s'all good...nobody got hurt and that's what's important. One of the nearby residents said that just last year a woman on a motorcycle went over that hill and ended up in the hospital for a while.

here's what else I just did to my p5 today:

used my spare keys to get into my p5 at the repair shop parking lot and swapped the p5 ecu back in, took out the daveb rings, msp mats, fog delete grills, antenna, and wheel locks in case the car is totaled and they don't let me take stuff from the car anymore...

Had a CEL come on last night when I moved my car from my g/f's place back to mine after sitting for two days. Tried to get it scanned at an Advance Auto but their scanner was broken. Filled up because gas was low after my long trip on Thursday and left the car running for about 10 minutes while I thoroughly checked over everything again. When I got back in the car to turn if off the CEL was gone. I don't get it, but I won't argue with it...

For this, I shall hate you for a long time! LOL, be sure to give us a lengthy detailed description of the coilovers. My next setup will be coilovers and I'm stuck between the Tein SS or the AWR setup. The Teins are cheaper but have less adjustability and no upper strut mounts. While I won't be racing much I do like to get as much out of this car as possible :)

I pulled a few more things off the car (mazda6 rear wiper, spare tire and sub, back trunk cover thingy) and also talked to the guy at the shop where my car is sitting.

He said the car probably wouldn't be totaled due to the low miles and the fact that the airbags didn't deploy. I really hope he's right!

the fact that the airbags didn't deploy is gonna be huge and that may save you. if the airbags deploy its automatically totaled is it not? although from the pics i'm really surprised that they didn't!

Dropped off the Wagner header at the machine shop to have the EGR bung cleaned up. Dru (wife) said I couldn't put it on her P5 until the car's warranty expired (it did, in December) and that I couldn't put it on if it was going to throw CEL's every 6 weeks like it did on my car!

Well, I'm wasting my whole day running back and forth to the machine shop, but I guess we'll be good to go after this! I'll be spending about $50 all told.

The welds were cracked at the collector, badly enough to see light through! Here's a quick image of what cracked:
http://www.msprotege.com/members/Foolish/HeaderDiagram.JPG
Any more cracking, and the little diamond-shaped bit in the middle might have fallen into the cat.

As for whether or not the header does anything, I thought it did when I had it on the LX, and it's the only one legal for STS. Also, I'm going to be going back to Northern VA, and we have emissions inspections there, so keeping the cats is a good idea. ...and no, it didn't make much noise.

Put in new oem front strut bearings. Would have said replaced but there was no strut bearings to replace lol. They were completly non-existing. While doing that i noticed my sls motor mount bracket was cracked all the way through. Ordered the new and improved steel bracket. To bad the shipping cost more than the part itself. And cuz the side mount broke now the front sls mount bushing is coming out. Might have to replace that one too but this time im going with awr. The only good news is now my car doesnt clunk when i turn the wheels and the rear awr mount still looks brand new along with the street^^^^ driver side mount.

Since the forum's auto-grudge-holding software will no longer allow "street" and "unit" to be used together, I propose that people henceforth refer to the unmentionable shop as "Street Eunuch."

It will get by the software, it sounds close enough that we all know what we're talking about (not that we didn't know anyway) and it's sufficiently insulting to make the grudge-holders happy, I hope. If not, I'll get "instigating drama" points for this! ;)

Wheel bearing maybe?

808MP5
03-11-2008, 04:06 PM
ok, what is a strut bearing???

Its a little plastic bearing that goes between the strut mount and spring plate. It's a weak bearing obviously cuz one side didn't even have the bearing in there and the other side had just a little plastic piece left.

You know you need new ones if when you turn your wheels it sounds like your springs are binding creating a pretty loud clunk/tapping noise. After replacing them there was no more noise and the steering feels a lot smoother.

Installation is a little tricky espescially with out proper tools. You'll need a 14 and 17mm socket and a pretty big ratchet to get the bolts off the mount and strut. A hammer which i didn't have to hit the four bolts out the top of the strut mount to seperate the strut mount from the spring plate (i just used the ratchet). The four bolts that hold the two pieces together have teeth in them to stop them from spinning when putting them back on but they didn't stop the bolt from spinning. I had to use a small pliers and a lot of muscle to hold the bolt so it didn't spin. After completing one side i just went to a neibors house and borrowed a pair of vice grips which you "will need" to hold the bolt.

