does anyone actually clean that? lol I mean, I like to get my car clean as much as the next guy, but I don't have THAT much patience lol

I clean mine when I swap from summers to winters and back. Not a Josh clean, but to remove all dirt and the tar nodules that build up over time. Helps with getting a good tire balance.

I do that on the 16" wheels for my Honda. Good thing I did because I found a slight crack in one of them. I'll have to figure out something to do with that.

I hear ya there! We're a little warmer, probably close to 50. I'm out there taking care of the essentials that the previous owner didn't do on my P5. I'm also working on doing the top of the grille body color instead of black.

I just went outside and um it feels a hell of a lot warmer because it's actually sunny outside. Somewhere someone looked it up before and Rochester only has like 60 sunny days every year >_<

Time to go shovel the driveway since it's sorta melty anyway and then wash some wheels. I should probably clean the garage too since *crosses fingers* my car might be back in it tomorrow :) :) :)

Back in WWII, we (being the USA) built a munitions plant in the 2nd cloudiest area of the continental US. It just happens to be Ravenna, OH, which is about 5 miles from me. I fully understand what you mean about the rarity of sunny days.

Very nice SATimko.. should have come that way from the factory in north america IMO. My new front grille should be at the body shop on Monday so they can paint that piece up (and give me the car without the top piece for now). I could have had them order the MSP grille pre-painted but I decided to just get the P5 grille and have them paint it so I could be sure it would match.

I'll ask them about painting a couple interior bits to match the silver as well (like the shifter and radio surrounds that I painted sunlight silver but didn't do a good job on).

I need to see about doing the shifter interior piece. It's highly scratched up. I don't knwo what the PO did to this car, but I'm convinced it was never taken care of at all. Can't wait to see yours when it's done.

Today I bought 8 quarts of redline synthetic motor oil, the Mazda6 rear wiper conversion kit, and a CX-7 antenna from the cool new misc parts catalog on onlinemazdaparts.com. It's the best price I've found for redline oil, 7.95 a quart vs I think 8.95 at Summit!

They don't have time to even look at the car until thursday... I'm trying desperately to source the intake air temp (not the IAT.. the little black plastic one "air charge temperature sensor" or whatever the proper term is) locally so I can get my car back.. this rental is costing me out of pocket over 60 dollars a day, and that's after my insurance pays their 50 dollars a day...

Kansei
03-13-2007, 01:20 PM
check your IC piping. I didn't bother checking it because 1. it was fine for the first couple miles and 2. the car won't start.. at all, as I said before. The starter cranks and nothing else happens.. no combustion, the tach never moves, etc.

03-13-2007, 01:24 PM
Did it stall while you were accelerating? I've seen them blow off more or less randomly. If it's at the shop and they'll let you look at it, check all the wiring harnesses, wires, etc, just make sure they hooked everything back up right.

Stupid work blocking the buttons. No edit ftl.

Meant to include that I saw it happen on Velocifero's MSP. Blew the hot pipe off the intercooler and it wouldn't start until we got everything hooked back up.

Kansei
03-13-2007, 01:29 PM
Just wouldn't start at all though? I can drive back to the shop where it is to check it out, that's no problem.. but I did open the hood and checked the following:

intake air temp sensor (broken)
MAF + wiring for MAF
coolant temp sensor
sensor thing near the coolant temp sensor (little black box)
plug wires
crank position sensor
cam position sensor
all three oxygen sensors
radiator fan plug
gas level (at more than 3/4 of a tank)
CEL: nonedidn't check:

IAT
VTCS/VICS solenoids
vacuum lines
charge pipes

aMaff
03-13-2007, 01:39 PM
Do you have the MSP ecu? I know for a fact the P5 will run without a MAF in a seriously degraded mode. I know because when I trimmed some excess off my intake, we forgot to plug the IAT and the MAF back in, and it ran in 'limp' mode. We have that wonderful Mitsubishi MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor as a backup / to work in tandem with the MAF.

And yes, his car wouldn't start at all until we got the pipe hooked back up.

Kansei
03-13-2007, 01:44 PM
So that's what that mitsubishi sensor is hooked into the vacuum system near the cruise control???? I've always wondered :D

Yeah, MSP ECU. I'm gonna go write down phone numbers for junkyards and then head over to the shop that has my car to see about the piping.. I couldn't really check on the piping aside from what I could access from under the hood... didn't have tools on me.

