Would a shift knob from a Mazda6 or 3 or Miata fit on my Protege?

That would be a big fat NO

uh, yes. miata, protege, rx8 and mazda3 all share the same thread pitch 10x1.25mm
not sure of the 6, but its probably likely.

I have a shift knob from a Mazda 3 in my 99 Protege, and it fits like a glove. Like said above, most Mazda models are interchangeable.

hardly....
but actually I just read the thread title, that was my fault
and if you think they are ALL interchangeable try putting those knobs on my MP3 shifter
or an MSP shifter

So does anything fit the msp shifter?
So does anything fit the msp shifter?
yes, TWM shifters do, only when you order them, you have to mention for what car (make and model) you want the shifter threads to be made for.

the only shift knob that is different is the mp3 ones. all other mazdas are the same as far as i know. i ordered a greddy shift knob for a "mazda" and it fit my mazdaspeed no problem. didn't special order it or anything. i dont know why they made the mp3 different. its annoying.

Maybe I'll just order one to find out for sure. It seems like I'm getting mixed thoughts on this one.
The OEM Protege shifter just screws right off, correct?

The shift KNOB does (thumb)..... counter-clockwise.

Yeah don't worry, I'll hold the shifter tight and unscrew the KNOB only. :)
Thx.

We have shift knobs for the MP3 and the MSP thanks to our new NTIS technology (http://www.twmshiftknobs.com/column/index.html) which gives all of our knobs the ability to fit M8 threads all the way up to M16 threads.
To give you an idea of how height adjustable our knobs are, here's a picture of a gun blue bombshell installed in our WRX, it can be moved up and down by about 1.5 inches. All of our shift knobs allow for approximately the same degree of height adjustment, have a look at our Shift Knobs Website (http://www.twmshiftknobs.com/) for different knob designs.

I bought a Mazda6 knob on Ebay last week. I can confirm now that it does indeed fit perfectly on the Protege shifter. Looks/feels great too! :)
fellas, dont dismiss the fact that the TWM shift knobs are also counter-weight, meaning they were made heavier than most of the shiftknobs out there. This allows for less hand force to be applied to the shifter during switching the gears. I got the original (classic) TWM shift knob and comparing to the stock plastic knob, its much easier to shift with.

pfffttt bahahahahahahahahahahaha I just take that comment as a sarcasm.
But other than that, its a completely different feeling with counterwheight shift knobs from regular ones.
Tampa, dont get on offensive side, please. Im providing info about TWM and you're jumping the gun.

I also have a Mazda3/6 shift knob and it fit fine on both my stock shifter and my Kartboy. I need to polish the gear sequence though, part of my silver paint is worn off and it looks kinda shitty.

yep greddy also makes counterweight shift knobs. Although not as heavy as TWMYeah...No doubt..I have the TWM and its one heavy mother!
It weighs a full pound!
I like it though..But I did have to make a spacer to get the shift boot to meet up with the knob so it looked more factory...I hate a loose shift boot!
But the TWM Rocks....Its just pricy at a large bill for it.

about an hour ago i installed the msp03.5 shiftknob + boot on the b&m short shifter... an interesting installation....
http://mazda.taillandier.de/private/b&m_shortshifter_with_msp_knob_small.jpg
there's a small ring that comes with the b&m shifter which is there to hold the oem boot in place...i had to remove the ring because the msp shiftknob goes down the rod much more than the normal shiftknob...i wrapped the new boot over the rod and pushed it down as far as possible, just enough to make the msp shift knob screw down far enough to get stiff enough...
what actually sucks about the msp shift knob is that the leather ring is becoming lose, i might have to use some glue on it :\

The advantage of a short shifter is a reduction in shifter travel between gears, meaning you waste less time shifting allowing you to shift faster. Here is a link to an interesting article which explains this in more detail: What is a short shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/short-shifter.html).
Our shifter also replaces the stock nylon shifter bushings with industrial grade ball bearings and is guaranteed for life. More stats for the Protege shifter can be found here: Protege Short Shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/mazdashortshifters/mazdaprotegeshortshifters.htm)
I hope this helps,

Our classic weighted shift knobs for the Mazda 3 are $99.95, or $85 if purchased with a short shifter. The shift knobs can be found here: TWM Shift Knobs (http://www.twmshiftknobs.com/shiftknobs/mazdashiftknobs/mazda3shiftknobs.html).
The short shifter and knob combo for the 3 can be found here: Mazda 3 Short Shifter (http://www.twmperformance.com/shortshifters/mazdashortshifters/mazda3shortshifters.htm)

for me it was useful in 2 ways.. i'm a lazy bastard,so a shorter way for every shift is nicy, and i don't touch the shifter/knob anymore with my right knee/thigh in 2nd gear 8)

You guys know the thread pitch on a B&M short shifter? Looking into getting a greddy counterweight. The stock 03.5 Protege5 shift knob fits on it.
is the thread pitch still M10 x P1.25?

If the stock knob fits, then it is M10 x 1.25 for sure. Most Mazdas we've seen are this pitch, except the MP3.
If you're looking for weighted knobs, be sure to check out our 3 new designs which fit all Mazdas:
Weighted Type R Shift Knobs (http://www.twmshiftknobs.com/shiftknobs/type-r-shiftknobs.html)
