So I just bought my P5 2 weeks ago & think it might have an issue but I dont know if its really something to get concerned over. I was given a 2000 mile warranty so what ever it is the Mazda dealer will be fixing it. Well every once in a while when I arive at my destination & got to put the car into park it will not go past Neutral. I can put it back into drive & try again over and over & yet nothing happens. I usually have to put it into neutral & move the car backwards to finally get it to go into park. Like I said, its not all the time & either way Im calling the dealer. I would just like to know what it might be so when they say "well we couldnt find anything" I have something to come back at them w/.

now that we've gotten that out of the way, can I get a real answer or thought?
somethings not engaging right? in park doesnt the tranny engage something so it kinda locks and stuff.

I think. I dont know why it wont let it go into park though. It only goes from Drive to Neutral & then "locks & wont let me go past Reverse into Park

Maybe a problem with the reverse lockout...if it has one, I know the manual cars won't let u put it in reverse unless ur almost at a standstill...maybe the lockout's not un-locking?

Does it let you into reverse at all?
evilmonkeyMSP

yeah it goes into reverse fine when this doesnt happen. It only does this every once in a while & its ONLY going from drive to park, not park to drive or park to anything else.

No, what I'm asking is WHEN this happens, does it let you into reverse, or does it just not let you into park?

Car is still running right? Me being used to stick, I shut my girlfriends car off and it wouldn't go into park afterwards...took me a second to figure that out!

maybe the park position sensor? I was reading up on the auto tranny for the 2nd gen, and there was a blurb about the PPS needing to be adjusted. but my problem is the reverse of yours. when the car is in park and off, it won't start and won't go into any other gear, so I've been smacking the sh!t out of it till the sensor is in the right place. Good luck (thumb)

hey there, the problem is with a sensor on the trasmission. I have had something similar occur on my protege 5. The mazda dude told me it was not aligning properly and thus it was trigering the transmission to stay in park. Just Curious, also, does you car fire-up after this incident (giving it time to settle down) because mine does not. The car only start in neutral. There was post regarding this before. I don't know if it still exist. Hope this help Good Luck

It did it again tonight. I tried for 30 mins to get it into park & even put it in N & backed it out & drove it around some more to "fix" it but it didnt work. I thought I was going to have to leave the key in it & in N but I finally went back out and ever so gently went from D to N & then it finally let me. My guess is that it is out of "sync" or something. Its staying parked till Sat & the MSP is back on daily duty till I can take it it :D Thanks for all the help guys

It does sound like the lockout, is, well, locking you out. But it should only lock it in nuetral if the key is turned off while in nuetral. But that is my uneducated guess.
