I got a CEL during the ELEVEN hour drive back to Rochester.. should have been 5 hours 30 minutes ugh snow/slush + summer tires + major, major car accident in MA holding things up.

As for the CEL.. I think the car just didn't like the extreme rain? I'll have to get the code pulled, but won't have time to do that until.. Tuesday evening at the earliest.

The car kept doing this hardcore sputtering if it went past like 4 or 5ish psi in 5th (like if I pushed the "resume" button after getting stuck behind a slow moving vehicle). I don't know if it was fuel cut or a misfire or what is going on. Car was still totally driveable, just kept it out of boost for the rest of the trip back (the CEL came on when I was about an hour from my destination).
Sounds very similar as to what happened to me a while back except I was driving in rain. Let me know what the CEL was for because if its the MAF then something is up.

yeah I was in the rain. I have a break until 2pm right now so if I can find a place that'll read the code I'll go do that (there aren't really any autozones around, does advance auto do it for free?

edit: the CEL is off now, but hopefully it is stored still.. I've never dealt with this CEL stuff :P

My trim is CF, well simulated.

Hey Kansei, sorry for not seeing this earlier but yeah that is the exact same code I pulled a while back. It seemed like everytime I got into a decent amount of boost I hit fuelcut. Have you checked your MAF at all? I actually had a little water in there and it looked like there was some corrosion on the sensor part. I just took mine out and dried it off and sprayed some MAF cleaner and everything works just fine now. I do have an extra MAF with me at all times now though.

2/4 poly exhaust hangers today......question: where do the pair of 12mm (as opposed to 10mm) hangers go, front or back?

Kansei

They are not too bad to install if you lube em up a bit. Where they really suck is if you have to take em off. Only way to do it is with an exhaust hanger tool. My borhter in law has one. It's the only way to fly. They are a bitch to remove by hand.

yeah, getting the old ones off was the toughest for me too, but i think i might have put the larger 12mm poly hangers where the 10mm should be (by the muffler). I haven't jacked up the car to look at the other 2 yet. I used lithium grease for sweet lubing action

yeah don't even bother... weird that DG doesn't make pieces that cover that, but they are quite a bit more intricate than any of the other interior pieces DG makes covers for. I can't imagine how poor the fitment would be on them...

I wonder though.. has anyone in here sanded down the stock silver pieces? I know on the trim piece around the radio, the entire piece actually has the fake CF pattern on it and they just painted over it with silver on the middle part.

maybe in canada thatz true, but in US if u don't copy write and u put the information out in public then it is officially public property... u can try to go back and copyright it in retrospect, but it probably won't work... and especially because there is nothing original or inciteful in that picture

So did you have to modify the DG hood to make it work with the turbo? I'm just interested because the duct would be right above my air filter.

I just cant use the original intake box set up it had. I just have it wide open to cool the engine bay. I have my intake relocated to the bottom of the cars front fender well now.

Yup. Just like an open hole with some mesh to keep low flying birds out. LOL! I did a whole custom FMIC and I had no room in the bay for the air cleaner, so I had to go down south.

Um no. DaveB rings are $30.00.. and have better fitment, don't have to be glued in at all ever, etc.

Plus let's not even get in to the fact that SU got banned from here for shady business practices.

I'll jump on the supporting DaveB's rings bandwagon too. The rings and his antenna were the first things I bought for my car. I have had them for probably 3 1/2 yrs and have never had to touch em to keep em in the dash. No glue dots, no nothing. Just a high quality cool looking piece. Plus, Dave is just a pretty cool guy anyway.

Actually, the hangers went in fairly well this time (I did the 2 by the muffler earlier). The pair of 10mm definitely go up front, and a big set of pliers and some lithium grease did the trick! If I do my exhaust this summer they are going to be a bitch to get back off though

I just gave my car a bath. With the bright lights on the front of the garage and on the back of the house, I had lighting on every side of the car except the driver's side.. so I just did it by touch :P

when my stock wheels are clean I really like them a lot.. but the summer wheels should be back on tomorrow after work, along with some tein s-techs (still gotta go rent the spring compressor, should have done that today doh).

