View Full Version : What have you done to your P5 today?

Not a whole hell of alot these days. Too damn busy....it's summa' time! Instead of driving the P5, I was hauling around the mountains in a Ford Excursion. What a friggin boat. Oh well....we will see what's in store by the end of the year for the P5.
terminals are in!!

Think I wasted the motor tonite.Got a BAD feeling that I am another victim of the VICS screw.............Was leaving the golf course tonite and as soon as I started it up I could hear something pinging around. It was bogging like a bitch and then sure enough, the check engine light..........Pull the plugs and the first plug closest to the driver side is bent.

Yeah, 67,000 miles and no warranty. I also checked way back when and mine didn't get a recall notice............
aMaff
07-12-2006, 08:57 PM
Talk to your dealership. If they're any good, they'll take care of you anyway. I've read on here of ppl who weren't specifically in warranty / in the recall range, but got it fixed anyway. If not, call and / or write a letter to Mazda NA, and they should be able to put some pressure on the service dept.
Yaggie1
07-12-2006, 09:02 PM
Well, got some minor good news. I think it spit out the screw. I regapped the plugs and put them back in. Fired it up real quick and I got no pinging going on and the smooth idle is back. I am going to talk to the dealer tomorrow and see what they tell me. If all else fails, my brother in law has a scope at work and check it out for me too. I would like the dealer to just take care of it but, I don't know how much faith I have in them to do the right thing. I am in the process of taking off the exhaust mani right now to see if there is a screw in the precat screen. I am crossing my fingers that the cylinder and exhaust valve isn't fubared......
aMaff
07-12-2006, 09:05 PM
yeah, I'd take it to Mazda and see first. Have them scope it and do a compression test on that cylinder. Also, other screws may be about to come out, so you they need to install the repair kit / whole new manifold. Also, if you fail the compression test, they need to repair the whole engine. Like I said, if they don't treat you right, take it to another dealer if there is 1 around, and if you still can't get this straightened, start getting Mazda NA to put pressure on the dealer
Yaggie1
07-12-2006, 09:08 PM
The shitty thing is that I have a second intake mani with the VTCS removed and the VICS lock tited and ready to go on the car. Just haven't got around to tearing into it yet and installing............

07-12-2006, 09:31 PM
hehe, yeah. I'd get this taken care of before I do that (at least you know you have a good motor to put it on). And obviously, don't mention that little tid bit to your service dept lol

Well today my P5, unlike most of them (it seems), is doing just fine. Actually, even better. I gave her a wash between 11pm and 1am and 6 and 6:30am, oh and I did a little polishing under the hood and finally torqued down the bolts on my front driver side strut, no more noises!
Now I need to figure out why my driver side headlight suddenly decided that it was a good idea to get a ridiculous amount of condensation in it. From the way it felt, I think my hid bulb wasn't clamped down as tight as it should have been. It's all fixed as of now, but the condensation is still there. I removed the high beam bulb hoping that it will air dry or something, but yeah I bet it'll just get worse since it is very hot and humid today. I don't have time to take off my front bumper to remove the headlight and dry it out today, I have to drive 9 hours to NH after work bah!

today I slept in my car.. well yesterday and today. I left for the 6 hour drive back home (a stopping point on the way to New Hampshire) at 10:30pm and by the time I was 90 minutes away I was far too tired (asleep at the wheel a few times a minute) so I pulled into a rest area and slept until 3am. Then I got up, was all disoriented (had to sleep in the driver seat not reclined all that much because there was a mountain bike chillin in the back seat behind me), and got back to CT. It wasn't all that uncomfortable sleeping in that seat though. It's a first for me though, I usually sleep in the back seat when for some reason I'm all tired and stuff.

Glad you were smart enough to pull over. Too many people try to "stick it out" and hurt themself or someone else on the road. I had a horrible wreck 4 years ago from falling asleep. Needless today I was within an inch of my life. I rolled my Jeep 2 times in the road and ended up in a 8 foot ditch.Somehow came out w/ only minor injuries. Be safe.

