finally got a chance to work on my P5 today. I put the Biata away for the winter, so my focus is back, so I got her washed, new plugs, put some of that goo on the battery terminals, going to change the oil in my buddy's heated garage (2thumbs), and some new sliverstars for the highbeams. Already did the low beams w/cool blue. Checked the air filter, but it's still pretty clean. I might do the EGR if my buddy has a small tool set.
Earlier this week I changed the battery for the keyless entry, found a thread on the sequence to re-set the car alarm. very helpful, wicked easy.

I also fixed my dryer today, got a nice 220 tickle while I was testing it. Did some laundry to get brownie points with the wife, sealed up some windows, and Cheez stopped by for a beer while my mom and wife go shopping, but oh shit UCONN is getting their ass kicked. It's game time< LETS GO HUSKIES!!!

YES! I finally conquered the power steering pump brackets.. the are all officially out of the car. I heated up the stuck nut until it was glowing, hammered one of my SAE sockets onto it (it was stripped and got that darn thing off finally).. so as soon as the flat black enamel on the brackets dries (I got all dizzy from sanding/polishing the brackets with brasso and another metal polish), I can have power steering once again.. what a luxury!

big difference between a car that has no power steering and one that has the full power steering system with just an inoperative pump though. Aside from maneuvering my car in my really tight driveway I didn't mind not having power steering really.

I just didn't want to risk damaging anything by the fluid not being pumped through.

Andrea -- the third brake light comes out fairly easy.. just the 4 bolts (or is it 5??) to remove the spoiler, then it's screwed on to either the painted or the unpainted part with a couple screws. Plus, while you have it apart you can put some padding in there to stop any rattling you may have :)

thanks chris, just another project to add to the list when i have nothing to do for 1-3 months. :) haha, you read my mind... though to be honest, while my spoiler does rattle when the bass hits, it doesn't bother me nearly as bad as the license plate/holder does. Just like Chris said about the third brake light. I did remove it to paint it. I also had my buddy redo my bumper lenses, side markers, headlights, and my tails. He used a spray gun with some tint paint, then he shot about 3-4 coats of clear on top. Yeah, its VERY shiny! If someone is thinking about getting the smoked Rockblockers, you might not be happy if you do any night time driving. I have HIDs and felt like I had my lights off. thats just my opinion though.

I finally bought an aftermarket rear swaybar and installed it last night. It's a whiteline bar, and fark, did it make a difference. The car turns in better, has less body roll and best of all, I don't pick up an inside front wheel when cornering hard.

*Edit* Looking at a couple of posts down the way, seems I didn't explain myself properly. The rear swaybar stops the inside front wheel from picking up, because with out an LSD, the inside wheel spins when it picks up, therefore you don't get the power to the ground coming out of a corner.

Comparison between factory and the new one.

pulling out of work and got waved at by a moded p5 in the parking lot. caught me off guard, and I had to do a double take lol. It was a midnight blue looked like an 02 with yellow rockblockers/3 inch rear drop 2inch front/looked like a ractive exhaust but the car was so low I couldnt tell. I talked to the guy for a hot secand and told him I post at mazdas247.com, I think I heard him say he posts at another MazdaSpeed site. I zoomed off after a quick "nice ride!" this was the first time I've ever seen another moded p5 before in person. it felt great :)

Yeah, the one thing I should've invested in. I just figured the stock clutch would have been able to hold out a little longer with the power I'm currently making (probably 160-170 whp). Oh well, I guess I need to be more careful until I can afford to buy a new clutch (and with that will be a new flywheel :) ).

Installed a RR UDP. Dang.....the altenator bolts are pretty tough to get to. It's one of those projects that the first time is kinda tough but if you were to do it again it would be a breeze. I attached a few pics including the belt part numbers for reference. Thanks again Patrick (Bala de Plata) for both the UDP and belts. Everything turned out great! The but dyno is happy.

Oh yeah...a few squirts of WD-40 and one hit w/ the electric impact and blamo the bolt came right out. Living in the south has some advantages. If you don't get that see this.......http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123626776&highlight=udp+impact+wrench

How are the Gates belts working for you? I used the Goodyear Gatorbacks with my UDP and I have been having a lot of squeaking issues. I ended up having to go down one size then what was suggested with the alt/ps belt and I'm going to have to do the same for the other as well one of these days. I might just break down and buy the Gates belt if it seems to work better.

