my poor Protege5. Yesterday I got 1 strut installed but then I had to battle a migraine on top of the 102 fever and sore throat that I had all afternoon.
I'm feeling quite a bit better now so it's time to get more struts installed :) :)
My goldline springs look really gross though, so much of the yellow coating on them got rubbed off on the upper (closer together) coils. I bet those coils hit each other when my car is loaded full of stuff.
*sigh* my car is a rainbow of colors now.. blue struts, yellow springs, red sway bar. I'll take a pic if I get bored down there.

Now, I'm stuck trying to find two stainless steel bolts/screws to attach the rear license plate. The ones I got from my local hardware store stop with 1/8" to go. :(

Is the 03 MSP tip round or oval?
03's round. The guy I got the RB from had the oval tip, but a member here in GA had the axleback portion of his 03MPS layin around (when he got his exhaust done, they had to cannibalize 1 of the hangars from it to put on his new setup) and just gave it to me, so I used the tip from that.

thats not that good......back road driving, how fast? are your snow tires smaller than stock which will make your milage seem lower than it actually is?
-R
Rosshole
03-17-2006, 05:05 PM
I drive fast, all of the time, so that doesn't help either, but the big old meaty snowtires definately do not assist in fuel economy , plus the ski rack acts like a sail going down the highway.

Actually, tires larger than stock will yield worse mileage if you work off the odometer...
Rosshole
03-17-2006, 05:40 PM
the snows are 205/60?/15's or something...
but i think that it is the tread that was hurting the mileage because the OD stayed the same (or very close to the same)

so, I they shook something loose when they were cutting the pipe, so I had an exhaust leak and rattle @ the axleback "juncture." I hate mineke so much, if only they weren't so damn convinient. Anyway, harbor freight roxxorz my soxxors. I had to go get a deep well socket set, and some threadlock so I could fix the problem.
The exhaust should be sorted now, but I dunno why the studs are missing so many threads on the top half (on the flange side, not the "open" side). I just slapped some blue threadlock on there, stacked up some washers and tightened it down, so threads or not it should be in good shape lol. I haven't touched it since I bolted everything up to give the threadlock time to...er...lock, so we'll see how it goes.

It's rated for 3 Tonns
Its Lowest is 4"
Its Highest is 22"
It's four pumps to get the P5 to 20"
The ass was so high that the front started to touch the ground.
BTW: When it was up there, I used a degreaser and cleaned the entire rear suspension, wells, and 21mm with links. Cleaned the inside of the rims, removed and reset the rear pads and then Lubed the endlinks.

I haven't driven my P5 today but I will later tonight. I'm excited because my protegegarage.com order came in, so now I'm applying primer to the 323 and "mazda" badge before I paint them and I'm going to go down into the garage and put my rear endlinks on. Sucks that I had to break off both front endlinks though :( , so now I'll still be stuck with one sway bar.
I gotta work on rubbing the adhesive off the rear of my car around the emblems so that it looks nice and clean when I pop the new ones in.
Does anyone from doing lowering springs or struts remember when you tightened the 17mm nut on top of the rear struts? I think I had already taken the spring compressors off when I did it and I can't tighten either of them any more without the big washer thing and the inner shaft of the strut spinning with the nut. When I did the front ones I did the tightening with the spring compressors still on so it worked a lot better. Driving around a little last night I definitely heard some rattles coming from the back but it could easily have been all the trunk trim and the rear seatbely brackets and such. I'll tighten everything up while I'm down there and try again.

Today I drove her a few times back and forth looking for a pharmacy open after 3pm on a Sunday.. bah. I finally did find one though. my left rear strut is rattling a little bit. I can't get the nut on top any tighter but the washer rattles around. I think I'll either try putting the washer upside down or adding a couple washers to it.
The people at the hospital didn't exactly tell me what was wrong, just that my left ear was more inflamed than she had seen in years. They gave me a prescription for Ammoxicillin and told me to use a warm salt water rinse 3 times a day to reduce the glandular swelling in my throat. Basically the tubes that connect from the throat to the ears that allow it to stay at the correct pressure (opened when you swallow or yawn or chew gum) are blocked which was causing the inflammation of my eardrums. Right now I have just regained some hearing in my left ear, but it isn't much. I would say I'm at 3/10 for my left ear and 7/10 for my right ear. The doctor asked me something about whether I had had strep throat before but didn't do a throat culture so I guess she didn't suspect that. I haven't had any sort of ear infection since I was like 6, I thought they were supposed to stop as you grew up :(
Right about now I can barely keep track of all the pills I'm taking. sudafed 24-hour for congestion, advil flu every 6 hours for pain/inflammation relief, Mucinex as a cough suppressant and expectorant (thinner of flegm), and that is all on top of my normal meds and now the 3x a day Amoxicillin.
I just hope this goes away soon I want to install my rear sway bar endlinks and new emblems, and more importantly I need to get my homework done and I absolutely cannot miss a single day of class (damn quarter system).
Everything is under control though, nothing to see here.

