Today I tried to take my p5 to work and she just wasn't having it.

She's doing the sputtering low idle coughing like running on 1-cyl thing again. She runs, I can rev her and she seems ok, but as soon as I put a load on the engine (like trying to pull out of the driveway) it sputters and stalls.

HELP! So far I've put 2 bottles of dry gas in the tank , examined my cold air intake filter (which is very wet), and disconnected my CAI after the MAF to try and see if it would run without the wet filter.

I wish I could get it out of the driveway to get to an autozone to have them pull the code for the CEL. It goes back and forth between steady and flashing.

I was supposed to be at work like.. now :'(

This is the first time my Protege5 has ever left me stranded, but it's totally my fault in one way or another.

I think I'm going to go back down to the garage and pull the spark plugs and make sure water didn't get under the boots on the spark plug wires.

:'(

I hope autozone has some NGK.. though I could continue to use the sparkcos and just not get them wet. :) the engine got hosed down last night.

One of my roommates is taking me to get plugs/wires right now. The electrode on the two bad spark plugs was red and they were smoking, but the other two plugs were ok to handle (barely warm).

Like I said it's just really slight :)

Well I just made it to work. o_O (pissed)(pissed)(pissed)(pissed)(pissed)(pissed)(p issed)(pissed)

Spark plugs ... 11 dollars (NGK v-power that i'll probably have to replace again tomorrow)
Found a store that carries royal purple synthetic oil, bought a case... 97 dollars.
Holding a hair dryer over the holes where the spark plugs go to try and dry out any water in the combustion chambers of cylinders 1 and 3... priceless (almost).

No store had spark plug wires for me :'( Advance Auto Parts (Partsamerica.com) said that I might be able to order them online through them, because they are listed in the catalog but the computer won't let them place an order for them.

Pep Boys (ugh) listed some shit generic brand for the Protege that was $135 dollars. They didn't have it in stock and it said "EXCEPT PROTEGE5" (?????).

Went to Auto Parts International, and they didn't have it in stock but said they'd have them in within the hour when the truck came. .. another crap brand (and by crap I mean non NGK or non-OEM), so I told him I'd call back if I couldn't find a place that had them in stock. He said he'd order them anyway, which was really nice of him.

The stumbling and misfiring is just as bad. At first when I put the new plugs in it was better (I used excessive amounts of dielectric grease EVERYWHERE so that rain water won't get in) and I made it out of my driveway, but then it got back to being really shitty.

I had to keep it in 3rd gear on the highway at like 5k RPMs to prevent it from misfiring as it only misfires when I get on the throttle any more than a tiny bit. I stopped at a gas station to maybe try some more of that stuff that is supposed to move water from gas, but the station didn't have any so I left my car there and walked to the nearest place that I thought would (a Wegmans grocery store). All they had was STP "Fuel Treatment" that did mention it could remove water, and STP "Injector Cleaner". I bought two of the fuel treatment and one of the Injector cleaner and went to town on my car. Let her idle for like 15-20 minutes and it was still bad, so I just limped to work where I am now.

Sucks, I forgot my briefcase at the house >_<

I don't know where to go from here. I can order new spark plug wires from Mazda (was planning on it anyway, I don't like my Sparkco wires and they clash with my red valve cover now :P).. but maybe my coil packs are messed up? The two cylinders that aren't direct fire are the ones misfiring like crazy. Could the whole water thing have really screwed the spark plug cables?

Sucks that the place that ordered wires for me is so far from here or I'd go there during my lunch break.

omfg this sucks.

oh and is driving the car while it is misfiring and stuff totally terrible for the car? :'( I don't want to hurt her. I should have just rode my bike to work but it would take at least 90 minutes riding the Erie Canal trail to work :'(

Update: SHE LIVES!!!

new spark plug wires FTW. When I was pulling the sparkcos off the center pin electrode thing for my #2 cylinder fell off the wire. .. stupid crap solder job sparkco ARGHA RGHARGHARGH

Now I have some random no name 5mm wires.. they fit in the little holders on the coil packs again lol!

Anyone think there's any chance the water was introduced into my oil? I picked up a case of Royal Purple since I finally found a place that sells it, but I need to take my oil drain pans to get properly recycled somewhere before I can change my oil again.

I should go for a drive now, my car deserves it :) I hope I didn't do any permanent damage with all the misfiring and such.

This weekend ... time for rear motor mount inserts, cleaning the air filter, and while I have things apart maybe I'll clean the EGR again.

i would go and get the codes pulled from the ecu. the cel will only flash when the cats reach 5k degrees, risking MAJOR damage to your engine and cats. and im not liking what i see from the pic of the pugs. if you had a cylinder miss firing then i can under stand a fouled out plug, but all four are fouled out. you may have some other issues with the engine.

Kansei
08-24-2006, 08:51 AM
^^ are the codes stored though? My cel is no longer on.

oh and.. why does everyone else tell me that the CEL flashes on misfire?

