I dont remember what i have in there exactly but i believe they are a set of PIAA blue bulbs. i dont think that they are legal due to a flashing "blue" light but they look more white with a blue tint in person.

Trying to buy new bulbs...AGAIN for the drivers side...since I've had this car, I've blown maybe 4 sets of bulbs, including 3 Silverstars...and only on the drivers side...getting sick and tired of all these bulbs blowing(even blew the stock bulb...)

But I'd rather get the volts checked that are running through thse wires cuz either way, the HID's could also blow, less of a chance of course, but still a chance seeing as to how many I have blown on non HID bulbs...

bought new bolts for my adjustable cams. Set both exhaust and intake cams advanced 3 degrees. Seems a little more responsive. Also went to the dyno shop and their prices for three dyno runs is pretty high. $100+tax for three runs. I also asked them how much to tune my cams and they said $300. To me that seems pretty high considering I could just PAU for three dyno runs and adjust the sh1t myself between each run. Hmmm.

Damn Taylor I hope u get a new motor. That would be sick.

yes their are times when I dont wash the door jams. It only needs it in roughly a 1:3 ratio of when i wash the car. Well I take that back the top of the rear hatch jam needs it more often, but they dotn get as dirty as you would think.

This should have been for yesterday but yeah, Installed my Infinity Kappas :) Now they just need the amplifier to bring out the loudness :) that's later today though, bout to leave to get the wood and misc hardware to make the false floor.
btw, the stock tweeter molding SUCKS! only pressure between the grill on the kappa tweeter and the door's interior sheet metal are holding the tweeters in place, at least its a tight squeeze so it works out

The AWR problems people are talking about are due to installation error.
Everybody seems to think the car should be off the ground when installing these. In fact it should be on the ground.
Tony @ AWR and I went through this at his shop.
When installing these end links, you must install them with no binding of any kind. Everything must be relaxed. The bolts must be able to go through the end link, the sway bar/strut with no binding at all. Its kind of hard to explain.
The way I install mine is as follows:
You should do this one side at a time.
Install the end link on the strut first. Tighten this down all the way, leaving the bottom one loose. Line up the bottom bolt of end link and make sure it goes in straight in without any hang ups or binding. It should go in and out smoothly. You may have to loosen the jam nut and adjust accodingly. Once you have determined that everything is good, go ahead and tighten up the lower endlink bolt.

If you tighten all this stuff up while your car is off the ground, the end links will bend, no question.

^^^ Considering that I'm dropped about 2" all around and don't have a lift that will prove to be difficult. I also don't have those drive-on ramp things; only jack stands and a pneumatic jack. I suppose I could always support the rear of the car on the stands and then jack up each tire with the jack to allow for install?

Again, only part of my question was answered. What is the point of the adjustability of these? Is it just to make them fit correctly for different applications or is there a rear difference in handling?

Hmmm... Yah magnum. I installed them while the car was jacked up and rear wheels off. I have not driven the car yet so maybe I should remove them and install them like ogsk8er suggested. Going to have to buy wedge ramps though.

Has anyone else had there AWR endlinks bend after installing them while the car is jacked up?? I dont see how it would make a different since the sway bar just pivots in place after you lower it anyway. If it was really critical to install while the car is on the ground then I would think they would have put that in the directions they sent with the endlinks.

I have a hard time putting my thoughts into words on this one. The is something that you kinda get a feel for. It's not just throw them on and go...this is why people are having noises, wear, and bending. I have no noises, no wear, nothing. Just works.

Also, I hope this will answer your question magnum.
I believe the point of the adjustability, is for the use of many different sway bars. The object is to get whatever bar you are using, as level with the ground as possible. (I hope that make sense.) If you have the end links too short, the bar will fold over itself and bend the links and possibly break the brackets as well. I did this once, and I learned. Conversely, if you extend the end links too long, then it will hyper extend, so to speak. I did this as well.

Guys, I'm telling you the best way is make sure everything is relaxed, and the sway bar level with the ground. I have found this to be the most reliable, and provides the best performance.

