other than the rough idle it's fine. it's weird if i get the rpms up to 600-700 w/ the gas pedal it stops.... i checked for a leak where the egr pipe meets the header and i saw nothing...so idk what else to do. i guess i can check by the spring bolds but i am pretty sure those were on fine.... i hope to get the valve done soon and if that doesnt work i give up

Honestly though, if you don't take it to a shop and plan on trying to fix it yourself, its all a matter of trial and error with a car, unless you know about cars very well.....did you move anything else when you put the headers in? Are both of your O2 sensors on correctly? You might want to try the fouler instead. It might be your O2 sensor. If your car sputters like that, it might be because your not getting the right mixture of air-fueland your O2 sensor might be reading that.....any check engine light yet? Because it does take a little bit to show like 70-100km to show.

i used the non foulers for the o2. no CEL. it's been like 400 miles and no CEL....

only thing i moved was the intake and played w/ the egr pipe to get it to fit. other than that, nothing. i'll resetting the ecu again and see how it goes i guess.

Got the DG grill from BKJT05 today. Need to work on getting it painted soon. As a bonus he threw in a smoked RockBlocker tail overlay and a pair of fiberglass eyelids too. Think I might cut the overlay to fit the Reverse light and turnsignal portion of my JDM tails. Thought that was kind of a nice gesture anyway.

If I didn't have four midterms (all lab midterms too) today, I'd be wrenching right about now. my g-stop brake line kit and plugs/wires came today, clutch line came yesterday.. parts pile grows larger

.. the only thing missing from the equation is my tein s-tech springs, but it's not like I actually need those. I need to just shoot my new rotor hubs with a coat of clearcoat and they are ready to go on.. dunno how much I'll feel like working on my car tonight after labs though.

well i found a leak on the 2nd o2 sensor, i seafoamed it again to check for leaks and found that one, fixed it...didn't do anything. i think i may have town mount(s).

i got some pix and videos of what it is doing, so here they are

engine shaking- hard to tell but if you watch the wires and coil packs you can see, its easier to see in person
http://s39.photobucket.com/albums/e159/sockerdood/Car%20Pics/?action=view&current=MOV01093.flv

i dont think the muffler is supposed to shake like this?
http://s39.photobucket.com/albums/e159/sockerdood/Car%20Pics/?action=view&current=MOV01095.flv

and attached pic of passenger side mount and front mount. would the mounts be causing all this hell?? i dont see why the mounts would cause the engine to idle at the 2nd tach and make the shifter and cabin vibrate like hell and also the muffler....?

changed my spark plugs (to NGK ZFR7F-11), changed my plug wires to the NGK wires, noticed that the magnet on one of my coil packs is bulging a little bit. That's no good :P

i've filled up w/ gas since and it's still doing it. the side mount looks like it may be torn? The last of the three. and the front looks like it has been pulled back...if you look at the 1st two pics it looks like the nut has been pulled back so that it's 3/4 the way down the mount instead of halfway like it should?

is the muffler moving like it is a bad thing? i've never seen anyone else's do that :(

mazda_pro5_2nr
04-11-2007, 09:02 PM
Mine does that too. I might need to get the Kartboy hangers. But I think the main reason is because the harness that held the exhaust by the downpipe is not there anymore, so really the only good support is your hangers for the exhaust.

amsgator

ok. i just didnt know if it was odd or not :-\

i've had some ppl tell me the mounts arent torn...they are made to do that ^^^ so i cant figure out WTF the problem is for the life of me. it all started after the header :( would a header alone cause the engine to shake slightly more and also the shifter to shake?

and my car is idling at the 2nd tach when it is completely warmed up...is that normal too?

whitemp5seattle

ah gotcha. i see what your sayin about how low the DG lip is. thats probably the one ill get since i dont wanna lose my fogs.
but the MSP lip does look really good on the P5

speaking of P5 i saw one on street tuner challenge about an hour ago on tv. it was gold, and done up REAL nice. i forget the club that built it though. but it was pretty cool to see a bitchin nice P5 on tv.

as far as what i did to my P5. i figured out why my brakes were grinding. the caliper mounting bolts and all the lug nuts were loose. how they were loose idk, cuz i know i torqued them all down good. but yea i tightened everything down really good, so everything is straight now.

