Alright guys and gals, Im not on here too often as the Protege has been pretty reliable.
However, got a Mother in law who is now the owner of a 1994 Mazda Protege DX.
Here's the low down on things, car was running fine, welll naturally here in Ohio its starting to chage seasons.
She went to start the car the other morning, started up, no problem. Well as it was running it just turned off, she tried to turn it back over and all the car does is crank and crank and crank. So we had to have it towed to my friends shop. He tested a lot of different things. Its gettings power to the coil pack and through the ignition could, but it stops at the Ignition MODULE??? Anyways to make a long story short, we tried to order just this little module, well $110 later, they ordered the wrong part. So before going any further, we are considering on just ordering the entire distributor but we are unsure whether or not it will contain that ignition module or not.
Can you guys please help? This is her only car, and believe me this car gets driven EVERY day so every minute counts on things :(
Please help.

Well, that generation Protege shares many parts with a comperable Ford Escort. Maybe this is an easily obtained junkyard part.
I'll let the experts weigh-in now.

I agree could very well be a junk yard part, problem is i don't think a junkyard is going to part with that small of a part :(.
Plus now we are really in a bind, Mother in law had her Mom pay for the part, which is states away, and she already left. So now we have to exchange the part for in store credit I think. :(

You may also want to go check out http://www.clubprotege.com/, as I think they have more first gen Members. Either that, or re-title the thread so people know what you need.
Maybe people are being scared away by the words "Mother in law" :D

Definately a junkyard part, maybe a pocket item...
Don't know much about the problem, but first gens, especially DXs, are numorous in junkyards. I get most of my parts there, lol.

This expert says that that gen Escort shares Mazda parts. The Protege doesn't have any Ford parts. Furthermore he has a B8 powered Protege, the Escort only got the 1.9L(trash) or the BP 1.8L(found in the Escort GT, Escort LX-E, and Tracer LTS). You can find those BP Escorts at the yards occasionally, but in Son-In-Law's case the part would be different and unusable. He can only use a part off of a Protege DX because that is the only US Mazda with the B8(1.8L SOHC) engine.

No. You have(well, your mom in law has) a B8 powered Protege and no other car sold in the US has that engine, just the Protege DX/SE/4WD. 1.9 Escort parts won't work, and Escort GT/LX-E/Tracer LTS parts won't work either.
It's not hard to find a DX at the junkyard, you shouldn't have any difficulties.

Thought about a Junk Yard problem is most cars are hit in the front and god only knows if those parts will work, Its used so who knows.

Actually most Proteges at the junkyards near me are there for seemingly no reason...usually there's very little damage if any. Many are hit in the front but not terribly.
If you have a Pick N Pull junkyard near you head there first because they have a return/exchange policy most other yards don't have.