You know that part in the Dukes of Hazzard theme song where is says some day the mountain might get'm but the law never will?
Mingus Mountain on Highway 89A has 158 curves in a 12 mile stretch.
Mingus Mt took a bite out of my left front fender.
I was in a 180 left curve then a quick 90 degree right. As I was in the apex of the right curve I hit washboards (ripples) in the road and lost traction and bounced into the guardrail with my left headlight.
So far it looks like I took out my left headlight, left fog, left fender, left fender support, radiator support, lower grille, and the front bumper.

the rpf1s wont be in until the end of august(backorder). i wanted a wheel and these where my second choice. the 50mm offset increased the weight of the wheel so i stuck with the 42. the 42 mm will give me a wider track anyway. i don't think i will have any rubbing probs. i really just needed some wider rubber for auto-xing. in time i might get the rpf1s and put competition grade rubber on them and use them just for racing.

Ah, gotcha. Yes some 16" RPF1s with r-comps would be hot :D Hopefully you don't rub. I rubbed with 215/45/17 on my 50mm Koseis. Depends how low you are and the amount of camber you have. Rolling my fenders fixed that problem. You have a lower OD tire so that should help.

Just blacked out the headlight bezels... Turned out better than I thought it would. Since I used 1200 degree black with ceramic in it, it kinda has a satin finish, instead of flat black. I used this how-to:
http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=114394
One thing I hated about this mod is how the turn signal surround is also painted. To me, that just doesn't look good- I mean, the low and high beams have chrome around them, why shouldn't the turn signal? So with some very careful masking, I was able to keep it chrome. Sorry for the crappy pics- best my camera phone can do. I may be able to get some better ones near sunset tonight.

Thanks, Breeegz. It required about 30mins extra per light to mask it off, and a hella sharp knife, but it really wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. My advice would be to use small strips of tape rather than larger ones, and overlap by 50%. And, like always- it looks so much better in person than in pics. I really wasn't sure how much I would like the mod, cause i didn't want flat black- but I did want high heat paint. I used "Duplicolor High Heat with ceramic" black- #DH1602, and it has a nice satin finish. I put on abour 4-5 thin coats, which produced very nice results.

^^^ The exact reason mine has not been washed in over three weeks. She needs a washing badly and I feel bad for it being so long - that and a nice waxing. Maybe once I get my 03 MSP Racing Hart's on...

I won't dare try to load the full-sized pics (on cell phone) but from the thumbnails it looks like you did what I've dreamed of doing for years. Too bad I didn't think of it until a few weeks after I already sanded and painted the whole thing. I was going to do it on the low and high beam as well though, just a narrow 2mm or so strip of chrome near the edge.

oh don't you worry... the bug is here and never left... not since my 240sx.
Plans are minimal (for now)... just an intake, rear sway bar, short shifter.
But I foresee a fully built suspension (as was the 240) and an exhaust...
I'm currenlty trying to decide between the TWM shifter/bushing set or Kartboy... any suggestions?
i heard with rear sway bars you need aftermarket struts/shocks, because the tabs for the endlinks on the stock ones will break, under the load from the stiffer sway bar.

I have 102,000 miles on stock struts with Eibach springs and a SR Motorsports 19mm swaybar. No problems with that set up.
Anything bigger than 19mm would worry me.

I have the progress 22mm rear sway bar, stock struts (at least for a bit longer til the illuminas show up & magically land on the car while I sleep) 1.3 lowering springs & stock endlinks without any problems with tabs. I do get a good bit of 3 wheel motion entering driveways that are angled much at all. BUT...with the illuminas will come the AWRs with the grommet silencer treatment. Been this way for 2 years or so they'll hang if not autoXing the hell out of them & the struts aren't complaining yet either.

3-wheel action is so freakin fun. My car does it quite a bit, and I'm just running tokico HPs with the MSP rear sway lowered on goldline springs. I actually left my car parked overnight on 3 wheels because the parking area in front of our summer condo is angled just enough to get her on 3.

Nice! (thumb) There's a set screw on the side of your cap that will let you rotate and line up the Mazdaspeed logo ...
Well, I tore down and rebuilt the struts (again). The definitive bumpstop reference is coming tomorrow ...
OMG NO NOT THE BUMPSTOPS!! the Tokico HP install guide specifically said to leave the bumpstop alone because it would invalidate the warranty if it were modified. hmm
well I reparked my P5 today, and in a few minutes I'm going to toss my mountainbike in the back seat (don't worry, seats are protected) and probably drive to Rhode Island to pick up yet another CF hood off someone on the forums :P

My Tokico install guidlines recomended cutting the bumpstops 1/3 - 1/2 (but not more than 1/2). I didn't cut them ... and decided something was wrong after living with this setup (Tokico HP's and Espelirs) for a few weeks. For the record, I didn't actually "modify" any of the bumpstops (shady). More to come ...

