Its oil starvation from weak oiling systems. There is even an article about it in Mazdasport Magazine. Doc B racing has discovered this problem. They are working on a solution. Horsepower freaks have also offered a solution to this problem with the FSDE motor..
Exactly how my first engine died. Except I was lucky with my extended warranty and mazdausa mis-diagnosing what the problem was.
You should autocross more. I'm reading this going... "yeah, it's supposed to do that" lol
For the record, I'm in no way condoning hanging the car out around corners on the street, BUT: if you want to learn car control, autocross for a couple seasons. You'll know exactly what the car's going to do in 99% of any situation you'll get in on the road.
It's not a matter of not being able to handle the car, I knew the back end was going to come out, it was pretty predictable. It's fun too, and scary at the same time on small streets...
I was just trying to say that if I stiffen up the rear too much without stiffening the front as well, I'm going to be sideways all the time.
I'm definately Autocrossing this summer, without a doubt.

I gotta find out where they autox around me. I know Moroso speedway has track days and what not, but, I gotta do some more looking into it.
By the way, motor mount still hasn't shown, but, the mechanic needs his garage bay back and is putting the motor back in. so, hopefully this afternoon or tomorrow I'll have my car.
Side note, just won a set of window vents off Ebay. Now I can leave the windows cracked during the day and not die from heat stroke when I get in the car. Had em on my Jeep and I didn't realize how much I used em!!

You can also try NASA, the other 'major' motorsports player. Then there are the marque clubs who usually welcome other cars in a 'visitor' class. BMWCCA, Porsche Club of America, etc.
EDIT: That's less than an hour! I have to drive that long just to get to our events at Atlanta Motor Speedway... We trailered the car 4 hours south to Valdosta this weekend. Then again, I'm a nut job.

last time i looked at nasa, it looked liek they dropped their FL division of NASA-X which was their autocross part....the only thing i've found is a group that used to be NASA that does it in my area and in brooksville that goes by NASA rules...

How's the difference?
I'm scared that if I install this sway bar, the rear is just gonna be so stiff that the it's going to slide out in hard corners.
It's happened twice to me already with the stock sway...
Took it around a few corners pretty hard. The car didn't understeer at all, but the rear end didn't step out either. I guess it's because of my crappy Nexen tires that came with the car lol.

I've lost an oil cap once on the freeway "don't trust sears tightining your oil cap". Didn't realize it till the next afternoon randomly inspecting my engine bay. I was wondering what that loud clunk was the day before. It wasn't pretty at all... I had oil all over the engine bay. It took my a while to realize my oil cap was missing.

Hell, I wish I would've lost the whole thing. Unless I can get another set screw I'll either have to glue the sucker down (and give up the feature) or buy a whole new one (not damned likely!). I've already sent an email to Ken at PG to see if there's anything he can do for me. I really doubt I'd be able to find something like this at a fastener/hardware store.

My buddy has sirius and he loves it and the sound quality is very good, i haven't heard of anyone having sound quality issues. And my regular radio reception isn't all that good for some reason and i was told if it isn't that good then the HD signals won't come in well either. Therefore i went with satellite.

Before you freak out because of what everyone else is saying check out the stock pressure sender. I have read about cases where these have gone bad/had a bad connection/etc. I am inclined to believe this especially because you say your oil level is fine (although I do not know what "fine" means). Start with the cheapest solution and work towards the most expensive. I learned this lesson after I bought a new O2 sensor when really all I need was a downpipe stud.

Nope, no clear coat. I've got a pic of her car painted too. It looks sooooooo much better painted!! And, so far so good as to the paint holding up. I used the Krylon black BBQ paint. I used some red scotchbrite pad to roughen the surface a hair and wiped off any dust and taped off the back and sprayed.

Thanks...I was tossing it back and forth if they would be worth it and after last Friday when I couldn't make it out my neighborhood in two inches of snow, I decided it was worth it.
Hell, with the Winter we're having, he can still get plenty of use for them for the next 6 weeks...
You guys have been hit pretty hard this year. We are supposed to get another 3-5 tonight but I wont have to drive the car this weekend. am hoping to get them mounted next weekend and then I will bag and store them in my shed until next snow season.

there's two different ones. The cheaper are the ones that go with the lip. The more expensive one go with the stock p5 bumper. The mazdaspeed lip is cool I traded mine for some p5 deletes. Though the dg lip is the one u want. Maybe.

