^^ hellz yeah. sadly I didn't have time to dry my car before I ran to the autocross yesterday. I got up, washed it as quickly as possible, and then left. I had to be there by 08:15.

my car is in waterspot hell right now. I'll have to find a way during the week to make time after work for a washing/waxing session.. maybe even a little clay.

Lol, I have a cover from Mazda but its a PITA to mess with.. I really need to get a coat of paint sealent and a good coat of wax on it before winter.. *sigh*

I changed my mod direction with my car today.. I'm now reconsidering going turbo. I was pretty much sure for the past couple months that I wasn't going to, but now I'm thinking I really should. I'd be going with the stock MSP kit, aiming for 160whp. I'm thinking I have enough supporting mods for that to be possible between my intake cam and full exhaust... maybe. I might just start buying up pieces to the MSP turbo kit puzzle, customizing it to suit my needs with maybe a small FMIC (could be cheaper than getting the MSP radiator and smic) and some engine management. I've dropped thousands into NA stuff for my car.. and I really don't have anything to show for it at this point. Yeah my car feels faster but it's still slow. I know even at 160hp I'm not nearly fast enough to be competitive in SCCA solo SM class, but it's better than where I am now. Plus, it would be a fun learning experience too.

I should put some mods that I've done that I won't need up for sale to push me to work toward this goal more. .. like my underdrive pulley and mp3 ecu.. won't be needing those. Anyone want to buy my spot on the custom cam group buy? The cams should be sweet, and if no one buys my spot I'll definitely take them, but probably won't install them.

True. You're not looking to squeeze out max power, so using your cam money towards a turbo set-up makes sense. Hell, CWill made over 400 whp on the stock cams.

I don't think a 60% HP gain over stock without any fear of blowing the engine is that depressing. Still have no clue what route I'm going to go down for ems though. I'm thinkin that'll be the last piece of the puzzle.

edit: spending over 2k on N/A mods to have no appreciable change.. now that's freakin depressing lol.

i have two responses
1) 60 whp being a 60% increase - depressing
2) yes. 2k on n/a mods and still running high 15s/low 16s (probably) is sad. really sad. fuck dude....

I really need to get my ass to a dyno.. maybe my car is making magical power levels with my mods.. lol. It doesn't at ALL feel slow to me anymore.. but maybe it's just all the noise it makes that tells my brain that it's fast.. looks fast, sounds fast... wouldn't shock me if I did high 16s lol.

(werd) Consider an MSP ecu w/ a Unichip.

As opposed to my stock P5 ECU? ... I already have that, a nice easy swap lol.

I was thinking of going with the microtech unit but unichip is plug and play, right?

Salmon_Rob
10-02-2006, 09:04 PM
unichip sucks imho. if you are going to spend almost as much as a real engine management, why not spend a little more and do it right. i've wired 2 unichips, and had nothing but problems, but the full stand alones, while slightly more intensive, always work, are always easier to tune. you have to take the unichip to certain ppl in certain places. most shops can tune a microtech, or a haltech

I did a lot of research and picked up an MPI - I then sold this and was determined to pick up a universal AEM or Microtech. After taking a realistic look at my goals, I started trolling for a used unichip and got a near mint one (only the piggyback had been plugged in for a day or two - everything else still wrapped in plastic) for $650. The #1 reason I picked it up was due to the insane smakedown you are given during emmisions testing in California. I can run two custom tuned maps or completely turn the unit off for emmision testing. The biggest grief with the Unichip is the boost controller. I'll be bypassing this issue by using the new AEM truboost unit. Also, I would have never went in this direction if I didn't have a great local unichip tuner that dyno tunes for my maps. I'll also be in Texas in December and may just stop by to see JDM Sam. Add up all these costs along with my J&S and I could have easily picked up the AEM or Microtech - these just suit my neads better (or so it seems now lol!). If none of the preceding stricks a chord - I'd recomend the Microtech from NSN Motorsports; Steves got great support.

*Edit - Chris, the Unichip is "PnP", but only works with the MSP ecu - but you might be able to offset that cost by unloading that MP3 ecu you have :)

Salmon_Rob
10-02-2006, 09:25 PM
and you do bring up a great point. unichip absolutely pwns for emissions. taking a microtech out/turning it off would be damn near impossible, but you can hide your unichip

Installed obx & mam catless midpipe the other night. I guess I need to get washers to drop the crossmember down and some hose clamps to stiffen up the hangers to get this midpipe off the crossmember tonight. Feels and sounds like ass the way it is.

