Hey everyone, greetings! I understand that an AWD version of the protege was offered in the early 90s with a naturally aspirated 1.8 in the U.S. and Canada. How similar is this AWD system to the 323's 1.8BPT AWD? Anything on parts interchangability? It seems like this would be an easy way to get a turbo AWD protege by using some 323 parts. Was there ever a JDM 1.8BPT AWD Protege? Thanks.

no, the 88-89 gtx was a b6t. the 90-94 gtx was a bpt. the awd protege shares the same drivetrain as the gtx. the gt-r has a beefier tranny

The AWD pro drivetrain is rumored to be really weak specially the trans. Although I've had no problems with mine.
The GTX got a better trans. With a LSD.The GTX engine/trans are bolt in but the gtx ecu needs to be spliced in I think the JDM GTX/GT-R needs like 2 feet of wire added since it's on the opposite side of the car. The GT-R swap will require some trans mount modification.
The GT-R got an even stronger trans. With a LSD and shot-peened 1st & 2nd gears. It also has a even stronger drivetrain than the GTX including 5 lug hubs and larger brake discs
I believe the Familia GT was the awd 1.8 BPT Pro in japan but not sure.
I've also been told that the miata rear is a direct bolt in for an awd pro.

On my 4WD Pro the GTX trans is an upgrade as it has a bearing area in the case that has been reinforced that mine does not have which is the part that makes it weak. The bearing area is prone to breaking in 4WD pros. The main reason they were only shipped with the (B8)1.8L SOHC and limited to 99HP instead of the (BP)127hp DOHC 1.8L that the FWD pros got. The GTX has a(B6T) 140hp DOHC 1.6L Turbocharged or a (BPT)1.8L DOHC Turbocharged that has around 180HP I beleive. And the GT-R got the BG8Z with 235HP. There was also a very limited run of GTAe's made but I'm not sure what engine they used.

the gt-rs had 210 hp, and the drivetrain on the awd pro and gtx are IDENTICAL. weve had people buy the engines with trannies, and the part #'s are the same.

Thanks for the crossreference info, everyone.! Looks like an awdt Prorege isn't out of the question, with modest power gains. A company called Jazz-proparts, I think sells these BPT engines w/ awd tranny for 1600 Anyone have experience with them?

is the JDM 1.8 L BPT engine at jazz-proparts...the one from the GTR which has 210 hp or is it the one from the GTX which has 180hp?

GTX had 180hp and GT-R had 218HP
The GTX hatch and GTX sedan had the BPT, GT-R and GTAe had the BPD. A GT-R enginer is distigushed only by the letters BPD stamped in the intake mainifold.
The GTX hatch,GT-R, and GTAe were all 4WD not AWD. the GTX sedan used the 4WD tranny with the AWD drivetrain from the protege. In order to use a BPT on an AWD protege you will need the 4wd tranny because the stock B8 tranny will not hold up. The B8 tranny is not the G-type found on the BP.

I actually just saw a 4wd pro yesterday... it didn't say "full time 4wd" back there, it was just where the usual "DX" or "LX" is.
And FYI, here is the jazzproparts link... that's a pretty good deal.

So you are saying there is no differance between AWD and 4WD?
Liquid_Ag

not on the 323's and proteges. there is a transmission difference between the gtx/protege and gt-r, mainly the lsd and various bits are strengthened. the 4wd tranny has been a problem even moreso than our gseries. they explode just as easy as the gseries does

wat do u mean by the gseries exploding?
cause i was thinking of getting a gseries tranny cause someone told me i needed it in order for the gtr engine, in which i'll be getting, in order for the GTR's BPT to read it.

Yeah that's what I was wonderiing. there's a guy ove on the 323 forum running over 400hp on a KIA g-type. granted the kia axles aer a bit beefier but It's the same G-Type . The 4WD trannys are just as strong it's the transfer case that can't handle as much.

im on my 3rd gseries in my 1g. a lot of power and they go poof. the awd tranny - some kiwis have 400awhp drag pros. they did a huge write up on how they needed an option to keep their trannies from exploding. i think they ended up welding the tranny to the frame to keep it from flexing - thats the weakness in the gseries and the awd tranny. the tranny case flexes with the motor, allowing the gears to move freely. none of the pro trannies are that strong. my friend adam who has a gt-r in his pro is on his like 5 or 6th tranny. the gseries is better for the gt-r, but you still can't be a jackass with it

Cause this guy i met on the clubprotege forum told me that I can get a 90-94 Kia sephia transmission...and it will work with the Mazda GTR's engine.
Do u guys know any information about this...if it works or not?
and what kinda transmission does the 90-94 kia sephia use?

The kia is a mazda engine and tranny. Like I posted earlier there is a guy on the 323 forum running over 400hp on one.
and yes it will bolt right up to the BPT.

Only with certain modifications.the stock setup has ver liitle at best. I know people with a T3/T4 on there and they dont have much at all. It can usually be reduced with a good manifold.