I have had mine at the manual specified height for the last week (1" of thread from the bottom) and they have been nothing short of amazing. I am going to drive about 90 miles tonight up to my GF's parent's house, so I will report back.
The SS come with adjustable dampening, where as the basics are just set.

w00t! Actually got some work done today! Finally installed the Progress rear swaybar with the AWR endlinks. I tried to install them as to allow for the least amount of stress on the bolts and for the bar to be as close to horizontal as the control arms would allow it. Also FINALLY changed my transmission fluid to some Redline MT90 - been needing to do that for almost a year now. Lastly I changed the oil - no big deal but apparently I have the strength of ten men when it comes to putting on an oil filter - that bastard wouldn't come off until I had to rig up a "rubber, wrench-grip thing". All in all a good day. Haven't really had the time or the opportunity to test out the swaybar but at least the rear end is tight again (LOL!).
Hopefully tomorrow will be a 626 IM swap (again) as well as helping a fellow Mazda forum member tear down his MSP to get ready for a build.

Don't run with your fogs on in city driving. I have had mine on for a little over a year and noticed that they have burn marks. Rock blocker states that they need to have air flowing over them to dissipate the heat.
Called the insurance co. this morning and a glass guy is coming Wed. My daughter noticed a two inch crack on the PS windshield on the way to the bus stop this morning.

I want a new windshield badly!! I don't know what the heck happened to mine. It looks like it's been sandblasted. Tiny little knicks all over the thing. At first i thought it was from when I drove behind a car that drove through some nice fresh spilled paint on the road, but, they won't scrape off. Thinking of throwing a rock at it and getting a new one.

Well, I got around to installing the tranny mount today. (flash)
It was pretty easy actually, except the bolt closest to the firewall is a pita.
You will need to support the transmission with a small jack.
Basically you need to remove the intake, the battery, and battery tray. Then you will have better access to remove the mount. Lining up all the bolts seemed to be a little tricky on my car. We needed to jack the tranny up and down a bit line everything up.
Anyway, we got it all in and fired up the car, and I noticed an immediate increase in vibration. Not in a bad way, though. I also have the awr front mount and passenger side inserts. Funny, it does vibrate more when driving than it does when at idle. It also translates a lot more tranny noise up in the cabin. My friend and I both noticed it. Not a problem for me, but I can see where it may annoy certain people. Although it does vibrate quite a bit, I'd say the rear mount vibrates more than this. My other friends car was insane compared to this...he had passenger side inserts, front and rear mounts. I'm sure it will get worked in and soften up a little as time passes.
Any way here are some pics...

I was tempted to pick one up. I've only got the front by AWR in right now, just put in last week actually, and, at idle, it vibs pretty decently. But, as soon as I am over 1000 RPM, it's smooth as silk.
You notice anything other than the vibes?
And, are you running any other mounts other than stock?
Tylor

It feels pretty good. I have not had a chance to really go out and beat on it yet. But I can tell you if you want to elimiate wheel hop, this will do it. When I hit the gas now, it feels very direct. Meaning, super responsive. Seems the power is going right where it should, the wheels. Car of course, is not any faster, (duh) but really, really responsive.
Vibes at idle are better than when driving. Like I said, the rear mount in my friends car is much worse. I have the AWR front mount and passenger side inserts. You do feel every little thing now. lol From the turn of the starter to when you cut the ignition, you will feel all moving parts doing their thing. hehe
Not sure if any of you have that weird tranny whine, but I do and it is definatly louder than before. I dont care, but others will. After I go on a few more drives, I will report back with my findings. But to be sure, the mount will soften up after use, I'm sure.
So far, I like it a lot!

LOL, interesting day...
Cleaned/detailed the interior and the engine bay today. While detailing the engine bay I noticed my fuel rail was loose - apparently I forgot to torque those down yesterday after the 626 IM install - that accounted for the rough idle and gas smell. Unfortunately I didn't notice this until after I had hosed down the engine bay with Simple Green and water. Well I guess something got in past the loose O-rings because upon start up (after I torqued down the bolts) there was lots of smoke and popping. I let the car idle until warmed up then took it out to make sure everything was okay and that's when all the fun stuff happened. Did a pretty hard pull in 3rd and at about 4500-5000 RPM I hear "BANG BANG BANG BANG" coming from the engine - like someone has taken a jackhammer to the engine block. So I immediately let off the gas but not before the CEL starts flashing - I immediately know that's a misfire CEL. So I go to an Advance Auto to read the code and sure enough, Cylinder 1 Misfire and two pending codes (Bank 1 too Lean - makes sense because of the fuel leak, and an O2 sensor problem which has been reoccuring for me so no big deal). Well, I cleared the codes and drove around a little; got a new tank of gas and did some moderate runs. The car seems better now - still haven't done a WOT run but everything seems better. Just must have gotten some water/Simple Green in the IM. I just hope nothing got damaged in the brief moment of engine knocking.
On another note my swaybar/AWR endlink combo is already popping/creaking. It's loud, but honestly, when compared to the rest of my car I could care less at the moment. If I get bored down the road I'll play with it a little more and see if I can't fix it.
Whew, long post...

