Ordered a Megan cat-back yesterday as an alternative to getting a play car (wanted an old 535iS like I used to have) or sport bike. Once I get that on, all I'll need is an LSD. The front tires light up more often than my uncle Dan did before he died from lung cancer.

I went to get my new tires mounted and balanced, and when one was on, the shops mounting machine broke. Then I drove an hour to the other tire shop and realized that I forgot my wheel lock key at the other shop. So I drove an hour back, then another hour back to the other place, and when I got there they were jammed full of customers so I couldn't get it done. So I drove another hour back home and just got here. Gotta go back tommorow morning :(
Oh, and on the way home, the whole plastic piece under the front bumper fell and got torn off, and I completely freaked out cause I thought my new tires had deflated and the loud horrible grinding sound was my wheel on the pavement.
Pretty crappy day overall.

oil after 2k? Why? And what are you gonna put in it? (I changed my this past weekend, so I'm curious...)
I didn't end up doing the oil change. It had Mobil 1 extended performance with a mazda filter, and I have some Mobile 1 10w30 (not extended performance) to put in it and another Mazda filter. I got raped at the dealership for the filter though, they charged 12 bucks for it.
I'm going to order a big batch from mazdastuff.com so I don't have to do that again. At least the dealership gave me the washer for the drain plug (I'm using the original plug still and with no washer on it). I think tomorrow I might do my timing belt as long as the bolts on the #3 engine mount want to come off (monsieur impact wrench will assist with that).
Does anyone know if the K&N filter recharging kit will work on an injen filter? I need to clean or replace mine badly, preferably I can clean it so that I can do it this weekend, otherwise I'll have to wait forever for an Apex'i filter to come in the mail.
So many thing on my to do list for the car.
To Do:
- timing belt
- tensioner spring for timing belt
- valve cover gasket
- rear brake rotors/pads (KVR pads brembo drilled rotors)
- redo egr valve removal because I found the gasket on the floor in my garage.
- clean air filter and reconfigure my winter SRI so that a hole doesn't get rubbed in the first pipe.
I feel like my car is a mess right now, I hate winter. There are large salt crystals on top of my valve cover even. The only clean thing under my hood is the red top battery because I just put it in last weekend. I almost feel like saying "screw this" and just giving it to the dealer with all the parts and have them do it so that it just gets done. I think when changing the timing belt they would notice the presence of my underdrive pulley and jdm intake cam but they shouldn't care since the car is under no warranty (extended warranty just ran out at 60k miles).

it works. (also there is enough stuff in the kit to do it probably 3 times)

Definitely a nice enclosure. As small as the enclosure on my infinity basslink is it still obstructs the use of the hatch. If I ever do an enclosure like that for a sub in my P5 I think I'll mold it to the plastic side panel of the hatch and do it on the left side so that I still have access to the jack.
Let's see. Today I redid a little bit of wiring under my hood. I rewired my Alpine head unit's power wire (was using 16 gauge) with some 10 gauge and routed the power wire for that and for my basslink into the underhood fusebox where their inline fuses are crammed. I tapped them into power just after the 100A fuse just inside the fuse box. I'm happy with the results so far, less wires going up and attaching to the battery.
I'm in the process of doing the K&N filter recharge on my Injen filter and then I'm going to take all the various intake parts I have (I have an eBay CAI and an eBay SRI and quite a few extra couplers and stuff) to set it up as an SRI but without the metal pipe coming off the throttle body hitting the brake booster thing.
while I have the intake out I'll do the egr removal/cleaning process for the third time since I found the gasket and will be putting that back in.

I put the gasket on the EGR valve and sanded the flaking paint off my CAI and put that back on with the freshly cleaned injen filter.
And now suddenly my battery light is on when I drive the car. I drove for about 15 minutes and everything seemed normal (including voltage). If my alternator died would it have been obvious?

you should try to see if it is charging, the volts will read normal if it just happened, especially having put in a new battery. I don't know if you have a place near you that offers to check your system(or actually if you have a voltmeter to test it)

Pulled all the wheels/tires off and repainted the calipers. It's been almost exactly 1 year since I last painted them, and for one light coat, it was holding up pretty well, but it definetly needed another touch-up.
Also went to the store and bought some duplicolor metalcast and thought about applying it to give the calipers a shinier look, but didnt like how it turned out on the tests.
Wanted to wash her and wax her today too, but its amazing how time consuming painting calipers can be. So I guess I'll wait until monday. :-\