Drove the P5 into Atlanta to meet up with the GACC gang. On the way back I had to take evasive action to not hit a "reflector stick" thingy laying in my lane. I checked next to me, all clear, swerved around the stick, then back into my lane, no trouble. Didn't squeal tires, didn't slide, didn't even lean. I'm loving the suspension set-up on this beastie! :D

If I'd been driving a "normal" car, I'd have been all over the road, trying to keep control. If I'd been in an SUV, I'd have rolled over 6 times and exploded. Of course, in an SUV, I could have just passed right over the thing. The only reason I really had to dodge the stick in the first place is that the P5 was too low to pass over it!

just make sure there isn't any "hitting the jersey barrier on the highway".. I saw WAY too many accidents as they happened this morning. I saw a minivan fly off the road (mind you.. traffic speed at the time was 25-30mph), hit an embankment, and roll over.. I just hope it wasn't full of kids. The City of Rochester being ill-prepared for typical seasonal weather strikes again, the salt mixture we have here doesn't work when it's -5F oops!.. idiots

I saw at least 20 accidents (only saw 4 accidents as they happened, the others I just saw driving by) in a 10 mile stretch of highway.. craziness. they actually shut the highway down 20 minutes after I managed to get to work (took 90 minutes, usually takes 20) because they determined it was too dangerous.. yeah duh. My school was open today though (first)

Which knob/shifter combo? If it's going on crooked either the shifter or knob might be crossthreaded. I know with the greddy knob (the one that weighs literally 1 pound) you have to be careful about spinning it on too fast, because it's made out of copper (soft).

Oh and who is this "Corwin" you speak of.. you mean "Mr. Win"? :P

Wait this is the Mazda3 knob with the plastic inner part replaced with metal, isn't it? I bet the threads just don't quite match up, like whoever put the metal in might have approximated the M10x1.5 or whatever the stock shifter is with an SAE tap.. I'd find someone with a metric tap set (I have one.. but I'm quite far away hehe) and have them tap the shift knob and if it needs it, take a die to the shifter. I know when I crossthreaded my greddy knob on, it messed up the threading on my TWM too. I learned my lesson, be careful, especially with heavy knobs: take it nice and slow spinning it on :)

That battery install was f'n stupid. I decided to hook up my Stinger - battery terminal, but that lead to issues. First, I couldn't find the right size allen wrench for it. So then I had to rearrange the wires again. I had to reposition the suckers like eighty times to get the fitment right with the plastic shields and junk. And lastly, the bastard made a wicked cut on my finger. I was just moments from finishing but I was bleeding out a good amount. OH AND NO BANDAIDS!!! Well, just little goofy ones.

rough guesstimates... combined with an AEM sri, OBX header, MAM midpipe with high-flow cat, and Magnaflow catback, approximately how much of a hp increase could i expect by adding the following:

- udp
- j-spec intake cam
- mp3 ecu

also, getting new (ACT) clutch and flywheel (stock, but lightened 3-5 lbs); would this add/alter anything at all?

that sounds like a nice NA setup to me.. switch that magnaflow to a racing beat, the obx to a ractive, and the AEM sri to an ebay CAI and that's pretty much how I was before I decided to turbo. well and I did the VTCS removal and stuff but that isn't a biggie.

It'll sound nice (a little loud for me on the highway but yeah), pull nice and hard, and yield a nice low fuel consumption if you keep the speeds down on the highway :)

I honestly really miss being naturally aspirated. yeah my car is a lot faster now, but it's quieter, and definitely feels less raw. I miss my header, I miss my MP3 ecu, and most of all I really miss that smooth powerband. bah

I have a ractive header and an underdrive pulley, but the ractive header would probably need to be jet-hot or ceramic coated, the 1200F flat black coating on it has mostly flaked off.

the ractive and obx are pretty much the same. On the ractive, the 4 pipes come together underneath the car right before the end of the header. On the OBX, they come together a lot sooner. They are both 4-1.

the other difference is that the OBX has two places for oxygen sensors, but since there's no cat between the two sensors you'll need a couple spark plug nonfoulers and a half inch drill bit to prevent getting a check engine light. On the ractive, there's just the first oxygen sensor hole. I ran without the 2nd sensor until I got my MAM midpipe which had a sensor hole after the cat.. works like magic :)

Cleaned the EGR valve, changed the alt belt and ps belt, changed the oil, washed it, and stepped back in enjoyment that that is all it needed.

My other car, Camry, changed the valve cover gasket, spark plug seals, alt belt, ac belt, oil, spark plugs, Seafoamed the intake system, and changed the tranny gasket and filter. Stepped back to see how bad my hands will look cut up, busted, and covered with grease stains to go along with my suit that I wear everyday for work.

The garage barely stayed warm enough to feel my toes and it was 7 degrees and snow flurries.(pissed)

Nah, just selling the noisemakers. Well, probably selling the noisemakers. I'm not sure yet. I might drive it with the header and exhaust off and decide I want it back. I will probably wait a little bit before I make the descision....... Although I would kinda like the money from that to go towards the stereo build........

It acutally is so simple you would laugh. They include a little blue plug that attaches to the 12V switched wire. I will see if I can find a picture of it...but all you ahve to do is plug in the 12V+ that goes to the radar detector to the little clip...and then pinch the clip to the car wire. I used the wire on the back of the cigarette lighter. It pry took about 10-15min(including the time to take out the center console.
