View Full Version : Anyone done tranny work?

Got the dreaded OD off flashing. The code that came out was P0745, Pressure Control Solenoid malfunction. My local dealer has one for about $90, and in looking at the workshop manual, it doesn't look too tough to get at it. However, we all know reality can often be quite different once you actually try to do the work.

Has anyone done any solenoid replacement on their Protege tranny? If so, how tough was it and how were the results? I'm willing to risk $90 and some time, as opposed to taking it in and being charged who knows what, if I have a reasonable chance of fixing this myself.

Vehicle is a 2000 Protege, 1.6, I believe it is the FN4A-EL tranny.

Thanks for the help!

Never mind, went ahead and tried it. Turned out to be one of the easiest things I've ever replaced on this car. Just dropped the pan and it was right there. Didn't even have to remove the solenoid valve body.

Ohm'd out the old one and it was indeed bad, read open. New one is now in, no more flashing light and seems to be driving well. I'll update if there are any problems down the road. So far as I can tell right now though, if any of you wind up with this P0745 code, I'd definitely look at doing it yourself. Minimum quote I had from a shop was $800 and go from there. Same would hold true for any of the PWM or on/off solenoid replacements, they were all right there, easy to get at.

great to hear that you had the problem taken care of man. Nothing beats that feeling when you do it yourself, heh. Keep it up and thanks for useful info!