Well I did it again.. forgot to check how-tos (don't know if there even is one) before I disconnected all the brake lines.. I don't have an open 17mm wrench to install the new lines :(

I'd ride my bike early in the morning to a store to buy one, but it'll be raining heavily all day tomorrow.

so the car is inoperable for now. all of the calipers are in the basement with paint drying, I'll probably shoot them with some high-temp clearcoat in the morning, then when that dries mount them to the car. I don't know how/if/when I'll be able to get to a store to buy that pesky wrench though.

I knew having primarily sockets in my tool collection was going to hurt me some day.

Anyone know the wrench size for the bleeder valve by chance? I better make sure I have that too :P

I'd try and use one of my adjustable wrenches but I actually can't locate either of them right now >_<

now it's way late, I gotta go sleep.. fun!

I havea set of open ended wrenches.. 8-16mm, a similar size range in imperial, and then I have 19-23mm as extras. I gues I just never needed 17 or 18 in a situation where I couldn't just use a socket.

I even gave my mountain bike a quick tuneup last night just in case the rain let up so I could ride to advance auto parts. .. looks like I'm gonna have to suck it up and just go. how close to the non-fouler should the O2 sensor be? I know when I did mine it was a tight squeeze and didn't leave a whole lot of room for air to get between the sensor and the non-fouler. Would that cause the rough idle? It didn't trigger a CEL though and wouldn't that trigger a CEL if there was a problem there?

I got one brake line off (rear passenger side), the others are being a pain in the butt. Oh and I got one side of the clutch line off. I guess I'll go work on the lines again (sprayed them with pb blaster) and then after tiring of that I'll slap all the calipers/pads/rotors on.

ractive header? I ran without the downstream O2 sensor for years no prob (CEL of course). Maybe it's a thing where having the sensor unplugged is a lot better than having it plugged in sending a bad reading?

aMaff
04-12-2007, 10:11 AM
if it was a bad reading the ECU would generally pick up on that. And I still maintain that there is no reason the car should run like that because of the DOWNSTREAM O2 sensor.

And no, rushed install. We (er...me) forgot to plug it back in (rofl).

Your supposed to drill through an entire fouler and then put that drilled fouler on top of the other. then your O2 on top of that and it should fit fine. Mine hasnt had a problem yet. Did you just drill half way or through an entire fouler(there should have been two when you bought them)?

also check to see that all the bolts are on the header. that might be another problem(not that you were dumb enough to forget one (confused) )

So...do you just ignore stuff that doesn't agree with what you think or what? Even IF you have a problem w/ the 2nd O2, it wouldn't be causing your engine to idle that rough.

i've filled up w/ gas since and it's still doing it. the side mount looks like it may be torn? The last of the three. and the front looks like it has been pulled back...if you look at the 1st two pics it looks like the nut has been pulled back so that it's 3/4 the way down the mount instead of halfway like it should?

Yes. The 2nd O2 sensor's main job is to just tell the ECU whether or not the primary cat is there. As I said, mine ran just fine without it even plugged in. The primary O2 sensor is the one that could cause some issues if it's not functioning properly.

i think we got it fixed yesterday but not positive. i only have a lil seafoam left to check.. :-\ i am gona put a nonfouler on it that isnt drilled since i believe i drilled both last time. hopefully that will fix the leak. not sure if the leak would cause the idle to go down as much as it has but i will see how it goes. crossing my fingers.

I think I'm gonna strangle my shitty stock brake lines... if I have to replace all the friggin hard lines just to get rid of the stock rubber lines, someone is gonna get a beating (likely the parts guy at the dealership). All the banjos on the calipers came apart just fine, but then where it transitions from rubber line to hard line I'm having a bitch of a time getting it all apart. I've rounded off most of the 10mm nuts on the end of the hard line at this point..

