Inner pad shaved to bare metal, outer pad looking almost new. I'm not sure exactly what's wrong yet, but I'm going to work with the caliper to make sure the piston isn't frozen. I'm really not in the mood to rebulid it, so I'm hoping I don't have to get into much with it. I've got it torn apart right now and I sprayed a healthy dose of PB Blaster on the piston. We'll see in the morning. I have to find a parts store near me that has the rear rotors in stock tho...

i only read this if you are talkoing about the back break they twis instead of pull/push

I don't what I'm gonna do today...I have a lot of free time and it's REALLY sunny outside.

Maybe I'll paint my calipers? thinking about painting them red with some sort of brush on paint...easier that way :p

or maybe I'll install the msp pedals I have sitting around...

msp pedals ftw!

5.5mm drill bit for the accelerator pedal, 7mm socket for the nut on the back side

yea its definetly worth it along with tweeters, i have to really tune everything though, im not used to having so much high range. (its actually a little too much for me, and i have to turn the gain down on my subs, its WAY too loud lol)

thanks! I'm about to try the clutch and brake pedals first. if I can get them on then I'll borrow my friends drill to install the accelerator. Wish me luck!

Did you get that nut off the last strut yet?

whitemp5seattle
04-22-2007, 02:29 PM
ok got the clutch and brake pedals on...mostly lol

they're about 3/4ths the way on...they're definitely not going anywhere and sit even. I used the metal hook of a bungee cord to help get the darned rubber grommet over the metal. worked well enough for me I guess. my fingers hurt.

Kansei
04-22-2007, 02:56 PM
yeah my fingers hurt for a while after getting those on. I had those two on for a couple months before I did the accelerator, and it was a quick job.

wait, that drill bit size I posted is wrong.. that's the allen wrench size you'll need for the bolt that goes through the pedal. I don't recall what the drill bit size was right now >_<

whitemp5seattle
04-22-2007, 02:58 PM
4.5mm or 3/16" the instructions say :)

and a 2.5mm allen wrench. you got the 7mm socket wrench right though

Kansei
04-22-2007, 03:01 PM
2.5mm?? that's crazy small. I know I had to buy another set because I didn't have half-mm sizes.

Yeah I used a 3/16 drill bit and that worked great.

wait I'm out in the garage right now I can go check.

Yup, 2.5mm it is.

Kansei

how's that last strut going?

Haven't touched it yet today :P but I did get the 2nd garage laptop set up nicely :P

I also finally adjusted my e-brake .. now it only takes like 4 clicks to be firm, it wasn't like that even when I first got the car :P

I also drilled the hole for the LED for the factory alarm.. I had it drilled before, but I replaced that piece with a new one and the LED has just been dangling. Also the little trim piece down by the accelerator pedal around the floor air vents is finally reinstalled.. probably hasn't been in the car in a year haha.

My gauge cluster beeps again too... but with an 01 or early 02 speaker, my 02.5 speaker was different so I decided to swap.. just a little soldering, and two wires and good to go.

whitemp5seattle
04-22-2007, 04:05 PM
I didn't even know you could adjust the parking brake. mine clicks like a bajillion times (about 9 or 10 times actually)

Kansei
04-22-2007, 05:02 PM
it's crazy simple to do. Just pull up that trim piece that surrounds the e-brake handle, and on the driver's side of the handle there's a 10mm nut. Just tighten it. I just used a long 10mm socket with a 3" extension, worked great.

stock wheels with spacers look really nice. they are way too tucked in stock. I had project kics spacers front and rear and it really set off the look, even before I was lowered.