How much snow/ice driving have you done? I can't stand driving FWD cars on snow. Turn the wheel, car keeps going straight, what are you gonna do?? With a RWD car you can give it some gas and get the car to rotate nicely :)

oversteering on snow? get off the gas, use the wheel to correct if needed. Understeering? you gotta straighten out the wheel or get off the brakes or something.. sometimes giving it gas helps, not always.

A RWD car with snow tires is awesome. Yeah the miata is lightweight, but you can put 100lbs of sand in the trunk (if you can fit the two tubes of sand lol) and it'll help a lot.

nice nice. I know with my roommate's RWD volvo, he needed 80 pounds on the passenger side of the car because his car has a bad weight bias left/right not front/rear. I guess they didn't feel like really making it a LHD car so things like.. the gas tank is totally on the left side of the car, some other stuff all sits on the left side, turbo is even on the left side. His clutch-based limited slip is pretty much worn out (230k miles on it) so without sand bags on the passenger side of the trunk, the right rear wheel would always slip and he'd get stuck even trying to get out of the driveway (with brand new Blizzak REVO-1 tires)

my car is making a really screwed up noise...it's making a loud clicking noise everytime i start it and push the clutch. i am supposed to be going to Sebring tomorrow too and idk what to do. I am going to mazda tomorrow morning at 7 hoping they can see what's goin on, hopefully i just need a new clutch and its not the tranny. it stalled out for no reason while rolling to a stop sign, and i restarted it and it started that really loud clicking. it sounds like a really loud wheel of fortune spinning.

previously it would make a noise every time i took my foot off the accelerator, like a grinding noise kind of but pretty high pitched. and i think whatever that was finally went. :( i hope i can get it fixed so i can still leave tomorrow

Clutch clicking when you press it? You need to lube a part. Search for "clicking clutch" and you'll find pics of the part.

It's an easy fix. (burnout)

It's hard to say. My clutch used to make a clicking noise when I pushed the pedal. Then I greased the part that moves when you press the pedal (in the front, under the hood) and clicking went away. Many people had this issue. I found that it needs to be lubed periodically.

Your problem might be something else, but it sounded like my problem.

But you're saying the black metal piece that is pushed by the master cylinder needs to be lubed from time to time? Where?

I'm not sure that it is a requirement, but it gets rid of the clicking for me. I did not do it myself, but my mechanic showed me the part that is under the rubber boot. He put grease there under the boot--the part that is "compressed" by the little black lever.

This link explains it better! :D

I will go ahead and say ditto to amaff on this one. The ol loose screws on the intake manifold have hit more than a few here on the forum. You are one of the lucky ones that is covered by warranty/recall. Mine fell into neither of those 2 categories and Mazda wouldn't cover anything for me. Anyway, it's not really too much of a problem as long as they check out the cylinder/s with a borescope and make sure it didn't score the cyl walls too badly. Did yours not run like total dogshit when you heard all the noise ? I don't recall what you posted.....Mine was a total mess when it first went. ........

when i called earlier they were taking the valve cover off and they said that tomorrow once the part gets here they will install it and put the motor back together, so it sounds like they checked that as well.

I don't recall what you posted.....Mine was a total mess when it first went. ........

They're Eurolite Xenon Fusion's. So far, I really like them! Nice and white, brighter than stock, but not overly bright that I know they'll be blinding to other drivers.

Man, I'd forgotten how much of a pain it can be to change the P5 headlights. :)

my baby is in right now with her guts ripped out... :) she's getting a new clutch, flywheel, rear motor mount, the egr has been cleaned, oil change (amsoil), and a top-up of tranny fluid (redline).

i wanted to do the udp, timing belt, and intake cam but i haven't received some of the parts yet and my income tax refund wasn't quite as much as i was hoping for :( also waiting to be installed once i move is the p&p'd MP3 IM and MP3 ecu (should be receiving that in a month or two, yippee!)

it's the street clutch from ACT - any feedback on how that will feel compared to the stock one for driving?

Yep, I would also ask them. They didn't need to take the valve cover off to put a borescope down there and have a look. It only takes a second to have a look around the cylinder. I would also make sure they did a compression test on the cylinder that had the screw in it.

