.. and I'm back.

The car is completely back together..

well actually I'm waiting on my air filter to dry so I can re-oil it and attach it up. Then it's completely back together.

Summary:
1. rr-racing rear motor mount inserts
2. Mazda engine block heater
3. converted CAI to SRI because I'm sick of how dirty the CAI filter gets
4. new coolant
5. back to the factory strut tower brace because I felt like it.. I dunno I doubt my other one is any stronger, just shinier.
6. VTCS butterflies and rod removed, JB weld applied.. hope I applied it well enough that there's no vaccuum leak *crosses fingers*.

right now it's sitting in the garage with the battery disconnected, I'll go out in a min to put the new air filter back on and then hopefully take it for a drive.

I'm not doing another 56 miles on bike tomorrow. With 2 hours of sleep last night and then all those miles, my body was physically exhausted when I was ~0.5 miles from home.. I could barely go more than 5mph on flat.. I've never gotten like that, looks like I need to do more biking :P

I'm sure I'll be sore all over tomorrow. If the car doesn't work I'm taking the day off. My boss is ok with it, he actually asked me why I bothered coming in today after I explained the state my car is in and that I rode my mountain bike to work.

*crosses fingers again* here I go.

car is running right now.

good to know: the car will start with the throttle cable disconnected, the throttle position sensor unplugged, and the egr solenoid unplugged.. it was idling rough and threw a CEL and I was like :'(

Now it's smooth as can be, but CEL is still on sinc e I don't feel like disconnecting the battery again.

Oh and the engine block heater works. It seems to take 1-2 hours to get the radiator hoses feeling nice and warm to the touch.

Man, I'm tired just reading about your day :). Lookin' forward to feedback from your shakedown run.

zomg. It feels like I have my MP3 ECU back. I don't know why but I definitely notice a harder pull from 5k rpms to redline.

Wheel hop: killed
Bucking when jabbing the throttle: killed
Vibration sensitive electronic components: likely killed.

It feels like I'm back to my 95 durometer front motor mount now that the rear is in. It feels good at idle and while driving but that initial rev to take off... the whole dash vibrates very loudly.

I should probably get my codes pulled to make sure the TPS and EGR are the only things. The car drives fine, but I just want to be sure.

I was worried that I would get the VICS and VTCS plugs mixed up but it seems like I didn't. green to the VTCS solenoid (which isn't connected to anything at all), white to VICS, right?

Edit: and I'm still amazed that I took apart that much and didn't have any extra nuts/bolts when finished. crazy.

Man, I'm tired

You're not the only one. I did 56 miles of bike riding to and from work plus all the wrenching.. all on 2 hours of sleep after wrenching on the car hardcore for 11 hours. I'm just glad I'll be able to be a lazy American and drive to work tomorrow. I have a feeling today's soreness may get worse.

Determined to never let my car see the dealership for stuff :P

The only thing my car has ever had done to her that I didn't do was a computerized 4-wheel alignment.. and various tire mountings, but I usually just bring the place my wheels when I do that. Oh and once I let a friend change my oil since he worked at a shop but.. well I was there the whole time watching haha.

P5's been at the bodyshop for the past week :( For those that feel that their suspension is a tad on the "firm" side, go down to your local Enterprise rent a car a pick up one of these bad-boys for a couple days ... behold the '06 Saturn Ion. The driving sensation is difficult to put into words ... but I'll try. "Driving the '06 Ion makes you feel like a fat lady wearing high heels in an isolation chamber". More descriptive would be "Driving the '06 Ion is like placing an oven mitt on your cock and trying to have sex".

I keed I keed. I love the rotaries, apex seal issues an all.

edit: my car should be nice and happy right now sitting with the engine block heater on all night (need to find a timer that can handle 450 watts.. don't want to spent the money saved by not warming the car up in the morning in the winter on electricity to run the engine block heater all night.. conservation is fun :P)

Engine block heater = great like ~$30 investment.

This may sound strange, but you don't have a really huge key ring with a ton of keys do you?

My dad used to have 10lbs worth of keys on his keychain and there was a period of time where he would turn left and the keys would shut them selves off. It took him a while to figure it out, but that is what caused the problem.

*Edit: Pics added. Rear bumper cover and quarter panel are good as new. While it was at the shop, I added an MSP front bumper cover and had the top grill bar painted. This was followed with the entire cars paint (new and old) getting buffed out and polished. I installed this on my laptop a few days ago but didn't remember I had it until now. It's a little piece of software called Car Companion (open source). You can get it at http://www.chocolatay.com/carCompanion/

It's java based, so you can use it on macs, pcs, linux, whatever. You can use it to keep track of any and all maintenance, it's totally customizeable too. It comes with some preset maintenance items like oil changes and spark plugs, but you can change the service interval and cost and everything, plus add notes like what oil/plugs you use, etc.

You can export the data in XML format, print reports, even print a sticker that lists the mileage when all of your next maintenance work is due.