I was feeling courageos and nicely medicated so I went down into the garage and installed my rear endlinks. hooray for having the RB sway bar on there for a week with no endlinks connecting it, and now it is connected to the Tokico HPs I installed this weekend (in pain of course).

Hopefully my hearing will be back by then. At least I can't hear the washers on my rear struts rattling for now :)

Had a small dent pushed out of my roofline this morning. The PDR guy did a great job given the fact that the dent had somewhat of a crease in it. It's not 100% perfect, but it looks FAR better than it did before. I'll probably be the only one who can notice it now. Best of all, he only charged me $65.
Dent pic below. No pic yet of the dent removed.

ow that looks like a tough dent to fix, how did he manage to fix it?He drilled a small hole on the under-side of the roofline, just below the dent. He prepped the paint with some rubbing compound, heated the paint slightly and used a tool to slowly work the dent out. It took him about 20 minutes once he got started. It still needs a tiny dab of touch up paint.

I ended up ordering it from www.carshopinc.com (http://www.carshopinc.com)
But, I know that some of the Saturn dealerships are "Saturn Motorsports" dealerships and I have heard that some of them stock it. My local dealer didn't so I just ordered it. I don't know of any store that actually carries it. Autozone, Advanced auto parts, etc. around me don't have it. Didn't look at like NAPA, they might carry it. Might just have to call around and see. It looks cool though, I really like it. I know VHT makes it in red and black, not sure of any other colors.

Tonight I'm going to have some nice 1-on-1 time with my Protege5. I bought some Mobil1 gear oil (might as well give it a try, I'm running with the redline MT90 right now and didn't notice anything changing from my stock gear oil at 50k miles to the redline stuff), some flat black spraypaint, and some other little items.
I'm going to finally attach the CF piece above my glovebox, I searched long and hard and got my hands on some of the proper 3m adhesive for the job.
Other than that little bit the rest of my work will be under the hood. I'm finally refinishing my cold air intake; right now it is "brushed aluminum" style because I sanded it down but never painted it. I am painting something else under the hood but I'm not telling what it is until I finish (if I even do it tonight).
Oh and the Duplicolor wrinkle coat paint is available at Advance Auto Parts (and via www.partsamerica.com) but it isn't high heat as far as I can tell.
One very interesting thing that I saw was something new from Duplicolor. Spray on Temporary Car Bra!
It comes in a clear color and some other color and it says it gives you the protection of a bra but washes off with just soap and water. I'm a bit skeptical about taking a rattle can of any kind to the exterior of my car but if it really works I'll buy a dozen cans!

Kansei
03-26-2006, 03:46 AM
Yeah it isn't that bad, this marks the third time my headlights have been in the oven. This time I just needed to get some glass shards out :P
ok last pic for the night. I'm not done, but I'm pretty close. My rear calipers are still red though because I can't have both ends jacked up at the same time. Also, my exhaust header is not in the vehicle so although it looks completely normal right now, it definitely wouldn't run (no oxygen sensors plugged in). I'm going to do a shoddy job of putting the header back on tomorrow morning because the spring bolts that connect it to the stock exhaust manifold suck. I broke the welds on both of them so the studs are still attached to the midpipe. It just needs to be able to get me through the week until my MAM midpipe comes in without sounding like ass.
:)
So tonight I did the following:
1. made my brushed aluminum cold air intake into a flat black cold air intake.
2. Touched up a few little things under the hood with the flat black paint - specifically the top brackets for the radiator and the bracket for the coolant overflow bottle. They were looking really gross.
3. Coated my header. The paint specifically says "suitable for exhaust headers" and "1200F" so it should last. If only I had washed the header down before I first started the car up after installing it, it was all unevenly bronzed and gross looking.
4. Attempted to change my gear oil before remembering that I don't have a 23mm socket in my Craftsman set.
5. took off my front bumper and headlights and baked them to get the glass shards out of one headlight.
6. attached the carbon fiber trim piece above my glovebox since I finally found the proper 3m adhesive strips.
7. painted my front calipers silver (just the front ones tonight though). It took 5 coats to get them looking as they are in the picture. Maybe if I had sanded down the red a little it would have been easier. The paint was very runny so it took three coats to get them to look more silver than red. I don't know if I like how it looks though, it looks very empty now. Maybe I should have just gone with black after all. It's not like I have a BBK or anything.

New Toy From Canadian Tire.
Although I feel that Jobmate is like the bottom end of the world of tools, the price is simplu impossible to pass up.
With moving to a new house, the idea of a 2 Wide 2 Deep garage opens the idea of making an actual workshop more possible.
This week, this was only $149.00 Complete, I got the only one available. I finally have an impact. It should save so much time in rebuilding the 944.