Oh and Maff.. the bleeder isn't 10mm, it is 8. I'm supposed to be at work right now, had to call in and say I broke something on my car yet again. no good.

this is so frustrating though. Words cannot describe the pain that winter in Rochester has inflicted on my car. Mazda did not engineer this car to hold up to cold climates where salt is used heavily, that's for sure.

rednecks_r_us

Where I live they don't salt the roads when it snows. Instead they cover the roads with sand and ground up lava rock. So you go through a windshield and have to repaint the front of your car every spring.

I'd much rather do that. Back home they use sand and damn it's just so much better.

So as it turns out, you absolutely positively aren't supposed to touch brake lines with a normal wrench.. there's my problem.

You're supposed to use a flare nut wrench specifically, and I'm not even sure what advantage that has? Hopefully I haven't rounded the nuts enough that I can't still go at it with a flare nut wrench ((rant)(rant) sears is 20 miles away, uggggh)

well i changed the spark plugs and the pcv valve and the shifter doesnt vibrate quite as much.... when the butterfly fell off (recall for previous dates the car was made) it was racked around and it appears to have damaged one of the plugs...so i changed them and it helped marginally. still idles at the second tach though, not sure if that's normal or not. didnt have time to clean the egr because i helped my friend do the rear motor mount on his MS3. hopefully do that soon...it doesnt really fluctuate much, it idles at the 2nd tach and occasionally fluctuates btwn the 1st and 3rd but nothing major...

my friend reoiled my filter when we put the header on.... maybe overoiled it?

Be glad you aren't in Arizona. 18 over the posted speed limit is over $400. Two more miles per hour and it would have been $460 and a trip to jail for criminal speed.

Chek with the court and see if they offer a traffic/driving school. Its usually about $100 and dismisses the ticket with no points on your license if you go.

I heard the same. My grandfather found out that the cruise control in his Caddy Deville (2002) worked at 125 while driving thru Montana.

I would have been screwed back in 2000. I had my license for about 8 months when I got nabbed for doing 83 in a 55. In all honesty, I didn't know I was going that fast. I was used to driving my 83 Rabbit diesel with 285k miles on it. 55 hp meant that you almost went wide open to do 60. I was driving my dad's Civic at the time and the speed crept up on me. I got lucky on that one though. School and work driving privileges only for 56 days and a total fine (including court costs) of $125.

silver stars will last about 6 months in a protege. I've gone through quite a few sets before going HID.

The silverstars in my 4X4 dodge have lasted for years with tons of off roading and hunting but not int he P5.

Yeah I was going to get the HID withink a month or two so it shouldnt be a problem. I just need some decent bulbs for the time being. What kind of HID kit do you have if you dont mind me asking?

In my truck, 3.5 years.. in protege, 3-6 months. I think H7 bulbs must just burn really hot due to the tiny capsule size but very high light output (for a halogen) so any slight imperfection in the glass or any tiny contamination of said glass ruins it.

ok, i need help from people... bill, patrick, chris, josh, mark, allen and anyone else, i'm looking your way guys... sorry for the long post, just wanted to make sure no detail was missed.

i bought brand new, from factory headlights for morrigan and installed them just before parking her (outside) for the winter. she was parked for about 5 months, then after i sold the 626, i started driving her again - this was the end of march.

she was dirty (yay winter :p) so i washed her a few times over the next few weeks before taking her in to have the clutch changed. didn't notice anything wrong with the headlights. about a week or so after having the new clutch installed, i took her into a local shop to have them put the clear 3m-type film on the headlights (what good are new headlights if you don't protect them from rock chips?).

