View Full Version : Cold vs. Ram...Last time

Ok, I know I'm beating the horse senseless now, (deadhorse but I'm going to ask anyway. I live in Seattle ie...it rains here....It's never all that hot....and I don't drive really fast, just want more quickness...I can't decide whether to go with the K&N Typhooooon and be able to switch between SRI and CAI or to just go with a Injen SRI....Please throw me a bone....What would you do????? Let's pretend that the cost difference $350 to $175 is not a problem....

i would personally stick with the k&n typhoon. you can easily convert it from short ram to cold air intake rather efficiently as well.

agreeing with captain, if you worry this much, just go for the K&N typhoon for functionability.

I like the K&N better anyway.

Sounds like we have a winner....K&N hands down....Time to drink and stop thinking about it... (cheers)

Typhoon.

ummm get a typhoon. i have one, and i have complaints. also, i've only converted the intake once, and i did that for like 5 or so days. i like the cold air better because it accellerates better on the highway, but the shortram is good for city driving. the shortram is also louder. get it from vividracing.com. it's like $219 there without shipping. everywhere else charges like $250 and up for it.

Just be sure to re-tighten all the connections every month or so...it tends to get loose and can come apart (only if you're using it as an SRI)

I got an ebay SRI with a K&N intake, and love it. If I was gonna spend more $, the Typhoon would be my intake of choice, as K&N has been in every vehicle I have ever owned. Too many years of engineering experience with them. You will be making a good choice. As far as to whether or not to have it as SRI or CAI, there is risks of hydrolocking with the CAI, more than the SRI. I have heard of only a few people doing it. I am in FL, where it rains 4 inches in an hour sometimes, so I got the SRI,a nd have not had a problem, even in door-sill deep water.
I wanna convert my CAI to SRI.... Anyone know where I should put the sensor?

I've had the injen for a couple years now. No problems living in FL...

Injen CAI with AEM bypass valve works well. Some minimal power loss with the valve though.

I got my typhoon on ebay, 230 shipped, get the drycharger, you shouldn't have many problems. Also, it's pretty protected where the filter is, so assuming you don't park it in a puddle, you'll be ok.

Get a DIA (DINAMIC INTAKE AIRSYSTEM) from BMC! Better and cheaper than anything out there! Perfect fit, and great sound on top of that! Tomorrow I'll take a pic of my setup.

I've gone through a foot of water without any issues...on multiple occasions. I have an injen CAI.
And why would the short ram be better for city driving? All it does it suck hot air from the engine compartment. I noticed a huge difference in city driving when I installed the injen. Lost the heat soak. Ran alot better in traffic.

Alright, I just ordered the typhoon and will have it for the weekend....Any other info you want to shoot my way...like please don't do this or you'll f#$% the whole thing up...I know I'll have to move the resevoir, but anything else I need to know would be nice.

Crutchfield....$272 with cleaning/oil kit and 3 day shipping....I'm a little impatient to finally put the thing in...Next weekend will be the only time I've got in the next month...So I probably paid a little more than I should have, but that's what impulsive buying gets you...

It's such an easy install. They baby your ass all the way through. Hell, they made you two new brackets, show you exactly which bolt to take off and what to bolt where, and it all fits like butta. Which color did you go for? I got the red one, it goes great with the strut bar. Anyway, hope you enjoy it, I know I do.

10-17-2005, 12:01 PM
Red, Thought I'd match the bar as well. I'm sure it'll be easy, but thought I'd ask. How does the red match??? Next weekend I'll post some install pics and my thoughts on the gains. I'm not sure yet about exhaust. I've read it doesn't make much difference unless your turbo or take out the cats...When I do the install I'm also going to clean the intake valve and the little recirculating deal underneath. That should make it run like a champ...I'm starting to have some idle issues like dropping off and running high when I start cold. We'll see. Thanks everyone. (thumb)

Just make sure the tube connecting to the throttle body has enough room that it doesn't rub against the master cylinder (at the bend). You'll know what I mean when you begin to adjust everything. Good luck !

Get a DIA (DINAMIC INTAKE AIRSYSTEM) from BMC!
"Also supplied in the universal kit there is a flexible tube to carry cool air to the Airbox inlet"
universal meaning fits nothing properly
flexible meaning to carry turbulent air (rolling over the flex) to the standard airbox/filter though more stock tube to the manifold
i don't see the gains here

It's funny that if a product is not american and overpriced some people become sarcastic. BMC makes filters for Formula 1 (Ferrari, Williams, Sauber and some other), that's good enough for me.

still sucks air in from around the engine compartment, it's not a cai - right? (i don't see anything on the site about it being either or)
personally, i can't understand why anyone would want an sri
all that hot air around the engine can't help as much as stock or cai ( i think)
can't be arsed to find the link, but there's a wrx-style hood that is a ram air intake
that'd be better than sri, stock or cai - except it's like $600+
bit pricey...

The flexible tubing is to route external cold air to the filter. It's a lot like Green's Twister intake. Ideally, the flexible tubing should be placed on a high pressure zone (i.e. the front of the car) so air is rammed though. The filter will never see any water this way and stay cleaner too.
I didn't have room to put the flexible tubing, I'll do it when I get a 45 degrees coupler

There you go! The entrance is just behind the headlamp and far from the path of warm air pushing from the fan. It's ok for now but I will improve it someday... The materials are very good, it's made of very strong plastic (I thought I was gonna break the drilling bit when I fitted the IAT) The filter itself is gorgeous (although smallish). Even if they say the DIA is for engines up to 1600cc the outgoing diameter is excacly the same as 3rd gen proteges MAF (that is 70mm) They also have the CDA which is made of carbon fiber and is still quite affortable. It's the same principle.
PS: if anyone wonders why my overflow bottle is so dirty that's the Red Line water wetter that does this

Protege's are neat, but debating endlessly about a mod that really doesn't do much seems silly. Best way to go for an intake is ebay and spend the rest on suspension. Bang for the buck...a P5 can't be beat when it comes to suspension mods.