Oh and I found a shop in Rochester (an EVO/DSM shop) that carries amsoil 5w30 and 10w30 at lower prices than I paid for royal purple or redline.. under 7 dollars a quart. I gotta go there or call and see if they can special order some amsoil synthetic marine grease so I can load up my grease gun and attach it to my rear sway bar bushings :)

Kept the P5 from getting squished by an SUV.

When I dropped my daughter off at school today the Lexus SUV at the white curb in front of me decided to back up before pulling out into traffic. Not one or two feet mind you, but 3 car lengths. Good thing I stopped 8 feet behind it, as I just barely had time to slam the P5 into reverse and back up like crazy to get out of that monster's way. Honked like mad the whole time, while frantically looking back and forth between the rear view mirror and the rapidly approaching rear bumper. Pure luck there wasn't another road barge sitting right behind me.

A$$hole drove off as if nothing had happened.

Remember that the bottom line lies in the overall diameter of wheel/tire combo in relation to your drop - it doesn't matter if you have 14's or 19's.

Mine have held up for over 2 1/2 years just fine AND my seats don't smell like sweat or ass either. Car still has factory smell after almost 4 years FTW! Unless I luck onto a full leather interior they'll stay. New fronts that don't have matching rear seat just doesn't appeal to me. wewt 25% done installing my 2nd set of lowering springs. I didn't even need the spring compressor (since the springs I have on right now are so low). I did rent it anyway though just in case, though it's the wrong one, the one that goes inside the spring (impossible). I had to come online to check my old photos to see how the dot on top of each strut was facing.. after my alignment last time they weren't both facing the "normal" way.. but my alignment was totally awesome and stuff. Then I decided to change them to the "normal" way and my steering was off-center and crap.

they both should point back and to the outside.. but when you aren't on stock springs, shit gets moved around so I dunno.. mine was at 8 and 10 (passenger side and drivers side, respectively, looking into the engine bay) and my alignment was dead on. I'm going to be getting it aligned in a week or two anyway (actually.. crap I think the first autocross of the season is this saturday, so I'll have to get it aligned friday..

As an update, the s-techs are half on. I did both of the fronts (without getting the endlinks off.. because they won't come off without destroying them again.. just bought these last year), but the two big bolts at the bottom of the strut on the rear drivers side are being a pain. I sprayed them all down with some seafoam deep creep and I'm going to let it sit overnight and go at it with my impact wrench in the morning.. didn't think my neighbors would be happy about me using air tools out in the garage so late at night :P

Well I gave the P5 a good bath yesterday but with all the pollen floating around she needs another one. I need to get her waxed badly... ah the swirls!

K I got the last strut/spring combo off the car finally.

uh crap that nut on the top won't come off. for whatever reason I can't grab that big washer thing with the vice grips like I did on the other side?

I squirted some lube into my rear sway bar bushing on that side while I had everything apart though. grease gun is fun :)

Wow that looks great. I washed mine all up last night, but a bit dusty today. Why do people think that dust does not mean your car is dirty? I'll never understand that theory, they think your car has to have clumps off mud falling off it in order to be washed.

Had the tire mounted up on the replacement wheel and laid done a coat of Klasse all-in-one, followed by two coats of Wolfgang deep gloss paint sealant. Makes cleaning all those spokes a nearly hose-off operation. I then sacrificed a live chicken to appease the Curb Gods and said a prayer ...

OK - it was more like I had a couple grilled chicken tacos and a Corona w/lime (stash)

*edit - Oh yeah, I want to pass this along. Regardless of where you buy your PIAA wheels, PIAA USA will replace a damaged wheel at 40% retail (Cost) directly within two years of purchase! (yippy)

Maybe when I'm done. The rust/corrosion I'm dealing with is crazy! this is a part that has spent it's life basically on the interior of the car (the top nut on the rear strut).. wtf!

air impact wrench = nope
18" breaker bar/ratchet.. spins it, but the strut shaft spins too
electric impact wrench = ha!

