Nice Bruce!
Making final arrangements for my big roadtrip in the P5 to VA. Will be coming back with lots of great news.
where in VA will you be heading? Northern, Southern, ?

^^ isn't it all southern?
I had a great day with the P5 today.
I entered it in the Rides for Life car show in Rochester (held at RIT) today. Well I was there volunteering all day so I wasn't anywhere near my car (handling car registration from 2 until 6-ish, then doing tons of freakin math to calculate winners in all the classes). It was a blast, it's the first time I've been that involved with setting up a car show. An excellent time was had by all. Next year we're having a wagon class though. The blue wrx that you can see in my gallery link sorta outclassed my car tenfold in the "sport compact" category. :P

Well i spent a couple hours today cleaning out the back of my car because a half gallon of OJ was punctured and spilled all over. Luckily i have the trunk tray in the back which contained most of it. some of that damn crap made its way through the carpet and into the spare tire well. I ended up removing both rear side panels to make sure none of it got elsewhere though i did find water in the passenger side compartment where the jack goes. the water came from when i cleaned out the wheels wells from my trip to maine. I guess the pressure from the hose opened the little vents under the bumper cover and in went the water. with the exception of the carpet everything appears to be clean now. I just need to really clean the carpet so it doesn't stink like OJ. fun fun fun. at least i had a good auto-x yesterday.

09-17-2006, 09:03 PM
i am almost positive its stock... it's real touchy, i mean a garbage truck drives by and the thing will go off. I searched other threads here and it sounds like a few people have had the same problem so they towed it to the dealer. Best part about where I live is that the dealer is 112 miles away and in Canada...eh

yeah the mazda5 was a close call. We were going to get a tribute but ended up with the 5. As the p5 it's more of a daily driver for me. Since I worked with my cous on this car all the time, I know it's in good condition. He's ready to move on to the S2000 so I just pick up the p5 from him. Thanks man... It really sucks; just got her out of the shop on Thursday
So this is what she kind of looked like prior to the hit and F'ing Run (the Driver side)
and the the 2nd pic is what she looks like now... I "had" to sand that side down... I didn't feel like driving around it the way it was. It honestly looked like they took a metal plate and just rip the paint and the side marker off...

I got them done when they finished up the front bumper...but thanks, I'm just trying to get as many things done/ready for next summer...
Winter is around the corner and I still have to get:
1) Springs
2) Rims and Tires
3) DG front lip
These I could just get and put them away until better weather
Then I can start in the inside again.. since the engine should be done shortly; ordered my MSP Plastic Valve cover; s/b in by Wednesday.
Would love to paint it the same color of my car...but as ALTSPACE said the cold air doesn't help to paint... So I might be thinking of having a pro take a swing at it.
Hopefully next year Pat, Matt, Don and I can go up with yea to meet the "NEPOC" guys...looking forward to it (first)

Put the brakes back together. Unfortunately it got ridiculously cold last night and today, so the paint didn't dry so well. I should have brought them in. Oh well.
I got it together, but the brake pedal feels like mushy junk. I'll have to pick up some more brake fluid and bleed again. When I took the calipers off to paint them, I put the little plugs in the lines that came with them. Except they don't plug worth a damn. So all the fluid drained out and probably introduced a ton of air in the lines. I'd bleed bleed bleed and it'd look good, then bleed some more and get a nice pocket of air. Rinse and repeat. :(

hmmm, i may have to get a couple sets of those... even if you only use them once or twice, it seems like they would pay for themselves.
i've been wanting to paint my calipers for a couple years now - and the paint/brushes have been sitting in my 'car corner' since March, but i just haven't found the time when i can properly do it. or when i have, it's crappy weather and not having a garage kind of hampers things like that.

back on topic though, sort of...
took Morrigan to work and home today - pretty soon she'll be parked, so i'm enjoying her while i can before the snow flies. i love my p5, and i imagine that after her overhaul, i will be loving her even more ;)
'raced' my friend craig in his p5 with Mairead, just to compare her acceleration and for shits and giggles. surprisingly enough, she kept up with him until we hit around 50-60kph; after that, he definitely started pulling nicely. i have to say, i was rather impressed, and he grudgingly admitted that for a 'granny car', it wasn't too bad. an 18 year old, AUTO 626 that is heavier (not sure by how much?) than the P5... i'm liking her more and more :) but OMG, wheel-gap! one day, after Morrigan's current overhaul is complete, that WILL be remedied.
the benefits of working at a dealership: took out the RX8 from work today for 1/2 hour... that rotary just sings at 200kph :D

this is STILL on my to-do list... but i don't play with electrical/wiring, so it will be on the back burner for a little while. however, with all the extra wiring that's likely going to happen over winter, this will probably get thrown in finally. :)

