I just did a little preventative maintenance. It seems like a lot of folks are having problems with their coils and/or plug wires at around 50,000-60,000 miles. Im at 56,000 miles so I thought Id replace mine. the coils were only $18 apiece on autozone's website. No one stocks them, I dont think my local mazda dealer even had them, they had to order them for like $30 each or something, the wires at the dealership were like $60 I think. The prices were even higher at other parts stores. I got both coils and wires shipped for $81....better than being stranded with bad misfiring and having to wait days for coils to be shipped in for big bucks.

I checked my plugs while I was at it and they were unusually clean. They have about 10,000 miles on them and the insulator was still bright white. there were some nice tan deposits on the electrode which is normal, but Id expect the ceramic insulator to be nice and tan too. Theyre the long reach plugs, heat range 6, one step colder than stock. I almost expected them to be a little fouled due to them being colder than stock. Any input? should I go colder? lol

In my experience the flip top cup holder is not a good coin holder either. Coins I have put in there have magically disappeared. And the only time it holds drinks is when we go get take-out. I like it because the interior looks cleaner with the lid down.

Theres probably some residual armor-all or something on there preventing anything from sticking....clean it real well with some rubbing alcohol, paint thinner, or other solvent and try again. Hope this helps.

Lots of car work.

RX-8:
Saturday removed rims, cleaned, used PC with SSR 2.5 to buff inside of wheel. Then applied Poor Boy's Wheel Sealant. At the same time I added another coat of my custom red flake paint to the calipers. Also got rid of the front brake squeal, both in my 8 and the Jeep. Also cleaned, waxed Jeep rims. The rest of Saturday I spent in the heated pool and BBQ with Dan and friends.

P5:
Sunday Dan came over to work on his ride. Washed car. Painted front calipers. Attached my custom MP3 style wind splitter that I painted black. Replaced ladder bar that had a run in with a dead animal on the highway. Was not a pretty picture. GT-Spec ladder installed. Mazda 6 wiper mod. Tried to add more shine to the hood but there simply is no clearcoat to work with.

it could be those, it could be the 2 coolant hoses that go to the throttle body, or it could be the 2 that go to the connectors on the firewall behind the intake manifold for the heater core.

Yes the radiator hoses are the two black hoses coming out of it. One on top and one on bottom. Check the other hoeses like aMaff mentioned.

My car currently is creaping up on 156k and will be over that in the next few days. I haven't had any problems nor had the previous owners (2nd owner). The biggest issue's that I have had is tranny slips from time to time.(regular auto and chirps shifting gear most of the time 2 to 3rd)and my rear main seal leaks when it wants to! The previous owners didn't have any problems with it with basic maintence.

I'm not sure on that one. I would contact a dealer and inquire about those items. If you care is still underwarrenty I would take it in and have them check it outfor the smell... why bother if you can get a dealer to do it for free or at least look into it.

The best way to explain slipping is when the car shifts gear the rpms jump up by about 500 rpms then drops down. Well my tranny makings a chirping noise from time to time right when it shifts... my grandma makes fun of me about it!lol She said I have a little birdie in my car instead of a hampster. lol

It's got 4500K left on the warranty, but it's not going to the knuckle-draggers at my local dealership since they took my MSP for a 5 mile joy-ride when it was in to have the rear lip fixed. gotta put some muscle into it

i did. i pulled and the car was rocking on the jackstands. the front came right off but it seemed like the back wouldnt budge... i yanked on it hard too. idk

when we did my friend's civic's suspension (he just moved down from WI), it took getting under the car and kicking them off from the inside to get them to budge...

Rust ftl

was this just the rear or front also? my front (at least driver's side) came right off.

i dont think i'd be comfortable kicking something while under the car... lol :(

why does it matter which end of the car? lol

From memory, they were the rears, but the fronts weren't exactly easy. If you've got the thing up on jackstands completely, do what you want to it lol

i just did one side at a time. but maybe i'll break the nuts lose and jack it all up... and then kick away

whitemp5seattle
06-05-2007, 12:22 AM
you can kick it from the outside of the car. all you need to do is kick it hard enough to break that rust bond. Once it's free you can pull it off.

tried to rotate my tires...is there a secret to getting the rear tires off? the front came off fine but the rear (passenger) wouldnt budge. all nuts were off. so i didnt even bother w/ the driver's side. :(

I had the same problem when i tried to rotate my old rims. i hit/nudged/bashed/pulled/kicked the back tire with all the lug nuts off and i got nothing.