Thanks! Believe it or not, you're the main reason I decided to go for it. I found an old thread started by you where you showed off your blue rockblockers and smoked tails, and it looked awesome.
So I tried some of the fogs out first just to see how the yellow on yellow looked, liked it, and went ahead with the headlights.
Now I think I'll go ahead and get some smoked tails and I'll be all set. (thumb)

That makes me want to get a job. I second you on plug wires being outrageously expensive, and plus from what I've read they really aren't any better than the stock wires for my car because of our distributerless system (probably because the wires are so short they don't need to be so beefy). I have the Sparkco myself, and from my experience they charge the same amount for a short 2-wire system like our cars and a 6 long wire system like my mom and sister's Altima and Maxima. Bastards.
Welcome to the forums? Did you just get your Protege5? If so, looks like you definitely caught the forum bug.

Actually, I bought the car in Dec of 03' new when I was married. 6 months after that, I got divorced, and I "donated" the car to the ex wife, and purchased myself a 04 Suzuki Forenza S. On xmas eve of this year I totalled the Suzu on the way to Boise, hitting black ice. So with the settlement, I paid off the Suzu, the Mazda, and spent the money needed to get prepped for road racing this spring, with the ex wife getting a new Kia Spectre5 (she's getting remarried in June).
As for the wires being expensive, I really dont care about the HP gain it gives, thats not the point. What I want is consistancy. Anyone who races knows....its not time thats important, its consistancy.

put big wide zipties on the hangers to prevent the bushings from moving around. Are you on stock bushings or kartboy bushings? Either way it should help, on the kartboy bushings of course the exhaust won't move up or down at all but it slides side to side on the hangers.

Is this your first winter in Rochester? Being a native central NYer, I suggest that you not take off the snows. You have at least 2 more months of having to deal the potential snow.
It's my second winter (also the second extremely unseasonably low-snow Rochester winter) here, and last winter when I was home for spring break (third or 4th week of February) I did the swap.
I hope I don't have to put my snows on, but trust me I'm prepared. I have a garage at school so when snow is in the forecast I can swap the snow tires back on. I noticed my Blizzaks are getting near the 1st wear sensor already >_< . November(thanksgiving)-February 2004-2005 and November-January 2005-2006 and they are already done for after this winter. Wow. Oh and last winter I definitely put like 3k miles on them tops because I was living on campus at school.
The car looks so great with it's summer wheels back on though, I'll have to snap some pics tomorrow. I did notice the ecsta MXs are louder and have worse grip than the blizzaks, but maybe that's because 2 of them are right at the wear sensors and the other two are damn close (after 1 summer (10k miles)).
Did I mention I hate tires? :)

While blizzaks are great snow tires, they wear exceptionally fast on dry pavement and/or warmer weather. I've got the nokian hakka q's (this is the third winter on them), and they're barely broken in - I probably have 3 more winters out of them anyhow. This is winter, and last winter though not to quite the same extent, were unseasonably warm and dry, and I have no complaints with them. YOu might want to check them out....
That being said, I can't wait for winter to be officially over and get the summers back on the car. :)

I've always thought it would be great to mount the stock MSP sub enclosure to the "privacy tray" over our trunks so that for the rare times I need to haul stuff I could just toss it out of the way. The Infinity BassLink isn't bad in that respect, but it still has too many wires connected to be convenient. One of these days I'll wire up a custom quick-connect plug or something.
How do you have the MSP sub wired? Is it easy to disconnect?

I'll be saving my headlights from rock destruction at the track or whereever else i wanna go. They use a little doublesided at the corners at the top of the lens, and the front hood seal to hold them on. They are easily removed for night driving.
I have mine in the standard CF color.
i put some cheap-o dynamat stuff in my door panels and isolated all the rattles in the doors too. Rattle free music! Yay!!
PS- and touched up my wax job from a few days ago.

i put my new luminic bulbs from the street unit gb in and installed a new hu with a sirius tuner. i spent most of the few daylight hours i had installing the lights....i forgot how much of a pain in the ass it is to get to the passenger side headlight. i'll go back and make my temporary sirius tuner/antenna install more permenant when i have more daylight hours to work in. it got freaking cold once sundown came and i wasn't about to start removing trim panels and wiring things properly. i can't wait for summer...
oh... and just to let you guys know....the luminic bulbs kick ass!

