B&M is really nice, though I recently discovered the heat-stiffness problem. Apparently TWM doesn't do that. I had a Kartboy on my LX. Also nice, shorter, less precise-feeling than the B&M. No longer in production, though, so you'll have to find one used.
Was the last one autotragic? Good switch if so! :D
Actually there are a few kartboy's left here (http://www.apexr1.com/kashbuset.html) and supposedly Corksport makes an SS that is the same design as the kartboy (possibly bought the design, but nothing is confirmed). I just picked up the kartboy SS and bushings from apexr1 earlier today. Should be delivered by Friday! Then I'll get to (drive2) next week!

So does the Short shifter is it a big deal? I had a miata they come with short shifter stock?
Foolish
10-04-2007, 11:19 PM
The stock shifter in the Miata is one of the greatest ever sold in a car. After owning a Miata for 4 years, I find anything else very disappointing. A short-shifter (I have the B&M in our P5, and had the KartBoy in my LX) is a large step in the right direction. The Protege can shift nearly as nicely as the Miata did! I consider it the most important mod you can add to a Protege, and by far the best bang for the buck, as you'll use the shifter more than almost anything else you'd add.

thing is that in the miata, the shifter is in exactly where your hand needs it to be. No reaching, no shifting your body around. It's just there, right where your hand expects it to be.

10-05-2007, 08:33 AM
I've actually driven a Miata with a short shifter and it sucked! It was too short. The (fairly short) distance you'd usually shift from 1st to N, was now the distance from 1st to 2nd! It was really hard to stop in the middle, because there was essentially no middle!
It went from joystick to light switch! I don't want to shift my car with a light switch! :D

Magnum - pics are looking good!! A perfect example that C-red is the Best color. hehe
This morning I took her in to Firestone for an alignment. Second time I have gone since purchasing the lifetime alignment last year, so from this day forward, all alignments are free!
Of course they tried selling me some 'recommended services'. One of which was spark plugs - 4 @ $5.99 and $51 for labor = $74.96! (wow)
Ok, now I have a question concerning the results of the alingment.
Rear, Total Toe: Actual - 0.00 Before -0.02 Specified Range - 0.20 0.60
Rear, Left Toe: Actual - 0.22 Before - 0.21 Specified Range - 0.10 0.30
Rear, Right Toe: Actual - 0.21 Before - 0.23 Specified Range - 0.10 0.30
The guy at the counter explained it this way
"The tech had some trouble getting the right rear toe in. Everytime he did, it knocked the left rear toe out. After a few adjustments he got the total rear toe in and that is what counts. As long as the total is in spec then you have no worries of uneven wear on the right rear tire."
Is this a true statement or do I need to be worried and make another trip to their facility?
Sorry so long......

only to find out the top plate wasnt low enough on the tokico, and it clanged and rattled and stressed me out for a a day. it didnt make it any better that the nut was stuck and turned the shock itself.
thankfully yesterday i got everything back to stock. no more noise it rides just fine now. ill have to use a washer to fill the threads where theyre stripped the next time i attempt to put it on.

- msp racing harts, 03.5 with/without falken fk451 tires - i estimate about 30% tread left on the tires; these are heavy bastards so shipping will be a little pricey. one rim has very, very slight curb rash. price dependent on shipping and whether or not tires are included; make me an offer.
- p5 nose mask - basically brand new condition. i've never used it, and the guy i bought it from i think used it maybe a couple times. it is missing one or two of the clips, but they're like $2 from the dealer. i'd like $50 shipped.
- custom p5 car cover - brand new condition, i only used it this past winter when parking my car in the backyard. it is a 4-layer cover; if it can stand up to the canadian winters, it can stand up to anything. i paid $250 for it, i'd like $200 shipped.
- NRG hood props - like new condition; $75 shipped
- custom fiberglass sub box by mryellermp5 - fits the hatch pocket on the driver's side perfectly, covered in black carpeting; looks OEM. fits 10" sub; i'd like $150 shipped
- genuine DaveB gauge rings, brushed finish - the real deal, brand new condition; make an offer.
- obx header - in great shape, includes the non-fouler; i'd like $150 shipped.
- gujustud custom chrome oil cap - SOLD
- gujustud custom stock battery tie-down, anodized blue - i'd like $30 shipped
- shaundarbie leather shift boot with silver stitching - SOLD