Bala your car looks hot ass hell! I normally don't like big wheels but those are looking nice.
Bled nearly 32oz of fluid through the brakes... and... VOILA! Holy crap the brake pedal feels about a million trillion billion gajioalsdfjikadsfldasion times better. Even better than before I started messing with them a few days ago. The new pads seemed to be pretty quiet as well, I didn't hear any squeaking yet. Hopefully that stays that way. I'll have to clean the wheels and see what the dusting is like as well.

damn, that's lookin great man! Are those 18's? If so, they're some of the best looking ones I've seen on the P5.
The door guards / mouldings are gonna be one of my only aesthetic mods. To be completed after I finish all the performance stuff (should be about 3 weeks for that). Have a Ractive header and Ebay SRI w/ K&N filter goin on this weekend, and 3 weekends from now I should have illuminas w/ mazdaspeed springs installed :). Get it aligned in the next week, then off with the mouldings :D

Thanks guys! Yes, they are 18's. 18 X 7.5 w/48mm offset.

It's a PITA, but the results are worth it. There are a bunch of ways to get it done ... Try to do it when the ambient temp. is 70f + (or warm the work area with a hair dryer) I picked up some of this stuff at Pep Boys. I used a syringe to drip it in at the top of the guard, let it sit a few minutes, and start pulling :). Have plenty of shop rags on hand and follow up with more adhesive remover. I final buff with a paint cleaner/wax will erase any evidence they were there.

Install was ok. I havent tinkered with my car for a while and this was the first time I have done anything like this, so I took my time.
The frustrating part was busting through the seal/grommet on the firewall. Its kinda awkward. Funny thing is the instructions tell you to use a coat hanger wire as fish tape...rofl.
One of the sections of the harness that supplies power (the weird thing is they make it so it disconnects in the middle) that plugs into the back of the fuse block (under the kick panel) is missing. So I ordered another section of the harness from Mazda. That'll get here Thursday.
Sooo...everything is in and really nice lookin, just no power capt'n. (ughdance)

I didn't know that. (dunno) Well, the stock Denso's absolutely ran better than the NGK Iridium IX's. So much so that i picked up a set of "OEM" plugs from Mazda to swap back in and they supplied me with NGK BKR5E-11's (WTF?)! Ultimately, these got shelved and I installed the NGK ZFR5F-11's instead. currently i auto-x with www.sjr-scc.org the events are held at atco raceway and camden county college. the next event on Oct 1st is at CCC. it is a nice size lot(2x the size of atco) plus there are no noisey dragsters and no raceway workers interrupting. Also there is shade at ccc which is a bonus. we usually get good turnouts for each event. id say an average of 45-50 drivers each event. check out the site and go to soloII.

my car has been feeling especially smooth today..
I'm sure that'll all go down the tubes when I have to drive through a hellish 1 mile stretch of construction zone to get to the highway from where I work.
It's an amazing construction site though. Every morning the road is operational with all 6 lanes plus center turning lane open, around lunchtime it's down to 1 lane in each direction, but by 5 it's back fully open so that traffic doesn't get back up. Every day around noon-ish they have large, deep tunnels dug in the road going across.. they are doing some crazy drainage work.
sucks for me though, because all the fresh patch strips going across the road are so much like speedbumps for my little protege5.. going 30 over them it feels like I'm shattering vertebrae every time... *crosses fingers* I hope I don't blow a tire, though I do have road hazard protection haha.

Actually yesterday but didn't feel like posting when I got home.
Road trip to Masontown PA (just outside of Uniontown). My Aunt passed away and I drove in for the funeral. The P5 really made a bad trip into a fun trip.
Could have used some extra power when going up the mountains on I68 in Maryland but it was a blast going down said mountains.
Back in PA I hit a few 8% and 13% grade mountains with twisties. :) I never saw the sign for the mountain on I40 at the top of Uniontown, but WOW....steep and twisty. There were two areas for trucks to pull over and to quote the signs "Stop, check brakes now before proceeding" and the speed limit for trucks was 10mph.
So given the circumstances for my trip - friends, family, memories and the P5 made it bearable.

Thanks again. :) No fender rolling as of yet, but I did get a minor rub on the rear/drivers side yesterday . I had the back loaded with heavy luggage and 3 adults on board; I hit a big "whoop" on the freeway at about 75 mph and got some decent spring compression. Upon close inspection, the tire does not look like it touched the rear lip so I'm at a loss. This happend to me one once before with my MSP wheels mounted up, when I had the wagon loaded up like the Grapes of Wrath coming back from Costco. I'll have to look a little closer. As far as where I sourced my wheels/tires, I got them from Edge Racing http://www.edgeracing.com/ . Following the PIAA link will give you an idea what I paid. I wanted to give a local shop the business, but the couldn't come close to a price match ... I highly recommend them.

