Ring failure. :( So sad, but fixed now.

Picture is of the ring falling off. Drove like that for about a month, as it was summer semester and I had no time!

Re-installed, it looks like every other P5 gauge cluster with sexy DaveB rings, so I didn't take another picture! :)

I'm pretty sure the turbo has shit a brick - smoke like crazy under boost and I've gone through more than a qt of oil in less than 700 miles. I suppose it could also be a piston ring, but I do not have blow by or any of the other symptoms. I will be doing a compression test tomorrow though... shit sucks.

I always thought your car would be really stable with a relatively moderate turbo setup (one that should have come stock on the car (shrug) ) and seemed really clean and reliable. Guess not. Maybe due to lack of engine management?

I'm just beginning to think I bought a bogus turbo - I don't really know what the person before me did to it. From what I can tell, I've been burning oil for a while now and just recently whatever was wrong got significantly worse. Nothing is leaking - just lots of blue/black smoke under boost...

DeadGeneration
08-09-2007, 11:23 PM
You're still getting boost though, which I am guessing still seems normal? Seems like it's just not burning the fuel all the way then? like aka extremely rich?

The AFR's seem normal - nothing overly rich. I can still get into boost, but I get so much smoke coming out the back it makes me wonder how much oil I'm burning. It also doesn't smell like unburnt gas at all. I mean, my oil has to be going somewhere and if it's not leaking onto the ground... I'm going to make some calls around tomorrow and see if I can get a better idea of what's going on.

Since I put in my new turbo last week I haven't used a drop of oil. I've been going through about 1/2 quart every 1000miles.

Did you test with a tsp of oil in there too to check rings? I just did mine and they were like 195 and 210 with oil in the cylinder.

WTF?! I called them and the guy on the phone sounded like he didn't know what a compression test was. Well I was told I should also get a leak-down test done, but after being told twice that with compression numbers like the ones I got, and with zero blow by in the engine, a leak-down would only be a waste of money. Well, time to call up Nick at MPi and give the nod. I'm getting the upgrade/rebuild!

Yeah the entire time I was working yesterday that's all I could think of. Unfortunately, unlike everyone else I think the Thunder manifold is just hideous. " Hunter "

In June I took out my lower grill, paint on the bumper, windspliter & air dam under the car while hitting a large Jack rabbit on Hwy 60.

Saturday night on the way home from Lake Havasu City I dodged a porquapine at 70 mph. ran over a already dead deer and hit a skunk dead on.

Not today (catching up for not updating for a while):
In no particular order

Un-parked my car and swapped off studded tires (bought 26 gallon Air Compressor and 4 ton, 4" to 20" jack, both Craftsman)

Built a workbench/tire rack

Removed brakes to turn rotors (bought SAE and Metric wrench set)

Painted Calipers ($20 brush on kit)

New K&N air filter

reworked my intake from CAI to SRI (drilled out the temp gauge hole) and cut myself on the plumbers tape I used to secure it.

Installed Optima red top

Installed new plugs, drove for a while, (engine still running poorly intermittently) Swapped wires and coil packs, (engine still running poorly intermittently), swapped plugs again. From Denso to NGK to match my wires.

I think I finally have enough tools to do most of the work on my car effectively. I'm seriously considering a CEL reader for $199 on sale till the end of Aug. Thoughts?

Sorry no tranny cooler . I have a vented carbon fiber hood that helps release the heat. and the header was new when I had it coated I do not know how much heat they do produce without coating but I didnt want to put it on and then take it off to get it coated then put it back on. as far as VE sticker and fluid discharge line circle it on the pic I dont know what your talking about allthouh a tranny cooler does sound nice I have other things on my list b4 that.

Got the call that the turbo didn't have a major oil leak (there was a small one but not enough to cause such oil consumption). I am really confused with all this. A compression test yielded 200 psi across all four cylinders, I have no oil blow by through my breather filter and there was no oil on any of the spark plugs. Is it possible one (or more) of my piston rings are bad even with all that?!