Laid the basis for my AFC install - ripped out the passenger flooring and glovebox trim, removed the ECU shield and taped off wires needed for tapping, and custom mounted the AFC unit in the glovebox and routed the wires and hose out the back. All is set for splicing and soldering - hope to have it done next weekend (no time to work on it during the week) and when all is said and done there will be no evidence of it whatsoever. My nology wires are the same as Chris's. For the N/A protege wires come with a coil relocation bracket. You have to split the factory wire loom and fish out the coil wires and then make a new wire loom to run around the front of the motor.

What he said. Splitting that loom is not fun, but the install is fairly easy and I can tell a difference in throttle response and I swear it feels a little more peppy.

As for the nology wires. Its simply for looks for me. I REALY REALY couldn't stand the look of those stock puny wires. There is some performance gains but that was just an added benifit for me.

I removed the side mouldings the other day. Got all the adhesive off by using 3M adhesive cleaner, and an eraser wheel on my drill. I got all of the drivers side done, then almost all of the passenger side when I slipped with the wheel and wore three little spots through the paint. I wasn't too happy. BUT, my sister's fiance and his dad have a body shop. He said just get him the paint and he'll paint anything I want. He currently has my DG lip that needs reshot.
Oh, I also noticed that the drivers side rear door has been repainted because under the moulding doesn't match one bit, and there are visible masking lines now.

Passed 90,000 km today. Also put the snow tires on. No, it isn't snowing up here yet, but I am going overseas for a couple of months on monday and figured that it would be easier to put them on now when it is still fairly nice out rather than wait till I get home and have to do it when it is actually snowing, or raining, or just plain cold. And wow, snow tires on bare pavement are really loud, I had forgotten that point.

I did the same! You should have drove up to the NEPOC meet...it was another great time!
Yup....another road trip to visit the NEPOC crew for a wash and wax meet. While I was at it, the car rolled over 94k, changed the battery (it was nasty), flushed the coolant, installed new spark plugs and coil packs - with Bruce's help!
Also noticed a squeaking noise coming from the passenger side on the way home...will have to investigate more tomorrow.

Finally, and I mean finally, completed the instal of my AFC today. Well, the wires are still exposed and the ECU is out in the open but that's because I didn't want to put everything back together just to find out something isn't working. Well she started up the first time, but later on when she was fully warmed up I was running into some idling issues - no vac leaks or anything - just irratic idle. It seemed to clear itself up later on and seems to be running okay for now. I currently have it so the car's stock tune is running. The tuning process will commence later - I love the wideband input on the V2!

Flushing the coolant was very easy.
**I am at stock height so I was able to do this without jacking the car up**
1) Loosen the rad cap
2) Pull the 'trap door' down that is underneath the radiator
3) Use a phillips screwdriver to loosen the black screw (you might have a white one that resembles a wing nut) and make sure you have a container ready to catch the coolant. I bought a 10qt one at Autozone.
4) When it is done draining, remove the hose that connects the resorvoir bottle to the radiator and pinch. Then hold it over the catch can and let the bottle empty.
5) Replace the screw in the bottom of the rad and fill the radiator with a hose
6) Next let the engine run until you get to operating temp
7) Repeat steps 3, 5 and 6 one more time
8) Replace the screw in the bottom of the rad and fill with coolant...finish by filling the resorvoir bottle to the fill line.
9) I used Prestone coolant that was prediluted so no mixing was necessary.

