today I drove my car for 4 hours with about 2oz of gear oil in the tranny. Last night on my way from Rochester to CT, about an hour away from my house in CT I heard a loud clunk like a rock had hit the underside of the car.. it felt fine for the drive home so I didn't think twice. I was redlining it like CRAZY on Route 8 in Mass too haha god I love that road. So anyway, this morning I was late leaving to go pick up my FMIC/bov and I started her up and heard a weird new rattling noise in the engine bay. It was definitely much louder on the drivers side of the car, and I popped the hood and was pretty sure it was coming from the tranny. I drove downtown to gas up and go to the car wash, and the car felt/drove ok, though I did notice it was a little bit hard to put it in gear at times. As I got into Rhode Island on my way to Pawtucket, I was noticing strange sounds coming from the transmission. 3rd gear had a moderately loud whine and it had popped out of third for me (it has done this in the past.. seriously like 1-2 times per month but it hasn't increased in frequency so I've been ignoring the problem since I bought my car). I was beginning to think that the sound I heard the night before was my drain plug just.. falling off the car. I couldn't locate the drain plug since I couldn't even fit my head under the car (yay being lowered plus not having the jack in the car), but I could see that the tranny was soaked in its own fluids.
I picked up my FMIC/bov in Rhode Island, and then went searching for an auto parts store in East Providence. I found a NAPA, asked them about the drain plug, and they said "I highly doubt it has a drain plug. I've never heard of a car with one of those, what is it a Volkswagen or somethin?".. ugh. He said there was a dealership down the road so I went there. The parts lady looked it up, but I guess their computer system doesn't actually give them any valuable information about the plug (like the size). They wouldn't be able to get it in for at least a week anyway. I went back to nAPA and bought the only gear oil they had, Valvoline Syntech 75w90. I poured some in with a cool filler neck thing with a built in valve made just for tranny fluid fill-ups. It poured right back out as fast as I could pour it in. I still couldn't get a good enough view to see if the drain plug was there or not.
I got farther, and into Mass. I was probably about 5-10 miles from Mark's house (bazooka joe) and happened upon a Pep Boys. I went inside and asked them about the part. They didn't list it in their system. The guy showed me some universal expanding plugs that could be used as a stop-gap measure, so I bought a couple sizes that I thought might fit. I also bought 4 qts of Royal Purple Syncromax because pep boys carries royal purple for some reason (almost makes them a decent company). I was able to locate the drain plug, right where it should be. This is when I really started getting worried that there was like a hole on the backside of my tranny, even though it hadn't grinded gears at all. I removed the drain and fill plugs to see how much fluid would spill out .. about a shot glass worth. Ouch! Wherever the leak was it was low enough down that almost all of it could leak out. I managed to get to Mark's house, though at 1:30 instead of 9am like planned. After a while I decided to go under there and Josh (altspace) and I located the culprit. There was a little M10 or M12 (can't remember which) bolt missing (see picture here (http://picasaweb.google.com/clauretano/TrannyCatastrophe/photo#4998918508741853202) .. it can be zoomed in, I uploaded it at a decently large size). Hey at least it was up a little higher than the drain bolt so the tranny wasn't totally dry. ugh.
So yeah.. note to self: next time the car is jacked up, loctite that little bolt :P

Yeah I was on the phone with rob and he was telling me about the tranny rebuild kit suspiciously going on sale on protegegarage :P
I hope there's no major permanent damage. I noticed a slight whistle in 5th gear on the highway that I don't think was there before.. but who knows *crosses fingers*

Good to hear, looks great!
What my plan is - come spring when the P5 comes out of hibernation - is to get them covered. It's not Rockblocker, and it's not the 3M stuff either... I forget the name, but it's optically clear (much clearer than the 3M) and a lot thinner, but it protects from chipping just as well as a lot of the thicker stuff. With these pretty new headlights, I don't want them all chipped and pitted to hell. Pics of the new, eyelid-tinted headlights, below - they go on the car tomorrow evening hopefully.
I taped the headlights, but unfortunately it didn't quite seal in a couple places, and I got a little leakage from the VHT. Anyone have any suggestions on how to remove it without damaging the headlight lense?

Swapped Magnaflow muffler back to "civilized" street series 5x8 oval one from the rowdy race series one & got fresh set of 205/40/17s. Funny how one same size set of tires can differ from another just because of brands like clothes I guess. The new ones are just a bit taller(& not just because of new unworn tread) & bit wider looking on the rim which also means more civilized ride but less on rails feeling turns. Always the trade off. Glad I didn't go for the 215/40/17s cause they woulda rubbed. These will be good for daily driving, the others better for serious driving.

oh no3s I gotta go get emissions testing done today. Luckily for me one of my good friends back home is doing the testing at Valenti Audi/Saab/Lotus/vdub in Watertown, CT. I can't wait to pass emissions testing with a header and midpipe installed wohoo. Haha OBDII, I pwned you!
Nice the CT emissions testing looks pretty comprehensive:
http://www.ctemissions.com/faqs-testing.html
http://www.ctemissions.com/testing-procedures.html
For older cars they even check for gas cap vapor leakage with a pressure test. That's awesome.
Checking for a cat? yup, I have one.. but seriously I could have just replaced my cat with a resonator, would they know? Wait I do have a resonator.. so it'll look like two cats hehe.
I can't wait to see my car on the dyno finally :P I hope it registers under 100whp and the state of CT sends me a "so sorry" card.

