joshp5 - looking good! I hear ya on the rain, it is pouring here right now. On the brighter side I did notice another c-red P5 sitting in a driveway on my way home from picking my daughter up!

Hey Rob.....oval looks good to me! :P But I am not biased or anything...haha

Regarding the exhaust, I went with the round tip because it fills the cutout well. On the other hand, the oval one looks more modern--just wish it fit the cutout better.

There's another red P5 in my apartment complex. Turns out to be a good benchmark against which I can compare my mods! When I was transitioning from my Miata, I lined up both my Mazdas next to the other P5 just for kicks.

Yessir that is my baby. I picked up my tail lights used off of a member here on the forums. That is actually a good price on ebay for them. I have seen them with a bin for $96 plus the $20 or so shipping. IMO they would look good on the yellow and better with painted headlights.

Kansei
03-02-2007, 12:21 PM
You have the 2003.5 MSP axleback (wide oval) made by racing beat (but says "mazdaspeed" on the tip)

others have the 2003.0 MSp axleback (round tip, also the same as what was on the Protege MP3 if I recall correctly) also made by racing beat.

Some have the Mazdaspeed Axleback, which has a 4"ish round tip with a rolled edge, a tiny muffler canister, and a loud sound. It wasn't made by Racing Beat or Mazdaspeed, was made by Bosal or somethin like that. It says "Mazdaspeed" on the tip, and was offered as an OEM accessory for the P5 from the dealer "sport muffler".

Then many have the Racing Beat catback made for the P5, which is a full catback exhaust and says "Racing Beat" on the tip. It's a slight oval and has the inner and outer tip design.

Well I drove from Blacksburg, VA to Virginia Beach. About 100 mi in I get some weird jerking/hesitation while under load and then guess what, CEL soon follows. So I limp the next 200 mi back home with no real problems - I just can't really accelerate because the car will start to jerk. Well today I take the P5 into the shop to get the clutch and flywheel installed - no problem there and they also read the CEL. The CEL was caused by "voltage exceeding max MAF" so my MAF is reading way too much air and is going into limp mode everytime I try to accelerate. SO the mechanic suggests the MBC could have caused this because my boost was building quicker than before and therefore might have been overloading the MAF. So I remove the MBC but the CEL and hesitation are still there. I come back home and reset the ECU and inspect the MAF. Well somehow there was water inside my pipes and the MAF - I don't know how because I don't have any leaks (vacuum is fine). So I pull out the MAF and leave it out in the sun to dry and then reinstall it. So far no CEL but I did hit one spot of hesitation but so far it seems a little better than before. HOWEVER, my mechanic also mentioned that there was a "small" oil leak coming from my oil feed fittings. I think "small leak, ok no big deal" well I get back from a quick drive to test the MAF and look under the car to find oil EVERYWHERE and the dipstick was reading "L" so yeah, "small leak".

So what did I do today/yesterday? I found out that I need to buy all new oil fittings, 4 quarts of oil and possibly a new MAF. Yay (notcool)

i didn't want to risk screwing up (painting the housing in the headlights), so i did it the easy way - traded with a local guy who had an 03 and wanted the chrome housing :D

i can get the headlights for you brand new, but they're not cheap...

i am SO happy driving my baby again (wiggle) i knew i missed her, but i didn't realize how much. think there *might* be an issue with the wheels since the steering wheels seems to shimmy a little at highway speeds so i'll monitor that for a couple days; if there is, i'll just take it back to the shop - yay for free balancing.

tomorrow i pick up my rockblocker-esque covers for my headlights. been driving around for a couple days now with the brand new headlights, so i want to get them covered ASAP so they don't get chipped. then it's off to the audio shop to get a lesson is how my HU works, lol

Then I drove the 3 miles back from the body shop with the e-brake pulled up as hard as I physically could on the G5. I've been back for 5 minutes and the brakes are still smoking hahahaha (I really wonder why they charge extra fees for young people to rent cars???)

It really looks like the racing beat catback, but didn't you say it didn't have an inner and outer and that it was fully rolled?

is it possible that there's a fifth racing beat / mazdaspeed muffler??

Does anyone know if water will screw up a MAF? Just drops not totally submerged? Somehow water got into my intake track although I have no leaks anywhere (perfect vacuum) (eyeballs)

Going into paint in it's current state pretty much on monday, then getting all the sheetmetal put on and going back into paint on Wednesday. The new front bumper got painted today, I saw it but not up close because it was baking in the paint booth (the paint booth can fit 3 cars!).

