damn CEL came on again today just as we were pulling back into town after visiting friends in Winnipeg for the day. don't have time to get the code pulled tomorrow before heading across the border, so hopefully it's the second O2 sensor not liking the rusty non-fouler... i just hope it doesn't affect my mileage too much on the highway :(

guess once i'm in Wichita i pick up a new non-fouler and/or get myself a new O2 sensor (shrug) that would really suck

Did Seafoam and oil change yesterday.

Last night my cruise control stopped working. I hit the main cruise button and I can hear a relay clicking in the passenger side foot well, but nothing works. Is it something small I can take care of or should I take it to the dealership since I have an extended warranty?

I removed my cruise controle and thats what it sounds like when I try and engage my cruise control. So check the cable connected to the CC to make sure it is still connected(pull back the rubber boot connected to the drum), and check to see that you sensors connected around the CC are still plugged in

Yesterday I messed with my intake, making it more of a "slightly cooler air intake" than the previous "FREAKIN' OVEN AIR INTAKE"

I also attempted to fix my rattling hi-flo cat heatshield with some JB Weld, hopefully it worked. Unfortunately I didn't fix my furby noise, I think it is my brake pads being uber low. So I ordered some Porterfield pads.

I've been meaning to ask you what type of IC setup you have. I really like the placement of you IC. Also, does your piping come up through that hole on the driver's side (same hole N/A CAI's usually go through)? Right now I'm certain my intake is sucking in a lot of what you call "oven air" and I'm trying to figure out something to do with it.

Thanks man, it is a custom setup with the Corksport IC core. The piping comes up through that hole you mentioned, using a MAM pipe from there to the TB. The rest is just crappy eBay bends routed around.

I have some pictures of how I redid the intake. Basically it is just a short ram facing down. The filter just barely pokes through a hole I trimmed in the plastic undertray near the transmission. I'll upload the pics in a little bit and post 'em up :D

Sounds good! I always wondered what the CS IC and endtanks looked like. I guess I know where I'll be going if and when my IC craps out. I just don't like how the MAM is so big - it's overkill for my 8 psi but it was the only thing available at the time.

License plate bracket for the front bumper I assume? Pics pls when you are done. I may have to copy you and make one. I'm currently rocking the no front plate mod, which is hot, but not legal so much.

My JB Weld fix for heat shield on the cat lasted for a few minutes, then it must have got too hot and failed. The noise isn't as bad though. But the JB Weld smells like peanut butter when it gets hot and was making me feel sick :(

Also my turkey is SUPER LOUD now. So my car rattles, squeaks, back fires, AND TURKEYS!!! People have to just go "WTF" when I drive by.

The worst part is my electrical gremlins. My stereo is on the fritz so bad I don't even want to turn it on. Which sucks, because that is the only way to drone out the aforementioned noises (gotta go windows down with no ac)

tl;dr I need a daily driver

Yea. My Ipod won't start or operate correctly after it has been sitting in the sun mounted to my dashboard. I have it mounted to front and side of an A/C vent so I can shoot the A/C right onto the ipod to cool it down quickly.... except I have no real A/C (basically just fans blowing) because the p5 is crap. It takes about 15 minutes to cool down enough for it to work.

Including yesterdays drive I went almost 1060 km on about 67 litres of gas, for an overall fuel economy of about 6.3 liters per 100 km. 37 miles per US gallon or so. I'm pretty happy with that. You are gonna make me blush :D The stock grille didn't fit back on because of the tabs, that core is decently thick at 3.5". I might try to make a grille if it gets too filled with bugs and whatnot, but it'd be tough to make something that looks decent.

Yeah, when I got my new bumper cover on I told them to cut out all the tabs so no lower grille for me unless it's zip tie time. So how much did you have to cut away of the bumper cover? I have the MAM (I think it's 3" deep) and I had to trim some of those support tabs on the inside of the front. I just feel the MAM one is too long...

Unfortunately, I'm getting upset with mine still. I've tried a dozen things, and still have the short that keeps my tail lights, front amber lights, fogs, and dash lights from working.

Hmm I had a pretty good go at it with the Dremel, but there is still material there :D I'd say I took off about 2"

I swapped out my HKS SSQV for another SSQV, and voila, it works. Hopefully it will stay that way. It is nice to have a friend's part stash to steal from, haha (next door even!). I also took my door panel off and found my midrange driver was disconnected, so I have music again. Yay!

I'm not looking at a stock one right now, but from those pictures, I don't see enough difference from stock to see the point of paying for the wing, paying to have it painted and figuring out what to do about the brake light. Looks like a lot of money and trouble for very little (if any) improvement.