BTW anyone know what coilovers comes complete with top mounts like the KSports? I'm looking for some but don't want KSports. Seen the TeinSS but says the pillow ball mounts are "optional" but might not even be an option for pro5's. And don't want to try any new products either. Just want to stick with something that has actually been used and tested by current forum members. L8R (chris) is selling his BLOWN KSports and he says he would never buy those again. Didn't even last a year.

Heres the illustration but it's not totally correct.

http://img.mypicgallery.com/nothinghere/untitled-1-copy.jpg

#10 is the strut mount
#11 is the strut bearing
#15 is the spring plate.

#10 and #15 is held together by the four bolts. Actually not held together just held in place. The spring plate just has for holes for the bolts to go through. The bearing sits in between and creates a small gap between the two pieces. You can probably tell if your bearing is trashed by feeling the top mount. If there is no gap there is no bearing. I had a hard time figuring it out myself.. I was like where does the bearing go because the two peiced looked like one piece but after close inspection i noticed that if you banged it they actually are two pieced. And the spring plate looks nothing like the illustration. Its just a flat piece of metal... Another thing missing from the illustration is a thin platic gasket that goes on top of the strut mount.

Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera along with me when I went to see the cracks, so I only have the finished repair to show off.

To fit the biggest pipes in the space available, they left very little metal between them. It's not so surprising, then, that the thing cracked where it did!

Total cost of drilling out the EGR tube and re-welding the pipes: $45!! I'm pretty happy with that!

Ha, yeah those numbers are a little off. I dyno'd again back in late October and put down 183 whp and 185 wtq. This is funny because between then and the first dyno I had added a full Corksport exhaust (in exchange for my catted MAM/Magnaflow system), Exedy Stage 1 clutch, Fidanza 7/5 lb flywheel, SplitSecond AFC V2 (untuned but the supermap is still better than stock), ATP wastegate actuator (gives 7 psi) and MPiNick Stage 1 turbo upgrade (GT28RS compressor wheel shoved into the stock GT2554R turbo). Either the first dyno was way off or I was actually boosting higher (maybe 8-9 psi?) due to the stock wastegate actuator (which could have been going).

Since October however I have tuned the AFC for 10 psi, added a 626 IM with thermal spacer and I'm now retuning for 10 psi. We might be having a somewhat local (VA-wide) dyno day in May that I might be able to make it to but I'd like to think that I'd be over 200 whp when I finish my tune.

This year should be good though because I'll be getting yet another IM (505zoom's), a new higher-flowing fuel rail, a new FMIC setup and intake, and maybe getting an exhaust manifold (from Pirana). I also might pick up some of Brach's pulleys when everything gets worked out. One thing's for sure, I'm not going any higher than 10 psi until I get a built block sometime in the distant future.

Ha, I wish. Even with starting my job in June I think it'll at least be a year before I'm comfortable with buying a built block. I also want to get a lot of headwork done (valves, camshafts, etc.) and do some transmission work (revised '03 transmission + welded revised MSP LSD). It would be nice to get most of that stuff all at once so I have wait for a big install day. Then the real fun begins - WRX 440cc injectors, Walboro 55lb fuel pump and 15 psi here I come. Also going to need a custom 3" exhaust in the near future. And that would be about it for the engine - any more would be overkill on a FWD vehicle not to mention the driveability goes down as the power goes up. If I can land somewhere between 275-300 whp in the end I'll be happy.

On a different note, what wheels are those in your sig? They kind of look like Gram Lites 57c or the 5Zigen F(something)s?

Nah I wish they were Gram lights or even some FN01R's. They're offbrand. MB Wheels, Competition. 16x7 +40. But at 12lbs a piece I'm not complaining. Especially for $400 shipped to my door. They're a great improvment of the stock chromies.