Wait those are the ridiculously long race ramps that they show like lambos going up on? yikes.
On Saturday I got my car up on some rhino ramps and it was really close on my P5 (1.8"-ish drop).. and the 03.5MSP lip isn't really any lower. Mark's car couldn't touch the ramps at all, the edge of the ramp was like a foot from his tire with the AutoEXE lip plus his drop (pro kit IIRC).
They look nice though, how much were they?
Wait those are the ridiculously long race ramps that they show like lambos going up on? yikes. Yes :) Also see here: http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2805457&postcount=6929
They were $290 shipped and will likely be my sole Xmas present this year (other than underwear and socks). I figure it's a lifetime purchase as I plan to have my garage filled with at least one road scraper at all times.

Unless they make longer ramps than those $290 dollar ones, it looks like you're out of luck. See how close the MSP lip is? The MSP lip doesn't hang down much if at all lower than the stock P5 bumper.

My car finally got to sit on a dyno :P but since it's OBDII she didn't get to make use of those rollers. Just plug in and pass... oh and the hood was never opened :)
My idle is 680RPMs, is that totally normal?
Glad to hear you passed. My idle sits around 1200rpms (auto tranny - any difference in idle between an auto and manual?)

Nice work, I've always wanted to do something like this to accent my MP3 pedals. Did you screw these into the floor or are they glued or something - just curious as I might try to do something like this in the future.
So what did I do to my P5 today? Aside from spending about 2 hours total in traffic killing my clutch I purchased what may very well be the last thing I need for my little project (glare) .

Thanks very much for the props guys. I was a little nervous about looking rice or at leat too many damn polkadots. Unfortunately I don't have much free time in the shop or outside of working hours to help anyone out. I have been wanting to do this for so long and just finally put everything to the side when my boss was out and did it. I made the dead pedal and heel pad out of 1/4" aluminum. I drilled and tapped from the backside on the heel pad and bolted to the mat. The dead pedal I used counter sink bolts thru the plastic riser that is bolted to the floor board and sandwiched the carpet between with a threaded plate under to hold it together.
The pedals I bought from ebay. They had sets with dead pedals but not in silver only blue and red anodized.

I dont have one complaint with mine except that soemtimes randomly its hard to get a signal upon startup but thats about it.

Awesome. I actually spent about 2 hours in the car today playing around with it. Found a new route home from work. I thought the rain and heavy trees in some areas would interfere with the signal but no problems. It has the North American maps built in and some 5-6 million points of interest for skiing, shopping, hotels, restaurants.
I saw the ones for the traffic alert but you need to subscribe to a traffic alert service with a monthly fee. I can use Smartraveller or MyTraffic for free. I hate subscription services.

I went to a car wash last saturday right before leaving for the NEPOC meet but it did nothing to get the dirt off the car. I need to clay and seal the car before it gets snowy but I don't have the proper meguiars sealant.. the stuff I have is bad and leaves a terrible white residue, still gotta order their synthetic stuff.

I know, I should be ashamed (peep).
I just don't have the resources in Blacksburg. Sure there are those drive-in car-washes but I don't trust any since they crashed one of my friends cars, and the "wash-it-yourself" ones just cost too much money for the kind of thorough washing I like to give her. Really does suck though - what kind of apartment complex doesn't have water spickets?! In all seriousness though, she has been wiped down a few times so it isn't as bad as it seems. If it isn't raining yet again tomorrow I'll get out and take some pics too.

Haha, don't feel too bad magnum, I haven't washed mine in months as well. I should take a picture, the dirt buildup is just incredible. :) I'm pretty anal about my P5 too. Never satisfied with the job those drive-through carwashes do.
Not to mention that we've been having record rainfall here in Vancouver. Non-stop rain for the past 3 weeks. Nasty storms that have contaminated the water supply, necessitating a boil water advisory. Serious flooding in some areas...
... And all I can think is, "I wonder when I'll get the chance to wash my car?"

NC has been having the same weather conditions. and trust me a black p5 is a sad thing to see!
Anyways....Yesterday, I got to drive her like hell through the hills and twisties of Franklin County, NC... My grandparents live there, so I took the wife and kid "backroads touring" Just like driving through the mountains, only not as mountainous. The car definitely held her own, i was truly impressed!

They don't salt the roads when it snows here they just dump tons of cinders (ground up lava rock) So while everybody gets salted I get rocks thrown at my car from other traffic. I guess on the good side of that I get a new windshield every spring from all the cracks from rock chips.

In my hometown in CT it's a combo.. on town roads they use rocky sand because the hilly/moutainous terrain demands some additional traction, but on state roads it's 100% CaCl salt.
In NY it's excessive amounts of salt at all times. I hate being on the highway when they are salting, there's no way to avoid getting pelted since the plow trucks go like 45 and have salt spreaders on the rear AND sides. Ugh I can't wait (pissed)

That's why I got a winter car :D Morrigan is awesome in winter, but I hate how dirty she gets - and the increased likelihood of developing rust. So I got a winter beater to spare her the torture... though I miss driving her like crazy. :(

Discovered we have a big-ass scuff on the front bumper yesterday. It's right at the bottom of the left side, like one of us failed to make a turn, or failed some kind of parking maneuver.
The only thing I can think of is that we scrubbed it turning left into some driveway somewhere, but the the scuff is more on the side surface than the bottom, so I don't know what happened.

on the 626 front though, new winter tires next week. i can't really afford new tires, but this is the 4th winter on the nokians and they're just getting too dicey; it didn't help that they were on the car last 'winter' from mid-October thru the end of April, and 80% of the time we had no snow and it was hovering around freezing consistently. and as an extra treat, i'll get the garage for nearly a whole week starting next thursday. :) knowing murphy's law though, by the time that happens will be having balmy weather instead of the -40C sh*t we've been having the past week.