the day i took her in for this, it was about -10C (about 15F is my guess) but it was dry out. the shop bay was quite humid but not all that warm - probably around 10-15C (mid to high 60's i think). i popped my hood thinking we were going to start right in on the headlights, but we ended up hosing down the car first. no biggie. i went to dry off the headlights and noticed that the passenger side headlight was foggy inside the lense all the way from the inner corner out to the edge of the hi-beam housing. wtf?? (rant)

i had the dealership order a new headlight under warranty (flawed seal from factory) and they want to split the charge on installing the new headlight - $90 out of my pocket since they did not originally install the lights and i don't have time/a place to install it on my own readily. plus, they don't want to let me have both headlights at once as they have to 'inspect' the faulty headlight. whatever.

since the incident at the shop (a few weeks ago), we've had both dry and wet/humid weather - very wet snow and even a little rain - and i have washed my car since and i haven't noticed ANY fogging inside the headlight. i even washed the car today (nice day, but still the wash bays get humid) both with the hood down and popped, trying to simulate how we washed it that day and no condensation.

i'm at my wit's end here. i really, REALLY don't want to
- pay the dealership for something i technically can easily do on my own;
- have them work on my car when i can't be there (i know NONE of the people in the service dept, and have never had anyone there work on my car before)
- since i can't replicate the problem, i don't know if i want to go through the first two points if i don't really need to
- buuuut if there truly is a faulty seal, i want it 'fixed' under warranty and not have it come back to bite me in the ass later on, you know?

what should i do? leave the headlight as is and not have it swapped? or pay the dealershit to change it over for me (even the thought of having them touch my car gives me the willies)...

tia :)

okay, so you can keep the one you have...no condensation since that first incident, or you can have the new one installed and pay $90....well if you don't have the time and or place to do this (it's really very easy...takes a while..but not hard to do!) then you need to pay them...you don't want to have it happen again and then have to start the ball rolling all over again! mark

First off Andrea, relax.

I hear ya about not wanting to pay the dealership for something you can do your self. ITs a factory light that fogged once. Hmm? IT doesn't take that long to get the headlight off. Too bad you couldn't just pop out your headlight and then go trade it out then reinstall the new one your self.

My right light foggs up too but I'm a redneck and just run with all my lights on and it ususally heats it up to disipate the condensation.

Wish I could be more help.

pardon my brevity, posting while driving. i say keep your headlight and when you have time, caulk the whole seal. the condensation is likely just from it being sorta warm and humid. my new headlight fogged a couple days after i got the car back, hasn't since. i gotta go my knee hurts from steering.. stupid two-thumb keyboard.

well it all calmed down yesterday after i changed plugs...one of them was pitted and in bad shape. i had the vtcs fall off (recalled on earlier models) and it apparently damaged the plugs when the screw fell in the engine. :( it still shakes a lil but a lot less, the engine itself isnt rocking like it was before nemore, just the shifter and floorboard. it's a lot better and i am thinking it's back to normal. the MAF helped a lil i think too, but since i did so many things at once i dont really know which did it :( but its better at least

Hmmmmmmmmm. You may be able to chalk this up to weird one-time atmospheric equalization of that housing. If it was my car ... I'd leave the light as is. However, I live in a desert - what do I know :P

mark, bill, chris, patrick, thanks for replying guys... i think i'm leaning towards leaving the headlight as is and once i move (and have oodles of time on my hands for up to 3 months while i can't work - oooo, lookie the stuff that's finally going to get done!) maybe take it out if i continue to have problems and try and fix the seal myself.

it's just so weird that the few times i've washed the car both before and after the incident, i didn't notice a thing - and i would definitely notice something like that. guess i'll make an appointment to get the 3m put on this headlight so it's protected to and she'll be good to go.

oh, btw - i know the hi-beam bulbs have that rubber boot on them to prevent moisture from getting into the housing; do the low beam bulbs have the same thing? my car doesn't that i can ever recall, a buddy's car doesn't, but when i was picking up a couple parts at a different dealership and asked them, they said it should and printed out a diagram showing this (and yes, it was a P5 headlight)... i'm confused.