And wutz isn't a word :p

I used Dupli color yellow brake caliper spray paint. In the past Ive done it with the brush on version (red and yellow). So, far this looks to be a brighter yellow! The brush on color looked a lil mustardy. I like it so far. We'll see if it holds up better than the brush on. Ill have to do the rears later this week.

last night the car was running like HELL, i had to gun the thing and drop the clutch just to get it started and it was misfiring and lurching all over the place. it had brief fits of this behavior over the past few days, but last night was undrivable. finally a CEL came on, so at 1:30am I drove over to trusty autozone, and sure enough P0300 random misfire or some crap. it turns out one of my spark plug boots had come unseated and was arcing across my plug. from a potentially ugly CEL it was only a $1.25 fix for some grease stuff to put between my boots and plugs to help prevent arcing!

i had to laugh at myself at 2:30am in the parking lot of autozone removing my spark plugs. if i hadn't have been so tired i would have been really pissed. autozone FTW!

Also, does anyone else get a lot of transmission noise from their kartboy shifter bushings? Especially in 5th I can really hear the gears wizzing, kinda sounds like a diesel or something.

I don't think it does at all if you have your seatbelt buckled before starting the car.

I finished installing my springs! wewt. I gotta order a couple nuts and washers from mazda to "complete" the job, until then I'm not putting the trunk back together and I'm gonna have some rattles.

What we (myself and an acquaintance from roclife.org) ended up needing to do was clamp onto the strut piston (!) with pipe pliers (not to be confused with a pipe wrench), padded with those blue disposable shop towels they sell at auto parts stores. The trick is that not only do the shop towels protect, they also give grip :)

time to start a thread in the onlinemazdaparts.com section to ask about the strut nuts and those washers with the "D" cutout in them. (spin)

As for the tein s-techs.. zomg they raised my car! Seriously by like a full inch in the rear, and maybe.. 0.25 inches up front. :'( at least she sits evenly now, I hope they settle a little lower. I have no way of testing out the springrates in Rochester because well.. a bunch of flat straight roads is no good way to test handling (bird) , but I did take her over some serious potholes and I gotta say, the ride quality is muuuuuch better now. Didn't feel bouncy at all.

You'll get a little whine through the shift lever with the kartboy bushings, that's normal. If it's loud (like other people in the car notice it) then yeah that's probably the heat shield. I had to remove the heat shield and cut a region off so that the shift lever wouldn't hit it (I have the TWM).

Number 3 pet peeve is ultralong paragraphs. They just seem to turn me off. I spend all day reading difficult technical papers, so the last thing I want when I spend some leisure time on the forum is to wade through a huge block of text. The 'enter' key is your friend. Outline style facilitates the process. No one's style will change upon reading this, but that's cool. I'll still wade through the long paragraphs, squint my eyes at stylized text, and reread poor sentence structure again and again to extract the meaning. Ok, I'm done. Please proceed with your posting. :)

Yeah I removed the whole thing for the time being but the cable is currently zip-tied to the STB - it isn't pretty but it does the job until I can figure out what I will be doing with the cruise control.

i need to reset my ecu again
apparently driving fast while its learning is a bad idea lol. oh well. ill do that tomorrow
because right now i am getting the world's shittiest gas mileage for an econobox. im talkin ~19mpg.....yeeeeeaaaa about that..
thats about what I got on my first 2 tanks when I put the turbo on.

well i ran the piss out of it a lot so that way the ecu could map the AFR through all the rpm ranges, but now that its reset the gas mileage has been REAL shitty. so idk what to do. should i just let it be and see if it gets better after a few tanks or should i reset it again?
if i should reset it again, how should i drive the car?

yea it def runs rich right after you do it, i mean ungodly rich. makes for nice pickup though :P but yea i suppose ill wait like 2 or 3 tankfuls of gas and if it hasnt improved by then, ill reset it again.

Nope no problems taking it out. Removing the cable from the cruise unit was a bit of a PITA but after fighting that everything just came out - just a matter of loosening some nuts and unplugging a connection. I had a picture of when I first installed mine a while back...

I got 33ish highway :) wewt

but since most of my driving is city traffic, really short trips, or romping on it, I've gotten like 18mpg on a couple tanks.