12 lbs a piece?! That's crazy - even lighter than the 16x7 Enkei RPF1s! Do you get a lot of rubbing with the +40? I ask because I'm looking to go the 16x7 route and am trying to find some good, light wheels.

what have I done to my p5 "tonight"?

Installed progress rear sway bar in the dark. Light? My finger tips worked just as good as a flash light. Next to the end links; proping the flash light angle was the hardest part. But got a great trick removing the stock end link that ppl love to cut off. Just use your foot to crank that puppy off.

Yea when I grabbed the box off my driveway I was expecting to do some heavy lifting and I almost fell over backwards cause the box came right up. lol I was really shocked and thought maybe they had sent me 15's or something but I opened them up and they were the right size so I put on my home scale and they came out to an even 12 lb. a piece.

I had some rubbing issues in the back when I had the k-sports slammed but I think its because I have a 205/50/16 tire. If you had a 205/45 or even the stock 195/50 I doubt there would be any rubbing. It's rubbing on the side wall of the tire so its just barley not making full clearence. If I rolled the fenders some more/properly I don't think it would be a problem.

One thing's for sure, I'm not going any higher than 10 psi until I get a built block sometime in the distant future.

dang, i'm not gonna lie... i'm a little jealous. Props for doing everything the right way and at least attempting not to zoom zoom boom. This is pretty much the route that I'd like to go by next summer. although i have a lot to learn by then haha. keep up the good work!

Yeah took me about a year and a half before I finally decided on the turbo route. Initially I was going to save up for a HiBoost kit but went the MSP way due to ease and safety. I've really tried to be safe all around but I'd be lying if I said I never encountered any problems. Car runs funny sometimes not to mention all the random CELs I get from time to time that will randomly clear themselves. Definitely no looking back now and I'm happy where she is - just looking to complete the package eventually. I'll admit I didn't know anything at first either but I stuck around, lurked in the MSP and F/S sections and slowly built my knowledge and parts store. All in all, it took about 7-8 months to get everything together and installed. Been one hell of a trip...

Hewas like "What?!?"

Then he told me how much he liked the sound of the exhaust and asked,

"Dude, what exhaust is this? It's nice!!"

I told him, "Magnaflow catback."

Then he went to pull it out of the bay and ask'd where I got the shifter. Told him, "It's the full short shifter kit from TWM with the poly bushing instead of the rubber."

He started just throwing it through the gears saying, "Man, I wish my car shifted like this!"

Replaced the dreaded sls aluminum bracket that cracked in half five days ago with there new and improved steel bracket. New yes improved sorta. Had to improvise to get it to go on and it still doesnt fit right. Had to grind down one side cuz the hole wouldn't match up. And the hole thats for the actual mount is a little high causing the bushing to stretch upwards. This sucks but its better than the cracked bracket. I'm definently going to change me passenger side mount for a better one like the one from sheep unit. Also going to change my front sls for an awr mount.

Medieval is another name that Brach's products are going under. At least I have seen both names used for the lightweight pulleys on here. It is just the radiator cover (similiar to the Air Diverter Panel).

Mine's never really been seriously cleaned before. Other than me dusting with a rag on occasion. Lives in garage, no winter driving conditions. That header is starting to annoy me tho. May have to drive around with the oem bolted back up & get the OBX coated & have bung for wb02 put on for MPI tuner action forthcoming........happy sigh...so many mods, so little time. LOL. Taking off week of vacation mid April just to stay home, do car projects, ride bikes, FO or whatever. Got new M3 style grill, eyelids, MPI & all that goes with it, maybe new tunez & more that I'll be dabblin with that week.

Installed the AWR header today. Snapped one of the bolts because it was cross-threaded. Anyone know how to fix that? I am driving with 2 bolts missing from my header (cross-threaded another one, but was able to get it out before it snapped). How bad is that? I suck at modding

So, I'll ask here, since searching "MP3 intake manifold" got me no useful answers:

Would I get any additional power out of the MP3 intake manifold? Would I need the MP3 ECU? Will the P5 ECU throw CELs with that IM?

I figure someone on this thread would know.