Stock P5 wheels? Yeah those fuse really well in the rear - even in Cali. Rubber mallet from the inside hitting outward will free them up, but a kick should work as well ...

Soak with penetrating oil.
Bang with dead blow hammer / mallet.
Repeat.

For this:

well, tried to clean the egr valve, but couldn't get the 2 bolts that hold it up there loose. any tips? i just couldn't get to them. i took out everything that was in the way, except the battery, as my negative terminal nut was almost rounded off, and i couldn't get it loose. any tips would be appreciated.

You also need to pre soak with penetrating oil, get some flexible joint attachments for your ratchet and a friend with smaller hands helps too.

Replaced my rusty, nasty heat shield with a brand new black powder coated heat shield. Guess I really need to clean my engine bay now....

For now my rusty bolts are holding it in place. I have been thinking of buying new ones to replace them but wanted to get opinion/ideas from fellow forum members.

1) Clean old bolts and paint with high heat black
2) Clean old bolts and paint with high heat red
3) Buy new bolts and watch them rust again

Anyway....TAKE 2

Thanks to Josh for all his help as I am still not too flexible after having the appendix out.

So on the way to the "Altspace Garage" some roadkill came right out from under the car in front of me. I mean, no one on this single lane highway swerved at all. They were all able to clear it right smack dab in the middle of the road. Even if I was 4-5 car lengths I had no chance to react so I just grimaced and drove straight over it too.

But I'm lowered.

So there was a thump sound and I knew I made contact, but it was unmoved on the road behind me.
Nevertheless, there was indeed carnage on the very piece we were going to be removing, the ladder bar.

Your welcome for the visual aid...compliments of Altspace Studios (like my sig is too)

Anyhoo, wiper works great and looks hot but the front splitter is even hotter. The fresh paint on the calipers does wonders. Also opted to paint the spacers too.

I even broke out the car cover for the first time since I bought it years ago.

My wife admonished me for training her to car model. I told her she (my daughter, Rebekah) decided to be in the shot and pose, I just didn't tell her not to.

Another good way is to loosen the lug nuts, not too awful much. Then drive around for a bit. A guy I work with that used to be a mechanic said that is a sure fire way to get them separated.

why so much camber on the front?

autocrossing, but it is more than I had last season. It used to be at -2.5* or so, and about -1.5* in the rear. The new alignment is definitely not where I'd like it to be, but at least the damn toe is fixed.

Drove the car and it is starting to shape up... feels pretty good! Too much fuel yet but hopefully I can get a decent tune tonight.

Then find a host and desgin your website... Network Solutions can do that too. you could probably use HTML for what you need, but a secure website that takes credit card payments would probably be to your benefit.

I searched your domain name and it is available in .com and .net (others are available too)

Not today but last weekend went to an auto-x. Placed 6/7 in STS against some very stiff competition, a couple Mazda3's, an old Celica, 3000GT, and a Lexus IS300. The entire class was within 2 seconds of eachother when all was said and done. I had a blast as usual sept it was so damn hot out there in the Texas sun. The P5 performed beautifully, I just have to remind myself everytime I get out on the track just how much grip the car has, its pretty amazing considering I have entirely stock suspension.

Yah I love how the P5 handeled when I first got it, I could take 90 degree corners at about 45-50mph. Wait till you see what it could do with springs, rear strut bar, bigger rear sway bar, and better trailing arms.

Gunna turn 88,888 miles old on the way home from work today. She's sitting in the parking lot at 88,887 right now.

Thought for sure I was gunna get one of the "your car is cute" comments yesterday. I was at my sons field day at school yesterday and was taking the camera out to the car. One of my sons friends mothers was walking by as I was getting in the door. I get the "is that your car" question. So I reply and wince waiting for the "cute" remark. the obx is only a 4-1 header, they didn't make a 4-2-1. i sent the guy who made the listing a message and he changed the pictures inside the description to what the obx really is. he still has the gallery pic as a 4-2-1 though. not to mention his description of an 04 p5. ractive is the 4-2-1

Just ordered an oil sandwich plate. Hopefully this will prove one of three things: 1) my oil pressure is reading really low because it is inline with the oil feed line; 2) the gauge is fux0r'd because the gauge reads no differently in the new location; or 3) my car is fux0r'd because the gauge is fine and reading the same in both locations.

