After driving more today and going outside to clean it, I'm done. I'm so disgusted with the squeaks, rattles, dings and scratches that I'm going back to stock. Look for a HUGE FS thread coming soon...

What's the deal? This whole thread seems to be divided in half on the whole mod scene. Are there any mods worth doing to my p5?
Yall's is confusifying me!
Mods are worth it, they make me love my car more and more. Yeah, they may introduce noises and rattles or make the car a bit uncomfortable, but the same goes for any car in that regard.
Just have fun with your car and love it. Yeah, it would take a lot of money to make it into a 300-400 HP race monster, but the protege isn't the only car around that is like that.

^^^ Agreed 100%. All the little pains you get from modding this car are definitely worth it. I have AWR motor mounts all the way around and I removed the VTCS from my IM so my car shakes violently and has a rough idle - but you know what, I LOVE IT!!! I love the fact that I can feel my engine turning and that I can feel the bumps in the road - it makes me feel like I'm almost "one with my car." I drove my parent's '94 Camry around yesterday and hated it - it felt like a was driving a boat with all the leaning and bouncing. I don't think I will ever get sick of modding this car...

Thanks for the kind words guys, but I'm just sick of it. I'm not kidding when I say everyday there's a new scratch, rattle or squeek. RI roads AND drivers are the worst, this is my daily and I'm sick of seeing this beauty ruined. Pictures don't always tell the true story. I'm putting it back to stock so I can just drive it. Drive it without fear of worrying about rock chips, potholes, other drivers, people not knowing how to park, something new coming loose and rattling, blowing my engine, etc, etc, etc... I just want to drive it and not care if something bad happens. I've already pulled a bunch off the car since the last post, FS thread going up in approximately 20-30 minutes. I need to shower and take this all in first.

wow. I think that might be the shortest time someone has ever kept their car turboed. I'm glad I'm pretty satisfied staying NA, it seems that a lot of people lose interest or get frustrated with their P5s after they go turbo.
Just do whatever makes you happier with the car.. like go back to NA, get some 45 series tires so the RI roads don't kill you, maybe soften up the suspension a tiny bit, and I'm sure the car will be a much better daily driver.

Just get a crazy ass beater truck or jeep for bad roads, bad weather. Then you'll have something to go all carefree in & everyone else will have to do the worryin. Oh, yeah, tested the bike rack/factory rack combo with 2 bikes @ 115 or so...they sang but never budged.

laid eyes on my baby for the first time in 6 days... though, i wasn't without a mid-blue p5 fix during that time - a friend and i took his car to the coast for the BC Mazda Madness meet and made a short vacation of it.
went over to the island and took the highway to Tofino, which is on the west coast of the island. 3 hours (one way) of twisty roads through some of the most beautiful scenery i think i've ever seen. recommended speed limit was 60kph, 20kph around some of the corners... hahahahaha let's just say we broke the speed limit many, many times. :D my friend has the tein coilovers on his car, set on the firmest setting. those corners were AMAZING!!!! def going back again. too bad it's so far away, or i'd go every week!

oh crap when I was wiping down that surface the other day I think I may have removed some of that sealant. Anyone know what it is so I can apply some or if it's really that important?
oh and .. at 71k miles my timing belt looked mint still, even with a LOWES "assorted spring pack" spring acting as the tensioner spring. One of these days I'll have time to open her back up and fix that.

I had the ladder bar. You really can't tell a difference and since it's tucked way underneath you can't see it. Just note that you will need a grinder to cut down 2 little metal nubs on the subframe. They are part of drainage holes and will cut into the bar if not removed.

The CF Hood Saga (continued):
Last night I spent 8 hours with my hood (it's like I'm visiting it in the hospital, which is quite appropriate considering how gimped it was). Last night was the FOURTH time it was fully painted. When I got there around 8 work on sanding down the old primer had started. three coats of primer were applied, and then it was baked for a little and wetsanded. I've never seen such detailed wetsanding. He even had me go over it with my hand for a second opinion to see if I could find any rough spots that he had missed. The hood was so amazingly smooth it was just crazy. He had completely eliminated the slight ripple texture that the CF hood had. We went down into the mixing room and made up a quart of sunlight silver using the really precise PPG computer system for measurement and mixing. The painter adjusted the mix oh so slightly to get it to be as close as possible to the color of my car. I think he had to make it a tiny bit lighter. It's fun though, Sunlight silver is like 157 parts of some silver color, then 1.7 of a black and 1.5 of a white-ish. Add some thinner and bam sunlight silver :P
So he went at it, hit it with 2 coats of base, tacked and did all that fun stuff. I went up, saw the hood baking, and was absolutely amazed. It was finally perfect. I went down into the shop to take the hood off my car (I have some pics from this on my computer back at the house) and slap it in the hatch. I go back up to the paint booth as he is releasing the door, coming out shaking his head. :'(
He said "I just can't believe it. It was going so well and then the paint just came right up". I went in the booth, and sure enough it had. 95% of the hood was perfect. There was just the area right near the front edge of the hood on the ridge that starts near the driver's side headlight... the paint got all screwed up there. Not even screwed up like someone would see the imperfections if they got up really close to it (that was Monday's paint job, paint job #3 for me with the hood, #4 in it's lifetime)... we're talking like from 20 feet away someone would saw "oh wow what's wrong with that hood". :'(
We took the hood out of the paint booth and he went back to block sanding it again, though he vowed never to paint the hood again himself. It was 4am and he said he was going to just finish block sanding it and leave it for the top paint guy at his dad's body shop (where he works during the day and does freelance stuff at night) to do tomorrow. I'm picking the hood up today at 05:30PM when I get off from work, hopefully with it on my car and not battered and in the trunk :'(
Wish me luck.
Oh and I've decided. If the Mazda2 doesn't come to the states, this will be my next car. http://www.globalsuzuki.com/swift/index.html I think they are AWESOME looking, though not a Mazda. At least. He said in materials alone it is costing him about $150-200 each time he has to paint it. That's not including that he has easily spent over 24 man-hours working on it. It's been a remarkeable learning experience for both of us though. Words of wisdom: don't take a freakin grinder to a carbon fiber hood and grind right through the freakin gelcoat! just scuff it, primer, and paint over the shit! No offense to whoever painted it before but damn.. they must have done like 12 layers of paint, and it was a single stage paint too. sucks that they sanded down to bare CF since it is making it impossible to get shit to adhere and last through the baking process.