So yeah it'll be done being worked on Wednesday, might have to bake the whole car on Thursday and then it's getting detailed and I should have it back Friday :) I already e-mailed my boss to tell him that I'm leaving work on Friday as soon as I get word that the car is done :)

Oh and the guy is trimming some stuff to get my intercooler pipe to fit better.

looks nice. what did you use to paint the dash and all? or are they completely new pieces?

Thanx for the compliment, i used Duplicolor High Performance Vinyl/Fabric Spray Yellow. And it is all original pieces, either removed or taped off to paint. And i noticed your comment regarding altezzas and being flamed. Just a word of advice...if you want something on your car do it, regardless of others opinions, after all it is your car and it should be your vision, plus people will respect your decision if you are behind it. ive had many people compliment my car and many others flame it, but in the end it just means that people are taking time to look at my car and leave feedback. ok im done with my crappy philosophy corner....CHEERS!! Hope that visit made u feel better... I got the coil today, I had to get it at the dealrship since no one else carried them, it cost me $108 for one coil, Napa had them listed at $18...(bang)

Bruce you're a machine! I adjusted the illuminas down 1 notch all around. The ride was a little harsh (fun for a while, but not ideal). I'm now at 3f / 4r. We'll see how I like it. And yes, that means I had to pull the interior out of the rear, and disconnect the seat belts, etc etc lol. It's possible to do it w/o pulling the interior, just a HUGE pain, and would take abt 5 times as long.

next time you do that - or when you have time - pull out the seatbelt brackets and drill a hole through them. this way you can get at the strut top to adjust it without pulling everything out. that's what i did, and it works like a charm!! still have to pull the plastic interior piece that the belt threads through off, but that's minor. if you wanted, i supposed you could drill a hole through that too... (dunno)

I thought abt that too, but then I'd have had to go out to get a punch and some metal drill bits, niether of which I had, and all of which it would take me longer to to get than it took for me to just take everything apart lol

Nice curve! Wow. Interested in your mods as well.

First off that nice smooth power curve is not from a Protege or P5 ECU. I have a MP3 ECU.

Performance mods:

MP3 ECU.
NOLOGY Hotwires
RACTIVE 4-1 header.
Jet-Hot ceramic coating inside & out of the header.
Mental Addiction Motorsports high flow catted midpipe.
MAGNAFLOW cat back exhaust.
FIDANZA light weight flywheel.

The last time I ran the dyno my max whp was 116.5. The only additions were the nology wires and the flywheel for an additional 2 ponies on the ground.

The numbers seemed a little low for everybody. Tony's Cobra usually runs around 450 whp and he was only at 430 to the rear wheels. Jay did a dynopac tune the night before with his new piggyback ecu and CP-E headers and was at 202 on his 6 wagon. At the shop on Saturday he didn't hit 190 on the dynojet. Tim with his white 6 was 182 whp and the last time he dyno'd with me he was at 184 whp.

So with that in mind I could possibly be at 120 whp. Next on my adgenda is custom ground cams and an MPI piggyback.

Mazda claims that the P5 is a 130 horsepowered car and I will have 130 to the ground and be all motor. Screw that 95 whp crap from the factory.(ricer)

Took the 8 out for a 7:30am Sunday drive. Almost nobody on the roads, sun was bright but chilly air. Just cruised around local twisties and jumped on the highway for a quick jaunt to have my 120mph speed fix. That was in 5th gear and I really did not want to get in trouble so I backed off quick. Was a beautiful start to a most eventful day at my house.

on Sunday, I took a ride out to cape cod at the asscrack of dawn to go hang with Astral and the NEPOC guys to do some suspension work. We changed the struts on Chyler's car, then did the struts and springs on mine. Espiler and Tokicos baby! I had to leave before they finished Chyler's new muffler.

Yeah, she actually came to the meet and was checking everything out. she liked the lowered look better (who doesn't?). But don't worry, deals on springs pop up all the time.

I had 97k on my stock struts/springs, and holly crap it's like night and day. I still have to tighten up a front endlink that keeps clunking, but the car handles so well. I had a 3 hour ride back home after the install and it was great. lots of highway on ramps and going through Providence, then backroads in CT. it was great. I can't wait to go out after work tonight.