So far i've added air filter, coolant, oil, plugs/wires, and rear sway bar lube. Now any time I'm working on my car I'll just punch the info in on my garage laptop as I'm doing it instead of using a notebook in my glovebox like I have been.

It does U.S./metric, can track multiple cars, etc too. In theory you could use it to keep track of gas purchases too, but that isn't really the point (and it won't calculate mpg and stuff like that like you can easily do in excel).

^^^Will take a look at that tonight when I get home from work.

Installed the silverstar turn signals a few minutes ago....finally! I paid for them back on the 27th of September! I actually consulted the owner's manual first and was shocked to read that hatchback owners should contact an authorized Mazda dealer for replacement of the turn signal bulbs! (omg) Popped the hood and WOW, install was the same as the sedan. Still looking for high beams, but want to pick up one of Rickman's hoodies first. :)
i think the manual is talking about the rears.i can only find clear turn signals around here except at mazda and ebay of course.

Ok where is my jackass hat?....I just checked the manual again and it was referring to the side-marker lights for the hatchback. But mine was produced before the addition of side-markers.

It means the ones on the sides of the front bumper. They probably say that since they aren't all that easy to remove like the other lights on the car.

Awesome Mark! I teased myself today. Drove the MS3 and a RX-8. Almost pulled the trigger on the 8 untill we found out it was a buyback from Mazda. I was seriously ready to sign on the dotted line untill the buyback thing came up. Damn it all!

my Prosport gauges came today.. well two of them. I guess the oil pressure must still be backordered, I just figured they would wait and send them all at once. I got my electronic boost gauge with sender and my Electronic EGT that came with a really nice looking sensor. Now I just need to figure out where I want to mount the EGT... I'm guessing on the s-pipe or j-pipe. I took a couple short videos of the gauges in action (hooked up to my 12v power supply for testing purposes).

I'll have to transcode the videos in a bit so I can attach them on here. the gauges are beautiful though.

yeah two owners on such a new car. I'd be wary of any used RX-8 just because they're such cool cars.. who would sell them? People who didn't change the oil as directed, didn't remember that it consumes oil, or just otherwise treated it like crap.

The MS3 was indeed a quick car. Tough to say though because I could not run it through with 3 other people in the car. Still pulled nicely in 2nd and 3rd. My only small gripe with the short run I had with it is that I was surprised at how loud the exhaust is. I have a MSP muffler and intake, but I found the MS3 was a bit annoying at times. Almost the same as the MS muffler for the P5 with that low drone, which made it difficult to speak with others in the car. To be honest, I really do not find the 3 as attractive on the outside as the P5, though I did infact enjoy the interior.

What was funny is that I test drove with my wife and daughter, both of which looked at the 3 in disgust. Did not like a single thing about the car. Instead, they kept pointing me towards the RX-8, of which got high praises. Needless to say, if infact we all loved the MS3 I would not been driving the P5 anymore. So be it....on to the next adventure.

Surprisingly, it doesn't look too bad - almost identical to the 15" winters. However, I do have a potential problem that I'm hoping you guys can help me with. (help)

The 14's are fine on the front, proper thread 'depth' on the studs, no rubbing or clearance issues, etc. However, the rears are another story... Neither my dad nor I can see anything rubbing, and when I put my hand in between the rim and the brakes, I can't feel anything touching - at the very least, I can get one finger in between any part of the caliper/rotor, and the rim. But, there is half the thread 'depth' for the studs that there is on the front and you simply cannot push the rim on any further. (scratch)

Has anyone tried putting 14's on their P5 (I know, terrible) and encountered any problems? I haven't tried moving the car yet and to be honest, I am a little scared to just in case there is something touching on the rears. However, I do have to move it at least once or twice in the next few weeks - have to swap over the headlights, and give her a quick bath before covering up for the rest of the winter.

If anyone can offer any advice or firsthand experience, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I've already had it fixed once. It's bubbling all along the edge of the fender now.. before it was just between the rear bumper and rear fender where they meet. I'm waiting until it's winter and I have my stock wheels/hood back on before I go to the dealership. There's no chance in the world that my current wheels/tires would rub the fenders to expose the steel to rust, but I'd rather not take any chances with the way some dealerships enjoy voiding warranties. The only warranty work my car has ever had before is for rust problems :P My paint was bubbling at 50k miles, now at 75k miles it's bubbling again.

i know 323f's in europe come with 14s, same brakes/suspension. id need pics of what you are talking about to see for sure
what exactly would you need pics of, and from what angle(s)? i was certain 14's had been done on the P5 before, but it's just a little weird how the back ones don't seem to quite fit, yet i can't find where/how...

So there is a space between the wheels and the rotor/hub? Maybe the center bore on the steelies isn't large enough?

That's probably a good bet. It might be hitting the dust cap on the rear wheels. In fact, I'd put money on that.