I know the feeling. AZMC did a mountain run last weekend. The heat shield on my midpipe cat came loose on one side. So it was resting on the crossmember. It was making a horrible tinny rattle. Today My father - in - law welded it back on for me. Then I came home and my daughter and I detailed the car for my photoshoot tomorrow.

child labor ftw! haha jk...

I had just started buffing the hood when Lexi asked me if she could do it.

I showed her what to do and she buffed my entire hood while I did the roof by hand. That shine is all her doing and she is proud of it.

its gonna be close believe me, mine has practically no clearance, but is fine except when it rains, then it begins to vibrate, but only when it gets wet underneath. good luck.

well i adjusted my exhaust as best i could, i only have one thing left to try before i replace the rear muffler hanger w/ the stock one. i have about 3-3.5 mm of clearance of the pipe and the chassis body above the crossmember. how much does it expand when hot? i'm hoping this will be enough :( anyone know about how much the pipe expands?

here is a picture, i dont know why it is so close :(

someone on another forum was sayin it needs 20mm and i called the BS card. thats 2 cm, if there was that much room the s pipe would be on the ground. so far no vibes/rattle, i am gonna adjust the midpipe monday or tuesday hopefully to give it even more room. :)

yes it's a 10" JL. i couldn't tell you what the inside volume is, but there's more than enough room for the sub. for specifics, you'd have to pm Allen (mryellermp5) since he's the one who made it for me. i'd rather not say what the price was, but even with shipping (and let me tell you, that sub box was WELL protected; he is the MAN when it comes to properly shipping things) it was far cheaper than any quote i got here in town. The P5 is a great car... however, it's just not going to tow the boat I'm getting and I have no need to 2 cars... so it had to go. My replacement is a 2004 Subaru Forester XT, which I plan to build up some this summer. Yeah I just made a similar post in the GB thread. I'm not really too upset because I know every car has its own small differences but I was really surprised how much metal I had to grind away. Honestly I was expecting to have to do a littler tweakingshaving but not grinding down nearly 1/2" total of metal. Unfortunately I nicked the top surface once or twice so it isn't spotless but it still looks nice. I'm going to have to get used to not having my nut/bolt/tool tray anymore.

Oh I'm sure. I was looking at it today after I installed and polished it and I had half and idea to paint it black to make it flow a little better with my engine bay (most everything is black or red) but then I thought better of it realizing it would have pretty much been a waste.

1 - no mp3's that i know of in the area to 'flash' off of
2 - i've heard from one or two people on the boards who've gone this route that they've had problems and had to go back to the stock P5 'settings'. don't know if they had other mods, etc, on the cars that would have affected this, but i didn't want to run the risk.

btw, i already have one in hand, just wanted to confirm that the serial number was one of the correct ones.

Did you find any info yet?
i think so - i finally came across a thread that listed three different serial numbers, one of which is what i have (it was in the mp3 subforum), and from what i recall (i used to have them written down), it sounds accurate. i might try calling one of the local dealers to double check.

I also came within about 1 foot of hitting a deer on the way home...almost had to add my p5 to the recently injured list. That curse is out to get us! Watch out everybody!

I'm pretty sure Justin can rebuild and swap a motor in his sleep, he has so much experience with it :D
i agree with you on that one
but i think my car might be getting totaled out by my insurance company. mines only worth around $7200 and im close to $5000 in damage (factoring in the front end damage from my wreck as well as the motor and anything else that needs to be replaced)
so if its gets totaled out, im moving on to a 1993 240SX
i guess we'll just have to wait and see

Changed the front wheel bearings and got an alignment done. It's nice and quiet now.

i'm on illuminas (set at 3) and ion sport springs, so at 'normal' ride height i have at max 1" between the top of the tire and the wheel well. with my car loaded the way it was on sunday... lol, you saw the pictures i posted. :p i hate to think how low i would have sunk on stock springs and struts, since they're so much 'softer' than what i have now.

A new Wawa just opened up and 87 octane is $2.79g or $2.74g cash. Sunday I filled the van at the same station for $2.78g cash. The Giant station next to it is $2.81g

It is great watching all of the other stations in town drop their prices .02 a day to keep up. About a month ago a station a mile away was $3.06....today $2.87! No price gouging here....BS

When I left for Delaware for the Auxone meet, I paid $3.49 for 87. When I filled up two days ago...I paid $2.79 at the same station. What kind of BS is that? Granted, I'm glad it's cheaper now...