Putting the finishing touches on my home-made camera mount for this weekend's autox. Used the how-to. I'll be sure to post my pictures, and I'll see what I can do to post videos of my runs.
Adjusted my TWM knob to be higher = more leverage = better/easier shift feel.
Made/installed my diy grounding kit (4-5 days ago). Just used leftover wire I had from my previous car's ground kit. Don't know if it's due to this (probably not), but my gas mileage has been awesome so far (1/2 tank = 200 miles of city driving).

Don't bother with the O2 simulator if you can deal with a CEL until you actually get a 2nd O2 mounted (like after your primary cat or something, with the MAM midpipe). But yeah if you aren't planning on adding the 2nd O2 sensor back into the mix I guess it makes sense..

I'll be doing more driving than my wallet (yay premium fuel, oh well it was my choice) would care to think about right now. Rochester - Albany - CT - Boston - Rochester.
Hopefully the new hood (yeah, still not on the car) doesn't get "broken in" with rock chips too quickly.
I gotta change my oil before I embark too. I'm at like 3600 miles on my redline full synth and it's already the blackest of blacks. Maybe I need more filtration than the Mazda 626 V6 filter affords.
Does anyone have any experience with the non-Mobil1 over the counter (not redline or amsoil, something I can buy in store today) full synthetic oils? I read some controversy over Castrol Syntec because I guess it is reformulated crude oil that just has some of it's molecular properties tweaked (their definition of synthetic isn't the same as Mobils).
oh and my reason for not going with Mobil1? Well I'm a member of exxposeexxon.com if that is any indication. I will not contribute to their record profits while they willingly ignore their environmental destruction.

good idea.. the "paper" backing should be a lot more durable that way. I need to decide on an oil brand ASAP, I sorta kinda want to do my oil change today. I think I'll be taking it to Monro muffler to get it done, but I'll give them my oil and filter. I have the time to do it myself but the roommate who had supplied the jack and jackstands at my former apartment is the one we kicked out :P and I haven't bought new stuff yet.

well today I looked around in the garage for the dynamic damper that is missing from my tranny side motor mount (#4 mount). Anyone bored and want to remove theirs and see if it makes the car drive like crap? I really want to get this sorted out somehow before I do a ton of driving this weekend.
I'm still looking for suggestions for over the counter synthetic motor oil brands.
I basically have to choose between Castrol, Valvoline, and Quaker State. How do they stack up vs. mobil1? I didn't order enough Redline synthetic oil so I'm all out and I need to change before I embark :)

I didn't order enough Redline synthetic oil so I'm all out and I need to change before I embark :)I have been using eurospec 0-30 castrol syntech. It seems to hold up better than the mobil 1 did. It looks the same from change to change where the mobil 1 changed colors & clarity. Viscosity also stayed pretty much the same. All my changes are mostly in the 5k range using a purolator micronic 626 filter or maybe a k&n on occasion. I live in a hot climate (TX) so not sure if that had anything to do with it. Just my 2 cents.

My Mobil1 is the blackest of blacks, even after just 2k on mobil1 extended performance. The Redline oil I'll still have to see. I know it didn't look too black up under my valve cover but I dunno.
0w30 though? are the numbers different for euro spec or something? The only thing that I don't like that I've read about Syntec is that when it first came out (don't know if it's still true) it was based mostly off of real oil that was just modified to have slightly better molecular properties. I want to limit the amount of dino oil that my car uses (sucks that I'm stuck running gasoline through her all the time :P) wherever I can.

Not sure about the numbers being different just for euro spec. It says on the bottle it comes from Germany & is spotty to even find. Seems like it would black up more if was still enhanced dino. On a stay on topic note, changed out the SRI prop since it broke from wiggling & me bending it to mount how I needed it too. This time mounted it to something that moves with the engine & not in static position on body where the forces on the engine movement from torque wood work on it again. Used hole in the tab coming off the tranny mount that also has a wire loom mounted on the end of it.

