a swap isn't that hard (peep)

now you have to swap your car to sunlight silver, which is so much more costly :p

I'll admit though.. the P5 I had intentions to buy (but they sold out from under me when I was on my way there (4 hour drive)) was black.. with black and bright blue leather interior.. but the chrome stock wheels that I don't really like (early 02).

I'm glad I found my sexy silver senorita :)

rig up a system for autocrosses w/ washer nozzles where you use the sprayers to spray down your tires. Heyyyyy, that's a damn brillian idea! Screw spray bottles!

Today I washed my engine bay in the Prote to get it a little cleaner. You know how dirty it always is. Then washed the rest of the car.

Then took degreaser and sprayed the engine bay and under body of my truck. Its a Dodge

Grease
Everywhere

After degreasing the truck I went ahead and washed it and checked and topped off all the fluids.

Both my upper and lower grilles are painted gloss black with blue mica.

Make sure they are totally clean before painting and use several coats of clear to keep it from chipping.

Back from the test and tune. The only pic I took (the weather was miiiserable) was before I left, when I realized that a bird took a crap right on my HKS SSQV. No poo on the grille in my hood, so the bird literally must have stood right on the vent to take a crap on my car. w/e at least the bird was considerate enough not to get it on the paint :)

So I got 12 runs in, twas quite fun. Fastest time of the day was a 48 in type-aRRRR swapped civic on slicks with coilovers and such (in SM). I got a 51.65.. at least I think that was my best, on a few runs I forgot to look at my time.

Kansei
04-28-2007, 06:25 PM
But all is not well. My car needs some stuff now that it has so much more power. First, of course, is an LSD.. I need one badly.. either that, just much stickier tires, or preferably both. I don't like needing to feather the throttle so much.

The other thing I need is just a beefier front sway bar. This isn't related to the added power really, just an observation I had today. The car oversteers a lot, dry or wet (my first set of 4 runs was in the dry).

I guess the excessive oversteer could have been a tire issue too. It wasn't until I got back and saw my checklist in the garage that I realized I forgot to check my tire pressure before leaving >_<

front left: 34.. front right: 32

rear left: 31.. rear right: 31.5

Plus the fact that I changed my spring last weekend and need an alignment again.. right now my camber/caster is adjusted differently on both sides in the front (judging by the dots on the strut towers). When I set them to the "stock" position the car drove strangely and the steering wheel was no longer centered..

how much power you packin?

noooooo clue. There was a Mazdaspeed Protege (sunlight silver w00t w00t) running RDS .. but I didn't ask him what his times were for comparison. I should have had him drive my car to see if it felt any more powerful to him. It should be quite a bit more powerful.. 7 psi vs 5.5, corksport downpipe, FMIC, full exhaust, JDM intake cam, intake, etc.. but I won't know until I get dyno tested (soon.. soon)

whats RDS?(dunno) noob i know :)

D-stock class (the class the MSP is in), with Road tires (dot approved tires).

Protege5 is in H-stock, but I'm NSM (Novice Street Mod).

who cares about classing though, so much fun! I had a ton more fun today than I did at the "formal" event I attended last year.. I don't know if it's because there were just 30 people there so it was a whole lot less crowded than the usual 150-200, or if it was because I got so many more runs in, but it was a blast!

edit: I forgot to mention another thing that could be the cause of my grip issues.. it was only 45 degrees outside.

Standing outside in the cold rain for half an hour or so while the next run group got a set of runs in was no fun.

I wouldn't mess with a front sway bar yet, it'd be a PITA first off. You can do a lot of other stuff first. More negative camber in the rear will help a ton. It made almost a night and day difference in my car. And like you said, stickier tires and playing with your pressures will help quite a bit.

Kansei
04-28-2007, 10:23 PM
I just figured that since racing beat says the sway bars complement each other and are meant to only be used in pairs..

It was fine with just the racing beat rear sway.. but adding the axr clunk fix bracket really made a world of difference.

