I have a 2001 Mazda Protege DX, just got done installing the RD series cold air intake from Injen. Now I'm getting a rough idle, (bouncing from 700rpm to 900rpm or so) and extreme hesitation. I cleaned off the MAF sensor using Q-tips and lens cleaner (as per a note on the intake installation instructions).
It's clean as a whistle, still getting the rough idle. Then I took it down to an auto store and one of the guys looked at the sensor (read as: ran tests) on the sensor and said it was fine. Think I need to reflash my ECU?

did you try resetting the ecu?

Sure haven't, wouldn't even know where to start on doing that.

Disconnect the battery terminals for a bit, that will reset it. Your car will run funny after you install an intake too because it has to get used to the added air and compensate.

Sounds about right, I had to disconnect the battery terminals to fit the intake piping on. Any idea how long it "usually" takes for the ECU to reset it's figures?I installed the intake last friday. (three days ago) I've probably driven a total of about two hours since then. Just want to make sure I'm not jumping the gun, if I have to drive more, I have no problem with that. I would've normally driven more, but it started acting funny, so I figured on waiting a bit, at least until I figured out what was going on.

Ok, so I disconnected the battery cables and left them off for almost an hour. Reconnected and I'm still getting a rough idle and hesitation when accelerating. Not sure if I need to just drive it more, or take it to someone who knows what to do. Any suggestions welcome.

did you remember to reconnect the MAF & IAT sensors? I forget that all the time..

Yeah, double checked, triple checked, then checked again.

you may have a vacuum leak from that MAF mount...it is common with Injens...I suggest making a "gasket" out of a bicycle inner tube to seal it up

When I installed my CAI I had the same problem....Finally noticed a hose on the intake pulled off when I was moving some of the sensors....Re-check all the hoses on the intake and make sure they are going where they should. Also, checking for leakage may be another option. Also, clean the damn EGR...I cleaned mine and it idles like new again...well if it's got one....which it should

1.6l's throw cels when equiped with cels. If you happen to get away without a cell you will be heasitating up a storm. Stick with the stock setup. It does it job well.
Supposedly you could run a FPR to set things strait. Would a cheapo ebay one work, I really have no experience with these things.
i have a friend who uses an injen cai and has no problems with his car. when you reset the ecu it relearns so it'll take a bit of driving around before it runs without hesitations. usually the problem is a leak in the maf. my mechanic used some sort of glue to seal the maf in place. i forget what it's called but it looks like something our plumber uses to keep pipes from leaking.

the inner tube patch gasket trick should really do it. it helped me out alot. SOMETIMES i get bad idle but i dont no where it comes from.

sometimes I have that happen when I first start up my car, I think its because the intake system has to charge a little. I have the Injen CAI on my 2.0.
