obx is gold then turns purple, the silver comes from having it jet coated, which will not make it turn purple

If you leave it raw, just REALLY clean it before you fire things up. Any oil or dirt will just burn in and turn purple. It will get a nice even bronze look with use.

Hey Cane, did you get the Sirius add-on from Crutchfield when you got the headunit ? I saw they had it for $100. I've got the Sportster myself. Figure I'll just plug it into the Aux input on the new headunit. And yep, Octane rocks.

Ha!

I installed Sirius satellite radio to my new Pioneer HU on Tuesday. So now I've got the little pig-tail antenna sitting on my roof next to my short antenna. So far so good- the Octane channel kicks.

reynolds - I'd probably do about 2-4 very light coats of the vht, followed by a few coats of clear. That will darken the lenses significantly, but still allow them to be a little orange.

redpr5 - like bala, i'm running the nonfouler 1.5 yrs and no cel, works great. The hardest thing about using the nonfouler is drilling out the one piece so that the O2 sensor fits in, and even that is pretty easy.

I've got the filled stock mounts from NSN front and both sides and absolutely love them. Much less engine movement but hardly any increased vibration. When I change out my clutch this spring, I want to do the rear mount right away as I'm sure that one's looking a little worse for wear.

haha, seeing as you're getting in to things pretty deep with your P5, i have no doubts you'd do an excellent job on the swap :) you're a far braver man (?) than i, lol if i had the time off for the trip, not to mention the fact that she's snugly tucked in for the remainder of winter, i'd take you up on that.

here's a thought though... you've been to ontario and quebec many times. why not broaden your horizons and see the rest of canada? specifically, the best province in the country? :p

(rlaugh) trust me, you do NOT want to go to Vancouver right now - they've been having nothing but terrible weather the last couple months. torrential rains, gale-force winds, huge amounts (for them) of snow, it's been pretty nasty there lately. plus, Vancouver is not a province, it's a city. i thought you were smarter than that Chris :p

Spent the entire day doing turbo prep-work. I finally took out all the parts and figured out what was needed and what wasn't and organized everything for easy access. I also added the one-way check valve and relocated the coolant loop (as well as tightening the belts, again!) but that's all I could do as I needed the car for work today (my truck will be out of the shop today). I worked for about 8 hours yesterday and I have next to nothing to show of it other than an organized garage. I ended up spending about two hours cleaning the BPV as the previous owner allowed water to get into it and rust the spring. Needless to say, the valve wouldn't open so I had to clean out all the rust/water/grease. A dremel with a steel brush bit worked best and now the valve opens with vaccum so everything seems to be in working order although it may need a little more grease as I took off a lot when I was cleaning it. Even so, tonight begins the turbo build...

I did polish the Injen CAI I've got sitting around this weekend, I'll see if I can find time to get that on the car soon.

For the record: Mothers Polish is the shit! I find that most things I buy dissapoint me, or at best meet my minimum expectations, this stuff took the intake piping from "I guess that's metal" to "Holy Shit, it's a tubular mirror" in about 5 minutes. Good stuff!

I also worked out my oil feed line integration so hopefully tomorrow will be very productive assuming everything comes off when it should...

Sweet, that's awesome man! I was only able to take more stuff apart yesterday. I spent the majority of the time fighting the O2 sensors and the nuts on the exhaust manifold. Anyhow, all that stuff is cleared out of the way and I also removed the stock fans. I don't plan on removing the intake manifold - I lifted the car up on some high stands and by removing the IM support bracket underneath I saw I could reach (with some effort) the oil feed and coolant feed. The only hard part will be removing that bolt as there isn't much room, but I'll find a way :) . Because I'm not messing with the clutch for now, my next job is installation. I already have the entire turbo assembly put together and I'm gonna bring it in from the bottom to make it easier - hopefully I can get that done tomorrow...

Yeah I know what you mean. The locking bolt on my alt./sp tensioner is stiff as hell. I'm afraid one of these days it's going to seize outright and shear off when I try to loosen it. PB Blaster and a small hammer worked for me though...