Yeah that was my thought but I always thought it took like 300 miles for it to clear up. Must have just been a hiccup or something - I guess I'll find out when I take her out today to start road tuning. I need to put her back together first.
Oh yeah, Friday night I went to an 1/8th mile track - the first time I've ever been to a drag strip. My best time was 10.0445 but I know she can go mid-to-high 9's - I just need to learn how to launch better. I don't think it was too bad for my first time...
Got a hole in my right rear azenis. I was going to patch it up, but it had very little thread left (would have been great in the dry with slicks =P). The tire shop guy offered to give me a used set of tires for the price of mount and balance. He was going to give me stock a evo advan, but they are 10mm wider than my other tires, so he gave me a toyo t1r... now i have 3 azenis and a t1r lol.

Played around with tuning for a little. I ended up driving around but noticed that the P5 was going into open loop at very small loads (read going to 10:1 and lower when driving regularly). Well, I made a quick pit stop and removed that map and went back to stock until I could get back to my apartment and see what's up. Apparently the map I downloaded has the AFC forcing open loop at like 18 mm Hg! Well I fixed that but by the time I figured it out it was getting dark and I'm running low on gas anyway. I need to hurry this up so I can be ready for the dyno day in two weeks!

This is just a temporary fix but if it is a hole in your pipe get a soda can and cut both ends off then cut it so you can wrap it around the hole and get a couple of hose clamps that are big enough to hold it in place and that will hold you over till you can save up some money to get it fixed by someone more qualified.

Holy shit so as I was nearing my place yesterday I noticed the brakes felt mushy. I checked the fluid and it was ok. Today I drive down the block heading to work and the brake pedal still felt like junk. Something definitely felt off. I immediately looped around the block, parked the car and stole my mom's to get to work.
I get home just a little bit ago and put the P5 in the garage, figuring a seized caliper or something. I give it a quick visual inspection and noticed something wrong with the front driver's wheel...

IIRC this is the nut you take off to get to the wheel bearing. Basically his entire wheel assembly (lug nuts and all) was about to fall off.
Timing is everything.

The entire right rear wheel + hub + brake drum (I suppose) detached itself from my mom's 323 while I was driving it once back in High School! I'm guessing it was a similar axle nut situation.
I made a right hand turn and heard/felt a thunk in the back of the car, so I pulled over to the right to take a look. The wheel looked not quite right so I jacked the car up, at which point the entire wheel (including it's lugnuts, still in place) fell off!
Good thing I pulled over and didn't drive the additional block to where I'd have made a left, and probably lost the wheel into oncoming traffic!

I've lost a few wheels in my life...
-One day My Mom lost a wheel (loose lugnuts) on the way back from school, we couldn't get a hold of my Father because he had lost a wheel (Hub came off) on the same gravel road 7 miles away...
6 years later..
-On my way to get Milk in my '87 Monte Carlo my rear wheel (loose lug nuts) came off as I came off of a bridge. The wheel crossed the 4 lane highway twice completely missing all traffic and stopping 150 yards down the way. It only caused about $1800 to my car, no damage on anything else.
Not me, about the same time as my Monte Carlo...
-On the way to High School, I had a buddy lose a wheel and have it roll down the highway, around a corner and into the Tire Shop that forgot to tighten his lug nuts in the first place. Actually it was the same tire place that didn't tighten my lugs, no wonder it went outta business.
I'm not counting wheels on Horse trailers, or Blowouts. And like I said, Timing is everything.

A friend of mine had his mountain bike on his Yakima roof rack on the D.C. Beltway once. He was in the left lane, doing 60-70-ish, when the front wheel of the bike flew out of the wheel holder. He pulled over 5 lanes to the right shoulder to look around and see what happened to his wheel, and see if it caused any carnage.
He hit the hazard lights, got out and walked to the back of the car in time to see the wheel roll up the shoulder and hit the back bumper of his car, then fall at his feet, undamaged!
Best guess is it slip-streamed in behind the car as he changed lanes, otherwise I have no idea how that could have happened.
