is your intake on the throttle body properly

aMaff
04-04-2007, 10:11 PM
+1. When I had intake 'issues' my miata's idle was crazy. However, I know for a fact that the protege can run w/o the maf connected because of a Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor. I wonder if that only works when the MAF's not connected.... because if they worked in tandem, the MAP should make corrections for any leaks downstream of the MAF... but if it only worked w/ the MAF disconnected, then it wouldn't.

/end thinking out loud

I don't know man. The EGR valve was a bitch for me also. But I haven't had any problems with the idle at all.....what I am having problems with is now that the harness that connected the downpipe to the block is gone, my exhaust is shaking like hell when I go in reverse and also when I make some turns.....and it just pisses me off to hear that sound. Plus I think I might have a small air leak because I hear a whistle when I step on the gas. But I will tell you one thing....I can definately fell the power difference. :)

04-05-2007, 01:39 AM
I think it's really funny. Hardcore domestic car enthusiasts hate the GTO for many reasons. Many of which have to do with the name alone. It doesn't matter that the bloody car has 400 hp in the later incarnations...they hate it because of the name. Where as some of us import fans love the car because it has 400 hp in a rather affordable package. If I had extra loot, I'd probably jump on one myself.

s2000s are slow. w/out modding. they could have been faster.

aMaff
04-05-2007, 08:46 AM
Yes, extremely slow. That's why they run in the same SCCA stock class as C4 vettes and STis (both veritable turtles), and in a higher class than M3s, RX-8s and 350Z (also all extremely sluggish).

meh. it has about 150wtq, and 260whp, mostly in the low-mid range, great for track racing. but it really isn't all that fast. w/ a quaRTER mile in the mid 14s...that's about what a civic si runs..stock..the 2000 models.they're closer to 15 flat..but you get the point.

So about those Protege5s...

went out and started mine this morning, really wishing I had plugged in the engine block heater as it was 22F this morning.

My oil pressure holds steady at 80psi until it warms up for a few minutes so I had to just sit there in the freezing cold waiting. Then I had to get out of my ice/snow coated driveway, that was a lotta fun. um wow so Potenza RE750s really aren't too good in the snow haha. I nearly had to be pushed out of the driveway, I ended up needing to use my garage as a runway of sorts to get up to speed to make the hill. I was backing up the hill too, so extra weight on the front end. It's funny, as soon as the potenzas break loose on the ice it's all over, you gotta completely stop.. once they're rolling on the snow/ice dusting they have no traction whatsoever.

Luckily the roads were all clear, just not my driveway...

aMaff
04-05-2007, 09:21 AM
You think it's turbo related? I guarantee if you had your engine stock w/ an oil pressure gauge you'd see the same thing. You're not going to hurt anything, just don't beat on it when it's cold. This goes for any car.

aMaff
04-05-2007, 09:22 AM
For the record, my Miata sits right around that pressure when it's cold. Real oil pressure gauge stock ftw!

Yeah but at idle that high? If I were to just give a quick blip of the throttle up to like 2500rpms it hits over 100psi.. that can't be good for the turbo seals. I literally can't move the car at all for a couple minutes, even when it isn't cold outside. I'm just worried about blowing oil seals, not anything else really. If I let the car get low on oil then the pressure doesn't go so high at idle, but then it's even lower when warmed up and doesn't get high enough for me to feel ok spooling ze turbo.

aMaff
04-05-2007, 09:29 AM
Yes, at idle.

well a s2000 would be right up my alley too but its a bit pricier so its off the list. the G35 is the same way. The lowest trim 350Z starts at 27k while the others start at 30-33k so thats a big difference to me. Anyways I need to drive the cars first to see what I like.

if it is comin from where the header meets the midpipe you may want to check that the gasket is getting a good seal. that's the only other thing i can think of off the top of my head. is it a constant hissing?

