today i noticed that my protege lx 2001 has a 4 bolt wheel patern... (never seen that cause i had hubcap)... i always thought that this car was a 5 bolt, the original rims that we see on every protegeare 5 bolt right???
is there a way to convert from 4 to 5
because i have a deal on 17'' mazda 3 rims and these are 5 bolt...i know they fit i have seen it on other protege....
thanks

The deal on the 5 bolt rims will end up costing you more ,you will need the parts from a ES protege or a P% to use the rims ,it would be cheaper to find a set of 4X100 rims with a 45mm offset and run 205/40/17 tires .

The spindles, rotor, calipers, and probubly something Im forgeting from a 5 lug car. Not too bad if you can find a junked es/msp/mp3/pro5 you get a nice brake upgrade out of it too.

is there a 5lug drum brake or is it all 4lug
do i need something else??

why would you want to swap from drum brakes to more drums?
Drum brakes suck really bad, harder to work with, dont hold as good as disk brakes.

you dont have to nessesarily get 45mm offset. I had 17'' wheels with 40 offset. Everything was fine. 40 is the lowest offset that you can go on our cars i think.

dont forget the master cylinder. You have to change the master cylinder also, because the one that is in a protege with drums, puts out MORE presure because of drum brakes, and if it is used for rear disk brakes it will crack the disk rotors because of excess of presure.

drum brakes dont suck. they just dont cool down as fast. if your gonna change to a 5 lug, also going to need a master cylinder. you might as well upgrade to a 929 master cylinder. there's a how to somewhere on this site on the MC upgrade.

lol thats why drum brakes suck. Because they dont cool down as fast as as disk ones and thats why they dont make the stopping better as its on disk brakes proteges. Also, I already mentioned master cylinder, hehe

I'd so do the conversion but then I'd have 2 sets of wheels that are useless and then have to spend at least another $2500 for some OEM 5lug rims and some nice summer rims

so to sum it up....keep the 4 lug and find some rims....and if you want disc do a rear disc swap....its what im looking at, other wise i have 3 sets of rims and tires that are no good

if you want disk, get the 2000 ES rear brakes. they are 4-lug disk. no need for bb kit for the rear really. and for bb kit for the front, corksport has that for the 4-lug. I will never go to 5-lug unless I win the lotto and have money to throw at thr Protege, but I will eventually get bigger brakes for front and get the '00 ES rear disks

ok so at protegefaq, it actually says that drums have better stopping power.....now Im having a dilemma.....to do or not to do this swap. That is the reason why I bought my LX with the 2.0 l and rear drums ,no abs , Mazda rear disc brakes suck , the calipers need constant mantiance . Heres an example , I have 135000 Kms on my car , The rear drums are still good , If I had rear discs I would have had to replace the rear pads at least 3 times ,Maybe a couple of calipers and at least 2 sets of rotors , for what ,looks , sorry but I will stick with the drum brakes that work when you need them most . If this seeems like a rant it is , I cant justify changing a cars brakes for something that isnt as good for looks , If it wont make the car go faster, handle better,or stop better dont do it .

i completely agree with you man. But when doing the swap, you can always get better disks (power-slot for example) and better pads. I was actually thinking of upgrading to Wilwood big brake kit.

The problem with the rear discs on a Mazda isnt the rotors or pads its the calipers , they need major amounts of mantiance to work well

how so? Are you saying that they need more amount of work than front disks?

I'd upgrade to the 929 MC so that should take care of any "ifs" that macklum has

I'd upgrade to the 929 MC so that should take care of any "ifs" that macklum has I am not saying that the rear calipers dont work they do , They just need to be lubed and cleaning on a regular bases to work effectivly all the time . From what I understand the 929 MC is a reat upgrade to the stock brake system . How about posting the year and part# for the 929 MC for all to use .

not sure it matters on year as long as it has ABS. here is a write-up: http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72107&highlight=929+master+cylinder

not true. Why would you clean them on regular basis? You would if there would be something wrong with them. Regular maintnance like 30k, 60k, 100k tune up. I changed my front pads 4 weeks ago.....thats at 48,500 miles Thats a 1st brake pad change on my car. Rear disk brakes wear out slower than front. No need for regular maintenance

I have a 2002 Protege DX, with those retarded rear drums. Is it possible to do a fairly (I use that lightly) painless swap to change them over to rear calipers and rotors? Which cars can I steal the components off of? Or does anyone know of a site where I could get this stuff new at a decent price?
Any help would be appreciated !
Thanks (boom07)

I have front disk/rear drums with almost 60k on them and haven't had any problems. I haven't had to change the front pads since I bought the car new. I may do a 5 lug conversion later on because I want Racing Harts on my car, but I think the disk/drum setup is good at least for N/A cars.

I need to get my rear drums adjusted. the little screw on the e-brake handle is all tight and cant go any further and the rear brakes hardly lock up. plus I have change my front brakes like 3 times already and only have 50k miles on the clock. but I need to take it to the dealer or shop cause I have never worked on drums before and dont wanna fuck anything up without any supervision

you can get them from a 2001+ Protege ES which has 4 wheel disc brakes, but you would have to convert from 4 nuts to 5.

couldn't you just get a pair of the front hubs and disks front dealer and put those on?

but what about the parking brake?
but what about the parking brake?
what about it? It'll still work the same as on drums, only it will ACTUALLY lock up the rear tires unlike with drums.....I pull my hand brake and try to burn out and my car still moves while my drums make incredibly loud squeeEEeEe333Ee3kk noise. Hense, they dont hold good anymore.

The rear discs are heavier. They also have less initial bite. Much better to have the little drums for those of us who autocross.
A proper burn-out requires no e-brake, just more power :)

here is a 5 lug swap on ebay if you're interested. It'll pretty much cover any shortcomings your stock DX has.
