isnt that more? :p

probably :'(

I'm getting crap gas mileage.. gas light came on on the way back from work.. at 275 miles on the trip odo. I'm going to go put some petrol in and see how she was in terms of real MPG numbers. This was my first tank on the Protege5 ECU so maybe it was re-learning for a bit.. so I'll do one more tank on 87 and then see if maybe I get different results if I go back to premium like I ran with the MP3 ECU.

yeah. When you first install it the power gains aren't hugely obvious aside from smoothing out the powerband which you can definitely feel. Once it gets through a couple driving cycles though and learns it's really nice. The top end power is so good!

Yes....all of that :D. Even tho you have to pay a bit more for gas, you get way better MPG b/c of how much leaner (not in a bad way, cuz the protege's run really rich stock) it runs.

I paid $40 shipped from another member. To my knowledge he doesn't make these anymore so the only way to get them is to buy them used. Happy hunting (it has taken me quite awhile to get them). They are usually sold within minutes of the f/s thread being posted.

Kansei
10-25-2006, 03:39 PM
I think ProtegeGarage sells replica type gauge rings.

I have original DaveB polished rings as well. Funny part of the story is that I actually had them in my posession before I even got my Protege5 :P. Had them with me when I went to the dealership the week after buying the car to pick it up.

I think I got them for like $23 dollars shipped too. I've seen them sell for over 75 dollars on here used, hence why MAM and others made replicas.

Actually I was being sarcastic, wondering why she had to pull the cluster out. Looking back I should have done the same but I really did get mine installed with it still plugged in. It was a royal pain in the ass as I had to use a very small flat head to pop the lens clips out. First one side, then the top then the other side, first side popped back into place....start over etc. Finally I had to use one finger to keep one side open while I popped the rest out.

If you have the manumatic shifter, it has the same threading as the Protege MP3 shifter. You can't fit ANY other MAzda shift knob, but you can fit the gray/black leather of the MP3 shift knob.

I'm considering a remote starter but it's a big investment for my car. I'd have to get a power garage door opener first, which I'm sure my landlord wouldn't mind since it's improving the house, but then installing it would sorta be a bitch the way the rafters are in the garage. Maybe instead I'll just buy dryer ducting and pipe it through a hole in the side of the garage and remember to place it over my exhaust tip at night? haha

One of my roommates got a nice compustar alarm, remote starter, and turbo timer installed in his Volvo two weeks ago for like 340 installed. He hasn't started his car by hand once since that day, I asked him. Plus, the range for the remote is RIDICULOUS. It can reach from any classroom in the College of Science to a parking lot that is really far away from there.. hell my P5 keyless entry remote barely works 20 feet away lol.

took my frunt bumper off and stomped at the dent, popped it out a bit, the styrafoam and the big metal bar in front of the radiator got smashed in, bent the big metal bar pretty good, the tip of the hood got smashed in a bit too, the front radiotor got bent in the middle a bit, does it matter? it didnt change the way the car drives. and the radiator and the fans got pushed in a bit closer to the engine bay. doesnt seem to pose a huge problem, but money is tight so i cant rush to get it fixed.

If you buy your car rings, does that mean you're in a serious relationship?

lol....I never really thought about it, but I would say yes. According to my wife though the rings wouldn't be necessary....she just shakes her head when I tell her of something new I found or want to take some pics....has even called my crazy. I guess that would make the forums here my asylum. haha

Oh and she drove the car yesterday and didn't even notice the rings....still love her though!

trade places? you can come to rochester and do my job, I'll go down south and "work". :P

I'm still holding strong with my hope that last year was indicative of a drastic and sudden climate change in Rochester. All the rain we've been having lately (miserably cold rain I might add) isn't increasing my confidence much.

I'm 1/4 of a way through the tank of petrol I got earlier this week. I've been trying a "keep the rpms low even if it means needing to floor it all the time just to get going" trick.. shifting out of 1st by 3k rpms, 2nd by 2.5k, 3rd by 2.5k, 4th by 2k. I haven't been watching the trip odo to see if I've netted any gas mileage improvements though. I think I'll let it get down to half a tank and then fill up again to get the numbers. I'm sick of driving my car like this, it really doesn't enjoy it. Oh and also never going over 68 on the highway except for when I'm forced to for some reason or another. cruise set at 68 in 65 zone, 62 in 55 zone.

on my magical 36mpg journey I was at 68mph for 4 hours of it so I figure it couldn't hurt to try that again.

This is all after getting TWENTY FIVE mpg last tank. The worst gas mileage ever recorded with my P5. I was averaging 29.something on my excel sheet before that.

It has had a tune recently, but the biggest thing is it never sees the freeway unless I go out of town, that's a rarity. Tucson only has 2 freeways (I-10 and I-19) and they both go around the south west side of town, I'm on the north east. The way to get around down here are the major roads, they are three lanes with a stop light every 1/2mi -1mi. On a good day it takes me 10 min to drive across town, I also deliver so that should account for a lot.

:P It really needs to stop raining so I can wash/wax my car. It needs to get it's pre-winter waxing.