Have a look at what I mean by having the sway bar level with the ground:
http://www.msprotege.com/members/o.g.sk8er/AWR%20008.jpg
http://www.msprotege.com/members/o.g.sk8er/AWR%20009.jpg

Yeah, she loves it!! But, she's not sure about her HID kit. I ordered the TechOne 4000K kit, but on fireup it's super blue!! No tint of purple, but very blue!! She feels like she's having a harder time seeing now as opposed to her halogens. I mean, the bulbs are WAY brighter, but the color temp isn't quite right for her. I'm gonna try to pickup a Catz yellow fog and see if adding a really bright yellow will help with the contrast for her.

As to my car, the warranty adjuster didn't showup yesterdy to look at the motor, so, she still sits. And I still roll in a minivan

I think you should check that out, where you ordered them. Sounds like you have different bulb temps. 4000k should be whiteish/VERY bright . How do they look when they have warmed up?

mx-p5
02-12-2008, 09:52 AM
on startup, they're VERY BLUE!! as they've warmed, they still look blue. It almost monotones everything out. It's strange. My 4300Kit looks like the flippin sun is out. Keeps the colors normal. Her kit just washes everything out. It's hard to describe. But, it could also be the 2300K PIAA fogs I've got adding to it on my car keeping things normal. I 'm not sure.

I pm'd Protophile to see if there is a way to check bulb temp. Just waiting to hear back.

So basically I need to adjust my AWR endlinks to the point where the sway bar is level with the ground where ever that may be? So I have not driven my car or moved it at all since I installed my Progress sway bar and AWR endlinks. I installed them with the car jacked up so do you think the AWR endlinks would have bent just by lowering it back down, or does that come after driving it? I will have to check tonight to see if they are bent, I really hope not. I cannot afford to buy another pair! Man AWR should really put this into there install instructions, arent they at falt for the bent endlinks if they dont mention this in the instructions?

yes..try to adjust the bar so it's level with the ground. I really doubt you bent anything by lowering the car on the ground. I found that when things bent it was when I was screaming around a turn and the inside wheel would hit a nasty bump causing them to bend. or going in a driveway too fast at an angle. Try to avoid this. I think you are fine.

I'm interested in seeing these instructions. I have never seen any instruction for the end links. Anyway you can scan it? :p

That's called zero pre-load. If the bar's at any angle, with the ground, it's got load on it. If you're sitting still and it's got load on it, it's pre-loaded. The goal is zero pre-load.

Word(s) for the day - zero pre-load Never knew that...thanks for the edamacasion.

Pulled the cover for the Mazda6 wagon rear wiper off and cut the annoying tab off with an exacto knife. Now I can raise the wiper off the glass without removing the cover. Especially nice on a day like this....when we are supposed to get 1-3 inches of snow and 1/2 inch of ice.

The cover does fit snug but I noticed that the cover now swings freely off the glass as well. Has anyone else who has done this lost the cover while traveling at highway speeds?

Protegegarage is selling the Speedcircuit forged built engine for $3600. Hmmmmm........I am more than willing to pay the $400 difference. Difficulty comes in if the mechanic can get that motor somehow under the warranty company. I'm not looking to have the warranty company cover the motor once it's in. Interesting commute home today. By the time I left work there was about a half inch of snow on the ground. Main roads were no problem, just wet. It was the secondary roads that got me.

First untouched road I turned onto I had traction issues. And this stretch was flat, but she kept drifting to the right. So I would back off the gas and then lightly get back on it. At one point I was spinning tires at 2k. So after cruising two blocks at 5-10mph I came across my next hurdle.

A pretty steep hill with a slight bend at the top which also happens to be a 4-way stop. So I accelerate and back off and accelerate and back off, well about half way up, it didn't matter, I was going to the right again even when backing off. So I put the hazards on and backed down the hill. I knew my chances were slim to begin with but wanted to give it a try.

After sliding to a stop at one more intersection and almost sliding past my street, I made it home.