Before I was turbo, 33-36highway and like 27 as my worst ever recorded (with all the NA mods I had).

A day or two later, I was showing them to a friend of mine and for some reason or another, I put the big one back into the shipping box. Only the big one. Sunday is the day that I burn any cardboard or paper that I accumulate during the week, so rather than look to see if anything was in the box before burning it, I just took everything out there and lit it. Why check it? I saw them on the coffee table. Unfortunately, it was just two of them. The rings don't like fire. Always double check that all parts are where they should be!

Right now i'm on stockers. The picture you see is Eibach prokit and tokico hps. I still have the tokicos on but I want to get a different spring. This time I was something linear. It's not like our cars are a smooth ride anyway.

my ride is MUCH smoother on the stiffer, linear teins than it ever was on the progressive, soft goldlines..

it was either that the tokico HPs were valved too high for the goldlines or because of using stock bumpstops before. buying a pair of msp bumpstops (just the two are needed) when lowering a Protege5 should be mandatory. I wish I had known the first time!

I couldn't find them on their site.. like most MSP stuff it isn't listed.

The MSP has the same ones on all four corners.. they are very similar to the front Protege5 ones.. slightly shorter (maybe 1/3"), but stiffer. So buy a pair, install them on the front, and install your old front ones on the rear.

Then point and laugh at how massive the stock rear bumpstops are..

I'll go dig up the thread with the bumpstop pictures and part numbers..

Bump stops limit the travel of the shock/strut. Smaller bumpstops = more travel. I wouldn't suggest this for stock struts. The tokico HP's are ment for lowered cars and could handle it.

If you lower your car with a spring and you're using stock bump stops that are taller then you're pretty much riding on the bumpstops all the time. This doesn't allow the strut to travel as it should to smooth out your ride. It really makes great sense now that I think about it.

less travel = bumpy ride. The purpose of the bump stops is to keep the shock / strut from bottoming out (which generally will destroy it). When you lower it, you decrease your strut travel. Think of it this way: Ever ridden in a go cart? That is literally 0 suspension travel (except for some tire flex). Bumpy, right? Ever ridden in a stock benz E class? Tons of suspension travel. Smooth as butter (of course this is really over simplifying things, but you get the idea).

Most lowering springs do not have high enough spring rates to keep the car off of the stock bump stops during hard cornering. B/c of that, w/ a long (stock) bumpstop, you'll basically be riding on the bumpstop, not letting the suspension do its job. This not only makes for a harsh ride, but can also make for some skittish handling when your spring rate suddenly goes from 150# to approaching infinity (for the record: exageration) as you hit the bump stop.

I hope that helped, as I'm @ work, and it's probably pretty convoluted.

So did you do that on the Miata or the P5? And how is the ride difference?

that depends on whether or not your struts have enough valving to handle the new springs.

and how would i go about finding this out

aMaff
04-24-2007, 11:11 AM
I did it on both cars. I dunno abt the difference on the P5, b/c I did the bumpstops at the same time I lowered it, so I can't really give a comparisson of lowered w/ or w/o shorter bumpstops.

On the miata, I can. The rear had the stock bump stops for a little while. The miata has little shock travel to begin with, and I was WAY low (like slammed lol) in the rear. W/ stock bump stops, going over bumps on the interstate meant negative G's (ie me coming of the seat lol). With new, shorter bump stops, the ride was noticeably improved. After I rasied it up to a non-retarded height, the ride was INCREDIBLY better. B/c I've got very good shocks on the car that can easily handle the spring rates I have (which are 375#/in in the rear, 550#/in front), the ride is actually very good for a car as stiff as it is. I don't even take everything out of 'race mode' (ie soften the valving, etc) after the races anymore. I've pretty much got it where I like it.

EDIT: For the record, the mitat almost rides as well as the P5 lol.