If I have to drop the money on one new tokico hp, a dust boot (like 40 dollars last I checked), and a new strut mount with hardware.. it'll cost more for that than all four springs bah!

edit: can't forget the obligatory heat it with the propane torch until it's glowing and then try all of the above again..

also.. soaked in pb blaster overnight (literally submerged in it), again this afternoon.. tried seafoam deep creep.. I'm at wits end right about now. Luckily the weather might hold out (aside from rain and crap) and I can get to class and work with my Fuji (work is a 90 minute bike ride (at strenuous pace) away :( ).

Also.. the one on the other side of the car.. no problem whatsoever

Get a big pipe wrench to hold that thing from moving. Then use your breaker/ratchet to get the top guy off. The wrench is maybe $20 tops, at Sears or wherever...

ah you beat me to it.

I was about to say the same thing Chris. At the Spring Cleaning Meet my rear passenger side top nut wouldn't tighten down, so we had one person hold the nut thing in place with a wrench while another person used another wrench on the nut to get some traction. Try it!

Originally I kept it on when I installed my CAI so my parents wouldn't notice that I was modding my car (when the title was under their name). I've had it on ever since. All p5's came standard with foglights. I lost my fogs when I put the 2003.5 msp lip on my p5 - the msp lip makes the fog holes a little smaller, and thus I had to ditch my fogs.

yep. the washer is still.. yet the shaft spins freely.

I think at almost 82k miles, with three rochester winters, and this being the fourth time I've had my suspension apart like this, they've just given up on life. Luckily on the other side, the washer gave up when I was tightening it back down, and I managed to get it pretty tight.

Yeah - that flat spot rounds off pretty easy (ahem). Do you have a tap/die set? I had to slightly angle the washer and "wedge" it in the threads to get things apart last time. I chased the threads with a die and got them back into shape. I small triangle diamond file (and a good amount of patience/time) will get the same result.

Was it on your MSP or your pristine P5?

Yeah angling the washer felt like it was doing something, but it wasn't fruitful. (headshake)

the thing is, I knew last time I had my suspension apart (maybe 9 months ago) that the washers were getting rounded off, but I need to start writing these things down because I never remember. Or maybe I should just know that with the environment my Protege5 is driven in, I need to replace at least 50% of the nuts, washers, bolts, bushings, etc that I have to touch while doing any mod.

And yeah, I have a tap/die set, but it's the washer that is rounding off, not the shaft (at least that's how it was on the passenger side).

that's a good deal.. I think retail on the nuts (4 per wheel, assuming wheel locks used) is like twice that.

I have mcgards, but not their "tuner" lugs, just ones that manage to fit with my wheels. they use a 3/4" socket instead of the 21mm stock stuff, but the wheel locks I bought (also mcgard) use the 21 still.. it's annoying when putting the wheels on or taking them off.

Yeah, you'de be getting 20 triple chrome plated lugs and a neato installation socket - They are argueably the best out there. The came with my PIAA's but I ended up getting some spline-drive lugs. Summit has 'em for about 3X more - just trying to hook a brotha up and make some space.

Inner pad shaved to bare metal, outer pad looking almost new. I'm not sure exactly what's wrong yet, but I'm going to work with the caliper to make sure the piston isn't frozen. I'm really not in the mood to rebulid it, so I'm hoping I don't have to get into much with it. I've got it torn apart right now and I sprayed a healthy dose of PB Blaster on the piston. We'll see in the morning. I have to find a parts store near me that has the rear rotors in stock tho...

oh nice... i didn't know that u could get better rubber for the stock wheels... Nexen's, how much are those?

Factory says 130, but who cares what the car makes to the crank? The car won't go anywhere w/ just the crank. Knowing what it makes to the ground is a much more useful number.

And wutz isn't a word :p

We'll get it fixed today. This car is pretty easy to work on.
