View Full Version : Black on black MS6.....Rim Suggestions?

So I finally got my MS6 yesterday. Took a look at it yesterday just after it arrived and they were taking it in for PDI. I'll be picking it up at 5:00 today. It is a looker for sure. However, I already have plans for its first year.
It is getting tinted as we speak. Additional plans for this year include a drop, new rims, fatter tires (if possible), exhaust, a FMIC, and possibly an AFC.
Heres where you come in. I have been thinking that black powder-coated rims would like tight, but I don't even know where to begin considering the rims. I'm looking for something hot yet subtle, and something that won't break the bank (my MSP and MS6 payments are enough to do that I assure you). I am a believer of "less is more" so the less spokes the better. If you can spare the time post your suggestions. Pics would be nice too if you can find any.
I'll thank everyone in advance for their contributions. Let the posting begin.

New MS6 uses direct injection, no? Not to burst your bubble, but the AFC idea sounds like it is out the window. GDI systems might prove hard to tune...
As for wheels, you looking for less spokes as in thin, or low spoke count?
Congrats on the purchase though, saw your other thread and she is beautiful. LET US KNOW HOW IT DRIVES!!

Ya I'd hold off on anything involving ecu/pcm tuning. DFI is one hell of a pita to tune, and it doesn't work the same way as standard injection systems in reguards to available aftermarket. Your going to have to wait until someone figures it out.
CP-E has mentioned wanting to make a turbo back system for the car, but there hasn't been donor cars yet.
Some 17x8's in 235/45/17 would work well. (Evo/sti tire/wheel sizing) for that car.

Less as in low spoke count, although I'm not big on really wide spokes either.
As for the AFC, where there is a will there is a way. Among the collective intelligence of the forum we must be able to find someone to tune this bad boy!

if you are serious about doing all that modding... i'm sure since you have one of the first MS6 in your area, you should be the donor car for some companies to make products for. you will probably get them either free of charge or at a super low price.

They fit the 6, I've personally seen a 6S with RX-8 18" wheels. No problem at all.
All current Mazda wheels(note I said current as in 2006 because the 2005 Miata has 4X100 wheels) are interchangeable. All of them...so you can put 18" Mazda 6 wheels on the Miata and put the MPV 17" wheels on a B-series truck. If you really want to ofcourse!

Umm, didn't you lease? You're going to mod the car and then remove them when you return the car or are you planning on buying it out? What's your reasoning?

The MPS 6 has a stock +55 offset...so you'll want to stay as close to that as possible.
Anything x8 width with +45 to +55 offset requires rolling the rear fenders. If your leasing you probably won't be able to do that, which will greatly limit your wheel/tire sizing.
Of course if your leasing, technically you shouldn't be modding the car at all.

These wheels are MazdaSpeed accessory wheels for the Mazda 6 and are 18X7.5.

Furthermore since I've seen a Mazda 6 with RX-8 wheels I know that you won't have to roll the fenders or anything stupid like that. They didn't scrape at all.

The black wheels don't do anything for me, makes the car look cheap IMO. Cosmetics on a vehicle are always personal taste anyway it doesn't matter what we think. I personally like the sleeper look this car has, I would pick a wheel that didn't make the car look modded.

thats why I suggested the wheels above, they are a matte color,5 spoke,to keep the clean look of the car,and not have you eyes focus on the wheels.
go with the FN01-RCs in the new black with polished lip. any black rim needs the lip or they just look like stealies.

Mazkid,
The rx8 rims require rolling the rear fenders on the 6 for fitment. All 8 inch wide wheels require it. The tire impacts the top fender lip otherwise and this type of damage occurs.
The 6club's are full of owners who will loudly proclaim that tires/wheels fit without rubbing, then turn around and rent a fender roller the next week when their tires look like this.
http://www.wam.umd.edu/~greghess/rub2.jpg
The A-spec wheels (mazdaspeed) are 18x7.5 but also extremely heavy and overpriced. They weigh in at a whopping 25 lbs. I won't get into the pricing of the rx8 mazdaspeed rims, the pricing is so rediculous most people shit a brick when they hear it.
Both rims are made by other companies then "labeled" with mazdaspeed...so it is possible to get the designs significantly easier.
If your looking for a similar design to the rx8 speed rim, check out the GT2's by SSR.

Exterior aesthetics are basically just a body kit.

I agree that less spokes might be better. ALthough in person the wheels aren't as bad as in pics.
I guess Mazda wanted to get away from the typical 5 star design of most wheels and every recent mazdaspeed for that matter.

wheels aren't too bad. It's just that it is such un understated car, and the wheels are too busy for it.

all it needs is a subtle change. Perhaps a 2006.5 model will have better wheels.

when I seen the mazdaspeed6 wheels I noticed a resemblence to the original mp3 wheels but with 4 extra spokes between the typical 5 point star setup.
Look hard, you'll see the resemblence.....or maybe I'm nuts
oh well? rolling is not that bad. Got quoted like $60 for it to be done. Whats cheaper, rolling fender or painting and replacing a fender?

Those look niiice. The way they curve out gives them just enough distinction from the somewhat typical 5-star pattern like the ones you added earlier. Where did you get the catalog? No such wheels online, anyway.

Nice find by! Those are slick looking. Not sure what I am going to put on, but I have considered the high gloss black powdercoat finish, for an all-black sinister appearance.
Here is a pic from another forum. This guy just got his MS6 lowered and put powdercoated 19" rims on it. He had to roll his fenders.

shit that is nice. amazing what a little drop will do.
The Catalog I have is a Mazdaspeed performance accessories for 2006. They have everything for all their cars, 6, 3, miata, rx8. Some nice stuff from body kits, wheels, brakes, performance addons etc, cosmetic stuff etc.
for the 3 and 6
Cold air intake, sport shifter, lightweight fly wheel, sport exhaust, Mazdspeed license frame, carbon fiber rear view mirror, addons for ground effects/spoiler and front air dam, sport springs and dampers, coil overs, camber links, sport clutch, stabalizer bars
shit, too much to list. it's pretty much the same deal for all the cars. Looks like different parts have different warranties for them too.
I'd scan it but the pages are bigger then my scanner.

Black would look pretty sinister, especially if lowered like in the pix posted of white MS6, but I like the aluminum, too. But I ain't seeing them online. All they have is a 7-spoke wheel like my '02 Altima had. I guess I'll have to drop by the dealership. Definitely thinking the stock snowflakes have got to go.

Sinister is it brother! With a nice drop and tuck with black rims...whoa Black Betty indeed baby! I just might have to get a vanity plate reading "SINISTER" (or some variation thereof if the full word is taken already in Ontario). The right aluminum rims would look just as sweet though. I think that the key is the RIGHT rims, and the stock ones are definitely NOT right.
Now, is it necessary to stay with 18" rims if you combine 17" rims with a drop, or will they look funny? I have 17" gloss black steelies on right now and they don't look that bad at all. I'm sure 18" rims would look better, but there are two pertinent issues: (i) cost, and (ii) performance.
The other question is whether to go wider rims and tires, wider tires alone, or to stagger them. From earlier discussion I was considering running the same size rims all four corners, but staggering the tire size so that the front were a bit wider than the rear (e.g. 225 front, 215 rear) in order to improve turn in (someone mentions this somewhere during this discussion). The only problem is that with uni-directional tires, you end up with 4 tires that can't be rotated (save for side-to-side if you take them off the rims). Wider tires with a drop would also mandate rolling the fenders, which isn't a big deal, but should be considered.
Too many decisions right now, and not enough money.....arggghhh!