Amsgator, you can generally call the shock manufacturer and tell them what spring rates you plan on running, and they'll tell you yes or no.

meinp5
04-24-2007, 11:17 AM

Well...you don't have to...but if you don't you'll likely blow the stockers out. Then you'll need new struts anyway. So I would bypass that step and do all the work at one time.

it still shakes but i think it's from the header. it's not as bad as it was, one of the plugs was pitted and i changed all 4 and i think that helped quite a bit.

i think the front and passenger side mounts are ripped so that's why i was going to order the sls front, that may help as well. i'll get their side mounts when the driver's side mount comes out, i just dont like the idea of replacing one side mount and not the other.

Hey e'rebody,

To answer questions asked on previous pages, I got my ticket for "traveling fast" (I was caught going 48 in a 30...honest mistake...oops). Original trial date was in March, but I was traveling for work so I had it reschedule to today.

I went in, talked to a state attorney, explained that it was just a mistake and thatr I have a good driving record with no tickets. Waited in line for almost an hour to talk to the guy for 2 minutes.

I ended up paying a "charitable contribution" of $75 and having the ticket anulled. So no insurance hike. Yay! (And the original ticket was for $167 or something, so $75 is great)

I don't get it either, I'm totally new to all of this :( . Here's what I've got so far: Torque is the rotational force that is directly produced, while horsepower is calculated from: (Torque x Engine speed) / 5,252 = Horsepower.

So I guess HP is a derivative of torque, where 5252 is the magical number where HP is equal to torque. Anyone have a good explaination of it all for us?

Niiice... I took a RSX a while back just because I didn't want him to cut me off - should have seen the look on his face. It's funny though, I've had at least a few people ask when kind of car I drive. The best was when an older guy in another P5 asked me what kind of car it was - he thought it was some kind of special edition Mazda or something. I guess it was the MSP wheels and the 323F emblem...

mazda_pro5_2nr
04-24-2007, 10:40 PM
Ams, think of it this way and its pretty easy. A Honda motor can be spanked off the line due to the fact that they lack so much torque but if you race one top end....good luck.

But if you have shitloads of torque, it is used more on off the line. Cars that have tons of torque and not a lot of Hp are not good top end.

So basically, HP is used more at the top end, but torque is more useful off the line.

Well, HP is never equal to torque since they have different units; it's like comparing apples to oranges. I'm not a mechanical engineer, but I could be, so here goes :)

Torque is the amount of force produced at a certain distance from something that rotates, like your axle or crankshaft. It has units of work.

Power is an amount of work done per unit time.

Power=work/time=torque/time. That 5252 is in the forumula to make the units work out right: Power is measured in horsepower, Torque in ft*lb, reciprocal time in RPM. In Europe, where they measure Torque in Newton-Meters and Horsepower in Kilowatts, that number will be different. but the principle is the same.

So torque is more or less the force your car applies to the ground to impart motion; power indicates the rate at which your car performs some task.

That's my shot; InstallShield2 could probably give a beautifully elegant explanation, you may want to post the question in the 2.0 tuning subforum.

What can I do to fix the lean mix? A day prior to this I had put 1/2 a can of Seafoam into a nearly empty gas tank, could that have caused it? I would think that my injectors are clean. Might it be fuel pump/filter related?

oh, and I just finished putting in the new exhaust hangers! I was working on the last one, and it started to rain big heavy drops. I was like "NO YOU DON'T!!!"

and then the rain stopped after 15 seconds and hasn't started again since :)

yay for exhaust hangers! I took some pics so I might make a how-to since there isn't one on the forums yet...

i've thought about selling plasma but i still wouldnt spend that much just for a coating. it bothers me that its discolored a lil but it doesnt bother me 200+ dollars worth

there's a GB for Jet-Hot going on though...only $130 to coat headers (approx)

dark blue car + yellow pollen = green p5 :(

yep, "powder coating"... hahaha... would be pretty funny if someone actually powder coated a whole car though... it would probably be really expensive... hahaha