I'll at least try to get some undercoating done myself tomorrow with the ol 3M rubberized undercoating in the rattlecan.

is it more comfortable to sleep outside in the garage than in your bed? or do you just like keeping the car company.. you COULD buy her a friend.. :D

Let's see, bit of a delayed update...but....
I had my front motor mount installed along with the AWR front end links and she pulls much straighter now (tire rotate too). The guy didn't go for installing the rear mount too, and I can't blame him. But he didn't need to cut off the stock links and I'm surprised cuz they were rusted to shit.

Also tore the eye ring out of the driver side floormat, dang it!
Time for some winter time mats anyhow....

participated in my first autocross today. Just took a couple free runs at the end, nothing official. If i could say one thing about the handling it would be understeer, although it really wanted to lift off oversteer. All in all good fun unfortuantly it was the last event of the season so i'll have to wait till march to do it again.

zomgzomgzomg

so yeah my car is REALLY apart. intake off, strut tower brace off, battery out, egr, throttle body, fuel rail, upper and lower intake manifold all removed.

... all just to install my engine block heater..

for anyone who was considering getting the engine block heater: get it professionally installed. It isn't worth the trouble.

I should be able to do my RR racing rear motor mount inserts since I have everything all apart. Is it totally normal that all inside the intake manifold it's all orangy - black ?

I'm thinking I'll spray it with some Seafoam deep creep.

Drove the car home on Thursday and heard an especially odd clunk, even given the that I've heard some new clunks since the instal of the AWR. I took a look under the car to see if there was something obviously wrong, and found that the left endlink was laying on the lateral link. The entire nut/bolt that hold the endlink to the strut was gone! So, now I'm running around with a disconnected rear way bar, and need to get the proper replacement hardware from AWR, I suppose. Bummer.

dude..it's not hard to do a rear motor mount. i took mine off and put it back on in a matter of an hour. UNDER the car. just prop up the car on jack stands, prop the motor up w/ a jack, and use some tools to pull off the WHOLE motor mount. including the bracket holding it on. and adjust the motor w. the jack.

Kansei
10-30-2006, 11:49 AM
I didn't want to have to take the bracket attached to the subframe off since I was just doing the inserts. I don't see how that would even help at this point. I just can't maneuver the engine to get it lined up properly. I need to move the engine up 2mm and back 1mm. No matter what I do with the jack under the engine I can't seem to get that right. I can jack it up higher, and then it isn't far back enough.. I lower it down, and it still isn't back far enough.

When I get back from work today (will take a long time since I'm on bike and it'll be dark when I get out.. 26 mile ride back home ftw) I'm going to try a few things. First I'll try detaching the front motor mount to see if that gives me some more range of motion.

If that doesn't get me anywhere I'll loosen the bolts holding the motor mount bracket to the engine and see if I can wiggle something into place without removing the bolts that I already have attached.

try placing the jack somewhere else on the motor. it'll work. SOME way. i know that for sure. but taking the bracket off and putting thebolt in the mount THEN putting the braket bolts in seemed easier for me..

well if you look at the sequence of pictures, I actually did try that.. but then the bolts for the bracket didn't line up.

yeah I'm thinking jacking up closer to the actual mount might work better. I'll try jacking up the flywheel/clutch area or the tranny.

The bike ride wasn't bad though.. really refreshing. It's the ride home that may suck. I have and LED headlight and strobing taillight so I should be safe and all, but with temps probably getting back down into the 30s it may be a bit nipply. :P

Typical commute to work for me...

Hey Chris, I don't have anything technical to say but Good Luck getting her back on the road!!

Thanks. I'm optimistic that I should be able to get the motor mount bolted back up when I get back from work.. I have a few hints/tricks/tips to try out. After that, it's just a matter of putting my intake manifold back together (zomg so many bolts, I guarantee I'll have "extra" when I'm done) and putting everything back together.

oh and I'm hoping I tightened the engine block heater enough. You have to tighten it with an allen wrench, and I don't have a way to use my torque wrench with that. I filled the car back up with coolant and it didn't seem to leak out any.. but of course it wasn't being pumped and won't be until the car is totally back together so I'm screwed if it starts leaking.. I'll just give up at that point and for the first time in my car's life take it to a mechanic to get fixed.

I gotta remember to finish cleaning my air filter.. so far I just sprayed it with the cleaner and nothing more. I need to rinse, dry, and oil still. I'm going to take my CAI piping and SRI piping and rig up a SRI that doesn't rub on the brake master cylinder so that I can run an SRI for now. I'm sick of having to take apart the fender liner to check on the filter.. and plus CAI filters get dirty soo quickly.

I've been pulling a code for cyl #1 misfire so this weekend I changed the oil, PCV, removed the EGR valve and cleaned it out. I was going to remove and clean the IAC valve but I got called in to work so I didn't have time to fiddle with it. Still have the rough idel and it stalled durring the cold start up this morning but it's a little better than before. If cleaning the IAC doesn't work I'll swap out the #1 cyl injector with a spare I have laying around.

Yeah today was supposed to reach 59 here and I think 62 tomorrow.. tomorrow I'm going to wash and wax cars with my roommate and his volvo. It's gotta get done before the snow comes >_<.

.. still deciding what wax I'm going to use. For some reason I still feel like a nice thick liquid like the non-synth waxes will hold up longer than a runny liquid like Turtle Wax Ice, though it is said the synthetics do last longer. Maybe I'll use NXT, the perfect tradeoff.. not runny, but still synthetic. too bad it leaves white residue everywhere.