So Kumho Ecsta AST's = good in dry and wet, not so good in even a little bit of snow with tread wear. Last winter I had no issues with them in a similiar storm but they were new. Upon checking the tread depth when I pulled into the driveway both front tires are 5/32nds across the tire. Tires have just over 20k in 16 months.

Sorry I got long winded, just wanted to share.

Fully understand "should" & "shouldn't". When I did the vtcs removal, whenever that was, the intake manifold had some gold color to it around where the pcv hoses hook into it. There's filmy stuff inside the hose going back from vc to intake. I go thru 1/4 qrt of oil, every 2 weeks which is about 600 miles or so at 75-80mph on frwy. Just recently switched to castrol hi mileage 10-30 from syntech 0-30 german stuff with no difference in consumption. My car doesn't leak, doesn't smoke at startup or at all, pcv is clean & functional. None of the plugs look crazy & the tips are ashy color just like they should be. Compression is all good accross the cylinders. What does that leave?

Yeah, sorry.
Well, I have an '02 Protege5. Its silver, 5-speed (only way to go), black interior. It came with clear taillights, not really a fan, but whatever.

Mods planned... Well, I havent given it much thought yet. Every other car I have ever had, I have modded. So I know I will eventually. I have mostly just been getting the thing into as good of condition as I can. I changed the timing belt with idler and tensioner, water pump, coolant flush, oil flush, new plugs, ect.

Eventually I think I want to go turbo. Seems like a pretty easy job for these cars and lets face it, if you want to go fast, there is no easier way to do it.
In the mean time I want to get a little lower/stiffer ride, better wheels, projector lights... ha, I guess I put more thought into it than I originally thought.

I joined this forum because I used it for a reference when changing my timing belt so I thought I needed to join, learn, and then give back what I can. So here I am.

Hey o.g.sk8er, I tried your advice on making the sway bar parallel to the ground and this is what happened:

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q82/mazdaspeed777/bfd71445e376.jpg
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q82/mazdaspeed777/a1bd393a4622.jpg

So as you can see one of the control arms now blocks the sway bar from even connecting to the endlinks! Gar! This is even with the car lowered all the way to the ground(not jacked up or on stands). So MagnumP5 I would not suggest you do it like this because it does not work. I don't know if the control arms are set up differently on the sedans or what.

So would anyone know the best setting to adjust my AWR endlinks to? I would think if the endlinks would reach the sway bar to have the endlink ends all the way screwed into the center that would be the strongest stiffest setting

o.g.sk8er

wow! I must apologize, as I had no idea that the progress bars ends were that much longer than the RB. I really feel bad about this man. The RB one seems to be ok this way, but yea it is quite obvious this is not true with your progress bar. Well, try to put it back the way it was with the end links relaxed as possible and you should be ok. Again apologies for the confusion.

So the Racing Beat swaybar has shorter ends than the stock bar? I have both my Progress and stock swaybars sitting here in front of me and they are identical sans thickness. So crap, did I make a mistake ordering the AWR endlinks? I'm beginning to wonder now what the ideal setup would be then? I suppose I could always just make the AWR endlinks the same length as the stockers and reinstall. I mean the stocker never bent/broke and they have been through a lot but then again they also weren't attached to a 22 mm thick swaybar! Anyone have a decent picture of the stock swaybar/endlink setup? I only have a single half-assed pic from when I was removing it.

On another note, my car decided to stall out twice today as I was getting ready to shut her down. I'm really trying to remember if I just accidentally dropped the clutch (7 lb flywheel really gets rid of any lurch) or if she really stalled out. Both times she started right back up just fine with good vac readings. I might just be out of my mind. It is Valentine's Day...

Well the Progress bar is the EXACT same design as stock but just a thicker bar (22 mm as opposed to whatever stock is - 16 mm?). You have the Racing Beat bar off the Mazdaspeed Proteges I assume? Didn't those cars also come with shorter rear endlinks? If so, I now know and can see why. Well I guess I'll just have to wait until my endlinks come in and I'll play around with them then. I mean the stocker never bent/broke and they have been through a lot but then again they also weren't attached to a 22 mm thick swaybar! I have had the Progress 22mm rr sway with oem endlinks attached to tokico Illuminas for quite awhile. Have never broke an endlink or tab on strut nor is there any noise whatsoever. Mine is oriented above the lateral link bar. Close but not touchy.