Anyone have any ideas for a temporary hood vent rain guard? It's raining like crazy right now and I just have a towel over it (the engine is cold so no worries about burning up my header or anything) which is probably soaked by now. I stuck aluminum foil in there (because it should be able to tolerate the heat) but of course it looked absolutely ridiculous.. definitely not something I can do while going to Mazda Zoom Zoom Live tomorrow. My current plan is to stuff a black trash bag in the vent (from the underside) and then back it with a couple layers of aluminum foil. The foil will act to reflect heat and also hold the trash bag in place.
This probably isn't the best place to ask but.. the rain guard isn't something a Mitsu dealership would keep in stock right?
Bolted up my BBK (MSP rotors and calipers), adjusted the parking brake and took a long hard look at how in the hell I could possibly fit three baby seats in it.:D

Ran her off the road.
Was in cheyenne canyon approaching a hairpin. Ive done the turn many times. Usually I just redline second gear and brake hard once I hit redline. This time, for some reason, I hit the 5k in 2nd and shifted to 3rd. It was too much. Right after I put my foot down on the accelerator after the shift I knew I had made a mistake. I ended up hitting the brakes about 10ft later and 5mph faster than I usually do on that turn. Locked up the brakes and skidded off the road and into a gravel patch. A better driver could have pulled it off, but I couldnt. I stopped just in time to avoid slamming into the hilside. I would have been stuck in the gravel pit, but my buddy in the car being the burly guy that he is was able to push us out. Nice 100 foot long skidmarks were left :D
No real impact, but my bumper now has some war wounds- Just some scraches.

today i took her to the local sjr auto-x. she performed well. i was matched very well against a supposed to be much quicker se-r spec v in my class( i think i might have beaten him...have to wait for final times to be posted). if only this car had some balls it'd be a smoker on the course. what a great day though for racing.

Yeah like it was said the vinegar helps with hard water spots.. My p5 has some serious spots too, i've been using scratch-x off and on and now vinegar with no real success. Both help, but neither make it all go away. :( I might have to break down and just buy a random orbital buffer and some polish.. : /

My CAI *may* have sucked up some water.. either that or during the extreme downpours when I was on the Mass Pike going back to Rochester from Boston (Zoom Zoom Live) got something wet through my hood vent that wasn't happy about getting wet :P
car bogged down, CEL started flashing, car made fun rumbly sound like a boxer engine but I'm sure it wasn't a good thing to be driving with. I went to the nearest rest stop to figure things out.
Either I sucked up water, something got wet through the vent, or the full service gas station I went to screwed up and put 87 in even though I said to put 93 in. I'm thinking it isn't the latter because I heard the MP3 ECU copes just fine with 87, it just retards the timing back to basically the P5 ECU specs. I put a bottle of octane boost in just in case.. ran the car in the parking lot, was still sputtering, gurgling, backfiring, etc. The I put some "dry gas" (basically just isopropyl from what I can tell) into the tank and kept running it, revving occassionally to see if it got any better. Eventually it got to the point where it almost completely sounded normal, though with the CEL one, and I continued driving. I stopped atj the next rest stop and let the car sit for a while off. That did the trick, no more CEL and it was normal for the rest of the trip.
This has happened with my car before a few times, but always in the winter. I'm beginning to think my CAI is managing to suck water up :'(

Also autocrossed yesterday. Ran very close to a mini cooper in HS.
Course was amazingly long at 1:30. The Z06's were hitting upwards of 75mph and everyone was getting air on a couple of bumps.
Managed to be a 1.5 seconds faster than my friend in a RSX-S who was running in GS.

i'm in STS because of my intake. but now i've got all kninds of mods so it helps to keep me somewhat competative in my class, though i lack the get-up-and-go of other cars in my class.

This was just a regular Cooper... not an S. There was an S running in GS with DOT slicks... got fastest pax of the day. Awesome driver.
I really want to stay in HS so I can be somewhat competitive. It's the only reason I haven't gotten an intake. I'm going to get a K&N panel filter and (SCCA legally) mod my intake box to get the most out of it. I'll also try to do everything I legally can in HS, as far as other mods go.
Do you know if we're allowed to do suspension mods that came stock on the MP3? The suspension would be stock mazda... therefore "stock"... but I'm guessing that since in theory, those parts weren't offered on the P5, it would make them "illegal" for stock class.

ok that makes more sense with the plain jane cooper. as far as i know you can't do suspension in HS. you can however change tires as long as they stay stock size. look for some sticky rubber. also check scca.org for official rules as to the mods you can do. I knind of wish i had tried to stay in HS but i wanted to do these mods anyway. All i have to do is finnish the exhaust and then i will have a chance of matching the faster(more powerful)cars.

Just went over the SCCA rules, which actually say a ground kit is legal as long as it benefits the sound system and nothing else.
Now I know that a grounding kit maybe smooths out your idle and nothing more... but at least it's legal for Stock class.
Looks like I could run Tokico's and still be stock... hmm...
