Recently spied in small-town England was a prototype version of the 2007 Volvo C30. This three-door hatchback coupe will distinguish itself as the smallest car in Volvo's lineup, measuring 8 inches shorter than the Volvo S40.
Despite the discrepancy in size between the S40 sedan and the C30 hatchback, these two vehicles are both built on parent company Ford's C1 global vehicle platform, which also underpins the European version of the Ford Focus, as well as the Volvo V50 wagon, the company's upcoming C70 convertible, and the Mazda 3.
In terms of its design, the 2007 C30 will draw heavily from two Volvo show cars: the Safety Concept Car (SCC) and the 3-Seat Concept Car (3CC). Comparing these spy shots to photos of either the SCC or 3CC makes the resemblance abundantly clear, even in the presence of identity-concealing materials.
Power will likely come from a small twin-cam four-cylinder, although Volvo could very well employ one of its five-cylinder engines on the C30 as well. It's also been rumored that Volvo is considering a hybrid C30, in accordance with parent company Ford's newly adopted green mentality.
In keeping with Volvo's legendary reputation for safety, the 2007 C30 will likely feature an unprecedented level of occupant protection for a car of its class, which includes other import competition such as the Audi A3, BMW 1 Series and Volkswagen Golf.
Following its debut at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show in January, the 2007 Volvo C30 is scheduled to go into production at Ford's Belgian plant in Ghent. Expect to see the C30 in American showrooms by the fall of 2006.