i pushed my p5 past the limit of traction today. entering a cloverleaf turnoff (rated for 25) at 55. i am trying to master the art of left foot braking. well, i got about a quarter of the way down the ramp and looked at the speedo- damn, just under 60. not fast enough- so i gave 'er more gas. got about 2/3's the way down and the back end started comming around. stupid me... oversteer means more gas, less brake. well, my left foot didn't understand that and just pressed harder on the brake until it locked up and i was facing the center of the clover leaf. turning as hard left as i can, nothing happened... just kept spinning until i was facing back up the ramp. at this point brakes are fully locked and i am sliding towards the rail. i finally came to a stop about 3 feet from the rail still facing up the ramp, looking at a streak of tire crumbs laying next to big dark tire skids, haha! when i tried to start it back up, nothing would happen. that is when i realized i still had the brake pressed hard... lol moving my foot back to the clutch corrected the starting problem, and then i drove away- a bit slower... moral of the story- practice makes perfect! zoom zoom!! lol

dont get me (at least) wrong...it IS a good story, and kinda funny. And it's good that you didn't do it with anyone around. I mess around too when there's no traffic. Just keep safe ;).
Why were you left foot braking around a cloverleaf? Could u just get some throttle lift going on?
wildo
02-08-2006, 02:38 PM
good question with the throttle lift. i guess i haven't thought of it. well... yes i have- i have hankook p106 (or something close to that) tires and they are total crap. basically no grip at all on moderatly spirited driving. i hate them! so anyway- at least with a little brake pressure the weight is shifted forward so i can get a bit more traction with 'em. that is the reason.

I've heard the only way that the kooks are any good is if you get em shaved to next to nothing...and that really won't help you a lot if they're ur dailies

I had Hankook K104 Sport 205/45/16 summer and Icebear W300 205/50/16 snows and loved both of them. My wife has hankook all seasons on her car and they are great in all weather. The only real complaint about the summer tires is noise on concrete roads, other than that I loved them. They were reasonably priced and handled well on wet and dry roads. Before I got the snows the stock dunlops were awful in the snow so bad that I got stuck just about every time it snowed. I never got stuck with the Hankooks, they would lose grip when taking off on icy roads, but what tire wouldn't.

Actually you are wrong. You love the ones you have now... Are yours the K106s? Sounds like that could be the difference cuz I think they are a little cheaper than the 104, which I am not sure if they even make anymore. Sorry if I came off "flamy", everyones opinion adds something to most topics so you not liking the ones you have may save someone some hassle down the road.

I spent 6 hours on my rr-racing rear motor mount inserts.
Still not done- but according to the howto, im past the hard part.
Holy crap though- I think I would have had an easier time installing a turbo kit. After the rear mount, I think I will be up for just about anything short of an engine rebuild.

Hopefully my last bushing will show up from AWR (there were 3 instead of 4 in the pack), so I can install the rear sway today. Also, the body kit gets braced and 3m'd on saturday, completeing the install. Email stated the new black/blue redline.com ss boot would be here around the 18th.
Planning on having a radar system installed soon, but the one I want is pricey to say the least, but it has seperate front and rear lazer diffusers also. hehehehe
The spendy part is how I want to hook it up. Most radar output can be summed up in either a level of beeps, or bars on a lcd of sorts. I've discussed with a guy to wire a board that can intercept the signal sent by the radar circuitry to light a series of led's on a switch (on/off), that will be mounted in the vents on the dash (blue light). If one bar is show on the hidden radar base, then one led will light one vent. If two go off, both the first and second will light. If its three, then three with be lit, ect. Of course, this all would be on a on and off switch for the fact being it would get really really really annoying on all the time, but at night time, in certain situations, well....it would be handy. ;)
Any thoughts on that idea?

If you are electronic savvy at all- then check out the LM3914 IC. All you will need to do is find the varying voltage signal that your detector outputs as a result of the radar strength. The LM3914 takes a varying voltage input- i believe from 0V to Source, and divides that by ten. So there are ten increaments and each is hooked to an LED. This really is a sweet chip and is perfect for your application. By far the hardest thing is gonna be to find the varying voltage output on your detector. My advice is to look up som radar detector schematics online to try to find said output before probing around aimlessly on the detector. Good luck with this- shouldn't be too hard a project.

wildo
02-09-2006, 10:07 AM
One other cool thing with the LM3914 is that you can make it a "bar display" like you said you wanted, or you can make it "moving dot display" where only the highest dot is lit, and none before it