Kansei
01-10-2007, 12:53 PM
yeah I've used pb blaster, a torch, a small hammer, a large hammer (on the power steering adjuster.. can't fit a large hammer anywhere near the alternator) .. no dice :'(

for power steering I just remove the top bolt holding the pump in place so that the adjuster bolt is the only attachment point.. then it can pivot on that.. getting the top bolt back in is a freakin pain in the butt though!

for the alternator I'm not sure what to do. I have the lower mounting bolt loosened, the adjuster on the alternator did work for a while but now it's just unscrewing and the alternator isn't tilting in more at all.. I can't really get at it with a pry bar or anything either >_<

plus it's less than 25F in my garage right now.. I'll have the heater on while I'm out there but I'm sure it won't make it warm really.. just a thing to roast my hands with. 15k BTU FTL :P

^agreed, you won't regret it one bit. as for the install, it's very easy and straight-forward, just take your time :) if you get the B&M s/s, you really have to grease it up good to get it in all the way - it's a VERY tight fit.

I got the package deal w/ the TWM w/ the shifter / knob / boot / bushings. I dont' know how much a difference the bushings made for mine, as I did everything at once, but ppl on here that have done just bushings swear by them (they're the same as the kartboy ones, just blue instead of yellow ;)). It's a great shifter, awesome mechanical feel. A weighted knob is a must. W/ the flat black knob and boot w/ silver stitching, it almost looks like it came stock :D

the mazda3 stock shift knob is heavier than the stock P5 shift knob - and yes, it will fit the TWM short shifter. like Chris (Kansei), I have the Mazda3 leather shift knob and love it, so much better than the crappy stock one from the P5.

ordered the gatorback belts for my UDP today, picking them up tomorrow hopefully - supposed to be about -35C with wind chill tomorrow, but hopefully no more snow. had enough of that with today's blizzard, could hardly see 3 car lengths ahead, and that was IN town.

damn... i've started making a list of everything i'll need to do/have done with the car this spring after i take her out of hibernation:
- clutch and flywheel - going to lighten the stock flywheel by about 3-5 lbs, so i picked up a used one from the junkyard so my car is only down for the one day instead of 3 or 4 while they machine the flywheel.
- UDP and belts
- probably timing belt - sitting at around 97k km, so it's due any time
- new bolt/nut for shifter - the old one is worn, and fell out last fall shortly before parking her... don't need that happening again
- contemplating getting the AWR oilpan and installing that right away
- also contemplating getting the j-spec intake cam - who here has it? is it worth the money?
------ probably get all of this done at the same time since they've got to dig into her guts pretty good any way.

- re-wire sidemarkers (the ones on the bumper) to signal
- wire in door sills
- re-ground my amp (was never properly done last year and the occasional 'whine' is annoying)
- re-wire fogs/eliminate DRL's - i want to be able to turn the fogs on without turning on the headlights
- move my sub from the pre-fabbed box to my new custom one
- rockblocker-type covers for the brand new headlights
- remove the dent on the back passenger door that's been there 3 years?
- add sound deadening to the hatch floor
- contemplating getting the reverse indiglo gauges, but i don't want to risk breaking my needles, lol

anyone want to lend me about $1000? lol some of the minor stuff wouldn't be a big deal, but i don't touch electrical - don't know enough about it, and i don't want to fry anything in the car (poke)

turns out the water pump sound was just coming from the pump pulley hitting the plastic shield sitting behind it. I flushed the coolant with a proper mix, AND WENT FOR A FRIGGIN DRIVE! I drove 25 miles all around rochester, even though my front motor mount isn't even in right now. I had no time, I was too excited. I'm at 7psi, that's where the wastegate actuator opens. no need for the boost controller after all, I can leave it dialed down all the way and locked.

It feels fun. it's weird in .. I think 3rd or 4th gear, when it starts building boost it's like "hmm weird",.. I can't really explain it, it almost feels like lag of sorts, but I'm not sure if it is "turbo lag" as people commonly refer to. I hear the rush of air, look at the boost gauge and I'm at like 4psi, and then the power comes :)

I do still wish I could turn the boost down to like 5psi.. wish it was externally wastegated so it was easier to make changes like that. I have to take the turbo off to do anything to my wastegate >_<

Haha, nice. Lag is what Im pretty sure your experiencing. Now imagine not hitting full boost till about 4900rpms. Thats lag. But by 4k I was at 10psi, then 19psi. If I hit it WOT in 1st and then going through the gears, I didn't have traction till about 75mph. Man, I miss it so so much already.