I drove to deep creek, Md to go snowboarding this weekend, and got the p5 mighty dirty

i also lowered it about 2 weeks ago, and got my new wheels in yesterday. They will probably be on in a month or so.

Might be a good time to upgrade to HID's. I went through 3 or 4 sets halogens before I said screw it.

Have started thinking of that but my worry is with the PS light retainer clip being broke. The plastic piece that the screw screws into which holds the clip tight is broke. Bulb has some play (last I tightened it down was in November when I painted my lights) but it didn't seem to affect the pattern at all. I am not sure if the bulb blew due to movement or from me accidentally touching it when I removed it to paint the lights. If it is from movement I don't want to keep blowing HID bulbs.

Thought I had it tight enough and I could save some $$$ but looks like I should pick up another PS headlight and be done with it.

Hid bulbs don't have filaments so they won't have the same issue, but hmm..

I'll check with the body shop to see if they still have my "slightly damaged" (smashed) headlight.. if they do, I'll see what I can grab from it.

I have some 18" mazdaspeed 3 rims I might be selling at the end of March when I get back home from work if you're interested in mazda3 rims

Descided not to put these on huh? Why? Did you ever paint them like you were talking about doing??

I got some mp3 rims with summer tires for free (almost). So I'm just gonna go with those...that way I don't have to buy tires for the MS3 rims...which means the MS3 rims are up for sale! I'm gonna start a thread when I get home in a few weeks

Doh...hid noobness FTL...

So your PS light got hit as well? I thought the damage was contained on the DS. If your PS is in good shape, how much would you want for it? I forget but you did use a satin black when painting it right? If so, then that would save me some oven time. haha

I'm not sure what the going rate would be for these...just did a search and looks like they sell from anywhere between 200 and 300 a set for stockers...

ur still not supposed to wax ur car for atleast 30 days.....its has to do with the paint having time to dry fully....and not being exposed to syenthetic waxes...or ur paint will bublle up and eventually u will need another paint job....if i were you i would wait atleast 30 days before waxing the car again.

plus most places (body shops) go ahead and clean the car up and make it shine real well before they give it back to ya.

i have had my car in for paint 2 times and each time they always tell me not to wax the car for 30-60days....but its safe to wash...just no wax

Kansei
03-09-2007, 12:02 AM
A new car with a factory paint job can be waxed the moment it is rolled out of the manufacturing plant. Cars that have factory paint jobs are cured at much higher temperatures, sometimes as high as 300 degrees in special baking ovens. At a factory level, the car goes through the painting and baking process without any of the rubber, plastic, and cloth components installed. This is why they can expose the car and it's fresh paint to such high temperatures. These high temperatures and special paints used at the factory level insures the paint is fully cured by the time the car is completely assembled.
my car was baked at those temps, I saw the hood, fenders, bumper, and doors in the oven. I'm not going to wax it right away anyway since it's about 15F outside so it wouldn't even work, but yeah...

Exactly! The hood closes or rest no different than stock position. I made it using existing holes on the car so it can not be messed up in the insallation process. It's a no brainer.

Oh yeah I agree. My thing is that w/ carbon fiber hoods I can just imagine someone trying to close the hood on the opposite side of of the shock and it cracks or something. It may not happen but either way it's just a safety factor.

Took off the bumper and replaced the PS lo-beam. Hopefully I will get the wiper conversion done this afternoon (time permitting).

why did you have to take the bumper offf?

Swapped out the winters for the summers, adjusted the rear brakes, removed 2 heat shields from the exhaust that were rattling.

Long story short - Bruce and I swapped the PS retainer clip to the DS and used my home-made (ghetto) paper clip to hold down the PS bulb. Since that requires the use of a screw driver there was no way I could hold both the bulb and paper clip in place while trying to tighten the screw with the other....not with 'all that room' (LOL) that Mazda gave us!

But it sure was a breeze taking the bumper off....thanks again to the NEPOC crew. (first) Took me about an hour and a half and that included playing chef to my son for breakfast.

Got her up and running yesterday - had to replace the POS Autometer brass fitting, hopefully this one will last longer. For some reason the MAF issue has magically cured itself but I now have an extra just in case.

Anyhow, washed her today so she was nice and clean for about an hour - pollen is all over the place. Either way, feels so good to have the P5 back up and running. New clutch and flywheel feel awesome though. Fidanza + Exedy ftw!

It looks like it would be really easy to access that on your wheels.

And yeah, Josh isn't the only one