The CEL was steady when I was at light throttle or idling, and only flashed if I pushed the pedal a little too far and it kicked into a crazy misfiring mode.

I might take the car in to have some things checked on it soon though. I'm probably at 72k right now and I have the original brake/clutch and power steering fluids. I also wanted to just get a general checkup, like a compression check, some sort of inspection, etc. I was hoping I could wait until my new cams are in so that I could do the cams and timing belt then too but I dunno.

everything that needs to be confirmed/taken into consideration for customs, registration, etc, has been taken care of but due to the nature of the seller's job, he will not sell to a non-us citizen. this is my only obstacle to getting the car.

so yeah, any takers? :)

I was hoping I could wait until my new cams are in so that I could do the cams and timing belt then too but I dunno.

chris, the cel are stored until they are cleared...

Drove to work, parked and as I was walking away another gentleman pulled into the lot and stopped his car. Got out and ran over to me asking all kinds of questions. Saying he had seen it and was looking at getting one (driving an early 90's Sentra).

At first he referred to it as a '3' hatch....gasp. I proceeded to correct him and told him what years they were made and that the '3' replaced the Proto. He wanted to check the engine and seemed impressed. Was happy with the DOHC 2.0....for some reason he thought it might of had a rotary?!?

Finished up by telling him how great the car is and how much fun it is to drive.

All of this and not one mention of 'cute'!!! (alright)

most ppl think that it flashes on misfires bc that is what usually cases the cats to get that hot. liek stated before, the codes will be stored until it reaches a certain amount of drive cycles, depending upon the level of the code, or until its cleared with a scanner. so they should still be there in the ecu under stored codes. and there will be a freeze frame when the code was thrown. tellin you engine load, rpm, throttle position, ect. all that is useful info when diagnosing this stuff

AMAFF- how do you fare in HS. Was also curious what you think the p5 needs to be more competetive. What cars usually give you a run for your money? If you are interested check out www.sjr-scca.org and you will see how I'm doing in the standings so far this year in STS.

Gave my Protege5 the day off and drove the camaro again.
Last time I drove this beast I somehow toasted the Alternator, replaced easily enough.
Last night the car blew out the fan belt and overheated... new belt was $7 and a bit of coolant and good to go. Adjusted the timing and idle a bit to get it to settle down. Man, bringing back memories of why I drive a tiny new car instead of something so old?!? :)

well, I'm still very much a noob, and never ran R-comps, but I'll give this a shot.

Basically your main cometitor in HS is the Mini. To be more competitive in stock class, basically you're gonna need R-comps and you will DEFINATELY need a competition alignment. All a cat back will do is let you hear what the engine is doing (which is helpful), but won't get much performance wise from it. Good struts would help too.

If you're just starting out, I'd run the car on street tires for a while just to get a feel of how the car acts at the limit, and have decent room for error. Once you can be quick on the street tires, you won't (generally) overdrive the R's.

That's about all I could think of off the top of my head. If you have any other Q's, please feel free to ask.

I agree with aMaff.

I run in HS too. All you can really do in terms of improvements is tires and struts/shocks. Maybe a drop in K&N filter and catback.

I ran within a second of a an experienced Mini last sunday. I should be right there with him next few times as I get the feel for the P5. There was also a 2000 Protege LX running that was nowhere where the Mini and I's times.

I did let her take this weekend though, I am at home with my 3 kids and 2 of the neighbor kids.......... Can't quite pile all of them in the 5. I guess the Envoy is good for something aside from just sucking the shit out of gas...........

I know about the basic mods. i was just curious as to what you felt were the pluses and minuses of our car during auto-xing. In all honesty the base model mini is no match. as my car is now i fare very well against mini cooper s, spec-v sentras. even though i lack the power of these cars i have still beaten them on occassion. my last two events have been run on my goodyears. the 1st event with them was a test run( i drove like shit and overwhelmed the tires). now i'm used to them i know i can start matching up with the higher power cars. what is the region you are running in?

Look for a rubber pinstripe remover. Its a hard rubber wheel that attaches to a drill. It makes getting the glue off a P5 so much easier.

You will like the look of your car with the mouldings removed.

The launch? I was having trouble figuring out the best way to get it going on a non-asphalt surface. It was probably just the surface though. Some of the spots were really sandy and had weeds growing in the cracks. We need to go back and nuke 'em with round up. hehe... there were a few karts, lots of modifieds, and a beastily National winning CP car with over 700hp. on the launch too, but it sounded like when you getting on the throttle on corner exit you were getting some hop. It could just be your suspension and those cracks, I don't know. It is possible but overall it didn't feel like it while I was out there. I do know my suspension and other things (forgetting to take other keys off the chain) make a crap load of noise while out there... hehe. The slalom actually wasn't that bad. What was getting most people was that jog into the finish, you were going real fast and got incredibly tight. Plus there was some nice foilage there that added to the oversteer :D A ton of people spun out there. You can see the back push a tiny bit in one of my runs, but not much at all--it kept nice and tidy the whole day! Except on run two where I slaughtered that poor slalom cone... my buddy said I barely hit it but it sure sounds louder in the video.

well earlier today i noticed my left side rear tire was out of air pretty good. so on the way to the gurlfrends i stopped to put air, and as i put air in, i heard air come back out, not a good thing. put the spare on a looked at the tire. it has a small lil hole on the inner upper wall. this can be patched up or repaired right????

on the sidewall? I dunno.