If that doesn't fix it, I'll have a brand new midpipe for sale.

How do people go about bending the hangers on the midpipe?

Went out for an "exploratory" drive last night. Since I moved up to Duluth relatively recently, I don't know any of the fun little backroads around town, so for about 30 mins, I'd just pick a road and drive on that one until it ran into something I recognized, then repeat :D It was so much fun, Ol Blue and I haven't bonded like that in a while :p. And before any1 flames me, I was only driving agressively when I was the only person on the road. I wouldn't want some1 else taking responsablilty for my stupidity if I make a mistake, if you know what I mean lol

altspace
10-05-2006, 09:01 AM
Well, I would recomend you become familiar with a road first before you "tackle" it. Otherwise there is that extra hint of an accident waiting to happen. Unless of course it's flat out an you can see far ahead of you.

I've got the apexi diverter plate on on each Pro ... They're a nice finishing piece, but scratch easy. The good news is that they buff out easy too :). I recommend removing the leading edge weather stripping on the hood to lessen damage. It's redundant so no issues should arrive.

21 questions FTW!! lol.. but seriously, since I work for mazda I have the luxury of testing out parts before I replace them.. I've put a new EGR, a new MAF, etc... and it just still wants to stall at idle.. you'll be sitting there, it'll be idling at like 1k then it'll just drop and cut out.. I'm very frustrated with it.. its been intermittent now for awhile, its been getting more frequent recently

The lack of secure mounting is why I'm using the air diverter to help mount it better. Here is a link to it on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MAZDA-01-03-PROTEGE-323-JDM-FRONT-GRILL-DX-LX-ES-MP3_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33645QQihZ020QQitem Z300034894679QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Here are some poser pics I took of it test fitting with chrome trim I also have but am not going to use most likely because it is plastic. F*&%, well the tires come out (and get stored in the garage), the seats go up and the cargo cover goes back in place when I get home! (pissed) Got 3 out of 4 rims today and now I have to wait for UPS to come pick up one box on Monday (with 1 rim in it) and take back for their investigation process....7 to 10 days....ugh.

On the funny side, I just replied to myself. :)

Sucks man, I hope that doesn't happen to me. I've been waiting on a set of MSP wheels, but its taking a while. Tomorrow will be 10 business days (shipping from west to east cost). I bought my wheels and tires separately. Tires from http://www.discounttiredirect.com fourth set I have bought from them. Ordered Monday morning and received Wednesday morning.

Now the rims....picked them up offa ebay (from a store, not private). Paid over the phone Monday and shipped same day. Tracking showed delivery today, however it was supposed to be 4 not 3.

yep same scheme. Just have to paint the MSP bumper the fender laser blue with blue pearl. Then paint the lower grille black with blue mica. Once the fender & bumper are dry then we'll add the black stripe to them.

Since my car is sitting with the paint curing until wednesday I might as well get out of town.

. I'm going camping. Lexi (my 5 year old) has been practicing elk bugles and wants to go camping while she is on fall break from school.

So the trailer is packed & the truck's loaded. Gonna get up in the morning and head north. FYI we're dry camping, so no camp ground for us. We'll be in the middle of the woods. We'll be back in town by tuesday afternoon.

We'll be in Unit 8 you can look up Arizona Game & Fish website and see where that is. Same area where I shot an elk last year. Infact I have elk steaks marinating for tomorrows dnner.

last night while going to pick up Flyers hockey tickets, I along with a friend in the passenger seat, decided to take a small jug handle really fast. I did it so fast that with a tiny bit of braking (the cars in front were slowing for a red light) actually got my ass end to kick out big time and had the car going sideways. It was fucking awesome. I have never had the back end slide on me like it did this night. Was able to bring the car back under control pretty easy. She responding very well. Totally impressed with her. if only i had pics though I'm sure the people in the hotel by the jug handle got a kick out of it.(first)

So i got home and took off my grounding kit figuring that was the problem. Of course it turns out that the grounding kit wasnt the problem just that when I re-crimped the factory ground to hook it up to my grounding kit it wasn't on tight enough.. awesome!

I did that on the first day that I had my license. It was in a 1997 Dodge Intrepid 3.5 SE, which sucks because it had clotch seats. I somehow think it would be easier to get that stench out with leather seats (less absorbent?). It took about a week of febreeze and having the windows open 24/7 (unless raining).

