I threw her outside for the night. Was a bad bad girl. Ok...well...not really. I just needed the garage to clean up the Jeep a bit. Poor P5 stuck in the rain. ...and that's about it.

Well... the turbo build is done!!! I worked until about midnight last night again and then finished up this afternoo around 4 PM. I actually finished the IC piping last night but I spent all day today running the lines for the gauges, BPV, fans, wideband, etc. I still can't find a camera though... this really sucks. Either way, she started up on the first try and seemed to be running strong. I'm still getting squeaks from my belts and it sounds like the midpipe is vibrating against the lower crossmember but other than that I think everything is good. I'm still afraid to take her out though - I'm going to wait until the other little quirks are worked out...

-Gave her the ol' Sea Foam treatment (upbum)
-Followed that up with an oil change... finally switched to synthetic! :D

Next on the list is a tranny flush/synthetic switch and spark plugs...

did you do it without any welding or anything? well even if welding is needed I have a pal up here who has a mig and can weld some stuff .. and if it's stainless stuff I can take it to the place that did a stellar job on my oil pan for my turbo drain.

it's a general-purpose petroleum-based cleaner that you can suck into your intake manifold, put in your gas tank, put in your oil.. or pretty much do anything with.

I did a treatment once on my P5 at around 60k miles and didn't really notice anything. You always run the risk of plugging your car since you're basically steam cleaning carbon out of your engine. I still had/have a crapton of carbon buildup in my head on the exhaust ports, in my intake manifold, etc.

yeah, what Kansei said. Some people swear by it... My car was running just fine before it, so i didn't notice a major difference. If for nothing else, it's kinda fun to watch all this white smoke (essentially steam) pour out of your exhaust (although your neighbors won't be too thrilled about it).

I always go to the wetlands when I do seafoam. My whole campus is on wetlands so I just find a parking lot in a secluded area in the middle of nowhere in the woods (i.e. the freshman dorm parking lot that's like a 20 minute walk from the dorms) and do it there. My roommate's volvo was near 200k miles when it had it's first seafoam treatment.. that thing shot out SOOOO much steam that we were sure someone must have alerted the EPA.

We found an old GMC S-15 or whatever, same as the S-10, but we got it for $200 and we were just gonna tear it up at the mud hole anyways but it was running rough, so we sea-foamed it and that thing blew out so much black smoke we couldnt see the house next door lol, took a day atleast for the smoke to completely stop but after that it ran smooth and idled fine, got the lost power back...then 5 days later blew it up muddin lol.

You can actually buy/trade for a Protege MP3 brace, their brace was vivid yellow :)

From The Man's FAQ: http://www.protegefaq.net/ (http://www.protegefaq.net/)

My dealer got my tower bar all scratched up, what can I do to make it not such an eye sore?
Short of repainting the whole bar (which will cost some money and a body shop to order paint), you can talk your dealer's parts department into giving you a free bottle of touch up paint. The tower bars are painted the same colors found on the Protegé 5, so things will be a lot easier at least. The MP3's tower bar is painted in Vivid Yellow. The color code is HZ. The Protegé 5's tower bar is painted in Classic Red. The color code is A3E. The MazdaSpeed Protegé's tower bar is painted in Sunlight Silver Metalic. The color code is 22V.

Sucks? I was just trying to hook you up with the paint codes. (ughdance)

Trading may be easier. However, consider that these cars are all 4+ years old and a pristine bar will be hard to come by. Factor in shipping (unless it's local) - probably your best bet is to get the paint code you want in a rattle can and have at it ...

i hated the red of my strut bar, so i sandblasted it and painted it anodized blue (to match some other under-hood accessories) and it turned out quite well. i used the duplicolor rattle cans. buuuuut, since my under-hood theme has changed slightly, i'll be repainting it to match the powdercoated valve cover :) (ps, don't mind the absolutely FILTHY engine bay... i really need to get that cleaned up after all the goodies are installed this spring)

crappy tire aka canadian tire... don't know if it's available online. you don't need the metalcast; it was just the 'line' that the anodized blue was availabel in. and yes, one can should be plenty. just make sure to sand the strut bar prior to painting so the new stuff adheres better. i got lucky and was able to use the sandblaster at my dad's office which got 95% of all the red paint off prior to painting it blue.