(omg)(omg) :( :( :'( :'(

it's sooo sad to see them go.

I changed my oil today with some 10w30 Royal Purple synthetic and a V6 626 OEM filter.

I was not expecting the oil to be purple!!! (shocked)

.. oh and my old oil (redline full synth) was as black as night coming out after 3k miles or so. I think I might send some of the oil in to get tested to see if I should shorten my interval to like 2k miles with the way I drive her :)

bonesmp5

yes it is sad -- i really thought i would have her for alot longer, but life changes and somtimes you have to ajust in ways you dont like. she had 60k and i feel, one of the cleanest engine bays around, (besides Pirana )

Hell yea Daddy's girl. I have a riding lawnmower that I'm teaching my 5 year old to drive. She has a power wheels quad with the plastic knobby tires. She was getting mad cause she didn't get enough traction. So I drilled a box of large screws into the back tires to give her studded tires. She's happy cause she can go rock crawling (pile of rocks on the side yard) and go mudding when it rains.

When I wash my car she takes care of the rims.

You've finally come over to the good side. :)

it's soooo much greener here.

anyway.. Um my post is about what I forgot to do to my protege5.. yesterday. I went out with one of my roommates after I changed my oil to go get dinner around 9:40pm. Well we headed out and drove around the block, realized that neither of us were hungry, and came back. I didn't bother putting the car in the garage because we were probably going to end up going out once we did get hungry in a couple hours :P

Well that didn't happen. My car sat outside overnight; windows down, moonroof open, Alpine face plate installed, ipod jacked in, no club on the steering wheel. (shocked)

All is well though. I guess maybe this neighborhood is a lot safer than I thought, that or a thief looked down my driveway (car is behind the house but you can see it from the road) and saw a wagon and ran away screaming. :P

That's why I love where I live right now. Very quiet and safe. Hell, we leave the house open all the time unless we go away for a long time. I've accidently left the garage door open many nights as well. Guess it helps to have a police neighbor with a blue undercover Crown Vic.

:P

Yeah my neighborhood itself is quite safe. There's neighborhood watch in effect big time. Everyone is really friendly and always outside talking with eachother. If there was any suspicious activity someone would notice it. I'm just a bit leery of the fact that our basement door was busted in and wouldn't latch anymore (had to replace the door frame), and the garage door still has a hole in it where someone kicked out the wood panel to unlock the door (the key hole has been screwed with big time on that door too).

I'm just waiting on my landlord to fix stuff. I wish the company I worked for had more consumer-oriented products so I could do a custom access control and fire/security system on the house, rather than going through our main competitor ADT :P

Yeah PM me the address too when you send a message to mark. We'll keep your extremely low mileage P5 "safe". :P

p.s. kinda random but I hit 72,500 today :D

Going for a drive during my lunch break was most excellent. I was reminded just how much I freakin love this car. The syling is to die for, the way it steers and sounds and handles is just droolworthy. I really need to get around to buying the new gauge cluster and all the little plastic clips and such that I've broken so that my car can be at 100%.

I think today when I get back from work I might polish my header so that I don't have to be embarassed to open my hood anymore :P

this was actually yesterday, but i rinsed her off (no time for a proper wash :( ), and then went out looking at some potential sisters for her

92 mx-3 was first on the list - and an absolute no-go. too many problems and wasn't in very good condition either despite the lower km.

94 626 was second... this is a definite possibility. original owner, less than 200K km, all maintenance records. car looked and drove like it was maybe 6 years old. only problem was the CEL came on halfway through my test-drive, so i definitely have to find out what that was about. plus, only the wife was home (husband/owner was in class last night) and she was a typical woman when it comes to cars - didn't know jack. so i'll find out more on the car tonight.

3rd on the list was a 94 mx-6 but damn dealer couldn't find either the car or the paperwork on it, so hopefully i find out more about it in the next day or two.

i still really want my neighbour's '87 323 LX, but i have a feeling he won't want to part with it this fall yet. i told him to name his price, so i'll keep my fingers crossed but i have my doubts :(

It was an uprght vacuum. I put the upright part on the passenger seat and was using the hose attatchment in the passenger seat. I think the way it was placed the rotating brush thing on the bottom caught something on the seat and tore it.