Now I know to avoid at all costs :P

josh, lovin' the new sig... very cool :)

didn't happen today, but yesterday on my way into town, my shifter fell apart, and morrigan nearly lost her towing virginity :( luckily though, i was able to baby her home - thank goodness i was only a few blocks from home and not halfway across the city!!

stopped as soon as i realized what happened (i'm stuck in second); luckily one of my cs bronzoils was on the ground under the car and the bolt was resting in the exhaust heatshield. probably won't have a chance to jack 'er up until tomorrow or saturday to take a look... i REALLY hope the other bushing is still in the shifter; if not, guess she's parked for the winter since i'll have to order another set of bushings from corksport (1-2 wks). :(

thank goodness for mairead; at least i don't have to worry about getting around. :)

Cleaned the EGR Valve, flushed the tranny, and changed the oil+filter.

She's definitely running and shifting smoother. :)

Wow, was something loose Andrea?
It had been rattling for awhile, but when I checked everything back in June it all seemed to be fine/tight. The rattling was getting worse recently so I was going to jack up the car this weekend to check things out again... guess she beat me to the punch. (ughdance)

I'm hoping the other bushing is still stuck in the shifter; if not, new ones from CS will be on the way. Regardless though, she's now more than likely parked for winter. I do need to get her moving at least a little though; once the car cover arrives, she needs a wash/clay/wax DESPERATELY before she's covered.

Was helping KCBHIW with the GRM $2006 Challenge car tonight. At this point, he's down to prepping it for the concours portion of the event. The clear had some pretty bad orange peel so he's wet sanding the entire thing. Anyway, got pulled over in Alpharetta on the way home. Officer was pretty cool, I didn't get a ticket, but I don't think he tagged me with anything. He said he saw me doing "about 60" (in a 45) and heard the engine revving while I was going down a hill. I was like a) cruise was at 55, and b) manual transmissions don't coast down hill. I wasn't really going any faster than anyone else, but I think he just happened to hear mine. No biggie tho, it's about time the law of averages caught up with me lol. I haven't been stopped in about 2.5 years.

ya i made sure i can open the door.... but damn.... how didnt she see my car... i mean even if she didnt see the car i was standing next to it (right behind her rear window which she would normally be looking out of) if it wasnt for my car im sure i would have been hit. what sucks even more was i was expecting it and watched it happen, not being able to do anything. the worst part is my friend was calling to her before she got into the car but i guess she didnt hear us (less than 30 feet away) nor did she see us.... wtf.

16 hours later my car is ready for HIN.

Detailed the engine bay, washed and waxed the car, wet sanded the bumper and fender, then hit them with rubbing compound then hit them with glaze. I even waxed my rims too. Installed different underhood lights. detailed the inside of the car. Waxed my laser blue helmet with Rednecks_R_us on the back of it. Installed my MSP windsplitter on my new MSP bumper.

Oh its raining now. Hope fully the roads will be dry for my 2 hour trip to Firebird Raceway where HIN is being held on Saturday.

baaack from Toronto. That was a blast.. I get 20 minutes away from my house where there's no snow, and suddenly there's two feet of snow. Then as soon as you cross over into Canada via Niagara falls.. no snow again.

I should have gotten a pic of my car when I was getting gas at the station with snow all around and my with my summer wheels :P

edit: Got to check out a Mazdaspeed3 (red) at St. Catherine's Mazda in Ontario. Damn that's a reeeally well-executed car. They totally fixed all of the design issues that made me vehemently hate the normal 3 hatch.

... the power doesn't hurt much either lol.

I hate you. My powerbad is teh suck now. I never realized how much of a difference it made until it was gone! My car used to pull HARD up to redline, now it just falls flat.

Tokico Illuminas, Mazdaspeed strut hats and bump stops, Mazdaspeed Protege springs.

Nuff said. The car feels so balanced now. It's nothing crazy, but it just takes a set in corners and feels a lot more composed. So far, I'm really happy with it. I have the Illuminas set to full stiff right now, and I may just leave them. I was thinking of messing with the setup some, but it just feels so good. Just enough damping without being unruly.

Thanks a lot bro. In the last few weekends I've managed to transform the P5 from reliable, good lucking but pretty boring transportation, to reliable, better looking (w/ the drop), very fun transportation.

So far, let's see:
MSP Cat back
EBC Greenstuff pads
TWM shifter, bushings, knob (and boot)
Ractive Header
SRI with K&N Filter
MP3 ECU
Tokico Illuminas
Mazdaspeed Protege springs.

FTW! I love it :) I've pretty much done everything to the car that I wanted to :D