Just wanted to give them a try, more curiosity than anything plus I had enough Canadian Tire money to make up the difference. lol

Kinda of like regular 5W-30 works but synthetic is better, maybe gas mileage will increase a bit or motor smoothness.

Got the smoked overlays on the tails. I did the passenger side first and messed it up a little bit. I had my heater going in the garage and I figured I would heat up the overlay a little bit to make it a little more pliable. Well, I heated it up a bit too much and made it a little too pliable........As I was wrapping it around the light I ended up stretching it a bit much and it got a little thin in the middle. Doesn't look terrible but I might have to take it off. I think I have enough left over to make another one. I didn't heat up the driver side one near as much and it turned out pretty nice. I noticed too that I really need to take off my emblems and re-paint em.

the neighbors are pretty cool...they think it's "nice" that we have all these people with the same interest in cars (mazda) and will drive from all over the place to come fix and clean their cars!! i guess as long as kyle didn't do any dounuts in the middle of the street(drive2) , everyone will be welcomed back next yr!!!

Got the smoked overlays on the tails.

Looks good! I wouldn't worry too much about how they affect the light. I have BlueBatmobile overlays and you can see my reverse lights and turn signals just fine (they passed PA inspection so..) I was also gonna suggest that your next mod be the Mazda6 wiper conversion.

Yeah, the back just looks so dated with that wiper on there. Might have to order it up online today..........Took a scotchbrite wheel to my header today to try and get all the burned on fingerprints off from the previous owner. Took care of a few rattles in the dash. Getting ready to prime and paint my eyelids now.

Yeah, it cleaned it up pretty good actually. Plus I didn't have to sit there and sand all day long. Power tools FTW !!

lol. i am stuck using steel wool i think. i dont wanna use sand paper since it leaves specs of residue and all and I cant find any scotchbright pads other than the heavy duty ones used for cleaning. :(

hm...never thought of that. have to check into it.

right now i'm in the middle of painting my badges black. one layer of black left and then clear and i'll be done w/ the two flying Ms. The protege 5 and mazda badge will have to wait I think because I have to go to work at 7 and still have some studying i have to do and lectures i have to watch. :(

Yeah, I just grabbed a scotchbrite wheel and threw it in the drill. Not too worried about the finish. It looks better than it did anyway. Plus, I still have been tossing around the idea of wrapping it anyway........

Proved my P5-T is faster than some RSX. I have no idea what was done to it aside from being lowered/wheels/exhaust. I wasn't trying to race but the guy was being a royal ass and instead of driving normally he tailgated me for about a mile (I was already doing 12 mph over) then tried to pass me as I turned at a stoplight (wtf?!) so I gunned it going around the corner in 2nd and walked him from there. For reference it was 2 AM and I'm in Blacksburg, VA = no people. All the non-college folk were asleep and all the college folk were passing out.

I got a CEL during the ELEVEN hour drive back to Rochester.. should have been 5 hours 30 minutes ugh snow/slush + summer tires + major, major car accident in MA holding things up.

As for the CEL.. I think the car just didn't like the extreme rain? I'll have to get the code pulled, but won't have time to do that until.. Tuesday evening at the earliest.

The car kept doing this hardcore sputtering if it went past like 4 or 5ish psi in 5th (like if I pushed the "resume" button after getting stuck behind a slow moving vehicle). I don't know if it was fuel cut or a misfire or what is going on. Car was still totally driveable, just kept it out of boost for the rest of the trip back (the CEL came on when I was about an hour from my destination).

thats one of my favorite things iv done. Totally changes the look of the back, and with tinted tails it looks awesome. I need to get new tails and get them re-tinted, the gaping hole in one of mine is killing me.

yea it looks sweet. i just hope it stays on w/ the rain and sand and all. i painted the hell out of it so i think it will b ok. 3 coats of primer, 4 coats of paint, and 3 coats of clear. plus i sanded off all the chrome before i painted it.
