Mazda's top global marketer says 'Zoom-zoom' stays-stays

TOKYO -- Mazda Motor Corp.'s top global marketer has no intention of walking away from the successful "zoom-zoom" advertising tag line.
"Not on my watch," Daniel Morris, Mazda's senior managing executive officer in charge of marketing, sales and customer service, told Automotive News.
Strong sales for Mazda worldwide back up his support. From March through August and into preliminary numbers for September, says Morris, "Every month has been the best in the last 10 years."
In addition, "zoom-zoom" moved up sharply on an Internet survey. The Nikkei group of business publishers ranked Japan-market advertising tag lines on a combination of likability, memorability and other traits.
Mazda jumped from 30th on the list last year to 18th, after the release of a commercial that used Japanese words in place of the English "zoom-zoom."
Among automakers, Mazda ranked second on the list behind Mitsubishi Motors Corp. Mitsubishi was 15th with "Heartbeat Motors," a tag line it dropped on Sept. 28.
Despite their larger advertising budgets, Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. did not make the top 20.
Their respective tag lines in Japan are: Toyota, "Drive your dreams"; Honda, "The power of dreams"; and Nissan, "Shift."

Here's the opinion of someone who loves Mazda and works on the creative side of advertising (OK you don't care but here goes ;) )
a) I like Zoom-Zoom, the words. Something about it is brilliant and captures Mazda
b) the TV spots, however, blow. The scary "I see dead people" kid should suffer the same fate as Elian Gonzalez and the pseudo-reggae band should be sent back to Jamaica. If they come from Jamaica, though I have a strong feeling they're just white guys playing with Pro Tools.
c) the print work (magazine ads) blows. Awful awful missed opportunity. Design-wise it is clean but it says absolutely nothing. Lame all around.
I used to work on the regional SE Toyota account. They didn't have any tight strategies together either (as most regional accounts don't) but briefly some really good Toyota TV coming out of LA. (Too bad the best stuff was "Looks fast" spots :D.) But much of it sucks. Nissan has the only decent advertising across the board now of any Japanese car company. But it doesn't do that much for me. I think they should finally kill _Shift_. Mini stuff was awesome. Just like the VW stuff was by Arnold a few years ago. Actually the VW stuff-- best car ads ever I almost hate to admit. Too bad I don't like VWs. OK, I'll tie Fallon's BMW stuff with it (new agency's work relatively sucks though). And Carmicheal Lynch's Porsche work (which is still good). Ahhh... I love that stuff.

I think Zoom-Zoom is the best slogan yet for any car manufacterer. It's great that it's staying-staying(lol2)
I mean c'mon>
Nissan's SHIFT??= Boring!
Toyota's "Get the feeling"=feeling of what?? How fast OTHER cars are going!
Honda's ...wtf is their slogan again?
Subaru's....
Mitsubishi's "Driven to thrill"=warning:models besides Lancer Evolution need not apply!

i love that mazda6 commercial where the hair on the guy's neck are people in black tights hehe. so cheezy it works!
truth is, mazda needs this type of commercial outreach. they arent honda or toyota, who's name pretty much sells itself. i'm not that big a fan of mazdas, but their brilliant marketing & fresh design ideas has me more interested in their product lineup than that of honda or toyota.

Mazda commercials are cheesy and not really too clever or trying to be serious. It's almost like it's just a bunch of idiots putting in ideas in a box and every week they pick one at random and make a commercial out of it.
But hey, some are good, they are all cheese, and they all stick in people's minds.
So many times when people ask me what I drive and after I tell them they start singing the Zoom Zoom song or say "it's the zoom zoom car"!!
Zoom Zoom!!

Thats the point..make it stick to thei head so they wont forget....If you become serious with commercials people will think differently and there will have no fun in it anymore..I have some ZOOM ZOOM music in my mp3 and its nice listening to it especially when i go to the twisties..hahahaha

Zoom-zoom is perfect for mazda. even though the protege wasn't fast, it's hella more fun to drive than any other car in its class...and that's what mazda is about. that's what the commercials get across, and they do it effectively (although i do hate that kid). the "zoom-zoom" isn't necesssarily all about speed...a miata has it; an STi doesn't.
Subaru's....
"driven by what's inside."
like, um, the engine and stuff. or maybe as in, "hey, we know our cars are damn boring to look at. but inside we have AWD and turbos!"