On a fun note, since the freeway was empty at 4:45a.m., busted 120 in the sport auto like it was nothing. 75-80 to 120 took no time, climbed right up on it. Everything felt same as doing 55 except for wind noise. Car was planted, solid, no vibes, even threw it around a bit, felt great. Flame as you will but noone was around so whatever. Not something that happens more than once in a great while. Gotta know the car's limits.

the racing beat sway bar is designed differently, hence its different endlinks. its oriented more down than the stock, and it has about an inch longer endlinks.

I don't know yet. I know AWR has released at least one revision with the endlinks. I won't really know until I install them and see how they work. I'm just going to try to install them with the least amount of stress and binding possible and see how that goes. If they do prove too noisy, I may just try the grommet-fix (thanks Brian MP5T) and if that doesn't help I'll probably just go back to using the stockers.

Just talked to the mechanic. He put the motor back together and is going to pull it and the trans out of the car. He said there is crap all over the place inside the motor. So, he's just gonna pull the whole motor for the warranty guy to come look at. It NEEDS a new motor he said

I asked about upgrades, IE the new forged motor from Protege Garage. He said we'll cross that bridge when we get there. He said it might be easier to get forged pistons and rods over thew hole motor, but, we'll see. He also told me if I wanted to upgrade the clutch, or anything, now's the time. Labor costs are going to be tack'd onto the warranty company. So, i'll be ordering all new motor and tranny mounts, possibly a new clutch, and afew other goodies.

I'll keep ya'll posted.

Now, quick question, if I were to get the speedcircuit motor, I'd get the 9:1 compression pistons. I don't ever plan on boosting more than 14 psi. It does not come with a head. Can I use my stock head? Or will it need some work?

And, the possibility of not getting the speedcircuit motor, would forged rods and pistons be enough for low boost application? What else should I upgrade while the motor is out?

Well, after researching the SpeedCircuit engine, I don't have a month to wait on the motor to be built, so, I'll be upgrading the motor the warranty company wants to get. I'm gonna have the mechanic quote a new short block from Mazda, MSRP'd at $3200. Then order the same motor through Ken at Protege garage and use the difference plus a little money from me for the forged pistons and rods.

Hmm. $1000? I call dibs till Monday. That's when I hear from the mechanic as to what I'll be doing for sure. 8.5:1 is for what kinda boost? I'll be running less than 14psi. Who built the motor and what specs have you got? Thanks again for the offer!

Tylor

to be honest. i don't have specs.

Wagner motorsports built the block for a guy named clintt. I bought it from clintt as he did not even use the motor before he decided to part out due to bills.
Wagner is now closed down. The motor ran great. it was in my car. i just decided on lower compression. Kooldino worked/tuned my car. i need a replacement block, or 200.00 more or so

you can boost high w/ this motor. it'll handle it. just not what i'm gonna throw at it!.

mazdaspeed or o.g. do either of you guys have pics of your AWR endlinks? I just got mine in the mail and even at their shortest adjustment height they are still like 3.5 inches longer than the stockers. I want to make sure I got sent the correct part and not the front endlinks by accident.

Here is a pic of my front endlinks I have yet to install do to some stubbern stock endlinks. So if they look anything like these they are front endlinks:

And here is a pic of the rear endlinks, they are much shortere than the front endlinks. About half as long:

Well fuck, another screwed up order from PG - that's the second order of mine they've screwed up in less than one year! Yeah, it looks like they sent me the fronts - mine have the same black tube housing and everything. Well looks like I need to get ahold of Ken again...

Dang, sucky! Do you have aftermarket front endlinks already? If not you should just keep them and order some rear ones. I bet Ken would give you a discount on the rear ones for your trouble.