Because it's marginally less fluid when extremely cold than a 5w30, and with less of the additives that allow an oil to be fluid at extremely cold temperatures? It's one of the two oil weights recommended in our owners manuals.

Against my better instincts, I decided to order a replacement for the PIAA sport mesh my wife curbed this past Dec. Turns out they've been discontinued (notcool). Ugh - I've contacted PIAA corporate directly for any leads. This marks the second time that my striving for uniqueness with wheels has bitten me in the ass.
Erm ... lame to quote myself, but I have a correction. PIAA has not discontinued the Sportmesh. PIAA corporate is allowing me to replace my curbed rim directly through them AT COST (!). All I can say is that I have never had such a personal response and show of effort from a corporation of this size. I'm stoked - hopefully bringing curb-feelers back will be like bringing sexy back ...

Took me 10 minutes to install them. They work and look awesome.

my parts pile is getting larger.. sadly the extremely key components still haven't arrived yet.. the brake lines from protegegarage, clutch line from *************, the s-techs and all the rubber bushings and such from onlinemazdaparts.com.

I have so far:
- ATE super blue brake fluid
- brembo blank rotors, all four corners.
- Hawk HPS brake pads
- can of silver brake caliper paint (though I think I'll just do black again, but who knows the ricer in me might come out again and do silver hehe)
- can of seafoam
- a few cans of brake cleaner
- a can of aircraft remover (way too make coats of paint on the calipers so I gotta clean them up)
- a grease gun to grease my AXR clunk fix bracket rear bushings (yay grease fitting on bushing bracket)
- some MAF cleaner (I'm assuming it's just a general electronics parts cleaner just with a higher price haha)
- my SLS side motor mount

I'm saddened that the rotors don't have the rotor hub and vented edge painted black like pictures I've seen (and my current brembo rotors) suggested they would. Now I have to paint the rotor hubs and the edges black, which means I have to tape off a circular piece ughhh. plus the fact that it's in the 20s outside so I can't paint in the garage or outside, and if I paint in the basement the ventilation system quickly fills the house with toxic paint fumes.. I could turn off the heat but then we'd freeze to death again.

As of right now the only thing I can install on the car is the side motor mount, and I think I will even though it's so darn cold outside. I have the day off from work, so might as well :P

Whats seafoam?

seafoam is your god.

http://www.supermotors.org/getfile/217841/fullsize/Sea%20Foam%20Can.JPG

you suck it into your intake manifold via a vacuum line (one of the lines from the PCV works even on boosted cars) and it kinda steam cleans the head, removes carbon deposits, etc.

You can also use it in the gas tank, in your oil (!!), etc. If you use it in your oil, I'd definitely add it like the day before you're going to do an oil change anyway.

No, it's good to run the car a few miles to get the stuff through the motor, but not TOO long, as it dilutes the oil.

thanks for reminding me about yet another thing I need to deal with.

oh and is the weather just so darn peachy in socal that you can drive a car with no wipers? :P

my windshield leaks badly on the a-pillar when it rains. It did it right after it had been installed, but I was 6 hours from the shop who did the install so I couldn't deal with it right away. It stopped for a while, but now post-accident it does it a lot worse than before :'(

hopefully insurance covers it including fixing the rust damage that'll obviously be hidden underneath. Oh and hey, the body shop that ruined my life is an approved local glass shop through my insurance company.. do I dare give them another chance? now that they know I don't accept shit work from them I think they'd do a decent job haha. Sadly they're still the most trustworthy body shop in the area :(

Seafoam - Interesting. I"m doing an oil change tomorrow but I'm not sure if the local stores carry that in Canada. I'm curious though if you use it to break down deposits in your oil and to sort of clean the inside of the motor, would it not break down the new oil since it would be impossible to get all of it out of the motor when drained.

Big difference between 14 and 8 and I doubt rednecks cool ride is riding on anything less than 16's. But thats a pretty light wheel at even 14lbs. A 17 inch rim at 18 pounds is considered light for a regular forged rim.