amsgator
01-14-2007, 10:27 PM
yea i looked on their site and they dont have the color in metalcast. i checked canadian tire online and apparently they only ship in canada b/c it asks for a postal code...and US codes dont work. so i'll just get one can of the yellow and one of clear (both engine enamel)

Yeah, mine was yellow before, I sanded almost through the yellow first. Then painted a thin coat, sanded, and painted again. While it was drying the second time it fell into the grass so I had to sand and paint one more time lol. I didnt use a clear coat and it looks fine, clear coat wont hurt though. Just make sure to wipe the bar down good after sanding it to get all the dust off.

Pics without the MSP valve cover on pls :D Notice any performance difference?Neither, I have the MSP valve cover & did the boot trim thing on 2 & 4. Also modified the engine cover so the plug wires had access for routing. Zipping open the wiring harness to the fuel injection to snake out the coil wires & tape all back up nice was real fun. It seems noticeably smoother idling & doesn't seem to require the same amount of gas pedal to get things done either. Still have only driven 45 miles or so since resetting ecu so we'll see on the performance/mileage aspect but so far very good. Forgot to take pics of the open wiring harness & uncovered valve cover.

Well....................pulled off the Racing Beat today...............then headed back to Chicago for the next week and a half. Probably gunna pull the header off when I get back home.............. Getting really tired of the drone on the highway. Not sure if I am gunna sell everything yet or not....................

You could have just pulled the header off and left the racing beat.. the racing beat alone doesn't drone at all, it's only slightly louder than the stock exhaust.

my car is a little on the loud side with the AEM SRI, OBX header, MAM midpipe (w/cat), and Magnaflow cat-back, and drones a little on the highway, but i do love the deep tone...

Is all that freaking noise coming from the header ?? Well, I can fix that. Got a small pile of air tools and a compressor for X-mas. Maybe I'll swap the exhaust back when I go to take off the header.

Do you have an aftermarket mid-pipe as well? I've heard that these up the DB's as well. I installed mine at the same time as the OBX, so I don't know how much it does alone ...

Yaggie1

No, just the OBX, stock midpipe, and the RB. I too put mine on all at the same time so I don't have any judge of the loudness of each piece by itself. I'll try taking off the header and running with the RB when I get back in town and see what the results are like. I hate the look of the stock exhaust tip after having the RB one on there. The stock one looks so damn dinky........

I installed my MAM midpipe about a year after doing the header. The header alone definitely increased the DB's of the exhaust setup (already had SRI and catback), and the midpipe also increased the volume, though not as much as the header. To me it seemed that the midpipe made the tone a little deeper and not drone quite as much on the highway (even though compared to some other exhaust setups it drones very, very little), even with the slight volume increase...

Biggest thing with me is that I have a 60+ mile drive to work everyday and on the highway at 75 mph I am touching almost 3500 rpms. The noise on the highway is the only thing that bothers me about it. Around town driving is fine cause I'm not at a constant 3000+ rpm buzz. I do like the gains, it definitely feels better and sounds better but, the car is already loud enough on the highway without a loud exhaust to help it. If it was a 3rd car I'd be all good. I'll experiment a bit and take off the header and put the RB back on and see what she does....

I'm considering going back to my blacked-out Protege5 badge with the Mazdaspeed badge from the MSP or the one from the MSM on the right. Mind you these are nothing more than a plastic compound spacer with a freaking 8mm diamter hole through the center. Thieving bastards. I wish I got $45.00 for watching someone's oil drain for 10 mins while I popped in a new air filter and oil filter. Oh, and $65.00 for a coolant flush? that statement could be taken the wrong way.. terbow aka Tony from RI.. on these forums haha.

after running the coolant lines and putting a missing bolt into my turbine housing on the turbo.. it's drastically quieter and mind-blowingly fast.. I need to get her dynoed ASAP so I can know if I need to get a custom wastegate actuator fabbed so I can run a lower boost than the 7psi (at the intake manifold, so I dunno.. maybe 8 or 9 at the turbo) of my current wastegate.