You can either buy a can of VHT brand NiteShades paint...like 10-12 bucks, for enough to do the sides and tails (if you wanted). Or you can go to a hobby shop and buy some testor's "Smoke" paint. you'd have to shoot it through an airbrush though. Third option would be to have a body shop mix you up some tinting paint (basically thinned out black) I did a how-to on it last year...

2nd what Demoniam said....

Call a local tire shop in your area for the nite shades....cost me $10 and tax for my can. I have found it on ebay but after you pay for shipping it is close to $20.

better than my slotege5. But mostly because I've never launched, also because K&N filters don't increase track time much.

Today my wife was checking out KBB for the trade-in value on my car, and pricing out the Speed3. It would be sooooo freeking cool to get a 08 MS3, I'm teetering on the edge right now, the only thing holding me back is that I am so close to not having any car payments... It would be nice not to have to fork ove $362 on my car every month.

It would be sooooo freeking cool to get a 08 MS3, I'm teetering on the edge right now, the only thing holding me back is that I am so close to not having any car payments... It would be nice not to have to fork ove $362 on my car every month.

Seriously though, if I fail to resist the test drive it'll be all over. She is trying to set that up too. Dammit! Women are such a tool of the devil! The (wo)Man+Vagina Power is holding me down. (gtfo)

lol yea see my thing about fast cars is that if you are gunna have a fast car then you better have the fastest. I mean like these guys running 7 second pro cars last night. Sure that's fast as hell... but a funny car can do it in 4 seconds http://nhra.com/stats/natrecord.html . Same with these cars that are floating around 12, 13, 14, 15 seconds... why spend money trying to make it faster when I can go buy a used beat up car for $2,000 that runs 13s as is with plenty of potential. That's why I am not trying to make my car faster or look for the next newest faster car to buy. I just want to hit 15's as a driver goal. If I can do it, then when I get my 2nd non-street legal car I will at least be a decent driver. Some of these guys running cars last night like brand new mustangs have fast cars but I am not sure they would have beat my time last night if they were driving mine. Or if they would have beat me if I just sat down and drove their car. But yea, it seems like everyone has goals but in the back of my mind I am not sure many people take into account the purpose of their goals.

MSP springs will cause you to sag...meaning the front will sit higher than the rear.....MSP springs are gay on a P5 anyway....they only drop the car about
.75"

not even really a noticeable drop IMO....get some eibach or tein springs if you want a drop....

or get coilovers...but thats a whole different price range.....

why you gotta hate? And how is that sag? The drop's actually even, there's just less fender around the rear, hence the LOOK of an uneven drop (same reason we can't run as much offset in the rear as the sedans can).

So...in conclusion: You're gay. :p

I take it you don't engage your brake fully then... becuase I literally would drag my rear wheels if I were to go some where. I know this becuase my girl did that to my car and put flat spots on my rear tires!!! Later on I she relased the break a little but not fully and went though pads and rotors! lol

why would you need new struts?

i have tein S-tech springs on stock struts and i have had no problems with them....i have had them on for over 40,000 miles with no issues at all....

so not sure where you got the idea you need new struts if you get tein springs.

you can probably get a set of new Tein S-tech or H-techs for $100 if you go to the right place....you know of the place i speak of......(burnout)

I agree with both of you. When Bill lowered our P-5 with eibachs at 20 thousand miles, He was told that we would need new struts very soon. We now have almost 128 thousand miles and still running stock struts.

I guess the stock struts are better than most people thought.

Oil filter and change. First time I have done this on any of my cars. Why I never did in the past, I will never know. Took me about 30 minutes but that inlcudes a trip to Autozone to get a new drain plug. Reason was the last shop to do it, lost/never replaced the crush washer.

Then took a drive with the fam to Martin's Creek to watch my bro-in-law and his Blue Mountain Baseball team repeat as Champs!!!!

After dinner she gets a well deserved bath.

Didn't wash her like I planned too. I went to the garage and realized I ran out of soap the last time I washed the cars...DOH!

I did put some new bolts on my heat shield though. Sanded and painted them earlier in the day. Some of the paint did come off when I tightened them down so I will use a small brush to touch them up. Beats having the rusty ones on there.