Today I taped up and stuck my newly painted Protege5 emblem back on the hatch. All badges are painted with Krylon Fusion in satin. I am on the fence on whether or not to paint the entire Mazda symbol or leave the fanged 'M'.

Actually this is my second trophy.

My first one was 1ST Place for Custom Mazda at NOPI then Best of Show at a local car show.

The judges had a hard time deciding for best of show. They were down to 3 cars.

These are the two other cars I beat out for Best Of Show.

Big plans for the weekend if I ever get around to it:

-Blackout headlights
-Re-adjust FMIC and pipes (needs to be pushed farther back)
-Trim more off the backside of the bumper cover (shop didn't cut enough)
-Buy about 10 bolts for the bumper cover as my car returned with half as many as it went into the shop with
-Relocate coolant bottle under airfilter
-Install oil catch can
-paint radio surround (now we're getting ambitious)
-install Splitsecond AFC (haha, I can hope, right?)

Overly ambitious???

I actually got that done last weekend but it's such a crappy job I didn't want to post pics (boom08) . Right now it's just two pieces of bent aluminum that go from under the front bumper cover to vertically in front of it. the holes with the bumper cover license plate didn't lined up (license plate's are farther apart) so right now my license plate is kind of bent - contoured to the bumper cover. I know it sucks but it gets the job done until I can plan and implement a better bracket.

Works mint, took 30 min to do.

Few things:
You do NOT have to drop the tranny or any mounts.
You WILL break the plastic flute inside the outer cover (just helps move the fluid around a bit)
You will need 3.5l of fluid (Gm syncromesh here)

I haven't been able to pin-point where the oil is coming from but I'll try tomorrow when I work on the brakes. The first one leaked real bad :(

That Corksport kit looks nice but I hope for the money they have brackets on the IC or some sort of mounting system. I'm tempted to see if I can just buy their pipes... maybe I can reduce the amount of couplers I have. Or I should stop being lazy and get some bends and redo mine nicely with welds etc.

Yeah my MAM piping is looking a little rough too. I'm also looking to run a BOV in the future and this would be a fresh start. I could also utilize an intake like the Injen or something. From the pics it looked like there were a lot of mounting points though. I didn't think it was too pricey (remember the cost of the MAM and Perrin FMIC's?).

I've also been having a perpetual oil leak with my pan although I know exactly where mine is - it's in the way I have the return line connected to the pan (hose and nipple) the clamp always seems to back out a little after a while and start leaking. This last time I teflon'd that sucker up like crazy so I'm hoping that fixed something.

would you mind doing a HOW-TO for the horn install....i would really like to change my horn out but i 1. have no idea where to gt horns at and 2. have no clue how to do it.

did you get a horn like a train or horn or something along those lines...or just a louder horn?

i'm stumped... after disconnecting the stock O2 sensor in hopes of replacing it with the bosch one (and finding out it didn't fit), we reconnected the stock sensor until i can get a new OEM one. but after driving around for a little while afterwards (had to run some errands), my CEL is now gone (scratch) does this now mean my O2 sensor is fine and working? the car still runs kind of rough so i dunno. any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated.

The downstream O2 should never make the car 'run rough'. If the primary O2 was messed up, then yes. All the downstream sensor really does is ensure that the 1st Cat is functioning properly.

any ideas on what could be causing the rougher idle? (it seems to be fine while driving) also, does the lack of a CEL now mean that my second O2 is now functioning properly (ie, bad or loose connection), or should i still go ahead and replace it like i was going to initially (ie the sensor is dead)? when i went to autozone to have the codes pulled last week, this is what came up:
Code P0140: O2 Sensor, CKT No Activity, (Bank 1, Sensor 2)
Code P0037: HO2S Bank 1 Sen 2, Heater Circuit, Low

i'd rather not spend $110 right now if i don't have to; i've just moved to wichita, am getting married this weekend and won't be working for about 3 months (have to apply for my work visa after i get married) so money's a little tight...

aMaff

those codes sound like they're for a bad sensor...could just be flaky. However, I don't think that's causing your idle problem. EGR maybe?

shane02pro5
07-10-2007, 05:00 PM
Try cleaning your IAC Motor which is right on top of your throttle body. I did my EGR valve yesterday which never seems to do much, but today I did my IAC. It was cruddy and caked with carbon build up. I won't know until I'm in traffic after work but it seemed noticibly better! It is just 2 T25 torx bolts with that post that has to be ground down or a hole drilled in the torx driver.