The turbo is at full bore by 2500RPMs though, it spools so crazy fast it's WILD.

Closest you can do (and I saw a thread on it around here somewhere) is to plug the holes with very low profile plastic inserts (plugs) and hit them up with some touch up paint. Or pay 1000% more for these (however ... very clean looking): http://www.bumperplugs.com/BPindex.html

Those Dunlops are so bi-polar... beautiful in dry summer weather, but horrible otherwise. got caught in a snow storm one night and it took me like 3 and 1/2 hours to drive about 50 miles... Ultra High Performance All-Season my ass!!! Needless to say, I switched over to Kumho ECSTA ASX's soon after that -they rock!

Mine is just under a thousand a year.. and that's even covering money spent on mods (not including turbo kit because I haven't told them that I spent 4k on a "sound system" yet)

and I'm 20. when I turned 20 my rates plummeted.

AlturredMP5
01-17-2007, 12:23 PM
well, i think part of it is my deductible. its like $50 with USAA. i know USAA is expensive but they do a hell of a job getting claims taken care of. when my 1st p5 flooded at only 3 weeks old (700 miles), they paid it off and got me an almost identicle p5 in about 2 weeks and paid a hefty down payment for me. and when it got broken into and the cd player was stolen, they had the window replaced the next day and an indenticle cd player was shipped too. so there is an upside to paying a little extra. but there is a down side to USAA IMO. when they stole the H/U, they broke that fake carbon fiber dash peice. i wanted USAA to just send me a check for the cost of a new dash trim and i would replace it myself, but they just ordered one from the dealership and i had to go pick it up and install it. the dealership charged them $450 for that crappy peice, and i wanted to take the check and get the DGM carbon fiber interior package for $320. wouldve saved USAA $ and gotten me what i wanted.

After I put my Shaun Darby (sp?) boot on w/ Mazdaspeed knob I had a similar problem. I made a shaft collar to fit on shifter rod and tapped two small threads for set screws. That allowed me to have a hard stop when screwing the knob down to the boot. By having the shaft collar on the shifter you can custom screw your knob to ensure the Mazda logo (on knob) is square. Also everything is tight. The boot fits snug against the knob.

You can buy said collar from McMaster Carr.......http://www.mcmaster.com/
At the keyword/search bar just type set collar. make sure and buy the right diameter.

I have all this information at work. You really need a caliper to get the correct diameter of the shifter. You use a tap to tap the hole. If you buy a shaft collar pre-made you won't have to do what I did. I made a set collar.....you are going to buy one. I will post up the acad drawing for you tomorrow and dig up the the information you need.

Edit: Ahhhh screw it. Tell you what.......it will take me 5 minutes to make one at work. I will make it and send to you w/ installation instructions. PM me w/ you address if you wan't one. I'ts reall simple....trust me.

This morning I did the "probably not going to be able to drive the P5 for a while/broken toe" mod. It's not one of my favorites.

I was carrying my son down the steps this morning, and misstepped, thinking I was on the bottom one when I wasn't. I smashed my left foot into the back of my right and landed really hard on my left heel. I didn't fall, and didn't drop the kid, but it hurt like hell. I'm going to go to student heath after class today and see if I've also chipped my heel or something, 'cause that hurts almost as much as the toe.

Good thing my modding plans for the weekend are MPV-related, I'm afraid the left foot damage is going to preclude driving stick for a bit! :(

Put the winters back for the cruise to Halifax. No Snow till I hit Bangor, even then it was starting to turn to rain. Ran up route 9 thru Maine into New Brunswick. Was making good time till St John, then from there to Moncton was pouring rain and slick roads, 35-40 max. Stopped in Sackville to see my daughter and then on in the pouring rain and heavy crosswinds to Halifax.

Heavy rain on the windshield gets annoying after 7 hours. Car cruised all the way without a hiccup. I love GPS.