Sarcastro
Sarcastro is one of the students of Tick (http://www.thetick.ws/tvheroes.html#tickcartoon)'s superhero class, and he holds the distinction of being the only one to flunk. He fights crime with the razor sharp sting of sarcasm, but he needs to improve his aim as he usually uses sarcasm on the other superheroes as well. Some of his lines are absolutely hilarious, and it's too bad he doesn't show up until the last episode of the series; they could have really used him.
Appearances: Tick vs. Education (http://www.thetick.ws/car36.html)
Sarcastro was voiced by Charlie Adler

You wouldn't have wanted my old CF hood, but it's already sold anyway. It was the APC hood. It's now doing duty on a crazy LX/MP3/MSP racecar protege that needed some more weight reduction.

what is the weirdest combo of items you've ever had in your Protege5 trunk (maybe I should start a new thread)?
Right now:
- 1 Fiber Images CF Evo-style hood (painted Blazing Yellow)
- A massive patio umbrella from Ikea
- A full-size spare (17x7 Exel Speed w/ 215/40/17 Ecsta MX)
- my subwoofer
- suitcases from my trip to NH
- 2 laptops
- a cast iron umbrella stand
- oh yeah my mountain bike
- a couple backpacks of random stuff.
now the trick will be to see if I can fit all that plus a very large treadmill, a 6x9 foot area rug, and a 27" CRT television :P ... in the truck of course, all that in the protege5 would just be ridiculous :P

edit: just to clarify I'm not a packrat or anything.. ask anyone who knows me, my car is usually totally empty. I was just on my way back from a weeklong trip up to the summer condo in NH and stopped by to pick up the CF hood on the way back to my parent's house. :)

Nice! It is funny you mention this right now. I 'test fit' our luggage in the trunk today and was pleasantly surprised....it all fit. Looks like the P5 gets to trek to Myrtle Beach this year. Fit 2 large, 2 small and a duffle bag in without the cargo cover and the seat up....gotta save room for the kids.
Nice p/u on the hood too. Was contemplating buying it on Friday due to the hail damage from earlier this week. Still haven't called my insurance agent, guess I better get off my butt. lol

ding ding. the winner. got my new wheels yesterday at work. so happy. they look better than i expected.
as for centercaps redhot i was going to put them on when i got home from work because i rushed to get the wheels on before my work closed but when i got home realized that the caps needed to be put on before the wheels got mounted to the hub.....doh!!! they aren't snap in caps. i guess when i put the sway bar on this week i can redo the caps.

yeah 14.1 lbs from what tirerack lists. i will have to weigh them to see how acurate that is. the wheel/tire combo did feel slightly lighter than the stock wheels w/ the toyos(toyos were lighter than the stock dunlops). i can't wait to hit the auto-x course in a few weeks.

That is just awesome man, I love those wheels but have only really seen them on Honda's and Nissans. They have rwd offsets for those and sell them for 240's, they look sick. Congrads and if you do weigh them please report the difference in weight, with tires mounted of course ;-)

ok so i just weighed my stock rims with 195/50/16 toyo tpt tires. it came to 35lbs nearly on the dot. weighed two rims and the same weight. when i pull off my wheels this week i will weigh my new wheels and tires.

i've seen aftermarket ignition wires but having them lay on the whole valve cover cuz they are too long doesnt make sense to me. what is the purpose of them being so long? unless they were designed for a totally different car.

How well did that stripper work? I've got this blazing yellow hood that needs to be stripped :P I wonder how that would work with the gelcoat that's underneath the paint. I'm just going to take it to a plae and get it painted but I was wondering if the paint could be removed.. I like how terbow had it completely painted but I'm a ricer at heart and want to see at least a little CF :)

the "Aircraft" stripper works a little too well for JUST removing certain layers.
it took of clear, base, primer in 1 1/2 coats (and that was wheel paint).
this stuff will take it down to bare metal if you us a little too much or leave it on a little too long. I'd recommend using something more mild
Drove around trying to bottom out the suspension. Here's a teaser ...

No internal damage from the screw. Had a borescope in it yesterday as well as a compression test, leak down test. All is good again.