I'm already at -1 in the rear.. WAIT SH!T!! I forgot, the teins raised the rear of my car by probably 3/4" to 1".. so there went that camber haha. It was too soon to get an alignment before this event.. so I'll just suck it up at the autocross tomorrow and get an alignment done before the next event... and hopefully in doing that I'll get my front alignment sorted out. My alignment paperwork shows -1 camber and the same toe (same on both sides.. not same as the camber) on each side, but they didn't list the caster. I know the caster shouldn't be the same on both sides because one dot is pointing toward the front, the other toward the back.. and one points to the inside, one to the outside.. But the alignment does feel fine. It doesn't really look like there's any other user adjustable things on the front suspension, but rotating the top of the strut can't be the only thing they do during an alignment.

Somehow my car got aligned with the strut tops as they are now (not the same on each side).. it confuses me. Oh well, time to drop $175 on an alignment again >_<

Yesterday... took her up and around Mt. Tabor here in western VA for some of the hardest running she's ever been through as part of the VT car club bi-annual after-carshow cruise. About 150 total miles of the most curvy and altittude-varying roads I have ever seen - after the first leg my rear brakes were smoking and boy was that engine hot after keeping her up around 5k RPM most of the time. I wish I had some pics but unfortunately I was focussing more on driving at the time... So anyway, does anyone know of some pads that are better than stock but still have good day-to-day performance and little brake dust? I know nothing about brake pads...

Yesterday: Washed her and took her for a few laps on Road Atlanta. It was so cool! They oversold the tickets for the touring laps and there were a few douches that were holding up traffic, but what can you do? I got to take 10a/b and the esses at 8-9/10ths (still have to driver her to work on Monday lol). That was just nuts. It took them a while to get all the 'parade lap' folks off track, so we were sitting in grid for a while. Once we started moving, they kind of rushed you on track, so I wasn't thinking about until I was shooting for the apex of turn one. It was a lightning bolt of "holy crap. I'm on ROAD ATLANTA! HELL YEAH!" I can't wait to take the Miata to a few PDXs out there. Kirk racing needs to hurry up w/ my rollbar already ;)

Yep that's what i had. They held up nicely at buttonwillow raceway and lasted quite a while for daily driving after that.

Their main ones are the HP Plus and HPS. I honestly wouldn't put the pluses on my daily driver. While they're AWESOME pads, it takes a while to get them up to temp, and they're really dusty, and REALLY noisy. The HPS is a far more streetable pad, with better cold bite.

I have a combination of both on the Miata. HP+ front, HPS rear. It's kinda funny, the HPSs squeek (very little, but still) when they're cold, and the HP+ squeak when they're warm, so no matter what, I've got some brake noise in that thing. However, when I get on the brakes once they've warmed up, it's like I put out a damn anchor lol

Today I installed some clear corner lights (before the game started of course):

http://www.msprotege.com/members/BadKarma/ClearCorners_2b.jpg

http://www.msprotege.com/members/BadKarma/ClearCorners_3.jpg

Interestingly enough, they didn't fit properly with the given orientation. I had to switch the sides around, as well as turn them upside down before they went on. On top of that, I had to file down a couple tabs on the back of each light, but guess what? They fit perfectly... No gap, on tight, and look great!

Also detailed her, cleaned the MAF sensor, and replaced the K&N drop-in air filter with a regular one. The K&N did pretty much nothing and it's not worth keeping it in and having to worry about the MAF possibly getting oil buildup.

Got the left arm tanned too driving in the nice sunny weather... (sun)

That looks really nice! The best-looking alternative to buying and painting an MSP bumper cover.

Today I finished installing my modified MSP shift rod and knob and Redline shift boot. The MSP shifter is too short--didn't want to reach too low so I lengthened it 1.5". Now the MSP knob is about 1.5" shorter than stock P5 shift knob height. If you're interested, the result is shown here (http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showpost.php?p=3128340&postcount=53) and in the attachment.

