Hi everybody,
I am looking to buy a 2.5" downpipe with cat and a catback exhaust (probably Greddy SP2) for my MSP, but I can't afford both at the same time. I was wondering if anybody here has run a 2.5" downpipe into the stock catback exhaust. If so, how did it run? How did it sound?
I may have to drive that way for a few months until I purchase the exhaust as well. I'm leaning towards the Apex 2.5" downpipe with cat, but if anybody has other recommendations I'd like to hear them.
Thanks! (thumb)

It sounds basically stock(a little deeper) except when you get on it. The stock does a good job at keeping the sound down. You will notice an increase in performance for sure. I'd go with another exhaust other than the greddy though if you are looking for performance. The stock msp catback flows almost identically to the greddy. Bring on the haters...

I bought a MAM midpipe with high flow cat, sounds great and better top end. If you can only afford 1 of them, maybe gut your cats on the stock exhaust and buy a cat back. Im more than happy with my mid pipe though.

The idea of gutting the cats had occurred to me, but Virginia has strict emissions laws and I don't want to get under the car and switch stuff out everytime the testing dates come up. I'll check out the MAM downpipe, though. Thanks.

Holy canoli! The MAM downpipe is $160 cheaper than the Apex dp. Thanks for the tip!

That is true, but note that the Apex price includes shipping, whereas the MAM price is not explicit about whether it does or not. It might be worthwhile to contact MAM to determine whether shipping is, or is not, included. Furthermore, the Apex piece replaces both the j-pipe and midpipe, while the MAM piece replaces the midpipe only.
I have the 2.5" Apex j-pipe/midpipe but am otherwise stock as far as the exhaust goes. It is a straightforward piece to install and provides a noticable improvement in pull in the middle and upper rpm range. It also adds a slightly deeper tone to the exhaust note, but is fully acceptable to my middle age ears, i.e., it is not at all loud or buzzy. I have nothing but good things to say about it.

Hmmm...didn't realize the J-pipe and mid-pipe were 2 diifferent pieces. Plus, I just read the thread on the MAM production release and people weren't getting stuff for 4 months.
Looks like it's Apex for me. Thanks, Prof! I was looking for advice from someone with the same setup you have. I appreciate it.

Will you create too much backpressure if you do the d/p first?

Did exactly that to my MSP with a custom 2.5 J pipe to the cat. It's the best upgrade I've done yet. Car is much more driveable with less herky jerky.
With JoeP MBC @ 9psi, it was quite a jump in performance I noticed after the exhaust upgrade.
The joint just before the cat is quite restrictive though as it has this weird kink there. I'm considering upgrading the cat-turbo section now to see if it'll gain me a few more HPs. The stock muffer is fine as is.
Sound is a tad louder than stock which is cool to me. Don't want it too loud.

osu1steve, but - yeah, how'd you know? (uhm)
We had a big storm in northern VA last night, so I wasn't able to put it on.
I'll do my best to bolt it up this weekend.

OKAY ALL,
I got my 2.5" Apex downpipe w/cat installed. I haven't driven much with it on yet, but I can give my preliminary review based on a few miles of driving.
Overall, it has really smoothened out the power band. There is no more "herky jerky" surging or bursts of boost. Power delivery is very linear and smooth, almost like a high-revving, small displacement V6. The power curve just keeps climbing as revs rise, instead of falling off early as it did with the stock setup. I think it's a very good modification and I'm glad I did it. I have to point out that shifts are much smoother with this downpipe. The bottom end didn't really see much (if any) improvement, but that's okay because the MSP wasn't weak in that department anyway. I didn't really notice any difference in noise - it sounds just about the same. But I haven't really pushed the car yet, so I haven't truly explored the full powerband. I'm going to reset the PCM during my lunch break and tonight I'll take her out for some hard driving to really get a feel for the difference.

UPDATE:
I have reset my PCM and WOW what a difference. I disconnected my battery for about 15 minutes and then reconnected it. Then I started the car and let it idle for about 5 minutes without touching the gas pedal.
I drove it around town during lunch and noticed a vast improvement over the entire rev range. It's like somebody took the power curve, smoothened it out, and then moved the whole thing up a few notches. Now it really feels like a strong ~2.8L six with serious top end! I am sooooo happy. I recommend this mod to everyone!

Awesome! I'm glad the DP worked out for you. That was my take on it as well - top-end was just so much better. I mostly noticed the improvements on the freeway. Sad for me that I'm starting to run out of performance mods for my car. I'm almost down to the non-bolt-on, car is down for a week type of mods.

how does an MAM midpipe connected up to a ApexR1 3" catback sound? I want a full turbo back exaust, I want 3" with a hi-flow cat all the way back to the turbos for under $500 used, any ideas?