MyZmZm

You can check very easily if you have a multimeter check any change in resistance under throttle conditions. The shop manual says to unplug the 02 sensor and probe the top left and bottom left circuit in the 02 sensor harness and hold rpm's to around 3000 until the voltmeter reads 0.5-0.7 volts and then on decel it should drop to 0.0-0.5. basically if there is up and down fluctuation from accel to decel the sensor is good. Unless you are like me and you probed to hard and bent the socket in the harness and caused an incomplete circuit. I figured this out after putting in a new sensor!

MyZmZm

amaff, shane, thanks for the suggestions. i'll have to see what i can figure out. when i had the clutch and flywheel changed in march, they did clean the egr and ever since then the idle has been about 200rpm lower than what it was previously. i don't know if they lubricated the slider for the egr, and the guys at the shop couldn't remember (it wasn't itemized on the work order whether or not that had been done).

i hate to ask and sound even more naive, but what does the IAC look like? do you have a pic of it so i know what i'm looking for? i wouldn't mind checking that possibility out... i do know that when i took the car out this evening (first time driving it after the CEL went away) to fill up, the car seemed to run better and feel more 'normal' than it has in a couple of weeks. seemed more peppy too, so maybe it was just a loose connection in the harness that was rectified after plugging it back in. (dunno) how it could have come loose, if that was indeed the cause, is beyond me. i don't go offroading in my baby...

Threw a CEL for the second time since owning her today (pissed) . Ran up to the Advance Auto Parts as soon as I noticed it fearing the worst. Well I got the code read:

P0140 - CKT No Activity (Banke 1 Sensor 2)

So "fortunately" it's just an O2 sensor - I guess it could have been worse. Once the car cools down I'm gonna get under her and check all the wires and connections. I had the code reset and it hasn't come back on yet. I'm going to hold off buying the $175 replacement part until I know mine has gone bad.

By the way, that code pretty much says the sensor is dead, correct? This isn't something that would have been caused by the non-fouler trick, right?

wow, I just saw this after I posted. I just got the P0140 today as well. Did you get this resolved by getting a new sensor? I just reset mine for the time being and I'm going to check everything once the car cools down. This is the first time I've gotten this code.

I just thought of something though. I do backfire a little while downshifting when the car is warmed up. Will this kill an O2 sensor?

The Idle Air Control Motor is directly on top of the throttle body where the intake piping leads into the intake manifold. It is a black cylindrical motor with a brass colored bracket over it. I highly recommend this to anyone with idle issues. My idle has smoothed out 100x better than it was!

Are you responding to me? I've owned the car for over 2 years now and I've turbo'd it  . Anyhow, yeah I guess I'll have to get under there and pull it out and check everything out. I hope it isn't broken - $110 for a new one just sucks. Also if the non-fouler is clogged already I'm going to be pissed - it's only been on there since late May. Damn MSP ECUs running so rich. well last weekend a freak hail storm battered my P5.
Today I found out I was running on no oil. Great.

No leaks or blue smoke, but barely a couple oz. of fluid came out.
I noticed an oil light when cornering hard, but I would assume with such little oil, it should have been on all the time. I guess not.
I swear when I double checked the oil dipstick (a couple weeks ago) there was oil on it. Now I keep questioning what i saw.

Yeah I just want out and pulled the thing out. The nonfouler was not plugged but I wasn't able to remove the sensor from the nonfouler (I don't have the right wrench size up at school) but everything looked straight. I even disconnected and inspected all plugs and wires for the sensor and all those looked fine too. So I plugged everything back in, making sure everything was nice and tight and away from anything harmful. I also disconnected the battery and let the system reset. Started her up and everything seemed fine. The only weird thing that happened (and this has happened a few times before) is my wideband was reading too lean at idle (ie. around 17:1) but after I blipped the throttle a few times it went back down to normal. I took her out for a hard run and everything seemed straight - no bogging, stalling, hesitating and the same rich-as-fuck AFR at WOT. So who knows, maybe it was just a hickup. I guess I'll find out in a few miles...

Yes they did. Took longer to drive home from work (<5 miles each way) and back and unbox them than it took to install haha.

I don't think they were true OEM though, since they came in boxes with the Depo brand name on them, which isn't a bad thing, since Depo makes the best quality aftermarket lighting.

Still going strong without a CEL but....

Last night I got pulled over and was issued summons for: illegal window tint, and improper exhaust - non factory.

I will be going to court and contesting both of these because the first offense was the window tint - how do you get someone for illegal window tint on an unlit road at 11 PM at night? Also, if I have read VA law section 42.6.1049 correctly it states that an exhaust must be in perfect working order and be one of factory make or an exhaust that exists as a replacement for the factory system (it also mentions a lot of stuff about noise but the trooper made no mention of how loud my system was period). The CS exhaust I have is indeed a replacement for the factory exhaust, performance or not. I just think the trooper was bored and felt like pulling over the first person he saw for some BS charges. I am hoping that because he pulled me over for illegal window tint first, that I can get him for pulling me over just upon speculation. Trooper was such a bastard...

