WEll I was just wondering if there is a interest on this and if it could be done.

I feel that its a damn good engine considering what can be done. It has the same power with a bit more torque and bound to get excellent gas milage. And it looks like a boosted engine that can easily take 300 hp with some modification. Would be a nice project if the engine fits.

Im jsut so use to seeing old hondas with K20s and various DSMs with different generations 4g engines.

anything is possible with alot of money - the layout of the engine itself is radically different than the FS engine and would require tons of custom work to get it in the car

Are there any engines similar to the FS in terms of layout and of the engine itself?

i just realized i screwed up that part of my sentence :( lol thanks

Haha, my question still stands though... Are there any engines similar in layout to the FS - i.e. would be an "easy" swap?

not really, the FSZE from japan would bolt in but without all the JDM wiring and electronics it would do you no good

Oh well, according to http://web2.airmail.net/theman/protegefaq/engine.html it doesn't seem to be much of an upgrade over the MSP setup, anyways. About equal HP, less torque, and higher compression ratio so it's maybe harder to boost (or does it have stronger internals)?

I was just curious because all my friend talks about is a swap for his Civic. =P

I realize you can do it if you want to throw money. im just questioning if its as easy as engine mounts, custom exhaust and custom radiator hose. I guess I dont know if its dramatically different but it is a good engine. Iw as thinking they were similar enough for maybe those who are interested to persue it...and wouldnt be that hard of a swap. But then again I know nothing about the engine. New engine + turbo kit maybe a good chunk of change and maybe impractical for alot of us. But eventually when the car ages it could be a popular swap.

Thinking that the Mazdaspeed 6 has 276 hp and 280 lbs of torque with a DI head. And the MAzdaspeed 3 rumored to have 250 hp without the DI head. Its aluminum block but I think it can easily handle 300 hp. You know how MAzda always engineer there cars with big margin of safety so if the MS6 can boost up to 276 hp im sure it can actually handle more. Its the same MZR engine but 2.3L. It is aluminum block but the Mazdaspeed cars all have the same high compression MZR. And I beleive its also specially coated from factory...well thats what they claim about the 2.0L version in the MX-5

I was talking about the FS-ZE engine. As for the rest, including the MZR, I think they're drastically different from our 3rd gen Protege engines. I looked at Corksport's JDM engine page for reference - It lists the cars the engines COULD be installed into and even then half of them were asterisked (*) in that they're still a hard fit... And the 1999+ Protege only showed up under the FS-ZE.

Edit - Just noticed this:

custom engine mounts, custom exhaust, custom fuel system (the mazda3 uses a returnless system, the engine is mounted reverse of our own, etc) to say the least. it would not be near the realm of easy. custom engine management (the ecu and wiring system is radically different).

the FSZE would be more difficult to boost properly thanks to its high compression. less overall torque would put it into a slower acceleration category than a mazdaspeed.

personally i want to see someone shove a KLZE into one of these cars.

Is Mazda still making the FE3?