I need to take a scale with me to discount Tire next time I get tires. They are the ones that told me my rims only weigh about 8 lbs. They are 16 x 7 and I have no idea what the offset is. The right rear tire rubs the inner fender in the corners.

HMMMM

so where is the rubber piece that goes on top of the spring? I ordered 2 #15s but yeah that's the metal piece.. where the heck is the rubber pieces.. there's totally a big rubber piece up in there.

I don't know, but I tried to order the upper spring cap for the rear suspension based on the analogous diagram and got the rubber part that goes between the spring and the cap. Maybe this info will help?

Well, I said "to hell with it" and despite the weather I installed the CP Racing STB. I wish I had a camera to takes some pics because it looks really nice - I would say it was worth the loss of cruise control (for now). Anyway, I would say it really tightened up the front end - I found myself breaking traction in the front going over bumps while turning. Should be fun once I really get to test her out...

what are you gonna do about the cruise control?
I still have it - the control line is actually still in the car just zip tied away to hold it in place. Eventually I will get around to making a custom bracket and put it back in close to where it was originally but probably lower. Man, the STB was a PITA to install though. I felt like I had to play with and adjust everything to make it fit. Definitely worth it though, now if only it were red and not silver...

they can fix things stuck in your tire? I installed my mp3 rims today with kumho ecsta mx's and I noticed there were a few spots where there was some metal fragments in the rubber...

also, anybody know what psi I should inflate the tires to? they're 205/40/17

Yes there are a few ways to patch a tire provided the hole is in the tread and not close to the sidewall. What do you mean by metal fragments?

As for tire pressure, start at 30lbs cold and play with it from there. Size of the tire doesn't change the tire pressure.

I used to run 34lbs but finding the ride to stiff and now at 31lbs.

Kansei

I think I know what he means by things getting stuck in the Ecsta MX.. it's such a soft rubber that it is literally sticky.. mine got little tiny pebbles and stuff stuck right into the tread blocks.. not between the tread blocks like on most tires because the MX has massive tread blocks

cool...I'll play with it in the 30s I guess...

as for the metal fragments - it looks like he drove through a minefield and took some shrapnel in the tires or something lol. there's one piece of metal that looks like it's almost a centimeter long, maybe 1mm thick? but it's right in one of the tread blocks...I was gonna pull it out, but it might be the only thing keeping the air in!

well i got my header in the other day and ever since my idle has been really rough, it vibrates the car like crazy. I dont know if it's just because of the header that it's doing it or what. i dont see a leak on the egr pipe and the nut went on by hand for a while so I don't know what else could be causing it. I know my egr valve needs cleaning but this isnt a drop and rise, it's just an idle at about 450-500 that makes the car vibrate pretty decently. if i get the rpms around 700 or so it stops vibrating. it's weird. :(

DING!!!!

If your header caused an intake leak, you'd have MUCH bigger problems. Like...you'd be in a paralell universe where that kind of thing is possible lol

(assuming it didn't get close enought for the heat to eat through the piping, which in this case, I HIIIIIIGHLY doubt)

Didn't some1 say intake leak early last week?

well i took the intake off and put it back on, the only thing i noticed was that the coupler that was on the throttle body wasnt quite all the way on. because the little clamp crimped the coupler, apparently when mazda put it back on after fixing the intake manifold they didnt put it on all the way and there was a 2 mm gap maybe, possibly closer to 1 between the manifold and coupler being closed all the way around? but why would it have not started shaking before i did the header? that's the only thing that has me. i havent checked to see if it's fixed because it raining and i need to go to the store, so when it stops i'll go and see what happens. :-\

other than the rough idle it's fine. it's weird if i get the rpms up to 600-700 w/ the gas pedal it stops.... i checked for a leak where the egr pipe meets the header and i saw nothing...so idk what else to do. i guess i can check by the spring bolds but i am pretty sure those were on fine.... i hope to get the valve done soon and if that doesnt work i give up