LOL yeah, that's exactly what I thought when I was done. It's funny because I was debating whether or not I should detail the engine bay. Good thing I did because I would have never realized the loose fuel rail bolts - that would have been bad. I just hope that little bit of water or cleaner didn't do any serious damage. The car sounds normal again, no knocking at modest boost (< 5 psi) so that's good. For a moment there all I could think about was "Ah, there goes my engine!"
Anyhow, no plans for the P5 today - she's been babied quite a bit over the last three days. I'd love to wash/wax her but it's supposed to rain later today and that'd kind of suck.

Yes, you def. have to remove the whole bumper to remove the whole headlight assembly. You have to pull the bumper as well as two brackets that keep the headlights from falling out when the bumper isn't on(i guess that's thier function. They don't do anything else from what I can tell)
You planning on blacking out the headlights?

Dynamat'ed the inside of the rear quarter panels and rear shock towers. So far I have about 52 sq. ft. of dynamat in my car (rear doors and rear hatch area). That comes out to about 24 lbs. Time for some performance mods to make up for the added weight :icon_lol:

Would a bad o2 sensor cause the car to run rich and the idle to drop to below 500rpm's on occasion? Mechanic said he looked at the EGR and it was clean, but, I told him I'm still gonna clean it.
We can't figure out still why the idle drops and why the engine dies after every time I put gas in it.

And, the O2 you are thinking is the cause of the dropping idle and slight hesitation in 2nd gear?

70 degrees out today and I've already been out since 8 AM working on the car to try to figure out what caused this CEL last night. Re-checked and tighten all intake and exhaust manifold bolts, checked and tighten all intake couples and clamps, check over all vacuum lines and fixed a small (very) vacuum leak, dumped some seafoam in the gas tank and clean both O2 sensor and the MAF. If this doesn't fix the problem then I give up and have no idea what the problem is. I've been told P0171 could also mean a dying O2 sensor, but both of mine were replaced last summer so I hope that's not the case.
On another note I wish I could wash the car today but that'd be kind of pointless as I'm going to be on the road for a 10 hours drive here in about 4 hours.

mx-p5
03-06-2008, 08:43 PM
You got PIAA bulbs? Or PIAA 520's or 40's? If it's just the bulbs, you only need to pull one bolt that is holding the foglight to the frame.
Before doing that, i recomend removing the rain ummm....the black plastic liner under the bumper. Get a flashlight and follow the cable from the foglight up and you'll see where it's mounted to the frame under nieth. You can pull it off that if you want and it'll give you some more wire to work with when reconnecting and disconnecting the foglight.
Once the fog is out, carefully remove the 2 screws on the back of the fog. Don't torque the heads off. I torque'd off one head off each foglight. So, they're each held together right now by 1 screw each. Doh!! When I take em back off again I'll pull the threaded stud out and replace the screw
Sorry I don't have any pics of the bulb install, just the after shots. I will be ordering a set of 55watt yellow bulbs for my wife's car. I'll try to remmeber to do a How To on that. But, honostly , it isn't really that difficult

Long as you don't break any bolts or torque off any screw heads, it shouldn't take more than an hour or so. They'll def. be brighter, but, I think they'll still look slightly yellow in comparison to the HID's. What color temp are you running? I can't remmeber.
I had silverstar Ultra's in my wife's car and, yeah, they were WAY whiter than stock, but, they still looked yellow compared to the 4300K hids.

Drove 315 miles back to Blacksburg without issue (knocks on wood). No CELs, no misfires, nothing; thank God! New IM with modifie throttle cable bracket is working great so far - no sticky throttle. Rear swaybar and endlinks are noisy but work better than stock and nothing is bent/broken yet.
On another note was going to drive the P5 to Cincinnati today (where I am now) but decided not to on account of snow forecast. This was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made as it rained straight for about 3 hours (my car + rain + long distances = bad things) then it switched to freezing rain and ultimately snow. They're calling for upwards of 10 inches of snow in Cincinnati tonight and tomorrow and my P5 with its summer tires would have sucked. Good thing the g/f has a Protege LX with all-seasons! Not the best in snow but a hell of a lot better thann my P5 would have performed.

Just went through a fullservice carwash to get the car cleaned up before going to the Pre-Sebring event at Classic Mazda in Orlando.
Car has a viper alarm that auto locks after the doors shut. Carwash genius left the keys in the car. Had to call the Fire Dept. to come unlock em. They paid the bill to open the car, but, wouldn't comp me the carwash after sitting there 20 minutes waiting on teh Fire Dept. to show
Oh well. I'll be takingpics tonight and posting next week!!

should go get that alarm fixed... the stock alarm did the same thing to me... Locked the freakin keys in the car. I gots a viper alarm to and it doesn't automatically lock the doors with the keys in the car. Yay... If it did i got a spare on the car anyhow... Im sure the viper alarm has an auto lock option that you can turn off. Mine locks only when you start the car and all the doors are closed. If the doors aren't closed whenever the ignition is turned the doors don't lock... Oh and they lock when i arm the alarm.