Well mine just came back on today as well ~100 miles later. This time I am going to remove the sensor from the nonfouler just to make sure the sensor itself isn't junked up (can't do it today though - raining). Right now, I hope the sensor got junked up because of how rich I run but it seems like I'm probably going to have to get a new sensor. I really, REALLY hope there is nothing wrong with the wiring harness. I just think it's weird that I installed a new exhaust and no problems for almost two months and then, BAM! oxygen sensor goes. I've had oxygen sensors go on my other vehicle, but it's nearly a 22 year old truck. Guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow when it's dry, then pull and clean the sensor and then put it in again with the code cleared and wait. If it comes back on it's $110 down the drain... ugh...

-Tinted my side markers
-removed my side moldings

Soon I will be painting my headlight casings to match.

Then you are going to lower it, right? RIGHT??? :D

Looks good... and from that picture, I'm not even hating the altezzas. Need more photographic evidence though!

I think the Altezza's with the black casing and the night shade turned out REALLY well. Very happy with it.

Psst... magnum, ditch that stock ECU junk asap :)

At least then your CELs will be replaced with more fun problems :D
I have a Splitsecond AFC V2 sitting in my closet with all the stuff needed to install. I just haven't had the time to figure out where I'm going to mount it and everything. No standalong for me - I like my CEL's

You have been quite busy lately....even saw that you had some time to attend a show. :)

Today my P5 gave me a good laugh....I drove the MPV to work so I could fill it up for the wife. I then call the wifey to see how things are going and she says "Good, (pause) my boss took your car to get his Aunt." I had to laugh to myself picturing her boss (who normally drives a Mountaineer) picking up his elderly aunt in my car with the MSP axleback and SRI! I asked her when I got home how he liked it. She said that he liked it very much but felt a little cramped.

Get to work then ;)

Today I took off the race wheels and changed my front pads to the Porterfield R4S, also put the lower grille on to keep junk out of the intercooler. Then I cleaned the interior which probably hasn't been done for... oh too freakin' long! I tore the entire center console out and cleaned all the nooks and crannies out using a razor blade, Q-tips, hot water, and then finally some back to black plastic cleaner stuff. Needless to say, it took forever (started at 3 or 4). And with the 90F weather with humidity almost as high as the temperature, I was drippin' sweat like none other.

Anyway, just got back from bedding in the pads. I'm a little pissed because I still heard a squeak from one side of the car. That means more chasing gremlins to figure out what the heck it is. Damn gremlins, they're everywhere!

I just remembered I hit 55,000 miles on Sunday - that means over 20,000 miles of ownership for me and I woudn't change a thing.

On another random note. My CEL just disappeared today! It was there when I was driving to class this morning but after class I get to my car, turn it on and TADA! no CEL. I didn't do anything... weird

He is about the same size....guess he is just used to the size of his Mountaineer, that and it is probably easier to get out in/out of his too. haha

Works nicely, definitely tightens up the handling. I have only had it on since like March but, I am on stock struts with Eibach springs and 91,000 miles and haven't had any of the dreaded tab breaking problems that I have heard about after guys have installed it......

Since we reattached the stock O2 sensor, my CEL has come and gone about 4 or 5 times - currently it's on. I haven't gone to Autozone to double-check that the code(s) are the same as previously (and I should, just to make sure), but I'm really thinking something is jacked up in the wiring there somewhere. :( *sigh*

On a more infuriating note, someone gouged my rear bumper yesterday, leaving several nice deep scratches in it. No, it will not buff out. (argh) I'm thinking some jacka** wasn't watching how he was parking at the theatre last night (either pulling in or backing out) and nicely scraped me while doing so. Unfortunately because it was dark when we left the theatre I didn't notice anything. I am SOOOOOOO pissed off by this. Thankfully one of hubby's former coworkers owns a body shop. That's the only silver lining to this cloud right now...

Bah! That's the worst thing that could happen now - an electrical problem. I have no idea how to fix those and the dealership sure as hell would want to look at it - they'd probably blame the nonfouler anyway. Well I guess I just wait to see if it comes back on again...

Went to install new rear brakes and wheel bearings and found I did not have a socket to fit the nut for the hub. Got one at Autozone, 35MM. Too late by the time I got home. Wish I had a garage. Sigh, hope the weather holds
