit).

Thanks guys.

Boo, it was P0171. Idle was being funny today as well. I don't know if it's because of the slightly cooler air or what. I might try to richen things up a tad at idle with the AFC and see if that solves the problem. On another note I installed my gloss black powdercoated valve cover and some all new stainless steel hardware. Looks pretty good and will look better once I get my new FMIC setup in. Actually, everything is going to either polished aluminum or gloss black when I'm done. While red and black look good together I think that too much of it has was too much contrast. For instance, mostly red with some black (like my old setup) is ok but I don't think the other way around looks quite as good. Once I get some more things installed and more things come out I'll be switching over to black vacuum lines (do they make silver?) and I'll probably get few brackets and such powder coated gloss black. Come to think of it, I should have just bought a black car, LOL. Nah, I like classic red too much :D

Might be the heat shield(s). Check the exhaust manifold and j-pipe heat shields and make sure they're both tight. I know one time I left my heat shield a little loose and I would get this horrible rattling noise at a particular RPM. Scared the hell out of me before I realized what it was.

Ok so today I changed out the outer tie rod on the passenger side since the old one looked like someone molested it.

Thought that was the source of my clunk just because of how bad the old one looked but I'm still getting the god forsaken clunk. It just won't end. Now I just can't wait till class is out so that I can tear into that front passenger area and figure it out.

So far I have eliminated the following:

Sway bar bushings: Checked more than a couple times, they seem perfectly fine.

Strut itself: Just switched to Tokico Blues.

Endlinks: seem fine but I have a new set of AWR's waiting anyway.

Tie rod: because I changed it today.

So what I'm thinking is that it IS the strut mount bushing or the strut mount itself. Once I have time to, I'm going to take the strut out and check it all out. Hopefully I won't have to cut the endlink off but who knows. I just want this damn clunk gone so that I can have piece of mind lol

Are these cars supposed to retain fuel pressure inside the fuel rail indefinitely? I ask because even though my fuel pressure gauge on my fuel rail says I meet all the requirements mentioned in the FSM. I have noticed that if I don't drive my car for a while, say over night, that when I come out the next day there is no pressure in the rail. I just want to know if this is normal or not because I'm trying to to determine if I have any small leaks. When the car is running, the rail holds a constant 35 psi and when I turn the car off it goes up to roughly 40 psi where it stays for a while (much longer than 5 minutes as stated by the FSM) but ultimately, over several hours, it slowly goes down and down. Indicative of a fuel leak or just normal?

Okay, so it is perfectly normal to have zero fuel rail pressure after like a day of sitting. I've just been trying to figure this CEL out because it's indicative of a fuel leak (or vacuum leak) but I can't seem to find one. I did the whole 5 minute fuel line leak test thing two (essentially just running the fuel pump continuously while the car is off) and couldn't find anything. Man, it sure was weird to hear the pump going like that with the car off, LOL.

EDIT: Oh yeah, if I justr turn the key to the "on" position I don't get any pressure change - it'll just stay at zero until I actually start the car.

oh well, header time haha oh and i test fit my turbo mani and my turbo, turns out that i have to remove the egr pipe completely and cap it off or put a breather on it when i go turbo because : 1) theres no egr fitting on the turbo mani 2) it gets in the way if i try to put the turbo in

ahhh it feels so good to do some real work on a car with nothing going wrong

Hit the nail right on the head! I'm planning on running these although I have to save a decent amount of money and I plan on finishing the remaining bolt-ons to the engine (manifolds, FMIC, downpipe, exhaust). As for tires I'm actually going to go with some Hankook Ventus RS-2s. I hd considered the RT-615s but they aren't the fantastic tire they once were (there are others out there that are better now). Funny thing, I'm going to go with 18x7.5 wheels and 215/35R18 tires because it's actually lighter than the 17x7.5 and 215/40R17 setup with the same tire!

I overheated way bad yesterday on the way to work. So I replaced the thermostat and radiator cap. All is well, I even checked the oil after the overheat and no milkshake so I am pretty sure I did not hurt the head or head gasket.:)

Quick question. When you guys replaced your front motor mount, from where did you access that bolt? underneath or above? It may just be my auto tranny but I can't easily access the bolt from any which way.

justanothermp5
08-12-2008, 10:51 AM
get it on a lift and get underneath with a breaker bar, that would be the easiest way

i couldnt get mine out at all either on jack stands or through the engine bay
so im guessing a lift will be the only thing left lol
i just go to the local hobby shop on base, they let people use lifts and there air tools for 5 bucks an hour

Yeah, I got to the bolt from the bottom of the car because it was the easier of the two paths but I also have a 5-speed so that could make a difference. What are you using to get at it?

First of all.

Drove it for the first time in 2 weeks. Was gone for a while. Started right up with a little high rev vroom as if to say she is ready.

Also 16w FTW.

And fog lights FTW. Just fix that fog. Mine had a hole in it. Just took a day to fix with lots of glue. Has been working fine for a month now and I always have my fogs on.

Fog light mod FTW.

Nice sig Ty.

Actually my next mod will be installing my Reactive header after it shows Thursday. Gotta take it to a local metal shop to have em drill out and weld in a second O2 bung. It's only got one right now.

I'm using a long handled socket wrench but I can't straighten it out to 90 degrees because the black metal thing that it bolts into from underneath is in the way. I was able to get those two bottom bolts loose fairly simply but the one straight thru the middle is a bitch.

My uncle has an impact wrench but due to the tranny being in the way, there is no way to get to the bolt even with extensions. I'll make sure to use and extension and a wrench next time. He just didn't have any at the time.

Well I didn't really do anything to the P5 today but I did just order a shitload of new tools so that I finally can rely on only myself for tools. New wrenches, ratchet, breaker bar, impact wrench shallow sockets both metric and sae (14 piece each), impact wrench deep sockets both metric and sae (12 piece each), 3 piece impact extensions, and most importantly an electric impact wrench. It's gonna be like christmas here soon since my seats are just now getting ready to ship out as well.

Put the bumps back in last night.

Everything is working great.

She was parked outside the whole time, so I took everything out that was of value. Even left her with just a quarter tank of gas so there was no gas to steal. Apparently that is the new trend around here. I don't really know the point, as my gas tank isn't that large, but apparently ford cars are pretty easy to steal from, and people aren't that smart. It was just a precaution.

Now just another day of work, and 4 more days off!!!

No, not really. I've been carefully looking over everything since I installed my new fuel rail and started getting idle issues and CELs. Today I was feeling around the fuel rail and after I had been feeling around the fuel line/fuel rail connection I had a small line of fuel on my finger (from where I had gripped it). I did the same thing again and there was a lot less fuel. It's not a very big leak at all but it's there nonetheless. I just don't know if that is what's causing the odd idle sometimes. I primed the fuel rail and checked again and sure enough, after a few minutes, little line of fuel on my hand. It isn't spraying anywhere but it's there. When I primed the rail, fuel pressure was an even 40 psi. Does that seem right with the car not on and just the fuel pump running?

BTW, it sucks looking for small fuel leaks because everything evaporates so damned quickly!

EDIT: Just checked the FSM again and it says fuel pressure should be between 39-45 psi which I am just barely in. I also need to re-check the hold pressure. It's supposed to be greater than 22 psi after 5 minutes which I'm fairly confident it is but I need to make sure. I just don't see how something so small could have such a profound impact.
