I'm going to try posting this here, if I do it wrong please let me know. There is a group buy for AWR's baffled oil pan being organized over on mazda3.com. Here's the link: http://www.mazda3club.com/showthread.php?t=40949 Price will be $375 shipped which is a good deal compared to $399 list plus shipping. Yes I have a vested interest becasue I am on the list! Five people minimum are needed. More info is on that thread.

there is finally a baffled oil pan out for us. nice

I am also on the list! One more to go and we can start sending in the money to get them shipped out! Now I know some of you over here may be a little skeptical of Matty for whatever reason, but note this from Matty...."Just FYI I just completed a $4500 GB on our SHO forum for clutches without a hickup. Everything was paid for via money order and everyone is happy."

So I know a lot of people wanted one of these, now come through, put your money down, and we can all have a nice baffled oil pan!

Scott.

Holy Cost Batman!

Yeah, it's expensive, but not as much as a new engine. I love taking corners fast, and I prefer not to have to worry about grenading my engine while doing it. It is from AWR and their products are great. Plus you have a choice of the standard silver powdercoating or gold zinc plating at no additional cost.

Bingo! Your first reason is basically the same as mine...It's certainly better than a new engine!

the design of the pan internally prevents oil starvation in individual cylinders when you make very hard turns.

Too bad Mazda did not copy Porsche's 20 year old design. I agree that this will be a #2 Mod after the motor mounts for the die hard Auto-X Protege driver. Long overdue... Thanks Tony for making stuff for us Protege Owners.

This is the first post in the thread over on mazda3club.com for those who are having trouble getting on that site:

"This is an AMAZING investment for anyone that wishes to drive their protege the way it's meant to be driven (hard and fast in the turns).

For those that don't know, the protege oil pan is not baffled and under lateral G's oil will slosh away from the pick up tube and dry lock the motor. This is VERY common. AWR is a very well known ESTABLISHED company that specializes in mazda performance parts. Quality has never been an issue on any AWR products I've ever seen. I use their front and rear motor mounts. I've seen their custom headers. They are first class all the way.

This GB is for 5 buyers. MSRP is $399+shipping. The GB will go for $375shipped for 5 buyers. They have 9 units in stock. Any more than 9 will be on the "second list". The "second list" will still pay up front but will be about 3 weeks delayed due to AWR's participation in the SEMA show. I would need to place the orders before hand so they could build them immediately after they return. So 9 are ready to go but #10 on is going to have an additonal wait period. The placement on the buy will be done by payment recieved date.

Because of problems in the past I'm going to request all payments be made via money order directly to me. This is a safe way to send payment for buyers as it's easily traceable. Also it helps me keep track of names/addresses etc.

You can go to AWR's website to see a picture of the oil pan. It's pretty! As of now we have four people signed up, we need a minimum of one more for this to happen.

Are there any pictures of this installed? I want to make sure it's going to clear my downpipe from my ION exhaust.

chiefmg
11-02-2005, 06:58 PM
The only pictures I have seen are the ones on AWR's site, just the pan. I asked these questions on the other thread since I figured people would want to know. Here are the responses:

1) What is the capacity of the pan?
2) Will it clear headers, suspension pieces, etc?

"I believe it is 6qt, but I'll ask just to verify 100%.

I'm not 100% positive it will clear exhausts and what not but I do know it's used on their proteges using their header. And their header bolts up to the stock exhaust so by association I'd have to say "yes" it'll clear."

You could probably e-mail or call AWR directly to confirm this, if they don't have the info on their site.

Why BUMP..

I guess since someone asked I misunderstand the concept. I thought "bump" was used to keep a thread at the top of any listing. I have seen lots of people asking about this type of oil pan on both forums I go to and since I want to get one (vested interest!), I wanted to make sure everyone had the chance to see it (since there is so much traffic on here and things get moved down the list quickly). Sorry for the screw-up.

Not a screw up. No Worries. Just figured that Tony would probably not build it with any clearance issues. It would make it a dificult part to sell.

I am also wondering about the clearence for the exhaust.

I have the GHL 3" Downpipe, which right now the flex pipe section of the exhaust rests on the oil pan.. I am wondering if it will fit..

I have emailed Tony but no response yet....

From the info posted on the other board, AWR used this pan on their Protege racer with their exhaust. So clearance shouldn't be an issue with their header at least, and given space constraints there aren't many paths other headers can take. I can't say for sure but I would venture that there will be no problems. I just checked the AWR site and the only picture is one shot looking at the top of the pan.

Come on folks, I know it's coming into the holidays and everyone has to budget for presents, but you can always use the argument for buying your own presents. And think of the looks on your friends' faces when you can go hurtling around corner after corner without the worry of your engine dying of oil starvation. I know the interest is out there from what I have seen on this very board. Here's hoping for at least one more person...

chiefmg
11-12-2005, 05:52 PM
My two cents...a lightened flywheel is a mod designed to increase performance. A baffled oil pan is a mod designed to allow your engine to continue to perform by keeping it lubed no matter what type of driving you do. While you are probably more likely to need this type of pan if you are autocrossing, the stock oil pan for our cars is a known Achille's heel. Why take the risk that you will be enjoying bombing around a long curve someday only to have your engine seize from oil starvation? I know it isn't as cool to say you have a baffled oil pan as a lightweight flywheel, but you can always get the gold zinc plating for the bling factor!

I can't answer your question about fitment with an exhaust. No one I know on the boards has any info on this since it is a new product. Your best bet would be to contact AWR. I recall someone said they would be going to SEMA, not sure when that is (I'm in the middle of the Atlantic right now) but it may have something to do with why you haven't gotten a response.