Man I have had nothing but problems with those belts. I've had my UDP since early summer and I still have not been able to completely get rid of belt squeaking. I even had to go with a smaller alt./ps belt because the original one I had had maxed the tensioner. Nothing is squealing but with lights, defroster and radio on I constantly hear a high pitched squeaking from the engine bay. I'm going to go and tighten them up again for like 5th time. I also think my A/C belt is about to max the tensioner as well... damnit...

I just thought I'd give you a little heads up with the UDP :)

Dude, that's awesome! 7 psi huh, interesting, I wonder if that's where mine is going to sit. Either way that's great that you're up and running. How much more do you have left to do?

I managed to get the oil pan and exhaust manifold/turbo/downpipe assembly bolted to the engine. I was right about the oil return though - it's going to be like 1/2" away from the downpipe so I need to go find some better hose and heatwrap it. The other problem I ran into is that I can't use the stock donut gasket with the Corksport j-pipe - it's too small. I measured the Corksport pipe and the part where it mates to the midpipe is like 2-3/8". I searched around online and went to a few auto stores but the only sizes I've seen so far are 2" and 2-1/2". Kansei, what did you use for this?! Aside from those setbacks I also made the front coolant connection with the turbo so I guess it was a successful day. Tonight hopefully I can finish the turbo connections (and resolve those two problems) and maybe start the IC mounting and piping...

Yeah, I heard the same and that's why I went with them myself. I don't know why I keep getting the squeaking, I mean belts should stop stretching after a certain point but it seems that after about 2 weeks or so, it comes back. Maybe I have a tensioner problems or something. Either way, 4 or 5 turns on each tensioner should help for the time being...

Yeah I know lots of people who have "active" detectors (and lots of them have been caught for it too). I thought about getting one of the passive or "undetectable" ones but then I saw the price, WOW! I'd have no problem ordering one, it's just that I don't want to pay that price. Even so, I think a lot of these new "undetectable" ones can now be detected. nah there's actually a big exhaust leak. it goes away when the car is under boost and pretty much when everything heats up and expands it goes away.. so you basically hear it whenever I'm below 0psi and it's actually loder than the turbo spooling. I gotta take the turbo back off to install the coolant lines, so my p5 will be getting more fresh oil and coolant this weekend :P

01-12-2007, 09:15 AM
Alright, day 3 (I think)... With much difficulty the oil feed and coolant lines are all together. It probably would have been a lot easier to just remove the IM but I've done that once and I really don't want to do it again (although I will have to when I eventually go with the PG IM). That took the majority of the night (I have the cuts on my hand to prove it). Another thing I noticed is that after connecting my MAM midpipe to the corksport downpipe I noticed that the midpipe is really close to the crossmember again. I'm probably going to have to take it off again and beat the hangers with a hammer but I might just put a washer or two under each bolt of the crossmember because I really don't want to have to take out the O2 sensor again. Aside from all that, the FMIC is all bolted up. I ended up drilling too new holes into the mount and through the bumper support as I thought the original wasn't very supportive and now I have too bolts w/nuts going through the FMIC mount and my bumper support - it's not going anywhere. Since it was going on midnight and I had to be at work by 7 AM I called it quits then. I still need to mount the fans before I do the FMIC piping and I need to figure out how to route all the lines and wires for my wideband and boost gauges. I also still need to get an oil return line but after all that then it's the intercooler piping and hopefully finish...

Ah, sorry for the long post

yeah that'll work. just make sure you make it a small hole.

alright, its done. now it just looks like a rock hit it and scuffed it up a little bit. so hey, if people tell me there is no point to the rockblocker, i'll point them to that and tell them a rock hit it...better the shield than my glass :-D

Mine has a bubble that came from nowhere, too. I need to do the same.

Spent all lunch break cleaning out the interior.

I bought some 194 LEDs to install in the instrument bezel...
I put them in, no workey!!! Reversed them to see if polarity was swiched, no such luck!

Where'd you buy them? that's weird that they aren't working. Even if they were working though, the lighting would be really uneven with them sadly.

A syringe works really well to suck the air out of a bubble in rockblocker.

Chris--They were some wide angled bulbs that I saw at Pep Boys (lame I know, but I needed paint!). Guess I'll just stick with the regular bulbs!

Bill--Thanks for the syringe suggestion.

Couple of bubbles here too....gonna try the syringe tactic (Thanks Bill). I had also planned on cleaning the interior and windows today on my lunch break, but didn't have time. :(

Good to hear that you are finally boosted. Your gunna love it more and more as you relearn the car now.
Wow, that's insane (burnout)