Additional power? Yes. The MP3 intake mani is less restrictive as it deletes the P5's VTCS flaps. The MP3 ECU maximizes this added airflow by adding more timing, but is not absolutely necessary. To prevent a CEL, you just keep the VTCS solenoid power wires plugged in. I've got two of them, and one is for sale lol ....

Thank you Bala. My friend has an essentially extra one sitting around, and I was considering taking it off his hands. He's got the valve cover with the valve cover-cover thingy, too, and it's tempting to do an MP3 semi-conversion on the P5. I'd need to find an ECU to finish it out properly, though, and my wife would not take well to the idea of paying $.20 more per gallon of already overpriced gas! ;)

All of that would throw me into higher class for autocross, too. ...Not that I'd be competitive as-is with it in STS anyway!

So, it's still tempting...

well I try to shift between 2.5k and 4k. Once in I while I'll take her to 6k. I would say I drive 80% stop and go traffic. 10% city. 10% freeway w/no traffic. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with advancing both cams 3degrees because before that I only used to get 300 to 310 before the gas light comes on. Now it come on at 350+ miles. Since I do mostly stop and go traffic and my cams are set for low end is why I think i get better mileage. And this is using 87octane. Tried higher octane fuel but 87 gives me best mpg. And this is all short trip drives cuz i live on an island.

its easy taking out the stock ones. The most important thing is putting everything back the exact same order/position u took it out. I followed the instructions in the workshop manual. Honestly i have both intake and exhaust cams and little to no gains were felt. But im sure if i got the properly tuned/adjusted it would help but shops down here are asking $300 just turn some gears and dyno time. Sh1t im thinking ill pay $100 for three runs and adjust it myself. If i didnt already have them i would spend the extra $300 and try the integeral cams.

Everything can be done with hand tools and a buddy.

i know it's weird..(uhm)...and i got to tell you, i spend a lot of time down shifting and riding around town in 2nd....i got almost 29 mpg last year on our cruise out to lime rock...and believe me, i was in and out of boost climbing the hills and trying to stay up with the others! now if i'm on it a lot my mileage will drop down to 23-24ish

magnumP5
03-20-2008, 01:24 PM
Eh, it really all depends on how you drive. I like how most people believe that shifting earlier and keeping low engine speeds will improve gas mileage. While this is true to some extent all engines have a speed at which they are the most efficient. I know for a fact that when I tested this by shifting into 4th to cruise at about 30 mph around town my mileage actually got worse than it was when keeping it in 3rd! For me, I like to keep the RPM a little higher because I can accelerate better without having to go into boost if I'm riding around at 3000-3500 before shifting. Any lower and it feels like the car always wants to go into boost and that's where the big time fuel consumption goes. For the record I can usually get about 28 50/50 city/highway which is where I do most of my driving. I would say as low as 22 mpg all city but as high as 32 mpg all highway.

i12drivemyMP5

I'm NA sport auto & pull 340 a tank of maybe 60/40 hwy/city driving with the hwy driving being 75-80mph & 13 or so to top off. AC no difference. About 24-25 mpg avg. I'm sure if I kept it under 70 that'd go up. Usually htiing 125-135 at 3/4 tank on gauge. Never moves from full until 70-80 miles. Hoping the MPI/wb02 + tune dialed in will yield a bit more after killing the rich ass afr I'm most likely sitting on while at usual hwy speed which is about 3300-3500 rpms.

Finally claybar'd and waxed my car! Smooth as silk! Unfortunately, the front mazda emblem fell off. Do I just use double-sided tape to put it back, or is there something else?

Karl (rotaryman25) looked at my car today. #4 went bad due to oil starvation.

He's going to pull the motor for me and combine Motor #1 & motor #2 to make motor #3. While the car is at the shop he is going to swap in my mazdaspeed limited transmission with the welded diff. He said while the motor is out he'll install my mazdaspeed front sway bar. In trade I'm giving him my current 5 speed for his other P5 with an auto (he has two P5's, a first gen RX7 and a MX6).

Well that is some bad news, but even better news though! You will have a sweet motor and tranny when it is all said and done.