Also, why'd you go with the MSP shifter instead of a kartboy or B&M short shifter?

Yeah the fabric matches almost perfectly--you can only tell the shift boot is slightly darker if you hold it next to the seat bolster. After installation, you can't tell at all.

I didn't go with a short shifter because it's not in tune with my modding philosophy. I like to sit halfway between stock and tuner. Subtle mods FTW. Plus, the MSP unit will go easier on my synchros. :)

Just get pads.. the stock brakes are good. Maybe for high speed road course (like if you were doing grand-am series racing or similar) bigger brakes would be a necessity.

What pads/rotors are you using right now? I've never seen smoke from my stock-size brakes.

Bah, blew out the passenger headlight for some unknown reason! Just started the car up and immediately switched on the headlights and FLASH! there goes the light. I hope it was just the bulb's time to go and not some more serious problem...

Ahh the dreaded blown head light! My biggest gripe with the P5.Dont try the silver stars they wont last 2 months usually hehe. my roommate has a p5 too and it seems like the bulbs blow more often when its been raining. not sure if this is true or just coincident.

Well I guess I gotta be more careful because my turbo drains oil to the pan and I don't want the oil level to get too high there.
Why? You'll have far less oil in the pan when your engine is running.

Over the weekend, we did an oil change and I swapped to the 626 filter and it was quite nice not to have any leftover oil this time. Also swapped out the stock front motor mount that had 3 tears in it and put in an AWR manual front mount, so the car's a bit rumbly now. :)

now your rear mm will go here shortly or at least it did on mine. I still need to replace it. lol

Nope, didn't eliminate it. Just used the same bracket and bolted it to one of the existing bolts. I'll try to take some pics today after work. And yes its the CP Racing style strut bar....but it still makes a hell of a difference, original cp or not, lol.

Kicked the front tire when I found it super low on air this morning. I'm thinking it may have something to do with the bubble that's the size of a quarter in the sidewall...

Gotta do something about that before Saturday...definintely not driving 5 hours like that.

Hahaha thats the first I have heard the AWR mounts described that way.

I have the 95 AWR mounts front & rear and I love starting my car. It feels like there really is a motor up there under the hood.
Well, when you're used to driving a mostly stock (engine/exhaust-wise) P5 or Miata on a daily basis, you forget until you sit in a race prepped Camaro or heavily modded WRX/STi, what power feels like and sounds like. :) I am glad the carputer is no longer in though because it would probably be having fits w/ the vibration.

now your rear mm will go here shortly or at least it did on mine. I still need to replace it. lol

well i got the SLS mount in....however the stock nuts did not fit the bolts SLS sent me, so i spent an 30 minutes running places to see who had what fit...ace finally had it, lowes didnt. SLS needs to get bolts that fit the stock nuts.... one of the bushings still isnt up against the mount all the way and when i push it against it all the way it wont stay. so not sure about that....

now on top of it all...my car is makin a funny noise again.... its kinda like a creak and i can feel the clutch vibrate when the sounds starts...so i hope my clutch isnt screwed now....it's a creak but it's low pitched, not a high squeely one. so now i am concerned. i dont know what it is. if i start out really slow and release the clutch really slow it doesn't do it, but if I start of normal it does.... It's one problem after another....

Well the last time was the week of the Spring Cleaning meet. So from that week until today it was 3 weeks and one day...

I checked the purge solenoid valve (thinking something might have gone wrong with it since it's been cheaply mounted somewhere in my engine bay instead of on the stock air intake for a few years), but it doesn't seem to be smoking or anything so I don't think it's stuck open. might be time to try buying a new gas cap or something...

The BAD news (for SLS not me): the mount caused the problem
The GOOD news: the noise stopped once i replaced the SLS w/ the stock mount

so i am in the process of contacting SLS to get my money back. not sure why this caused a problem but it did. i even drove it again this morning w/ the SLS mount it and it did it, changed it to stock, works fine now.