^ I hear what you guys are saying, but they fit no problem on the front. Is the center bore different in the front than the rear? As for the dust shield, no problems there either. It's tight, but there is still room - same with the rotor and the actual caliper (side and front, ie what 'faces' the steelie).

It's just got me baffled...

The center bore is the same front and rear.. I know since well.. yeah the stock wheels fit on any location, and all my hubcentric rings are the same.

Hmm a picture might help.. try jacking up the rear and then getting a pic from behind the wheel.. there's gotta be something preventing it from going on farther. When you bolt it down all the way, is the wheel tight feeling? If not, well then you know the drill I'm sure.. lug nuts aren't deep enough.

The front will fit fine as there is no dust shield over the bearings. The clearance issues I had with the rear shield were seriously millimeters... but that is enough to cause problems (when I drove, the wheel looked like it was wobbling).

I run 5mm spacers to give it the extra clearance needed. No problems now.

Everyone does their first time. I still have mine since I didn't need them when I went to HIDs, but I'll need them eventually when the car needs to be sold (.. I really don't want that day to ever come). I don't think the part would be much from Mazda though, check www.onlinemazdaparts.com to get a price quote. Andrea-thanks for the offer on the pic, but I want to get these tomorrow. I need my car.

Anyone have the part number offhand?

yes, I did exactly that, except I didn't "try" to jack up my car... I DID jack up my car. Now I could start spewing excuses, but they all end up meaning that I was Stpid and tried to rush through the simple task of changing to my winter shoes.

For those in the "non-know", the trailing link is a very flimsy piece of metal and the brake line clip is almost exatly in the middle (weakest point)... It is bent bad enough to rub on my tire and that I cannot move my car without risking blowing my tire.

Have yet to see the Ultras in person. I was able to pick up silverstar's for $20 at my local Walmart. They had about 20 pairs marked at that price. I went back a few days later and the shelf was still marked $20 but each package had a sticker with a $30 price tag. Someone goofed in my favor. :) I have bought 3 sets of silverstars and have yet to pay retail. If you have the time, try ebay....sometimes there are some good buys on 'em. I have even seen the Ultra's on there go for under $40.

I wouldn't bother with anything Sylvania. If you want looks, they are ok for that. If you want lighting performance, get OSRAM Silverstars from http://www.powerbulbs.co.uk

They are clear, no blue coating.. yet they have the same light color temp as Sylvania Silverstars just by using better materials and making more light output.

If you really want lighting performance get HIDs, 5000K or 6000K :)

They sort of are the same company. They sell bulbs in Europe under their Osram brand though. For some reason they just sell the "ricey" (no offense to anyone here.. I've owned them before myself) Sylvania Silverstars here..

Hence why the web site I posted is a .co.uk.. they have free international shipping though :)

They have some Sylvania ultra white (or something, I can't remember) that I put in when I replaced my lows. Best bulbs I've owned so far. Only had it about a month, but there's a visible difference b/w them and other cars on the road. There's no yellow in the light at all. They have a REALLY pale blue tint on them (not the dark blue of the "regular" sylvanias)

Not really... We just know we're going to have to go somewhere after Dru and I finish school, and we don't know where yet. We may come back to the D.C. area, maybe NoVA, maybe MD, so as to be near family again. I think we were both surprised how much we missed having family around. It's especially tough with the kid, too.

We may just move in to the Atlanta 'burbs though. We like GA weather, GA politics are no better or worse than VA politics, and we know people in Atlanta now. Plus Road Atlanta is close, and there's a good autocross schedule that runs from like March or April into Nov. or December! So, we'll see.

I had to call Steven Hawking to reassure me that it there wasn't any possible way that was my car too. haha, no, that was after. Here's how I hurt it, and why I will punch my friend in the face. I'm borrowing my friend's engine hoist to swap a JDM GSR motor into a friend's Civic. Part of the hoist was still bolted to the engine in his now scrapped 240sx project. So I go and unbolt this part, no problem. Well, one bolt is in an awkward position so I must use a stupid baby wrench and use my sexy child-like hands to get at it in between the engine and firewall.

As I'm doing this, I'm looking at the motor since it had been put in the car and then he gave up on the project. I start to think, "hmm... it doesn't look like this is bolted down to anything."

*CRICK* That is the noise the engine made as it shifted backwards, pinning my finger against the firewall. I did one of those screams where you open your mouth and yell, but all that comes out is air. Sort of a "UUUUUGHHH" but gasping.

Now my left trigger finger is pinned by a motor against the firewall and I don't know what the fuck to do. My brain scrambles and I think about yelling for help, but nothing will come out. So I start grabbing the valve cover and try to rock this bitch enough that I can free my finger, but it weighs a metric shit ton. Finally I manage to move the motor just enough to slide my crippled finger out, by means of grabbing the valve cover with my right hand, balancing all my weight on the front bumped, and pushing with my knees.

:( I need my finger for work and video games. I'll take a picture of it when it is purple and giant and cool looking.

I'll take a picture of it when it is purple and giant and cool looking.how are you going to masturbate :(