Anyway, I kept 1 of the wheels and tires from when I had the wreck as a full size spare. It's been covered in brake dust for like 6 months now and I got sick of getting dirty every time I had to move it to get something out of the utility closet. Anyway, seeing as I'm going to FL this weekend (a 5 hour trip) I figure I may as well clean 'er off and throw er in the trunk. Bungee ftw! ;)

So change of plans, ended up changing the oil tonight in the dark. OMG the oil filter is in possibly the most annoying place ever. Both mine and my friend who was helping me arm's were too long to actually get any type of leverage on it. Ended up his girlfriend got it off for us cause she could fit her whole forearm up above the crossmember and actually have room to turn it. Finally got her put back together, Mobil 1 with OEM filter from the dealer.

Do ya ? I don't know, I think it almost makes any car look tougher ? I don't know that tougher is the right word. Maybe more aggressive is better. Don't get me wrong, I don't want a wheel with a 5" lip on my car. These PIAA's are about 2 3/8". The ones that Bala has are about 1 1/4". I think they look pretty nice.

Just got thinking about it a bit. You will probably have to give me some wheel fitment education. Why wouldn't they fit the P5 ? They come in a 48mm offset on a 7.5" wide wheel. They have the deep lip on there but, isn't the distance from the face of the wheel to the backside of the hub where the offset is calculated going to be the same on any wheel that is 7.5" wide with a 48mm offset ? The deep lip portion doesn't make the wheel any wider. Would it be more that the spoke or center section of the wheels have to come back more aggressively towards the centerline of the wheel to show the lip and make brake caliper clearance an issue ? PIAA's website shows them in their application guide with a fitment for the Protege. Although they do throw in the * agressive fitment may require fender lip modification * note.
^^ wow the mods it would take to fit such a huge lip on a Protege :P

That pic of the wheel most likely would not be the same for the P5 because of our offset, the lip will be way smaller.

Yeah it would look stupid if done properly (big lip in the rear, small lip in the front).. big lip in the front, small in the rear (logical for FWD) would just always, always look stupid.
Yaggie1
09-22-2006, 10:22 AM
PIAA lists the lip as 60mm on the wheel for the protege in their application guide.

Wheel offset is a measurement + or - from the center of the wheel.
Yaggie1
09-22-2006, 11:37 AM
Right, but whether you have a 7.5" wide wheel that has a 1" or a 5" lip, the outside face of the wheel would still be in the same position as long the wheels had the same offset. correct ?
Wheel offset is a measurement + or - from the center of the wheel.

I just installed the OE MAzda autodimming/temp/compass rearview mirror, some of you wanted pics, so here go...(this is not a how-to. The kit comes with easy to follow instructions from mazda and they supply everything you need)
This is a pic of the temperature sensor next to the left foglight housing. The metal flange has two holes that the sensor clips on to.
http://www.msprotege.com/members/GreyMan/MirrorInst%20001.jpg
To the left of radiator, there is an oval hole. The wiring goes through this and up into the engine bay.

This is the wiring coming out of the oval hole into the engine bay.
http://www.msprotege.com/members/GreyMan/MirrorInst%20003.jpg
Coming out of the oval hole, this is how they tell you to route the wiring. I ziptied it and tucked it between the headlight housing and the frame. Then ziptied it again to the left.
http://www.msprotege.com/members/GreyMan/MirrorInst%20004.jpg
This is the route from the headlight to the firewall that Mazda instructs. Please note, I went under all piping, bars, etc.

Running from a-pillar to headliner.

you'd have to lower it like 2". Right now the space i have between the sidewall of the tire and the fender in the back is between 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch.
your car must have been loaded to the max. for me to rub i'd have to bottom out really bad for the sidewall to touch fender.
AND YES, RB SPRINGS COUNT. i personally don't like it whent the tire is partially hidden under the fender....looks retarded to me. the tiniest of fender gaps looks best.

So I've started to do the Basement.
I'm literally building a Theater in my house.. Not a living room with a TV... But a theater.
I started with simply a green line on the floor, added some studs. Framed it up and added Drywall..
I decided that double French doors at the bottom of a long staircase would look cool. They open into each other.
The lower part of the wall is covered in Pine and it separated by a piece of mounding.
SECOND ROW SEATING is going to be a raised part of the floor behind the first couch do that the room will be able to accommodate 10 Adults (or 30 Adults if they are put in a blender first.)
The Drop ceiling has three flush lights. On is a "Nacho Light" it's soul function is to light up the table with the nachos on it.
I wired in 110V to the inside of the wall unit so there would be no power wires to the stereo and all the speaker wires have been run inside the walls with terminals where the speakers are placed around the room.
Basically.. 115" screen in a dark room with a big stereo...
Still working on it so I'll post up some new shots when it's done..