Ahhhh, OK. You would have noticed if you lost screws. I think in pretty much every case the screws got thru the intake mani and out onto the top of the piston and crushed the bottom the spark plug instantly causing it to run like total shit and throw a check engine light. Luckily with mine it spit the screw just after it crushed it, I regapped the plug to check it out and it ran fine. I still had it towed to the dealer cuz I wasn't totally sure I wouldn't mess something up........

question guys:

Have you guys heard of any bad reviews for any of the following:

POLARG, LUMINICS OR MTEC?

I need to get new bulbs but not sure which to get? Then there are NOKYA but not sure which bulbs to go for. Anyone have any ideas or opinions?

I have been searching for reviews but can't come up with any results.

Its just a tad bit stiffer than stock. You know a little bit stiffer is always good (wink)

You will notice the difference for the first few shifts after that it just becomes natural and you'll for get about the difference.

To me the stock clutch felt way to spongy and my ACT feels just right. A friend of mine drove it and he says it feels just like the clutch in his MSP.

I have been searching for reviews but can't come up with any results.

Here's a bad review of Luminics:

I had them (the ultra-white H7s, a couple months later one exploded spraying glass all over the friggin headlight housing (had to pull the bumper and headlight, bake the headlight, open it up, get the class out, sand the housing, and repaint (since the burning glass had damaged the finish). At that time, I checked the other bulb and it was bulging.. I really think that it might be an issue with the compact H7 design. I think maybe the colored coatings trap too much light in causing the glass to get ridiculously hot.. then if the glass has any imperfections, BAM.

No one seems to be able to get even Sylvania Silverstars (that have a really light coating) to last very long.

If you want my opinion, get the Osram Silverstars or some other NON-US high output bulb (stock wattage though). The Osram Silverstars don't have the dumb blue coating on them (the Sylvania silverstars do).

I think www.powerbulbs.co.uk is where I bought osrams from back in the day.

If you aren't satisfied with the osrams, then you can upgrade your headlight wiring harness (there are some basically plug and play kits for doing so, just search online for "heavy duty h7 headlight wiring" or something along those lines) and get some Osram 65 watt bulbs, or upgrade to HIDs and risk having an HID bulb that doesn't generate light in the same position in the headlight housing which would cause glare and a poorly focused beam pattern.

Cuz I've heard good things about MTEC bulbs....but not sure on the life of the bulb.
i've had the mtec blue cap bulbs and it burnt the wiring connectors after a few months. so after i changed to the hd connector it burnt that too. this w/ stock wattage. also one of the bulbs started to get loose from the frame so i contacted the dealer, said to mail bulb and original box to taiwan or hong kong i kinda forgot which one, for xchange. was supposed to be free but shipping was a lot and i never saw the bulb again. so i got 3 mtec bulbs sitting on the side with osrams silverstars in the car. to recap, mtecs looks great, last long but good chance your connectors won't, even if bulbs go out don't expect them to honor out of country warranty. ps osrams last long and my connectors too.

Go HID!

But to actually answer your question, Luminics are dangerous to drive with. You can't see crap with them. This is why they say "off road or show only" on the package. The whole 130W thing is BS.

The same is true of all colored bulbs--reduced light output...

thx Bill... and yeah, you're right. initially it was a little bit to adjust too, but probably when i drive the car tomorrow i won't notice a thing. so far, i'm loving it.

but... (don't you always hate those?) while idling at lights, etc, this evening my idle was bouncing anywhere from 1200rpm to less than 200 - to the point where i had to give it gas or it would stall out on me. on a few occasions, it would hold steady at about 400-600, but not very often. any ideas for that? could cleaning the egr have knocked loose some carbon and it's just working it's way though the system? it wasn't warm today, but it wasn't cold either, and when i initially started her at the shop and let her idle for about 5 minutes prior to leaving, there was no problem at all.

i'm going to keep an eye on things while i drive her this weekend, but hopefully i don't have to take her back in on monday. any suggestions on things i can easily check myself (no jack/stands atm) would be appreciated.

yeah, i'm pretty positive it has nothing to do with the clutch or flywheel... i'm thinking i might give the seafoam a try here and see if that helps anything, but i am hesitant to do it right now until i figure out if the egr is the cause of the bouncing idle (ie, not something deeper in the car that may not be hooked up right, etc)