Well I should have known it wouldn't last. The "Withstands 1200F" "suitable for exhaust headers" paint I applied like 6 coats of last night is almost completely gone already.
That was so many hours of work for nothing. At least I got quite a few other things touched up. Eventually I'll either have to polish the header so that it can bronze evenly or get it powdercoated or something. I even let it cure overnight. 5 minutes of driving to the store and back and it was already bubbling, and then driving to campus to study at the library and I get back and big chunks of it are missing and a lot of the rest is flaking off.
argh. damn you duplicolor.
I wanted to paint my rear calipers today but didn't get a chance to because I've spent 7 hard-working hours today on homework so far and I'm still not going to be done for a while.
At least I have my hopes up for my MAM midpipe coming before the weekend so I can finally get rid of those atrocious spring-loaded bolts on my exhaust system.

Now all you need is the CF piece above the glovebox. I love the pieces that cover the faux CF, I won them in a giveaway on these forums so I just had to pay shipping :)
They are just such a nice subtle mod that makes the interior look higher quality. Now I just need to get the gauge surround but it sucks because I'll have to relocate the LED for my OEM alarm (I drilled it in the position recommended in the installation guide, right in the center of the gauge surround) off of the gauge surround and maybe onto the steering column or upper dash near the VIN plate.
I can't wait to see all these fresh mods everyone is installing at the next NEPOC meet. Damn having to put a thousand miles on my car to drive home for a weekend and then drive up to MA for a meet. I really didn't want to drive home until the end of the semester but with the meet in April and my sister's graduation it looks like I'll be getting to the "high mileage" range sooner rather than later.

I received a couple items today. First is my prized engine block heater. I can't freakin wait to plug my car in at night :) even though it's in a garage. I think I'll put it on a timer so that the heater just turns on a couple hours before I have to leave in the morning or something.
Second is another set of Luminics Ultra White bulbs. One of my previous ones shattered all over the place, hence me re-baking my headlights a few days ago. The bulbs are on national backorder but I managed to get my hands on a set through my asian correspondent in CT :P
pardon the terrible image quality, it's from my Nokia 7610 :P

I took some pics. Sadly I was just taking some quick shots so I didn't notice that I was using a really high ISO on the outdoor shots. Damn noisy photos.
first is the front calipers that I did silver. I still have to do the rears though, it looks really dumb because they're still red :P
http://www.msprotege.com/members/zverg/mods/zverg_calipers.jpg
Then just a couple shots showing off the black 323 emblem. I used touchup paint on the connectors between the numbers but only one coat so it doesn't look that great.

Yup. I had the sport20, then went back to the Protege5 badge for a little while, then back to the sport20, then to the protege5 badge blacked out, and then to the 323 badge. I didn't really like the 323 badge at first but it's definitely growing on me.

Kansei
03-30-2006, 11:34 PM
It actually is still red in my avatar, it's just a bit too washed out to see. The morning sun was blazing over the mountain when I took the pics (both of them, sig and avatar, were taken at the same time).
But yeah, I still don't know how I feel about the silver front calipers. That's why I haven't gotten to the rears yet. I really think I might go back to red on the front. Some call it ricey but I just really like the way it looks, is there something so wrong about that? :P
Maybe I can find a red that isn't so bright or something.
oh wait. You're talking about that little .gif that I made for my old avatar. That was my point for making it really, because it was simple and easily recognizable. Even though the names are there, I get thrown off by everyone who uses the same avatar pics.
I plan on making something new, just thought I would toss something up until then.

Yeah I sorta want to change my forum username (again, I was Myndfi3ld back in 2004). "zverg" is just a modified version of "zwerg", German for midget or dwarf.
No, I'm not a dwarf, but I was really short when I got the nickname like in 9 or 10th grade in high school (sophomore in college now). It doesn't really fit anymore, I'm like 5'9" / 5'10". I just haven't thought of a good username to change it to. I've been thinking about it for at least a year now haha.

What is the weather like there now? It's supposed to be 74 here tomorrow, which is crazy for this area at this time of the year.

I hate it too - more and more each year. Though I will say, you do have to have snow at Christmas; it's just not the same without it. But otherwise, no thanks! Basically, 99% of the snow that's fallen this winter has been since the beginning of March.
It's been just above freezing all week, and is expected to stay that way for a little while yet (hopefully it just gets warmer and warmer). Therefore, due to all the melting snow, Morrigan is in a perpetual state of 'dirty', and will be for a while yet. :(
Oh yeah, another 'mod' from Saturday: huge friggin rock chip in the hood thanks to the truck in front of me riding the line and kicking up all the sand and gravel. Through the clear, paint and into the primer; I don't think it's down to metal, but I'm not sure. Pisses me off even more because the hood just got fixed and repainted last summer. (pissed) Time to break out the bottle of touch up paint... again.

Not yet, I did it last night and am working now. The shift plate won't stay on properly, even with copius amounts of double sided tape. It also has a couple minor cracks. Both pieces look very cloudy, and the radio surround just looks overall cheap to me. I think I'm going to cut the ends off, where our fake cf is now and just cover those. How does one go about cutting cf anyway, what's the best tool for the job? The shift plate is gonna go too, I think. I'll order it new one day. No more used carbon fiber for me.(pissed)
